I'm guessing there's a reason they had to avoid doing a Clamshell?
well it's a interesting proof of concept
I think Anbernic is the only company that could match the 3DS aspect ratio since they're willing to use custom screens
In their latest video, the top screen looks like 5:3 aspect ratio...probably a custom panel for their upcoming dual-screen handheld. For the bottom screen, they could just reuse the 4:3 screen from the RG Slide
Idk it looks more like a raspberry pi portable monitor, I've seen some with a 5:3 aspect ratio before
It might be this panel
Yep, the 5:3 screens I can find are all low-res. If Anbernic just wanted to demo dual-screen functionality, they could've used any monitor. The fact they specifically chose a 5:3 screen feels like a hint that they're actually making a custom 5:3 panel.
If they made a 5:3 panel that would be sick
https://www.panelook.com/ if you're that curious to find out whats available
This is where Anbernic has an edge over other retro handheld companies...they can make their own screens instead of just sourcing whatever's already available like everyone else does
Do they actually make their own screens tho? Or just contract through a panel maker? Pretty sure it's the latter, which means anyone could do it. It's just cheaper to go with existing stock or production of an existing design then requesting something new
Obviously they don't manufacture displays themselves, but while anyone could do custom screens, no one else actually does that because it's expensive...Anbernic seems to be the only one willing to spend that extra money to get panel in the exact aspect ratio and specs they want
Anbernic also is able to sell enough in bulk to be able to afford to do so.
They're the Most Commonly sold handhelds, so they move enough numbers to justify the expense considering they can take advantage of Bulk lot deals for Parts.
they also save costs in terms of re-using chipsets and ram amounts across several models to spread cost.
and when they can't they just charge out the rear
Well and charge the extra money. Pretty sure some of that cost was rolled into the slides price. It's not like it's out of the goodness of their hearts
it's more so they're better at reading the Bulk of the market
like say what you want about anbernic but their pricing & Variety is generally what allows them to keep their market dominance despite more Perfomative offerings being available
Like alot of the Sugar's Flaws could be Overlooked if the pricing was there, and from the videos it's clearly a Perfomative device hindered by it's own Cost and Cooling capabilities.
like the more I'm looking at it I'm not sure the G3G3 is benefit to the sugar if it can't fully make use of it's capabilities just seems like an additional cost.
and what initial offerings were 80 black units and 80 white?
plus they did two commercials which I question the need for even one.
Nothing wrong with advertising
They've also had video reviews from content creators overseas and large showcases for industry
Clearly this is just something they were excited to bring to market
It does suck that the cooling system was inadequate. But it was a proto. Final design could fix that or its possibly solvable through software
Ayaneo fan curves were crap for a while til they pushed an update
Once thermals are fixed you can def take full advantage of the G3G3 in this package
I don't know why, but the OXS reminds me of that old Power Rangers Transforming gun/computer toy from the 90s.
Maybe it's the transforming and the chunky white plastic
And all the weird fake embellishments that don't really do anything
the greeble device
Anbernic have recognised more clearly than most that one size doesn't fit all with the retro handheld market, so they generate their sales volumes from releasing multiple form factors based around a platform of processor and display, by this point they have probably streamlined the design process other than when they do something a bit different like the slide or the sp
super sp
anbernic has recognized that you can make a ton of money out of selling people variants of the same slop then upgrading that slop into a mildly better slop that still isnt perfect

it's like if "agile" development was hardware
IGG deadline extended yet again. Not looking good.
this thing should've stayed in the CAD program
With Ayaneo and now AYN coming out with more traditional entries in the dual screen race... I think it's very possible this just gets canceled
Very nice but the Ayn Thor killed almost all my hype for this , hope it’s amazingly great though
This is perfectly fair, I still want the Transforming Handheld. Honestly I might buy both if we get Rocknix on the Ayn Thor.
The stupid dpad killed it for me long before the thor was announced. Can't wait to hear people complaining about losing their dpad. Or selling it on marketplace without the dpad 🤣
Price isn't great either
What will be?
Based on the thor would need to be lower than that to counter balance the quirkiness of it and we need to see it working properly anyway. Personally I have ordered a thor anyway.
