Done!
Congrats c:
I'm curious. What's the difference between runahead and pre-emptive frames?
Run ahead shows you the game 2 frames in the future always. I think PF is triggered only on input and then would rewind the game 2 frames pretending the input happened then and replays the game up to the present.
PF is more efficient than runahead supposedly. There’s a lot of “it depends” when you ask people though.
And done. Great game glad to have finally finished it after all these years
7.20 finish time 69% completion. Don't think I'll be going for any speed run records there! Though I did have a habit of leaving it idle... Honest!
Congrats! 🎉🥳
yay! I am glad of so many people re-discovering Super Metroid
It never ceases to amaze me how well crafted Nintendo games from the 8 and 16 but ages were, and how well they consistently hold up 30 years later
I started playing last night and have really enjoyed it so far. I think the hype feels appropriate!
After not playing the weekend any games - I picked it up again and was worried that I wouldn’t know where to go. I had just beaten crocomire on thurs evening. I consulted a guide as to what is the next upgrade to get and have picked up from there and made some really good progress tonite with the last upgrade I got (gravity suit) before calling it a night.
I'm in Miridia. This has been an incredible experience so far. Great pick!
Yeah, this one's a lot of fun. Glad I'm finally playing it all the way through
It's so funny thinking back to how lost I'd get as a kid
Felt like it took months to even get to Kraid
just finished ridley but I need to study tonight. tourian is next and I'll wrap this one up (again)
because its so damn good
Welp, I think it's time to get started. c:
This game looks great on a CRT TV. ^_^
Going to try to beat this game in under 3 hours. Who's with me?! 😄
I belieeeeeve
Woah, apparently once you get the Charge Beam you can charge a shot and then press the item select button to do a special attack. c:
I guess it's not super useful, but it's still cool. 🙂
I lied to myself and beat it anyway xD
Congrats!! 🎉🥳
I never get the best endings, I want to fart around too much looking for goodies and then run in circles until the brain remembers or notices something on the map I overlooked that is the next step on the golden path
Understandable, especially with a great game like this. 🙂
This is actually a pretty useful attack against certain enemies. c:
Especially against groups of enemies.
With Redux, I can simply swap the Walk/Run button with the item select button, thanks to auto-run.
man, I should’ve thought of that
There are things I really like about Redux, but I really struggle to adapt to the difference in its aim mode
I started playing the OG version again and it still holds up
true, the diagonal aiming was different, had to get used to that
Well it never bothered me. c:
I love the changes that Redux makes to the controls. 🙂
I mean it didn’t bother me, it just took getting used to
I played both GBA Metroids multiple times before I ever looped back to Super, so the Redux shoulder buttons feel a lot more natural to me than trying to mash item select to get back to the beam etc
It’d be real nice if there was a way to bring L2/R2 support into a SNES game to keep all those functions available at the same time, but since we have to pick… I do prefer Redux’s choices.
Tbf I only thought of that with this playthrough. 🙂
I was in the controller settings and I was like "wait a minute, I don't need the walk/run button when I have auto-run... 🤔". :3
for sure haha
I’m playing on an RG ARC. Don’t necessarily recommend it, accidental diagonals and wall jumps really don’t mix well, but it does mean I have enough face buttons for all the things.
Yeah, I've had problems with wall jumps when playing through emulation before, depending on the controller's d-pad that I used. With some d-pads it feels too easy to accidentally press up or down when moving between left and right.
This missile upgrade takes skill to get. It always feels good to obtain it. ^-^
I'm not sure about spoilers with this game because of how insanely popular it is. 😛
Anyway, I just got the Grappling Beam. c:
X-ray visor. c:
Got the Gravity Suit. 🙂
lol yeah it's annoying to get that one
I got it on my 5th try. You gotta be standing in one very specific spot. It feels like if you're off by a single pixel, then you won't get it.
I tried many times 😄
if you run too much, you lose the dash
once I almost made it and then got hit by a stupid crab
X)
Performing some tricks with the switch pro controlled d-pad is a pain.
Prolly going to give the joy cons a try today.
Yeah, I don't understand why Nintendo of all companies can't consistently make good d-pads by now. They should always be above average at least.
Guess the cobbler's son doesn't have a proper shoes after all X)
Also I've really grown to loathe where they put the screenshot button on the pro controller.
I have multiple screenshot of me standing on front of doors that require missiles or bombs because I don't properly look down at my controller when wanting to press select.
XD
Yeah, playing this game with a first party SNES controller in great condition is a real treat. c:
Absolutely perfect d-pad on the SNES controller. ♥️
No doubt. I used to own 8bitdo Pro 2 I used for retro games, but I gave it away to my younger siblings when I got the Xbox version from a giveaway since I figured I haven't really played retro games on my Switch.
Then like couple days after I gave it away I decide to play this on Switch.
Yes, I do suffer what is commonly known as "smooth brain".
lol
Yeah 8BitDo has designed some great d-pads, especially with their M30 controller.
I love using that thing with my Mega Sg. c:
My current status screen. It looks like I won't be beating it in under 3 hours after all.
It's really tough collecting everything and getting the special ending. My left thumb is sore.
I missed the spring ball in this last run lol
Only if you have exactly two beams equipped. Doesn't work with just charge or with 3-beam combos
I forgot spring ball is even in this game lol
you probably already said it, but that's a mod, right? nice count of the time and item collection!
Yeah this is the screen that comes with Redux
I think I actually had a pretty good luck with Phantoon. ||He seemd to loathe the idea of staying immaterial and almost immediately turned solid most of the cycles.||
Phantoon got me real low but I did still get him on the first try.
I'm always impressed how people can know this game so well. I get lost so easily. I just went from the wrecked ship to Maridia only to find not one, but 2 dead ends and now I have to go all the way back and find some other way to progress
Yeah, I'm just using a map and a guide whenever I get stuck.
I liked Metroid Dread so much more. The level design always guides you in the right direction there
Oh god, the place that I thought was a dead end, wasn't a dead end. I just had to let an enemy dig through the wall of sand. So glad I decided to look it up.
Oh yeah, that was a confusing room
I love the dualsense for retro games. So comfy.
Aye, it really is.
Thanks c:
And yeah, I'm using the Redux hack.
Wrecked ship down
Doing good with upgrades so far
Don’t really understand the reserve tank ha
I think it refills your health if you run out? Kind of like the sub tanks (or whatever) in Mega Man games?
Except that it's an automatic thing in Super Metroid, I think.
Ah that makes sense then
does it refill to full health? it’s been a while since i’ve triggered a reserve tank in super
Idk, but I'm assuming that one reserve tank refills one health bar.
Each reserve rank refills a normal energy tank the an equal amount of energy. In the picture above you can see the reserve tank only has 18 energy in it. So if samaus dies she gets 18 refilled in first tank but no more.
If you have a full reserve tank it will fill the first energy tank full (99)
I think k you can get 4 reserve tanks which means you can refill 4 normal energy tanks to full after samaus dies.
You fill reserve tanks by “overfilling” your regular tanks. So get to full energy on all tanks in the top left and then any more health you get goes into reserve tanks. Or find an energy refill station
Damn that ||Ridley|| fight was tough.
Just tried it today, several attempts but no luck yet. Bat went flat so will try again latter.
Struggling to get the screw attack to be consistent on the RGB30. Seems to cancel out too often.
Yeah, it's crazy how Ridley just wiped out my health. He flies around the room so fast, it's tough to keep track of him and dodge his attacks in that small room with a single platform.
yeah, very hard to see where he is coming from. Just noticed you have heaps more health than I do, I need to go farming for more. Might stand a chance that way.
I think I'm only missing one missile upgrade. It might be in one of the areas that you access early on in the game somewhere. 🤔
How do I get this door to open? 🤔
Got it! 100% of items and upgrades collected! ^_^
well done!
Thanks! ^-^
wow! Amazing!
that is for "later" 😉
What version are you playing? I don't have the items % showing
I'm using the Redux hack. c:
Thanks 🙂
did you follow a guide? is there an efficient way to keep order? 😆
I've played Super Metroid multiple times before. c:
First time getting 100% though.
And it's my first time playing through the entire game on a CRT TV. ^.^
Maybe use a map? I'm sure there are plenty of them online, considering how popular this game is.
super impressive! loved your play by play
Heheh, thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it. 😄
nice! The way it was meant to be played
Indeed 🙂
don't leave the animals behind!
Just finished it, took me 9 hours and 78% completion. Tried to do it completely blind but gave in and looked at a map towards the end as I was a bit lost and wanted to move on to other games. Had a blast!
This is my second Metroid, last one was GOTM 2 months ago. Love the connection between the two games.
Congratulations!! 🎉🥳
I'm about to fight the final boss, I just needed to grab a bite to eat first. c:
I saved the animals too. :3
now, really, how do they escape?
On a ship. In the cutscene of the ||planet exploding|| you see a tiny purple dot flying towards the right side of the screen, which is only there if you save the animals, iirc.
yes! but I wonder they must be much smarter then to be able to pilot a ship
Greetings from Maridia! Wish you were here! Anakin Skywalker was right!
God damn it. I always fall as far as I can when I fall in Metroid games. Makes those vertical rooms a bit of a pain.
Lol, happens to me all the time.
Got to Ridley's, hopefully going to knock this tomorrow.
The panic wiggle

Happens to me in every platformer
We have Calvin and Hobbes emojis, we have blue emojis, but we don’t have a single Metroid emoji on this server

That's a good skill to have when you actually have to drop down tho speedrunners would be jealous
You fail to understand. If we tried to do that intentionally, we'd hit EVERY PLATFORM on the way down
canonically, Samus saves the animals. just in case any one wanted to know some extra nerdy lore
also, in case folks playing redux are dumb like me and can’t figure out how to use the xray visor, it’s the X button. not select on the items bar or whatever. took me forever to realize that, I thought it was busted in redux lol
holy crap, i just DEMOLISHED Phantoon. I thought that was such a difficult fight the first few times I’ve played Super. Not this time 😳 I absolutely torched him
fake screw attack is the pro gamer strat for sure
I’m not liking this area after the wrecked ship. Just beat some dragon thing that was poking out of holes so hopefully I’m close to be done here
Get bent, Ridley.
Yeah, not a fun boss fight imo.
I need to get my office one of these doors that only opens ||when my subordinates are killed.||
Did the whole return-to-upper-Brinstar run
goddamn you net a lot of good shit doing that, but it's a big detour timewise even if you're coming back with the gravity suit and getting everything in one go
Like you just don't organically pass that way unless... oh right, you do it on your way to the end
though that's a long delay for like ||three or four bloody energy tanks, a reserve tank, and a bunch of super missiles||
||when you probably want those for like, Draygon and Ridley||
ehh, ||Draygon doesn’t need super missiles, she goes down to the grapple beam zappy-zappy real quick.||
Finished! Took me 12 hours (in-game timer showed around 8hours 20 minutes)
on to lower Norfair. Maridia wasn’t quite so bad this time. It would almost be fun, if it weren’t effectively two completely separate areas, and god help you if you fall through the sand in the wrong spot and need to get back around
I just finished Maridia and it sucked ass
Still better than Strife though
HyperSuper ||I swear I'm playing the right game done sue me|| Metroid is fun. My Samus is blue for some reason. Got a lot of powerups but not sure where to go next. This hackTHE ORIGINAL GAME has so many sequence breaks that I don't know what the proper order is supposed to be
Done. That’s my third time playing this, and this was by far the quickest. Sub five hours isn’t fast by any means, but I had 80% of the items which made Ridley and Mother Brain easy-peasy. Ridley was actually a first try victory, which is nuts to me. Mother Brain went down quick too, not even she can take 40 super missiles to the face and live.
Super still isn’t my favorite Metroid game (❤️ you, Fusion and Dread) but it’s really really good
Congratulations! 🎉 🥳
Playing this got me started on watching map randomizer races. Crazy how these randomizers tend to work for shuffling items without making the game unbeatable, and then on top of that map randomizer shuffling all the rooms while still having a usable map
Indeed c:
Wait til you see the randomizer that combines link to the past and super Metroid.
Just finished
I feel like it was enjoyable at first, but I didn’t like anything post wrecked ship. I was spoiled by playing Zero Mission, Samus Returns, and Fusion before this. I could see it being insane when it came out though
meanwhile I like Maridia because I like the music and I like water levels
I was on mute the whole time ha
Congratulations! 🎉 🥳
I’m not a big fan of video game music and like playing while watching tv
I do too, but I still like to keep the volume just loud enough so that I can hear the music. c:
I'm not the type to listen to video game music on its own though, outside of playing video games.
I don’t mind it at first, but when it gets repetitive I’m out. I like jrpgs and it’s the worst offender ha. Oh great, the same 35 seconds of battle music again
One of the best things about Earthbound was its wide variety of battle themes tbh
Oh yeah, I've watched those. Then there's a co-op mod too. can't remember if co-op play was adapted to the link to the past mashup or if teams just scouted and shared info
Oh yep, supports multi-world
The latter part of Hyper Metroid kind of falls off. Go to one area, fumble around for a single powerup that doesn't seem very helpful, then go to the entire other side of the map for the good powerup. Then fumble around finding power bomb locks everywhere until deciding to go back to the other side of the map again and make another slow progress. Lots of back and forth
Ok, I'm giving up on Hyper Metroid. Explored every single zone but can't figure out where the power bombs are. Every single place I turn needs power bombs. Have give through blue doors and to go back needs power bombs that I don't have and have to backtrack all the way around to go another way just to find out if needs a power bomb too. Not intuitive at all
Just beat Ridley. Sitting at 6 hrs in game time and 75% completion. Hopefully the end is near in sight but it has been so good
you’re very close to the end, yeah. Nice job beating Ridley! He’s a tough fight.
Yes but just over 4 hours isn't like "man if I I'd taken one less stupid detour"
or like, not dicked around getting that one single missile canister in western Norfair
the one you get with the grappling beam
there are some really bad time/effort-to-return missile canisters in this game that I really should have just ignored
I suppose. 😛
My time was about identical 💔
Clearly sub 3 is in reach for both of you!
The only Metroid I’ve felt compelled to “speedrun” like that is Dread. I think my best time was like, 3:03 or something. That hurt. So I can sympathize.
About to fight mother brain with 35 super missles and 165 normal missles. Hope that is enough
Sounds like plenty, but your charge beam should work as a backup
that’s more than enough ammo. the real trick is etanks.
that proved to be my undoing before i called it a night. I lost alot of health and missles dealing with the barrier/etanks the room before. Need to go slower me thinks
hoping to finish it tonite
Should be able to finish today too. Then all in on Strife but I might go over the month
the red barriers don’t respawn, so you can leave that room and go back to the recharge room as needed
oh man that is useful advice thanks
didn't know this either! always got to last boss very tight on ammo an ended up using charge beam
I have found this really tiring to play on the 405v lol
Man this tip came in so clutch! Thank you for the advice
Game finally done!!!
6h27mins game time and 80% collectibles
But it was more like 9hrs according to retroarch
Heck yeah, great job
I am super intrigued at how the speed runners finish this game in less than 2 hrs. Have added a few speed runs to a YouTube playlist. I struggled and needed to use a guide a few times
There's a lot of hallways that only lead to extra optional stuff, you can cut out a lot of the map even before you get into tricky sequence breaks if you know where you actually need to go
The current any% speedruns are insane tho, look for older ones or specifically KPDR (regular boss order) ones cuz they are closer to if you just did a regular playthrough quickly
And done! Wow, what a ride. This was the first time I thoroughly enjoyed a Metroid game. Always been more of a Castlevania fan. I've only played Prime and Zero Mission before, but this was by far my favorite.
For a game that came out in 94 it holds up incredibly well, can see why it is so loved by fans.
Congratulations! 🎉🥳
Yeah. While it does have some elements that have dragged with time, it doesn't really feel like an "old" game, somehow.
Personally I love the gameplay, it feels really good. 🙂
I'm the closest I've ever come to beating this game, it's been almost 30 years since I first attempted it, and now I can taste it
that's why all 2D metroids are similar with some QoL but that's all, super solid game, gameplay and system
the source of a genre after all!
Finished the game, had a great time as expected, though I don't see why this one is supposed to be the best 2D Metroid. Perhaps because it was the first entry that was super good? Anyways, now having finished 3 2D metroid games and Prime, I think I'm liking 3D ones a bit more.
Yeah, I think it's just because it was first (the first good one I mean). I think Zero Mission is all around a better game. AM2R is also a strong contender for best 2D Metroid. Unfortunately, 3D Metroid peak with Prime. Prime 2 is also fine, but it's divisive. Prime 3 adds a lot of elements that don't fit Metroid very well. None of the other 3D ones are even worth mentioning
Congratulations! 🎉 🥳
What am I supposed to do here exactly
Hold down the sprint/dash button, iirc.
Unless you need the Shinespark for that room? 🤔
I'd map it to one of the secondary shoulder buttons so that it's easier to hold while running around and shooting, too
That's a good idea. I hate this game's button layout generally anyway
the cry of Super Metroid newbies all over the world
Yeah. It lets you remap to your heart's content but it's just kind of trying to do a lot for a game on the SNES controller
That's why I kept recommending using the Redux ROM hack for this game. It has an auto-run feature, so I put what became the walk button on Select, and Item Select on X.
It would have massively benefited from an extra pair of shoulder buttons for dashing and using secondary weapons
...Also I too put weapon select on X
Seriously though. I couldn't get used to certain aspects of Redux, but it one thing it does very well is letting you switch between your beam and missiles/super missiles/etc. real quick. This is super good for bosses that throw trash mobs at you that you don't want to waste your real ammo on
When I was younger I remember using the Charge Beam against some bosses a lot just because it was either that or keep firing missiles into their distractions
I love everything about Redux. ^_^
There's a reason the community calls that room noob bridge https://metroid.fandom.com/wiki/N00b_bridge?so=search
We all have gone through that moment

Wow these guys are throwing shade
I actually find myself butting heads with the auto-run at times, and I just didn't get along with how the aim button worked
I see. 🙂
i actually can’t think of a single situation where you need to run and shoot at the same time
since the speed booster activates so quickly, and that kills pretty much everything it comes into contact with
Best reason I can think of is to shoot doors while boosting
slaps forehead
yeah that’s a good reason
yeah, not sure if you need to do that in a normal playthrough but you definitely do for some sequence breaks. might be necessary for 100% too
Holy MARY MOTHER OF GOD(?!?!) this quicksand/waterfall nonsense in Maridia is absolutely RUINING this game for me
Maridia claims another victim
The quicksand wasn’t an issue for me this time. I wonder if that had something to do with Redux’s auto-run..? I donno.
I've never had that much difficulty with Maridia. It's annoying if you screw it up and have to go all the way back up, but it's only a few spots. It's not too difficult to figure out imo.
Yea I've got it figured out but wow, what a buzz kill to an otherwise solid game
Also didn't realize that balloon dude could be grappled to not have to redo a section everytime I fall
Nearly home stretch
Maridia is where I slowed down. Going to be a struggle to finish at the rate I'm going
You got this!
Once maridia is done it's all smooth sailing again!
whoops i need to finish this lmao
XD
Oof just messed up my auto save. That's an hour rollback...
I thought RA had an undo autosave feature?
😱
Looks like I gotta figure out how to cycle the save slots like I used to
I played it on my Super Nt and I was able to use the save stations frequently enough that I didn't miss save states.
I got pretty darn good at wall jumping but wow the space boots are pretty damn gamechanging
Tourian time, LFG!!!
63% item completion, not bad for ALMOST entirely blind playthrough
Congrats! c:
i have been off of this but i am struggling so hard i might just start over and do the normal route LMAO. im pretty sure i can comfortably be sub 2 hours on that
i should have taken some extra safeties on the route i was doing but im not even sure which ones make sense
trying to do the modern wr any% route when i havent played the game in like 5 years was over ambitious lmaooo tho it was fun. but ill have more fun just doing regular boss order with a few speed tricks
Guys I decided to tackle Metroid fusion, since is already had been gotm. And had never played before
Had to admin it has become my favorite Metroid. It’s awesome
Fusion is awesome. How far in are you?
Just finished right now …. My jaw dropped
I’m thinking of starting AM2R hahahah but maybe I’ll wait until it wins gotm
have you played Samus Returns or Dread?
Samus return yeah. I liked it but I do prefer the older pixelated graphic style hehe
Dread haven’t played yet
omg play Dread immediately
yesssssss
Dread is my personal favorite Metroid game. I’ve beat it seven times 😵💫 it’s got the best boss fights in the series by far. It’s got the best movement in the series, and it’s not even close. It’s spectacular.
I really disliked the bosses. They were too pattern focused. Getting hit once did way too much damage and made it feel like you were never actually getting stronger even with finding E-tanks. Older Metroids are more frantic and feel like a battle of attrition hoping that you have enough resources to survive. It evokes a more "dread" feeling than the actual Dread game
Yep, first thing I did after finally beating SM was went back to GOTM Prime and am committed to finishing it this time
Still kicking myself I lost focus that month and didn't finish it
I hope they remaster Prime 2 and 3 after 4 comes out
I'm to understand that 2 and 3 aren't really playable without native hardware
There’s always primehack
Why do you think that? 2 is easy enough to emulate on GC for anything strong enough for GC. The Wii version of both would probably be a bit fiddly with motion controls unless you've set up Wiimotes or using Primehack
Me too… I’m actually playing the prime remaster too.
Yea looks like I was mistaken, Prime 2 seems easy enough as a GC title, it was 3 that looks tricky to bind motion controls but I've found a few controller binding suggestions I'll try after 2 🙂
Just want to be ready for 4 when it comes out
primehack is great tbh i would recommend that for prime 2 and 3. its only on pc tho, no android. but probably steam deck friendly
Yea I'm on my Odin 2 so just running latest Dolphin
I've tried several times to do emulation on my Deck and it just never clicked for me
So I stick to PC on it and emulation on O2
yeah i mean that works... but then you have to use the original control scheme lol. not really sure if you can even bind strafe cuz i dont think there was any way to do it at all in the original if u arent locked on
i just found out about Primehack and it’s gonna make me set up emulation on my deck. See what you’re making me do, Nintendo?!
Should be half-press L and move. Half-press shouldn't lock on
69 completions. NICE
dumb question, how do people check completions?
starting over and just doing the normal route for a last minute completion lol, kraid down
well "normal" as in regular boss order, i still skipped spore spawn and did kraid before getting high jump
phantoon down
draygon down
congrats on getting the mockball down, I cannae fuckin' do it
it takes me a few tries tbh but yeah i can get it. not bothering with any of the other fancy shit i was doing in the run i tried before tho lmao i shinesparked across the moat instead of that nasty bomb jump
got ice beam before wrecked ship too so i didnt even have to do the red tower walljump (tho im actually pretty good at that tbh)
skipped spore spawn and crocomire. beat draygon and im just under an hour igt, should finish sub 2 hours in game clock i think?
Honestly if I have an issue with the red tower walljump it's getting in the hole at the top
I can walljump fine, but walljumping out from under an overhang is something else
ridley down
Damn I was like "I need more energy tanks" after getting a BUNCH of missiles (unintentionally) so I walking towards this energy that I used a guide for and the I fell through the floor
What does reserve tank do
I really wanted that energy what the hell
there are a bunch of trolls like that in the game
These guys are flexing on me with their wall jumping skills
I actually don't know how to get out from here but there's no way it's impossible
1:41 and I saved the animals
It fills up when you collect health when all your e tanks are full and then heals you when your health hits zero for the amount filled
wait that's kinda insane
I ended up taking a lot of safeties to just have some easier fights lol I was overstocked for mother brain. Wasn't doing a real speedrun anyway
Each reserve tank only holds 99 tho so they're like shittier etanks
fine by me
I just need more energy
My two + one tanks
Walljumping seems unnecessarily difficult from the way the game presents "teaches" it
44% completion lol thats a lot
it takes a little time to get the hang of but its not that hard. might help to use a little runahead to cut down on input lag tho. you press jump when samus enters a pose where she's like leaned against the wall
I managed it twice before but I'm trying to trigger that "leaning on wall" animation
err its more leaning away i guess. when you press away from the wall on the d-pad she should go into that
she'll leave somersault for a few frames when you tap away from the wall, that's when you jump
I see
I just can't believe I had the ability to wall jump all this time
its very useful lol. makes some of the vertical shaft type rooms a lot easier
and lets you do some fun sequence breaks if you're into that lol
how far are you lol? might be tight to finish before the deadline in just over 2 hours
I definitely not gonna finish in time
I only have half the equipment
Gonna take a nap and finish it this weekend anyways
if you followed a walkthrough you could probably rush it lol but yeah might as well enjoy it
yeah lol the game doesnt teach you that. or charge beam combos. or crystal flash. but shinespark is more useful than those other two lol
This is why we save the tutorial animals
i did save them lmao
So I did end up finishing this game yesterday. After the deadline, but went for it anyway.
Good god, it can't be overstated how important it was to the style and design of what we know now as "Metroidvanias." Think about it. Before Super, Metroid 1 & 2 were the gold standard. This one is miles beyond those. Nothing in the genre played like Super Metroid when it came out in 1994. I'd argue very little played like it at all, inside or outside of the genre. It's insane they jammed this into a cartridge in '94, and even more insane how ahead of its time it was. Stellar game. I hope even those who it didn't click with can pick up on its importance.
I would unironically place Super Metroid somewhere close to Doom on a list of historically important video games... both in terms of technical achievement and design impact.
There's one whole place I haven't even explored yet (besides the very last section) but the design and graphics are so impressive
Truly shows me what the SNES is capable of
Sorry this comparison of Doom and Super Metroid reminded me of that one section on the Wikipedia page for Metroidvania where it cited someone's perspective on the term saying that just like how "Doom clone" turned into "FPS", Metroidvania would eventually evolve into another term as the genre continued on... and this article is from 2019... what a bizarre take
it kinda has, although it’s not mainstream. “search action” is another name for the metroidvania genre
metroidvania is kind of a reductive term tbh. there are "metroidvanias" that draw influence more from other things than metroid or castlevania, and there were other metroidvanias in the 80s and 90s.
and as konami keeps making pachinko machines the castlevania part is gonna be less and less relevant tbh. its already been 10+ years since the last castlevania game in that style
That's the only way I can see it going
didn't the castlevania guy move onto the bloodstained series? "metroidstained" doesn't sound quite as catchy though
Hm I just realized the first result for Castlevania is the Netflix show
the guy who directed most of the metroidvania style ones did bloodstained yeah
Bloodtroid though
"Let's put quicksand in our game" One of the many phrases spoke by the utterly deranged
