#Anbernic RG28XX

huh, really? i gotta test that, are you on theRA?
No, Gamma
Anbernic gonna pump and dump the H700 onto every size and shape handheld.
I think the dev is experimenting with an Android TV-based build for cutdown RK3566 devices
But yeah, reliable sleep mode (and also Wi-Fi not dying ever) is a brilliant thing to have
I wonder if they have a long term plan for an eventual xy upgrade from h700 in a year or so
I mean, there will be an upgrade, sure. But I suppose they won't know a specific chip until they find a good deal
i think the next standard should be wifi and bt on everything, maybe even bluetooth audio
power and efficiency wise, the h700 is really good
Oh yeah, BT audio is really underrated
Sure, the lag will always be noticeable, but I just can't bother to carry separate earbuds just for my handheld
that's the part i really love with android handhelds
with the redmi buds 4 active in low latency mode i have no noticeable latency at all, at least with my odin 2, 405v and deck oled
I'm always listening to audiobooks so game audio is less of a selling point for me tbh
Usually I only have one ear listening to something and then the game playing on speaker. Then swap ears every once in a whie.
lol, that's me all the time
On the Arc the delay is a couple of seconds with the "gaming" mode on, using Sound core Liberty 4 NC
Yeah, I really feel a lot of wireless issues are Rockchip's fault more than anything
100% this. Without minUI, I dunno how usable it would be
And there’s still problems, like you said
Yah, it's such a shame
Hopefully we get a community fix/proper cfw at some point but I'm not holding my breath
Wow I'm so sold if the a30 has usb c headphone support. I love my pixel c headphones
sony a105 here
practically a slimmer MM
Looks great! I needed something with a 4.4mm jack & I'm a sucker for volume knobs lol
this is actually cool cuz it makes this one of the only devices that rotates into tate the correct direction for wonderswan lol. so wonderswan games that make u rotate mid-game like klonoa will work well without u having to flip the screen every time it goes tate
i realise that is incredibly niche lmao but still
but yeah i think i might buy this. i dont really need it but I want it lol. and i like the orange
alright. I think it's the right micro device for me. Compared to the Trimui smart, bigger screen, much better perfomance and battery and only 5mm longer
Russ has a unit and dropped some early impressions on his channel earlier today, in case you missed it
I was there 😉
What were the impressions? Can’t seem to find that
Ty
Button size is a bit of a bummer but I can adjust to that
Middle on next week this will be on sale
And here I thought you meant his youtube channel lol.
As did I
Doesn't help that he calls a lot of his first videos about a handheld "first impressions" lol
consider them as initial first impressions then 😄
RG28XX has a pocket size that is truly "under control", and its compact body is full of childhood fun. Available in elegant retro gray and black transparent, it helps you reminisce about your childhood. The trendy lava orange and beige white colors satisfy the pursuit of fashion trends. Exquisite and compact, with rich functions and diverse ways...
I guess if I wanted to test one RK3566 device out, it would probably just be better to buy a used RG353v - dualboot Android for the lols
It's better documented than the Allwinner right?
You mean, the chip specifically?
yeah
Sounds likely, but I think one of the devs would be able to answer this better
that's what happens when you put actors who have never played a handheld on your promo for your handheld
it's a gang sign, they're repping their set
They're just holding it posh style.
I prefer to hold mine Jedi style.....they don't last long is the downside.
wouldn't it be the reverse of posh since the pinky is on the inside?
I dunno, I'm not British! They're doing some fancypants business with that pinky, in any case.
Maybe the 28xx is an ai hallucination and that freeze frame is proof, ai is terrible at hands after all.
This timer has the colourway I’d get if I got an orange and a white and button swapped lmao
ohh! yes, blue buttons on orange would look cool 😄
Just counting them minutes until Russ's review today or tomorrow 👀
About the lack of wifi, do you beleive that it will be possible to use a Wifi->USB-C dongle of some kind ? This wouldn't be convenient for Retro-achievements but for initial scraping with Batocera for instance, or SSH access from time to time, it would do the job.
Well we know it supports USB host so it just depends on the software
So, I need to ask MuOS and Batocera devs, right ?
I dunno about that, but if they plan on supporting the device & the firmware already has a networking stack then odds are pretty good it'll work
Dunno about stock yet, not that anyone will actually run stock (if there are other options)
I might run it for a bit on stock, just to see how it has progressed, there's been notable changes since it first launched with the plus
RetroGameCorps' review is out!
Street date is probably before the end of this month right
The new Anbernic RG28XX is the first mini device that packs real power -- enough to play systems like N64 and Dreamcast. Let's test out the size and shape of this device, its controls and ergonomics, and to see whether or not it'll be a good fit for you and your use case.
The RG28XX is not up for sale yet, but I'll add links once they are avai...
And in the like second sentence of the video I did not put "28xx" and "2.8 inch screen" together at all prior. Which also means I never put "35XX" and "3.5 inch screen" together.
Makes sense though :). Rg and xx on the other hand...
Retro Game, obviously
yeah this seems like a winner. as long as cfws can figure out the screen/bootloader
it’s time to revive my spreadsheet https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/112l0zithCgB3pQRxW9NJwoayHTo60lRziXgg4_Ck3ko/htmlview
D-pad only games
I think on anbernic firmware, tapping the power button makes the dpad fire analog inputs and tap again to go back
Not sure how they got that thing figured out
RetroArch keymapping tends to be strict
how is the fps counter positioned like this? is it adjustable in the settings?
It's because, as he said, the screen is rotated.
This is how the software is expecting the screen to be used. It's also why, when he shows off DBZ, the subtitles are on the side.
As for if it's adjustable, no clue
oh i'm quite early into the video
will this become a minefield for custom firmware somehow?
I would assume it's something they'd have to keep in mind, but I doubt it'd be a massive hinderance either.
did russ not compare/mention the MM or i completely missed it
I don't think so. The most he mentions is that Miyoo has the upcoming A30, and asks if viewers will wait and see with that device before getting a 28XX or not.
The only comparisons are to the recent 35XX devices, the 280v/m, 300x, and the TrimUI Smart iirc.
is the MM screen also rotated? or just this 28XX one
interesting where they sourced this screen
Somehow it's adjusted for the HDMI out...?
The rotation part, not the scaling part
they probably rotated it when through HDMI ya
No clue on MM, I've never used it or looked much into it.
1st review vid and not yet convinced to get it having an MM already
Rotated screens. Hopefully cfw devs can fit it. I think it's always a headache for them.
Yeah portrait screen makes me less certain good cfw will come really quickly
how to shoot yourself in the foot with this
anyway, I think this is not better on the a30 side, I think I read that the Onion team would have to consider the feasability of a turned around screen
For a while you'll likely not need a new device unless something im the MM really bugs you
its only a small dilemma really, current vertical MM means i can use it one-handed well, but horizontal 28xx is more comfortable with 2 hands
i have the ktr1 already for longer play with 2 hands anyways so its not the end
Didn’t expect a rotated screen
Huh, well that might explain why suddenly both are able to use 480p 2.8” screens when miyoo had so much trouble procuring them before
huh, rotated screens are quite common in retrohandhelds, looks like anbernic just did a bad job setting it up here
Did that part of the anbernic naming system never register with you then?
Nope
tbf, so many of these handhelds just throw random letters and numbers into their names, I didn't think much of it.
yeah, until they went out of phase with the XX theirs had a clear logic of screensize/generation/modifier suffixes
I more meant all handhelds. Because the entire market was filled to the brim with randomly lettered and numbered handhelds, I never put much thought into why Anbernic's were named the names they were.
Now all we need is a release date
powkiddy are probably the worst for naming, at least the r35 etc people just randomly increment theirs, you get all sorts of weird shit from pk
Powkiddy alone is probably why I never put thought into why a handheld is named anything.
No you don’t need this device then
Fwiw this device looks banger
Definitely getting this handheld.
Wifi is a non-factor for me. It'd be nice to have, but not having it doesn't impact me either way.
yeah its a nice to have but not a big deal at all
But then I also don't use RetroAchievements, and for a handheld like this I'd probably just use MinUI or something similar.
retroachievements are useless on a pocket device. im not gonna play this at home. if they allowed an offline mode sure but they don't so i couldnt care less
Could hotspot it with a mobile phone, like Russ mentioned in his video.
And I don't really care about having box art or title screens for the UI. I'd rather just have a basic list view.
MinUI is the best for smaller handhelds
the xx is just there to designate a separate line from what used to be their main line of the devices, i.e. the 351, 405 or 556 type of devices
stands for "cheap" basically
no
also does not appear to be rotated on the A30
didn't seem to me like it was rotated from the tuberviejuner video, but maybe they are just handling it better on the software side, hard to tell
https://www.reddit.com/r/miyooa30/comments/1bzpq1c/onionos_developer_shares_some_insights_about_the/
I knzw I read it somewhere
oh okay
then I guess it's confirmed it's also rotated on the A30
kind of weird that both Anbernic and Miyoo would end up with a rotated screen at the same time
Same screen?
maybe they copied something of each other's hardware design internally
possible yeah
My guess is the MM would’ve struggled with a portrait screen based on its relatively ancient architecture
I can't imagine there are that many 2.8 inch at 640p by 480p screens to choose from.
Likely they both just went with whatever the cheapest one is.
Does the A30 also have the same brightness issue, where lowest isn't that dim and highest is not that bright?
i'll wait on this until cfw is figured out and the portrait screen isn't an issue, but i'm excited for it still
don't think other videos tested this yet
but it's worth noting that Anbernic has a "night mode"
whatever that does
C'mon Anbernic, just give us a date.
Since its a different screen I think it should have its own channel separate from the other XX Plus models 🤔
yeah, miyoo mini and mini + have separate channels anyway
yeah sounds like cfws wont work for this straight out the box at least so there might be some notable differences
shouldn't there be a channel for the a30 too, now that they're basically in the same almost-released state?
Well, huh... The 28XX was a device I was really interested in but the screen being so dim and rotated so you have to manually configure it for correct aspect ratios kinda killed my interest. If custom firmware is able to fix those two issues then my interest may be renewed, but for now though the RG35XX H just seems like a better (albeit slightly larger) device for outdoor on-the-go use with less hassles to deal with.
