You’ll get opinions on both sides but ASA is where I would go. Community is growing where ASE is slowly losing players. Plus a lot of the new expansions add a ton of new variety to PvP and I think balance the game a bit better. Additions like the Tesla tower help defending tribes hold on to their territory more easily and add more options than just plant x heavies or tek.

I said, “Valg is the best map in ARK change my mind,” exactly two months ago.
Well, you actually managed to change my mind.

Not sure if Wildcard or you map creators have realized, but the game is dying, and it’s definitely not because of a lack of PvE content. It’s because every new map is giga trash for PvP. You literally nerf every cave that comes out or remove good spots like the Valg trees, but hey, North Ice stays the same, really smart move. And for no fcking reason, you also had to make the game hyper complex by adding dino traits, weapon traits, armor traits, yada yada yada.

You might not realize it since the PvE community is the majority of your player base, but it’s a fact that the PvP community kept this game alive and you’re screwing us over with everything you do.

• Remove Dreads
• Remove Teslas
• Remove the option to place turrets anywhere on the mesh
• Remove traits
• Give us good caves again (there’s a reason why official is way more dead than unofficial: it’s called custom caves)
• Give us the OG cryos back, but keep the feature that prevents a creature from being cryoed after taking Damage

And I think the contract with Nitrado was only for 2 years. If that’s really the case, then get partnerships with other server hosts again. Right now, every unofficial owner has two options: pay thousands for their own machines, or pay thousands to access poorly performing Nitrado servers with a support that’s absolutely trash.

Nekatus is demented.
He made exactly one good map in his lifetime: ASE Valg and now he even managed to screw that one up.
Fjordur was just a big piece of Swiss cheese; you couldn’t walk 5 meters without spotting a mesh hole.
Whatever that PvE map was that he released at the start of ASA, it’s dead now.

Astreos has 0 useful surface caves, but hey, at least we got like 3 massive underwater caves no one can build in unless they’re endgame because it’s so resource heavy.
And now we’ve got what? ASA Valg with 0 good spots at all because no one in their right mind wants to build in spider cave, and everything else got removed or turned into abysmal garbage.
Can’t wait for ASA Fjordur to be even worse.
I bet lab cave is going to get a second entrance, probably on the surface.
Or ice cave getting the entrance of a bronto.

@Amaru I agree about the maps not having good base spots. But I think thats not really the real issue. The real issue is its far to easy to raid a base that takes days/weeks/months to get going. I don't think its healthy for the game to have maps with ridiculous unpushable rat holes, unless there is lots of them for multiple tribes to use. Not healthy for 1/2 ridiculous unraidable ratholes and then a map of nothing else but land bases. I think having bases out in the open more is great, but think that would only work if they introduced new mechanics or measures to balance that.

Unless of course you are a mega alpha tribe with some ridiculous defenses/spam everywhere

Ark is currently implemented in a way that its only viable to play long term if you are an alpha tribe.

The game is going to die fast at this rate. They won’t fix cheating. They can’t afford it. ARK 2 will most likely not become a thing. And to top it all off wildcard has lost most of its original core community since the start of ASE. ASE originally was popular because of PVP and the game was designed for it as well. Overtime that changed to PvE because of the cheating, but playing the game on PvE removed about 50% of the layer of content this game has to offer which is why people get bored fast on PvE and invest less time on the game. Or they just move on to another game. To be honest the idea that this game could ever just exclusively be PvE sounds delusional. ARK 2 won’t even be successful if that is the route they take (which likely won’t even release). That is the truth Wildcard needs to face.

I’d like to remind everyone that ARK: Evolved was natively supported on Linux, while Ascended only works through Proton because the devs didn’t need to make a native version thanks to Proton’s existence (when Evolved came out, Proton didn’t exist, so they had to make it native).

Welcome to UE5 games and Wildcard’s patching behavior.
3.3 GB is the amount of added data (the things you have to download)
but since UE5 uses a file type that’s incredibly old, you have to reinstall the whole file the moment even a single bit is changed.
That means if you have a file that’s, say, 15 GB in size and Wildcard adds 1 GB of new content to it, you’ll have to reinstall the entire 15 GB file even though only 1 GB was changed.

The only things you can really do are free up space on your drive, reinstall the game completely every time they release a big update, or as I’d recommend, get a larger disk.
