So my thought is that to satisfy “both sides” WC is using base ASA to satisfy the Ark 1 oriented players and new content like LC to stretch Ark’s mechanics and experiment towards Ark 2

ASA was made because Snail wasted all the money ASE made on a smart car investment that collapsed.
They were already working on a graphics overhaul to be free.
It doesn't even make sense that Ark 2 is nowhere close to release with what their EA release date originally was for it.
ASE's codebase was a disaster, but so is ASA's. They flat out copy and pasted the UE4 code into UE5, which UE5 hates with a passion in general, on top of meaning it fixed nothing in the process in the way of their spaghetti code and underlining issues.
Their claims of "rebuilt from the ground up" is a blatant lie.

They actually do (or did) have testers. The issue is they were part of mega tribes and actively kept exploits / broken things in the game without telling the devs so that they and their groups could use it before patch.

The infamous Mek rockets taking down 100 cap walls / towers in .01 seconds being a prime example of this.

Outdated and refined are two separate qualities. Games like the Bungie Halos have drastically reduced mechanics and movement systems compared to games like COD or Ghost Recon. I don’t see tech as anything sci-fi (the lore of Ark and Ark 2 will remain sci-fi regardless of the available weapons), and I think locking in this case means target locking for combat, which is pretty common in a lot of modern games and is usually optional

Souls games also very much have combos, special attacks, and skill points…but they’re all nearly useless since you often only have enough space to get 2 light attacks off before you die in one hit 😂 (though the skill points tend to be stats based like Ark 1’s so I’m also unsure of how Ark 2 will showcase the interplay of souls combat and skill trees)

I think a good idea for ark two and maybe ascended is if all aggressive/ territorial creatures get a string of code that analyzes creatures they are going to attack based on level and stats and decides whether it is worth attacking them or not, for instance a max stat giga would not be targeted by anything other than titans due to their sheer damage and the wild creatures would “know” it wouldn’t be a good idea to attack and maybe at a certain parameter that if it gets a certain value it overrides the analysis and attacks anyway. Would make it more lively

What I’m try to say is the apex predator thing needs more work and shouldn’t be based on drag weight. Whenever a creature decides to attack someone or something it should run a tiny simulation of the fight before actually attacking to determine if you or your creature is worth fighting with some parameters to allow for the creature to make a mistake making it possible that a creature that can kill you won’t attack you in that encounter or a small creature attacks you because it made a mistake

I think that’s a really tricky because of two things. 1) simulating real creature judgement would mean that most creatures wouldn’t attack you on a giga…but in ark (a game) the idea is that a player traveling long distances has their health chipped away by many small fights. The idea is actually that yes, you should win those. It’s how many of them chained together can you sustain

2. there’s a lot of ark’s combat (that to be fair may be absent in ark 2) that relies on getting attacked by multiple species and creatures at once. If you ask every creature to calculate the “ideal animal group size” to attack that can get really tricky, and if you opt to have none of them attack you kinda just made the game significantly easier

Though I very much agree drag weight should be a start rather than the sole metric for what creatures don’t aggro to stuff like a Rex or giga, I think a more simple system of “X species won’t attack Y species unless provoked or unless X species becomes more aggressive in a pack or after some other condition is met” may work better to solve the issue you’re highlighting. Especially if there are fewer creatures on ark 2’s map (it sounds like there may be fewer creatures but they congregate in herds and packs)

Currently for example a tamed raptor isn’t reasonably doing anything to a tamed giga because the bitecone is so wide the raptor just gets one shot. Though you’d want to of course gameify it a bit to avoid as you said one bullet or arrow being lethal because “that’s what real life would say”

The issue is that this “50%” comes from players who paid $0 for mods. The income should come 100% from Wc, who is paying modders to make content for their game. That's a great opinion to have. But I disagree with it. I'm not pushing for all mods to be paid, I really like that a lot of the best of them are free. But getting a job for a game dev is really really hard, and I see this as a way that wc is not only providing a place for people to learn in a professional system, but also to not have to waste years of their time to get "portfolio" experience.

You might not like paying $5 for a mod, but I see that as helping people out. If you don't want to support modders, you don't have to.

Imo this is literally one of the best things a company has done to help newer developers.

Taking many of the best mods out of the pool for players via a paywall is a horrific mistake. And it changes the cost burden from a studio choosing to pay for the select best mods to incorporate into their game to the players who now have to decide what of the huge volume of paid mods they feel obligated to pay for (and they’ll of course ignore many of them because the cost of all paid mods is staggering). Patreon and other means have always existed so idk what you’re talking about, and that’s assuming a studio ignores an excellent mod (which WC has on numerous occasions shown they’ve paid modders to make their content official)

Playing enshrouded casually took about 100 hours to reach endgame. In current Asa, playing casually, it still takes about 100 hours to reach end game. For most people progression never was getting bps, it was building the base they wanted, getting the dinos they wanted, making the farm they wanted. Having to grind 100 hours of drops to get a single bp to progress was more a frustration than an experience. I personally think 100 hours to endgame is good, and Asa does that, the issue is that the progression doesn't feel balanced because it isn't. If they make changes in Ark2 along those lines, it should be to make progression feel balanced while keeping a reasonable timescale. I would really like seeing the mass breeding for 6 months scale disappear, and make everything less op in that sense. It just needs to scale better and be more intentional.

Asa issue with balance is the same as it was with ase. It's reactive to an old system that wasn't intentional enough

Hmm I am playing Enshrouded now, took about 150 hours in the current patch but also doing most of the quests a long the way + no wiki
I digress -- I am happy with games like Enshrouded having this pace for progression, same with other single player games

Multiplayer games must use a different formula or else they get very boring, very fast. I am not asking for maximum tedium, but it's a shame people who are day 1 or day 300 both have the same gear at times (potentially)

Yeah, Asa isn't balanced. But ase wasn't either. It would take about 5 hours before people found the broken drops and had capped gear anyway. Enshrouded progression feels good, because you have a good metric on your actual progression, and for the most part it feels intentional. Ase/Asa balance (especially with dinos) does not feel intentional, because largely it wasn't. It was exploits that got official,and then they kept it that way.

They did mess up distributions for loot tables tho, but those are mostly fixed.

i am 54 and have been left handed all my life .. got the high price mmo mouse for left hand and all that stuff ..there is very few left hand key bords and the ones that are only move the num pad from right side to the left .. the way the letters on the key bord stay the same .. played many shooters .. some like sony socom had the left hand controller config and the left hand animations .. i did not improved my play .. for was so use to the right hand animations ... the would in most things is set up around right hand people we left handers just got use to it ..

Also forgot to mention left handed shooting does improve gameplay especially when in 3rd person and 1st person when your being flanked at any left corner, the current state ark ascended is in everyone runs left and right with a stuck veiw over the right shoulder this tends to create battles where you kinda feel like a fish with a big fin and little fin on the other side like your only choice is turn in one direction most of the time because its all thats available in 3rd person right now.

Well there can be some middle ground met for both sides of this particular spectrum such as filters for servers that don't allow 3rd person for those who feel as if left corner peaking is abuse. Although first left handed shooting would still be involved and adaptation would be required anyway. All in all it would make for interesting engagements.

Like I was stoked for lost colony and I've went against my word with spending any more money on wildcard because how they just dropped ase like a bad habit time and money gone on maps that we can't get back. Anything can be better, but most people's expectations are based on the solid 10+ years experience we've already had with Ark. There's little point in putting up high expectations at this stage. Ark 2 will still have the same developers, still have Snail, likely still have Nitrado. There's no way anyone can genuine expect significant improvement until we actually see Ark 2.

Ark has had a history of performance issues, I would argue it's absolutely worth talking about. Especially since Ark ASA definitely reused code from ASE and was not a complete rewrite from the ground up like they stated. People could be concerned some of the old inefficient code could make it's way into ark 2 for budget reasons. I would expect a studio as old as Wild Card to learn lessons and fix them for their next game, that includes performance.

To summarize, speculating on performance is not baseless given the history.

It's not a good idea for Ark IMO -- works okay for Rust and Minecraft, because those servers are either short term, or can host 500+ players on a single server.
Ark 2 would need servers that can host a similar amount of players for a 'sense of community', else you will have to resort to something similar to the Official Network.

Like if anything I'd like to see a more MMO approach to Ark 2:

• cross-server tribes
• unique player/tribe names (no endless 'Human' in 'Tribe of Human')
• more tribe based perks, potentially a tribe-based imprint for dinos (an additional bonus similar to player imprinting)
