IF Ark 2 ever sees the light, it won’t have tek stuff as we know it. Jeremy explained the tek in Arat Prime will be something “magical”. Players won’t completely dominate the tek stuff.

Players will be able to use pieces of tek. Like tek scraps to craft special weapons.

But unfortunately they never got into the details

So, here are some references of both images.
The ARK-1 rex is really, really fucking big. (it looks smaller in-game, due to fps perspectives. Same issue happens in Subnautica. With the leviathans being larger then people think.)
We can both agree that the rex is a kaiju. Man is huge.
Though, with the two references we have for ARK-2. It seems a bit inconsistent.
On one side, it looks actually around the same size as the ARK-1 rex.
But on the other, where Vince is only a few feet away. It looks a lot more smaller. Even if we imagine it being not hunched down.
And as seen in the last screenshot. It doesn't seem too much larger compared to that Aratai.

Think it's just a inconsistency issue.

I don't even know why people hard latch on to "realism" for dinos in Ark/Ark 2. in ASE/ASA it's already stated in lore that the dinos/animals are HYPER modified to be able to ADAPT to any environment extremely fast. This means they would quickly mutate/evolve to handle whatever environment they are in, and would almost instantly not completely "match up" to realistic versions IRL.

My only complaint in terms of "realism" is I think that Rex/Giga should be equivalent in that they are relatively equal, but fulfill a different Niche, IE Gigas should be a larger version of an Allo, quick with bleeding/shred attacks, where Rex should essentially be a behemoth of a "tank" while also having crushing attacks that hit extremely hard. idc if they're both the size of a Rex, the giga as is, or something in between. But at least make them relative to one another to add in diversity to the game.

All of that to say, no matter what you see in Ark 2, they would almost immediately adapt to the environment, because it's what they're genetically modified to do to not only survive, but thrive.

At this moment in time Tyrannosaurus is the larger animal, there may have been larger specimens of Giganotosaurus than rex but the issue is we have no evidence to support it. Additionally rex is more anatomically bulky so it would take an absolutely immense Giga to outsize a rex, something potentially nearing 50 feet and we just haven’t found any theropod of that length or mass outside of rex. I think they definitely popularized it in the present day cycle. Everything comes back around in cycles. Things get popular and then drop off the face of the planet again. It's hard to say anything was the first, as you could break things down more and more and keep going back through history. Buuuut, the current popularity of open world-survival-crafting was undoubtedly thrust forward with ASE. And the genre has been thriving since. It's also one of those genres that can do incredibly well with smaller indie studios, allowing for a lot more creativity and freedom compared to AAA titles that are trying to "game" the capitalist system in a souless formula driven market.

So, ASE probably propelled the current cycle of interest forward, even though they also weren't the first in this genre. Pretty sure there were literally people 500 years ago paying other people to take them on excursions that were basically this genre of game.

ill admit its close, but no its not quite there. i have spent loads of hours looking for similar games, exploring tags and genre to find proper survival games like ark, and although some have submerged in later times then there hasnt been anything matching ark before and its still very hard to find. there are not many games that truly have that genre as ark does
ark, conan exiles, atlas, stationeers, eco, the front, palworld, (maybe no mans sky and space engineers aswell, those are very close but also quite not there as its lacking alot of the content that this genre carries)
its quite a unique style. i have 39 survival games and i love many of them but only those select few can match this genre. even steam struggles with correctly categorise it as it requires serious hunting to find, but user tag open world survival craft helps alot, it finds that genre more easily and leaves out the ones that doesnt contain all the elements

I feel like you might be giving too much credence to "Ark" itself being a genre. It's not. It's a style within a very broad genre, or a collection of genres. But Ark is just a specific game within said genre. You're not going to find anything exactly like it because people will do different things with different games. Every games that is taking inspiration from the crafting element will undoubtedly try to do something to set them apart. Survival is almost always Food/Water and maybe Oxygen. That's kinda the staple. Unless you want to be Green Hell, in which case you are managing every gd ailment with 20 different jungle remedies you pray you've already made the right one for or have room to carry the supplies to make them. lolol And open world gets played with in terms of location/setting/ambience. But open world is just "big open space, no loading screens everywhere".

Ark is a style within a genre. Just like Souslike is, in reality, just a style within like "hack and slash RPG". That's why you get people saying it's not the first. You're arguing for a very niche style being a genre in itself while others are focusing on the broader elements of what a genre actually is, regardless of the specific style. (You could also call is a sub-genre, which Soulslike is, on steam anyway. But it's not a genre-genre, even though it's stupidly popular. lol)

It's funny, too. Cause I love NMS and Ark. And my mind was briefly flabbergasted that you put them in a similar style of gameplay. Which, I actually think you're right about it, but they also feel so different in some of the other elements. You don't 'need' to, if you don't want to.
Currently outside of some QoL changes, it's just ASE that's more hardware intensive, and with less content.
I recommend for you to wait until they release more maps. At least till all of the story maps are rereleased so a bulk of the content is back.

ARK-2 seems (from the store page) to be more like Conan Exiles, with more empahsis on story. (though they've repeated countless times that it isn't a story game, and it'll have online servers and a PvE/PvP mode like ARK-1 has. So it'll probably be more like Gen2 where it has its open world aspect, with story missions you can do.)

Honestly, I kind of dislike ASA. Just personally though.
It does what so many remakes/remasters do, and make it a graphically better game, sure. But ruining the artstyle its predecessor had.

Not a take I support at all from that guy above, ASA is by far probably among one of the best "remakes" I have played and experienced. The only exception I took is I dove into trying out all the mods like everyone else which are cool at times, but I'm not a fan of the servers with primal chaos and mods like that as they don't just change higher level dinos, but early stage dinos. Getting a Pteranodon out the gate not happening.

When I stepped away from the mods and found an unofficial server cluster moderately boosted without mods is where I feel like ASA really thrives. Just in regards to maps, The island got 10x more than a facelift it got some meaningful QoL changes. Scorched Earth is a map I didn't care for on ASE as it seemed to much like an empty sandbox, but ASA I actually enjoy going to SE now with how much better it is.

Now I'm not against mods entirely, any server that just uses structure mods, any color dino, etc that enhances base game without completely altering how you have to play I am all for.

But honestly ASA unmodded is underrated.

Yeah, it hasn't been canceled at the very least, and honestly I don't know if they could afford pushing back release that far from when the game was suppose to come out. Especially considering the fragements we've seen of the game.

This is just my personal opinion, but I'm finding it pretty boring to play ASA. It should exist for the people who like it, no need for them to lose out on it, but a wholly new game would be nice imo.

I don't think they're connected to such an extent to where that would be an issue imo. Each game appeals to a different audience, and while there is some crossover, I don't think it would matter to same extent as say like a COD entry and a Battlefield entry clashing with each other on release.

Take it from a modders point of view here as well. I may be in the minority in this regard, but with what's possible given the current engine (despite the visual fidelity) there's not much I think I can do to make my projects as good as they could be. From my minimal understanding of game development, something wonky would've had to gone down for that rex model to get a complete redesign from what we have seen.
3D assets for characters take a lot of time and money, as there's the conceptual, modeling, sculpting, uv-unwrapping, texturing, rigging, weight painting, and finally animations.

Train can correct me of course, as they know more about this stuff then I do. But I think it's a decent estimate to imagine ARK-2 being 'around' what we've seen so far with the in-engine trailers, and the leaked 3D rex model.

I can really only speak on this from a modding point of view, where the majority of the people who do it are wholly autonomous unto themselves. With that being said though, when game development is a job you're being paid for, regardless of what gets rehashed, there has to be at least something elsewise you don't have a studio.

Looking at their financials etc, ASA is not a truly long term project outside of fan loyalty and retention. It is not very profitable though. They NEED ark2 and they know this. Now the real question is if they can get the bugs and jank down to a minimum for the game. if it plays and behaves just like ASE, I dont think the game will find insane success. Yeah I thought about applying to a few openings I saw over there. The difference between MH etc and ASA is that (I believe, not 100% sure) that ark is pushing the boundaries on nanite, lumen, ray tracing, level streaming etc. to the max and they lack proper knowledge to optimize it well. When you potentially have billions of triangles on screen, even tho nanite is super efficient, it still slogs down hardcore.

IMHO, and what do I really know, but I think they need to hire a few people that are actual EXPERTS in optimizations inside of UE5. Not even close. Ark 2 will look great it will not be on the level of GTA VI. If we just look at RDR 2 and look at the fact that an Xbox One game, it not even new gen and yet it blows away every other game and that includes ASA now. RDR 2 is currently the best looking graphically we have.

For me I wouldn't even want to compare those because GTA VI is pure new gen so that wall they had for RDR 2 does not exist for GTA VI so no there no chance Ark 2 will be even close

Anyone who played ASE for the ambience of the enviroment and moved to ASA knows just how ASA is 50x better than ASE. From graphical improvements to game play ASA is ALL around better. The maps alone have a ton more details and some areas added to them that weren't in ASE.

I fully understand that WC needs both time and money to work on Ark II, but I think it's equally important for the players to understand that ASE/A isn't the only thing they want to do.

ASE/A is still going to exist by the time Ark II comes out, and even if it's in a state of 'incompletion' however WC may judge that, I doubt that they will just up and abandon the game, so, hopefully, early into its lifecycle.

I don't like this one or the other mentality between ASA and Ark II, both can exist at the same time. At least in the abstract.

I'd rather see WC try something new and succeed than keep trying to breath new life into the ASE formula

Component based crafting is probably the one thing I'm excited for the most, at least from a modding point of view. My biggest modding project adds a cottage building set to the game, and you can pick and chose the material of wall, the frame, the mesh object its using. I'd love to do away with that and be more precise with the materials. Blue plaster will only ever make a blue wall, Black wood finish would color the frame. Stuff like that.

This could just be the former Anthropology major in me coming out here, but it would be cool to see the early game of Ark II include a lot of prehistoric tool making techniques. Before you make a pix axe or whatever, you use a stone to shape other stones into blades and what not. Chip off bits of obsidian for knives etc. Would be a nice inclusion imo.

I also think the easiest way to make it a hit conceptually (I suspect not so easy to implement) is mounted souls like combat, but tbh any number of the other mentioned features show a ton of promise
