I’m not calling you out specifically…even my confidence in ark 2 being a near rather than abstractly far term release has waned in recent weeks. I do think it’s not that odd to withhold ark 2 news at this time, since ASA is fresh and attention should rightly be focused on it given its state and the fact its making money rather than sinking it (ark 2 makes no money until it comes out after all)

I believe people are worried that while yes, it's the same game in vein. The changes will be too much.
You can see this between Fallout 3/New Vegas and 4.
When Fallout 4 was released, it caused a huge divide in the community that still lasts today.
While Fallout 4 was an enjoyable video game. It fails to be a enjoyable Fallout experience, which may happen with ARK-2.
Especially since just like the Fallout IP, no one knows what the 'core' of ARK is about.
You ask one person what they think makes ARK an interesting game that another person will disagree and view something else that's essential to the core of ARK.

This seems to be a theme with sequels that take a huge leap into changing things up. As you don't really see this type of divides in communities in something like the Dark Souls trilogy. Where most of the community agrees that 3 is the peak of the trilogy when it comes to gameplay, and that the second one was the worse.
And fundamentally, Dark Souls 3 is more or less an upgraded Dark Souls 1. Same general gameplay, but refined it.
While Dark Souls 2 changed the gameplay quite a bit, if I recall. Which made it an outlier.

But my confidence is pretty low right now, because I can’t tell their real intentions regarding the franchise. By that I mean: Is Ark 2 really a priority? If not, that’s a shame.

Also, GTA 3 came in a time where social media was in its infancy. So not a lot of people could actually speak their opinions on it.

I think a key thing to distinguish here is successful at the present state of development. It’s likely too much in the prototype stage to release to EA without serious risk. I think the rest of the discussion here is pretty valid - ark 2 is intentionally testing the waters with ways to advance the series rather than mint a clone game. Sometimes those efforts pay off, and sometimes they don’t

“Divide the community = bad dev” is a mildly amusing line of reasoning given that creating a new community that consists of old vets to a series and new players is often sufficient if not superior to endlessly investing in the exact same audience. And that’s IF the folks who dislike the new game actually dislike it enough to not purchase it or invest in it (they often pay for everything and play while complaining - or play less but still pay)

In all honesty, the developer's need to just do a major update to Ark 1 like mojang & Microsoft do with minecraft. Stop trying to make a second when you need to work on the first. That said, I’m afraid they will eventually cancel it. I mean, I find it hard to believe Ark 2 will get any attention before end of 2025. If so, how much work Ark 2 would still need? Another year? End of 2026?

I just lost hope… we were supposed to hear more about the rest of the franchise just after ASA release, but they just showed us the ASA roadmap, and talked a bit about the series. Also saying everyone on the team is focused on ASA isn’t good for Ark 2. Well, we will see. That’s just my assessment from the current situation.

There was going to be a closed beta, but the way you got in was through the respawned bundle, and now the respawned bundle isn't a thing so I'm not sure how you would get into the ark 2 beta program. Hopefully not through Survival Ascended because I don't really have a reason to buy that.

They reference parrying, dodges, guarding, heavy/light attacks, etc. This implies that ranged weapons will likely not be effective once you've been engaged by another player/npc, unlike in current ark 1 where it's much more effective to shoot someone no matter how far the players are from each other.

Getting disconnected and reconnecting on Unofficials - where the majority of players play - is lightning fast now. Don't need to wait 20-40 minutes for mods or the server to realize you're disconnected before logging back in. Server startup time is way faster too.

But most of these changes aren't needed for PvE.
There's a degree of game balance, and player agency.
I agree that podding a rex into a cave is shitty and makes it hella easy. But on something like PvE, that should be up to the player to decide if they wanna cheese the game, or actually play the game properly.
Lets say they removed the ability to bring Theri's and veggie cakes to the Dragon.
That'd be shitty on PvE, as now they've removed player agency. And forcing you to play in a specific way Wildcard intended. Which defeats the purpose of a sandbox game.

Without loud as fuck ACs everywhere, it's hard to find a spot on the Island that doesn't have insane temperature swings. Is there some type of informative guide about everything we know about ARK 2? Pretty much all I could find is that it's going to have a slower, more dangerous gameplay style with souls like combat.

That already sounds great to me but I'm curious about things like are they going to balance the dinos properly? A Giga was barely bigger than a Rex yet in ASE/ASA the giga is way overpowered.

There are many animals that need utility, secondary and tertiary attacks/abilities because they have no use really.

I disagree. The ASE/ASA still needs a lot of touchups, bug fixes, and just overall better game balance/systems. I'm sure it will have a more casual playerbase remain playing once Ark 2 launches.

From what I have read so far, ARK 2 moving to a slower, more skill-based gameplay is welcoming for the survival genre. The fact that we will supposedly have skill trees, hostile NPCs, customizable armor/weapons so we can all look unique... A lot of cool features have been discussed. Dynamic events, building templates, even considerably better AI that track by sight, smell and sound.

My main concerns are going to be making sure people can't cheat (under mesh exploits run rampant in ASE), dino balance (no reason for gigas/carchar) or any dino for that matter to be so much stronger than the rest. Every dino/creature needs to be balanced, serve a purpose, provide utility, and have cool things about them.

Personally, the obvious launch/server rental issues aside, and the fact that we need to wait until 2025 until all the existing DLC that comes with ASE is available, I'm yet to find any compelling reason to not love ASA just as much as I love ASE. The annoying part with ASE for me, was the fact that to enjoy all the "items" that came with the DLCs, you had to install them, not just own them.. for people in your situation, the base game should contain everything that is unlocked through owning the DLCs, then you can install whichever dlc you want to play with rather than having to install them all

ark 2 is at minimum some time away from now. Until we get news, assume it won't come out in the near future

the proposed release period for Ark 2 right now is end of 2024, but we will see for certain if that will remain so during this year

it's a new game but be VERY careful about comparing it to ark 1 (ASE or ASA). Ark 2, unlike ark 1, will have more mechanical combat [blocks, dodges, parries, etc], more emphasis on world events like helping hurt creatures or fighting in dens, and a more rich crafting system. It's quite likely going to remain true to ark's goals of being a survival sandbox revolving around taming...but I suspect many other ark 1 elements will be changed a great deal

some that are being changed are ultimately for the better tho imo, and that's just the stuff that's being changed and not added like World events/Aratai/New ai and component based crafting that we know off at this point

The way I see this going is ark 2 won't come out until the roadmap for ascended is finished

we shall see if that is the case if the gameplay reveal drops this year. also pretty sure they got 2 different teams working on both projects unless that changed.

With that in mind, we do not plan to showcase any gameplay/screenshots/videos of ARK 2 this year; however, we intend to keep you informed and engaged in the development process by regularly showcasing more ARK 2 assets in the months ahead, leading to our gameplay reveal next year.

Combat-wise, yes. As to what all that exactly entails, we don't know, but the game is still open world PvP multiplayer with base building and taming

“Souls-like” might end up being something new or it might end up being like Atlas (hopefully improved), and the reason I keep saying this is that that’s what they had defined Atlas’ combat style before its release.

Do people still want it to be a thing? Comparing it to ATLAS is.. interesting since it was so broken. ASE was really broken for years, some things never got fixed and now ASA is making good progress but also reproducing a lot of the issues they had even fixed earlier. There's some genuine improvements but the server backend is still duct tape and best wishes, today's rollback shows they can't properly trace back and wipe the tribes using exploits and instead punish literally everyone on their official servers. I'm forgiving a lot to ASA out of nostalgia and whatnot but another game I will not be so forgiving, and i'm not holding my breath for things having changed if Ark 2 ever comes out. Just my 0 cents, those millions from Ark 1 sales need to show in a finished, polished product with servers that actually function. If you can't do that there's no reason for this product to ever come out.

unless ofc you don't buy ark or ark 2 to play official...in which case the suite of concerns relating to bugs/stability matters more than exploits for the most part
