How does difficulty differ between maps when using custom difficulty settings? Is it that the spawn points are set for ranges within the allowed spectrum (based on difficulty) and some maps have more clear progression (like The Island) and some maps don’t ?

if you use the ingame slider that will change depending on the map island is 120 but some free maps are 150

Also, is it strictly always better to tame creatures at the highest possible level you can find them? I thought it may be advantageous that you can hand manage their level up points by hand if you get them as low level, but I'm probably wrong based on what people keeps recommending.

high level for max level 150 is 135+, some people dont like 130s but i tame them anyway.
it is always advantageous to tame high levels over low levels, every creature has 88 points you can add by hand so you want the best starting stats. also, stats are added based on a % of the base stat, so higher the base stat, the more you get per level

Island is a perfectly fine map imo, and does its job as a starter map well. it's got the classic and fleshed out progression, nice varity and design, not an overwhelming amount of 'stuff'. SE is fun but more challenging and needs another map for variety unless you want to get very heavy on customising. Ext imo is a cool concept with poor execution. Very different in style though. rag is my second least favourite map and if you want 'island like but more content' I'd go for Lost Island or maybe fjordur (hard to recommend given i havent played it much). But you can always start out on Island and then travel to another map to tame some wyverns to bring back with you (though SE is best experienced without transfers, like Aberrtion)

However, it’s a QoL for a lot of people. Particularly on large maps like LI, it’s nice that it doesn’t take 10 min holding W to get back to your base because you forgot your GPS

So personally I’d keep it off on any smaller map like island, but larger maps I understand the appeal

Torpor scales from weapon damage I think. But there are conditions you have to keep in mind. Tranq arrows aply not only instant torpor but over time torpor that soaks into target through 5 second so instead of making a pincushion out of your tame target try spacing your shots a bit. Also fliers take massive bonus damage from projectile weapons, so there is a legitimate risk of you killing them before they are K.O.-d if you use bow/crossbow instead of longneck rifle with tranq darts.

It's also worth to check your game settings/the server's settings you play on, as those can vastly change how much damage things do and how hard/easy it is to tame dinos, try using dododex and input your tame's type and level and set up your server's settings and weapon qualities, and it can give you a calculation on how much tranq arrows you need or whether trying to use a certain type of weapon would just out right kill the target under your conditions.

the chemistry bench is a big one though, it crafts items for 4x the amount of resources but you get 6x more of the end product. so for example if you were to craft narcotic, it'd take 4 spoiled meat and 20 narcoberries for 6 narcotics.

I'm down 2 of my 3 argys, a ptera, my otter and with all my shit in the swamp, my doedi got eaten as I took away the last argy from home which was the only thing left defending the base, and now even that is gliding all over the swamp as my shit is stuck in the water, no idea how I'm getting out of this any quicker than taming a new random argy and hoping my actual one or my stuff in the swamp is not lost in the mean time, then maybe try to xbow tranq the bary from the rocks until it flees while I try to save what I can.
