The easieste thing to do is to keep the mother at 0 mutations and let the dads be the only one that mutates

I lost my level 52? dilo to a level 33 bronto that I was trying to tame with tranq arrows and every weapon I could get my hands on. I'm a new player (just a few days of gameplay) and I had no idea how much it would take to tame a bronto, but I was determined. After my dilo's death, my outdoor chests being smashed, dying more times than I could count, and taking 45+ minute breaks to pick berries to make more tranq arrows I finally got my Lucy after about 3ish hours?
