Usually its either from one parent or both of them, but if you dont have much color variation it might be because the dino doesnt have as large as a color pallet as maybe a compy or trike.

I think it's something like you need four or five for the maximum level scan that it used to give with one

Nope. Just collect a ton of fish with baskets, go to your shadowmane and wait for day time. After 7am they’ll start to nap, at which point you sneak up feed them and sneak away. Repeat until tamed.
