i prefer them as abhumans personally. gives some fun speculation about the golden age, like you had planets that worked out gene modification to the degree they could turn themselves into their fursonas, only for their vanity to bite them in the ass later and have their progeny become 2nd class citizens at best. fantasy's beastmen don't work in a sci-fi setting since they're effectively anti-technology, they're the purest worldly embodiment of chaos and any sign of civilization is anathema to them (dunno if this still applies to AoS) so space ships are a no-no

but a beastman class would go super hard in darktide. said it before, but it's exactly the type of person you'd find in an inquisitor's retinue

rare, exotic, specialized, fits like a glove both aesthetically and functionally

(at least among radical inquisitors since the more traditional ones don't even consider them human)

Im still working on his lore so I wanna share some data about 40k Gabriel to see if I can improve some things

He was born during the fall of Cadia as the son of a commissar and a guardsman now turned psyker

He has killed 10 heretic astartes (one of them was during his whiteshield days) and destroyed a dreadnought with the help of his team

Despite not being blood related he considers Kate her little sister

He was present during the recidious campaign (SM2) alongside Kate and was nearly killed by a sniper

He was part of a regiment known as the Cadian 99th but got transferred to the 8th and after the recidious campaign an inquisitor took him alongside Kate

He is 19yo (or that’s what he believes because warp shit)

His loadout is a hellgun with a gl, a plasma pistol, a chainsword and has also a combat knife stored in one of his pauldrons

Question for artists in here: how do you guys start with the baseline sketch for an OC? I always kinda struggle with the posing and what sort of shapes I should be using for my characters though I admit Im not all that experienced at it at all

Well the first step is to figure out what you want your OC to be
Is it a man or a woman, what's their job or personality, etc, and from there you can gauge their body language and what sort of attire befits their character

From there you can visualize the pose, the silhouette, and so on

Personality wise and such, I got that down; this definitely is just an issue of practice and probably using a proper pose reference, but I seem to always have the sketch pose just be a bit awkward

Pose is just to be "Man with hands in coat pockets looking neutrally out"

I highly recommend tracing reference photos to get the hang of what goes where in whatever perspective

Krak grenades are anti tank/anti armor. against personel they are... usable. but a direct hit will obliterate the whole body. if you wanna have justification for an arm, it has to hit somthing he is holding. maybe a turret or a door or somthing.

frag grenades are wider radius, and enough shrapenel will do enough damage to render the whole arm totaled, to the point augmentation is necessary. its easier to justify from a story perspective.

plasma gun overloads typically function to just emergency vent a ton of heat into the nearby area. unfortunately, the user is usually in the nearby area. this can kill or badly injure a normal person, and an astartes could be fine with their power armor.

tbf what a krak does depends a lot on how close it was to the target, if the krak stuck to a chimera he was standing next to and exploded... well depending on how close is close he might not even feel the krak, could still loose an arm from the chunks of chimera flying around though
