There actually were, in origin the max they managed to achieve was to get a foothold on cadia, it was later retconnected in cadia falling

The first iteration of 13th black crusade was that chaos managed to get a foothold on cadia and managed to slip past it in great numbers, but cadia was still in one piece and hardly fought on, like half planet was imperial, half was chaos...
Then GW retconnected it all in chaos simply destroying the planet, sacrificing one of their most strong assets

That Abbadons first 12 black crusades were all targeting planets that had Blackstone pylons like Cadia (while absolutely no one noticed until Cawl came around) was totally something retroactively inserted into the continuity of the narrative. I don't know of a more blatant retcon than that.

Half and half might be fair, but 'foothold' is really misleading.
