The ogryn looked as if he opened his mouth to say something but ultimately decided against it. Kaz said nothing. Even in the hangar and the entrance to the Mourningstar, he was silent. Uncharacteristically so. Ulgo’s look of concern only deepened. They traveled through the door to the main hub. The arrays and familiar whirrs of servo-skulls greeted them. He cared for none of it. He was stomping his way to the Shrine of the Omnissiah when he brushed past a guard, checking him with his shoulder guard.
“Oy! Wotchit you stupid karker!”
He turned around. Slowly. Unnoticeable by the guard, his fists tightened.
“Watch where you’re going, eh? Wouldn’t want a… mistake to happen.”
A flash in his mind. The forests. The jungles of Catachan. His mates.
He snapped.
Ulgo was frozen to the spot, watching, as Kaz went madder than a crazed Carnosaur off twelve injections of Slaught. He gave a primal shout- no, a scream, as he seized the guard by the collar of his uniform and rammed his head into his helm, destroying the respirator attached to it, denting and rending it beyond repair. With one hand he ripped the guard’s helm off. With another he drove blow after blow into his soft face. It was almost beckoning to him. Asking to be violated. Kaz drove the guard into the wall and threw him to the ground, continuing to pummel him senselessly. Sanguine blood coated his clenched fist. It looked as if he had a Daemon in his eye. Ulgo snapped out of his stupor and grabbed Kaz with both his meaty hands. It took even a good bit his mighty strength to pry Kaz away from the helpless guard. By that time, a whole crowd had amassed. Kaz was trembling with rage, still swinging at the air.

Kaz and his unit had been beating back a T’au assault on their home planet Catachan for many solar days. A lieutenant sent a small unit consisting of Kaz, his Sarge and a couple of his mates out on a mission. On their way back to camp, however, a Hammerhead flew overhead. Having been walking in formation, they begun to scramble already. Just seconds too late. A blast from an ion cannon hit right where they had been walking. Two were injured. Sarge was stunned. Kaz was flung further from the others, stunned as well. He was able to get up when he felt a tendril wrap around his leg. Too fast. He was sluggish. Another wrapped around his mouth before he could shout. His world was thrown upside down as he was pulled into the air by the legs. Arms bound. Then a tendril around his throat. Contracting. He struggled. Anger replaced his panic. Even as his vision begun to fade.
A crack. The tendrils holding him had been severed. He fell to the ground, unharmed but still slightly stunned as he regained his breath, gasping. He got to his feet yet again in a flash. The sight that greeted him, his savior, was not what he expected.
A T’au. Holding a pulse rifle.
He went for his weapon and found that both his sword and his gun had been jostled out of their places. Gone. He balled his fists.
“Stop!” The t’au shouted. In his language. Now that did make him stop.
“Down!”
He flopped. She lifted her pulse rifle and fired again at the plant, killing it with a screech. Its tendrils went limp.
She stood over bewildered Kaz, offering a four-digit hand.
“What the fragging Hel?!”
“Me deserter. Want to join you.” Now that he was seeing clearer, the sigil of the T’au empire was scratched out everywhere on her armor. Even on her rifle.
He eyed her very suspiciously. Getting up on his own, she picked up his Devil’s Claw sword and presented it to him with both her alien hands. Smiling.
He did not like this one bit. A T’au deserter. But… she saved his life. He owed her.
