thank you, I always try to get the proportions of everything in correct scaling and posing when doing big works such as this, for shading I go for giving everything a correct texture like wrinkles for cloth and shininess for metal while also stylizing it by making the darks very dark to contrast the lighter areas

It depends on the character. Dave is meant to be ur average every day guardsman so his name fits him. But if u have a character that's more unique say an officer, rogue trader, Inquisitor, etc, then a more unique/older name works better.

If you're on the commodore cosmetic preview then I recommend you try to use view all cosmetics mod as the commodore store puts a giant light bulb over the character in preview which fucks up the colors for drawing, to me it looks like dark grey with a tinge of teal

Probably the color then, I usually use like green for sketching or any color, also if your sketches are this detailed you should try just to lineart from the start, you'd be saving a lot of time

My recommendation would be a simple posing phase first (just shapes of the characters proportions) then slowly trying to lineart to get a hang of it, I'm also still experimenting with this approach which is proving time saving but I do go back sketching the actual full character if he/she proves to be more difficult to work with

Like the usual, I'm adding some fun facts because it's fun to talk about imaginary people with crippling anxiety.

• Pol suffers from a terrible impostor syndrome, having climbed the chain of command in barely 2 years due to dying officers, and is convinced he's made it this far just out of luck. Funnily enough, this made him an over-achiever and the best commander in the field during the Gallan Prime Rebellion.
• He's lowkey scared of space marines since an encounter with a traitor astartes that almost killed him. Doesn't tell the story to avoid funny looks from the inquisition.
• Used to be creeped out by the entire Adeptus Mechanicus before meeting Enginseer Aliexandra Morgana. Now he's only creeped out by Most of the Adeptus Mechanicus.
• Potato fries are his comfort food and he will actively partake in contraband to have some, Commissar or not.

I love this!! Those are little facts like this that makes a character so much more lovable. Dude has seen a lot and it shows, especially with his appearance evolving on the 2nd drawing. It'd be my guess. They'd absolutely NOT be something the guard itself makes, but potatoes are such a simple yet dependable plants It seems sensible at least a version of it can be found on planets with at least some farming.
Much like recaf being a general term of anyone's version of coffee or amasec for alcohol, I can perfectly imagine colonized planets having their version of "big edible roots fried in oil", with varying degrees of success.

It is a fair doubt with Terra being an ruined mess of a planet and so many plants and animals being extinct, but of all things I have no doubts you'd have a local version of potatoes, or equivalents, anywhere close enough to an agri-world.
...Then the Imperium will do as the imperium does and you'll probably have a planet that only farms poison ivy to eat and uses potatoes to power servitors, but that's another problem.
