When I got into 40k I got into it by darktide, then I read entire wiki's before I got my first chapter codex and then got more into 30k lol
I think its a great introduction into the wider lore, tho of course you need to have the will to go above and beyond for sources and actually getting to know the shit you want better.
It's a really overwhelming story, but just because it's big, cuz at least to me it's not that complicated at all.
