- fantastic work
- it makes me so mad they don't have a one handed aiming arm in that kit
I WANT THE GUN AND SHIELD COMBO aaa
Thank you! The kit does have just the single one-handed pistol arm on the leashmaster model.
Real example
I swear to god I went over the sprue for like 45 minutes looking for an arm like that and missed it lmao
Might be awkward to get it pointing forward though
Yea the pistol wrist of leashmaster and medpack wrist of chirurgant share the same arm so I can see why it's easy to miss
I just built it, but its a bit frustrating the pose of the arm. I think I might stick with the subductor mace (Im kitbashing all my darktide characters as models)
hehe "stick" with it
It would probably take a lot of greenstuff work or digging through arms to find an arm that can have a more straight pointing shape
I'm really surprised they didnt do a sculpt of the gun braced against the shield
bracing guns against shields looks cool imo
"this hole was made for me" type fit
we also got uhh blooded trench sweeper
I actually have that arm maybe Ill see if I can put the shotpistol on it
it's nowhere enar as bad on the actual model himself, i think it's the lighting making the gold bits look way more protruded than they are
Mandrakes are ready
Gifts of Tzeench
facts....
Sweet ultramarines
no, this is blood agnels
That's the dark angels dude
Nah those are grey knights dude
I assure you the bulldog original moisturiser is absolutely necessary for painting
I'm looking to paint my Arbites kill team in the red armour scheme from Darktide, anyone got a recommendation for a matching red paint? I prefer Vallejo, but will use more or less anything
Thankyou!
Try a dark brown undercoat before you do the red if you havent started yet
Red coverage can be a ball ache for sure, thanks for the tip!
Burnt umber wash complete
Genuine question, have you thought about a brown recess wash for the red shoulder?
Yep that’ll be the next thing I do
Then some highlights
Oh perfect, carry on then
I’m just lazy and do swords silver
I just like the bright blue contrast against the dark gold
I did my bladeguard vets with the blue style and it ended up looking nice
What I really need to do is learn how to do lighting effects on the blade well
Valid
Vallejo red from the model colour range is that kinda red, a little dark less orange
Found the pro settings
I wanna do a lava base but I gotta figure that out so he remains on the unpainted battlegrounds for now
Nice! I love how you did the head!
Thanks!
Maybe edge highlight the spear with white would look cool
ik its still a wip cause the base isnt done hehe
get pyrrole red from am artist brand, its better than any hobby red by a long shot. The artist stuff can one coat black, proacryls needs like 4 coats because its under pigmented
Most brands use Naphthol pigments which are cheap
pyrrole is not cheap so they dont use it
Touch chunky but it's nice
Can go over with a purple wash too if I'm not happy
Minus the base (you're gonna have to give me a bit) I think I'm happy with him
Oh yea, the back came out really nice.
I didn't realize he has a tyranid arm that's so cool.
Honestly he was a really intimidating model for me because he's so cool but I'm pleased
(my celestine is half painted because every time I got to a step I wanted to practice something on another model)
I know you can strip models but its such a pain
Trying to come up with a cool configuration for a Sons of Horus legion champion and think I'm pretty close
Love it!
Are they really making a hello kitty mini?
The Ultrameowines have officially landed, as a hobbyist turned the unreleased 40k Marneus Calgar into a full Hello Kitty Space Marine, pink armor and all.
Nvm
That"d be awesome
Giving us yet more ultraslop
Chairon just f*cking died ig 💔

F...
how did they fuck up his hair color in that art
Cos like some time has past since space marine in lore, he’s older now.
I have no idea why painting these things is so difficult
Should I get these 6 guys? For 360$?
The GW model curse
The only time the did titus' head right was when it wasn't even titus
im talking about this
which ends up double dumb since the mini painter got it right
he just felt like dyeing his hair for that portrait day
a warp particle hit the lens as it was being taken
Dyed hair
idk what to say but he isnt talking about titus
titus is an angel gorgeous in everyway
Bought a box of dire avengers for my kill team
These models
Fucking
Suck
They're the worst thing I've ever had to build and painting them is going to be a massive pain in the ass
They were the highlight of reveals for me
(Even over my own factions new ork hunter reveal)
The colour scheme is awesome
Same problem different person
"we need you to draw gadriel, he's Asian"
"Ok here's an Asian space marine"
"his hair is black because he's Asian"
I don't even think they got the eyes to be similar colors
Big fan of the sky lantern dumpling table
What set is this from?
The old world Grand Cathay Sky Lantern
One of my favourite models
did you buy a sky lantern??
damn thats so cool
Its so huge!
Are you going to build a cathay army? Or just a one off project
Just a one off
well its a good choice
😄
Oh 100% I've been a fan of this one for months. The rest of the Cathay is alright in comparison but the sky lantern is so rad
Had my rejects out and figured I'd take a group photo :D
...Not entirely sure if this constitutes as something that should be in #darktide-fan-art instead or not
Some further modifications
I’ll be down with Dark Angels and Marines Malevolent, however chaos can be very drippy
I'd love to do some iron warriors eventually
Their Dieselpunk aesthetic goes hard as hell
I love them for that, and the Night Lords too cause of their overtly edgy grimdarkness which is cheesy but eh it’s Warhammer it gets a pass
I saw this the other day at a pop-up museum in Osaka, I don't care for Mecha stuff but it's cool to see how they enjoy their hobbies in Japan, all of the Warhammer stores here have a ton of like local submissions for the cases too, it's really interesting.
Is this a custom model?
Never seen an eviscerator model before
It's just a kitbash
Most of them are
There's another guy with an eviscerator there
Though it's kinda hard to see from this angle actually
This guy
In these cases both were made by cutting up two chainswords and putting them together
But there's at least two kits that come with eviscirators for regular humans
Repentia and the Inquisitorial agents
have any of yall done a list with 9 Dreadnoughts? 3 Brutalis, 3 Ballistus, 3 Redemptors?
Its at least a little better this time around, but I still just see the flaws
Squint at it and it looks fine, the closer you look at something the worse it looks
Omg I can't believe how bad this transition looks at 20x zoom
You are allowed to be your biggest hater but sometimes self introspection can be too harsh
I remembered why all my minis wear helmets now
Big boy
How tall is that?
Around 38cm with the stand and 30 cm without it
+googolplex social credit
Big plasma? Is this some kind of conversion of Laz-Cannon?!
i just tore off a sentinel plasma cannon and gave it to a heavy weapon team
Very cool... and thanks to you, I've become a little more courageous in terms of conversions...
and also a very cool camouflage suit on chimeras
Armor on this one looks pretty good but I CANNOT paint faces to save my life

Scawy Aah
Really dialed the armor in
That's what Ive BEEN saying
Man I wish I knew what Kill Team was when I built my Combat Patrols Pathfinders, it mentions NOWHERE that that box comes with the sprue to build the Pathfinder Kill Team so I just didn't know what to do with it
Y'know, I think I did pretty good this time
oh it does? neat
Use it for kitbashing
A lot of my work uses kitbashing
Or magnets
That statue is beautiful. A work of art pal.
Ty was a commission for someone
Wanted terrain to bring w his armies
@cold venture
Part of a bigger group go work I’ve been doing
btw, If anyone is struggling to get the new kill team box, only 3 boxes were sent to each store
Well done, I like this one!
some marineslop while i wait for mordheim material to come in
do grey knights have reivers within their ranks?
They do not
first guy is a drukhari fighting pit champion and the second guy...
my sweet innocent emile
are there any chapters besides gk that do not include them into their ranks?
GK aren't a proper chapter to begin with but there are probably some chapters that haven't taken any primaris forces yet
Black Templars probably
This is my cat walking on the keyboard while I was gone XD
im still in 9th edition.
my group plays always narrative but point values
i have an idea for a new campaign army:
Tank Commander
Cadian Castellan
2x Leman Russ
3x Chimera
3x Infantry Squad
that should be around 1000 points to start on.
its more fun and fluff and of course not a tournament army. But i feel this army feels nice like a combined military platoon with tank sand permanently attached support by grenadiers
later on i will att 2 hellhounds and 1 basilisk for additional armor
i will need to see about other infantry additions because they should be mechanised to stick to the theme
If you’re aiming for a mechanised infantry company then I might suggest a pair of Kasrkin squads with their own chimera each as shock troops, then might be worth considering a platoon of up to 3 russ and maybe a rogal for breakthrough operations
Trying my hand at some actually readable text
Are custodes a good beginner army?
Cheap
Id pick death guard its a good army
Or black legion
Huge hate to the imperium but this is 🔥🔥🔥
Krieg is very cool
seeing as the combat patrol box basically gives you everything you need for a good core army, and they're very forgiving to learn to play with, I'd say yeah
Thank you
I need help yall

I get paid Friday, which of these guys should i get?
i can only do 2-3
I think after I paint my last 3 scorpions I'll take a break, this will be my 10th painted team in 3 months 💀
Finally finished the Leviathan Terminators
Custodes was the army I started the tabletop with, yes they’re very good to start with. Nothing about them is particularly complicated, they’re very good at 1,000 point or combat patrol level games because even the cheapest point Custodes unit is a 3 wound monster in melee
If you’re playing against people who are also new to the game, you’re going to win a lot, Custodes are super strong in low skill games
Because they’re basically just stat checks
I did find that eventually I wanted to move onto other things because they can get a bit boring after you’ve played them a lot
The biggest issue with them is lack of model range
Two of their most common units are nearly identical
The guards and wardens?
Yep
also another issue, vehicles
anti tank in general
all of your tanks are forge world only
so get ready to spend a fortune
or get one 3d printed
Im painting minis in Strike Party 1
Is it required to get tanks / vehicles? I was thinking of doing a 1000 point army to start which would allow me to only have to buy a custodian guard box and a combat patrol.
you can get away with no vehicles in a 1k army
you just need to make sure you're using your blade champion well
he's an absolute force of nature if you can get him where he needs to be
hitting on 2s, 5 attacks, -3 AP, 3 damage
the sword confuses people a bit
the different names are just stances
you decide which one to use when you attack
he can have lone operative as well
so the enemy has to be within 12" to hit
Or you can put superior creation on him
enemy killed him? okay now he's back again with all his wounds
Thoughts so far? I feel like I fucked up on the highlights
Highlights look fine. Yellow might need another coat though? Not sure how pronounced you want it
What is your goal for this killteam? To get er done or are you targeting a technique/skill? The highlights on the helmet could be a little softer I think
Oh yeah this is just the base
Yeah I went back with the previous glaze color and kinda smoothed or back out
I like that alot better
Lots of little cervices on eldar, very good brushwork practice models
Sadly it's just the lighting
Because under light like this it looks like garbage
You and I have very different views of "garbage"
Like this lighting is fine but if I put it under any actual light it looks shitty
You don't want to be painting for it to look good under a harsh light, the white light you have in the previous picture is too close and too harsh
it's perfectly fine with the more natural light
even if it's a tad bit warm in tone
How does this list look?
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
- FACTION KEYWORD: Imperium - Adeptus Custodes
- DETACHMENT: Lions of the Emperor (Against All Odds)
- TOTAL ARMY POINTS: 1000pts
- WARLORD: Char1: Blade Champion
- ENHANCEMENT:
- NUMBER OF UNITS: 6
- SECONDARY: - Assassination: 2 Characters
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Char1: 1x Blade Champion (120 pts): Warlord, Vaultswords
Char2: 1x Shield-Captain (120 pts): Guardian Spear
4x Custodian Guard (160 pts): 4 with Guardian Spear
4x Custodian Guard (160 pts): 4 with Guardian Spear
3x Allarus Custodians (180 pts): 3 with Balistus grenade launcher, Guardian Spear
5x Custodian Wardens (260 pts): 5 with Guardian Spear
Why lions?
not a criticism, but what are you hoping to use lions for?
you're picking a detachment rule that only effects one unit in your army, which only has 3 models in it
imo Shield Host is a much better general detachment, especially if you're new to the tabletop
It just makes your melee weapons better, and makes your guys tougher
Also think about objectives and stuff
most 40k games are going to come down to objectives, not just killing stuff
with Shield Host, you can sticky and objective
which is super useful
Probably the best I'm gonna get on this boy :/
It looks awesome!
Thank you, in all honesty I was looking up what good detachments were and Lions sounded good for the rolls and stuff, but it makes sense to use one that isn't reliant on your other units being too far away
Lions can be very good, but only if you're running more allarus and going heavy on enhancements for characters. For lions you'd want to take a allarus shield captain, rather than just a normal captain
give him enhancements
I see
You can be an absolute menace with it
deep strike some allarus, then unleash the lions
go and murder a bunch of stuff
then use "from golden light"
each of them are now seperate units and use it individually
then you can deploy them again as seperate units later
Interesting, I'll have to look into this
yeah it's an aggressive playstyle
you have to be pretty confident in what you're doing to get utility out of it
So probably best to stay away from it as a beginner
So that list with shield host looks okay?
That's nice!
@dull apex Thank you for the help!
Any other tips for custodes?
What's the best ranged custodes detachment?
I see!
So, your goal is to close the gap as fast as possible and start swinging melee?
But also capture objectives
that is one Striking scorpion
ya
Sounds fun!
Should a build the minis and then paint? Or should I paint them and then put them together?
Build then paint however you can also sub assemble them (leave heads seperate to paint on their own for example) if you want
However you do generally want the majority of the model together
That makes sense, thank you 😊
If you ever have a model with a cape, paint that separately
And yeah heads as well
With capes it’s very hard to paint the inside when it’s attached
Or just fuck it we ball and glue the head on lol
Even though nobody can see it, you’ll know it’s there
And it will drive you insane
At least it does for me
Prime properly and thin your paints!!!!
If you’re buying retributor gold spray, shake it for 4 minutes!!!!
Keep it warm before spraying!!!!
It’s a very easy spray to mess up
There’s so many “why does my gold spray look bad” posts online
And it’s people just not using it properly
Not spraying everything the same colour hah! Look at this "advanced painting"
I only spray things in grey seer
(This is a joke)
Now I'm jealous
It’s a peaceful life
No matter what primer you buy buy a pot of that primer colour too
I'm thinking of using Montana Black gold chrome, as it ends up looking like actual polished gold when it's finished. I'll be running trials to make sure I don't fuck up a model with it tho
Isn't it a spray paint
Yes, you can use it for minis though, it still works
But you’ll need to wait at least a day for it to dry
And don’t touch the minis at all during that time
Because it’ll fingerprint
The problem with very very reflective paints like that is because of how light hits the model
It’ll get rid of the detail
Oh, I see, could you do a black wash afterwards?
I'm assuming that would ruin the shine
Yeah
get rid of mold lines too if you care for it 🙂
There are some good gold paints out there
Retributor gold with reikland flesh shade on it is always solid
I've also seen people use silver ink and a brown / orange wash
I’ve been experimenting a bit with scale75 necro gold
If you want something a bit darker
Looks good
What color wash are you gonna do? Black?
Cool!
I’ve still got plenty to do
But if you want a more gritty gold
Necro is good
I have an old pic of one of my Custodes around
The first minis I ever painted
That’s Retributor gold with a slightly heavy silver dry brush
Then reikland on top
I gave them a bit of a worn look
Looks good!
Sorry I meant to have an exclamation point lmao
I think the silver peaking through looks awesome!
That was the whole gang
Is there a catalog of different color schemes for each army?
But it's your plastic
👀😳 I'll have to take a look
Aquilan Shields look cool
They go for purple instead of red
Their job is to go out and make sure people who’ve been prophesied to do something important are safe
The shadowkeepers look cool
Not 40k, but instead...a better Warhammer system
(it's vermintides setting so I'm allowed to say that)
@dull apex Is the maximum amount of points I can get from a single Custodian Guard box 280? Or am I missing another conversion or addition I can make with just the pieces in the box? (280 is with a unit of 4 custodes and a shield captain)
Yep that’s the max
The current combat patrol for Custodes is exceptionally good
If you’re looking for best value for money
I’d recommend some sisters of silence as well
Just to keep on your home objective
You don’t want to be wasting Custodes by having them just sit at home
Cheers, those were ages ago now
Much more money has been spent since then
I’m currently waiting on a bunch of aftermarket parts to finish off a 1K blood angels army
What's the max on a sister's of silence box? Because the combat patrol is 760, can I get 240 from a sisters of silence?
Remember your enhancements as well
Those cost points
Put them on your shield captain and blade Champion
That’s another 50+
You also don’t need to be dead on 1K either
If you’re doing a 1K army
It’s up to 1K
You’re basically always going to be a little bit off
Hoping to get these 4
black templars have done the primaris conversion? do they use reivers and hellblasters?
I believe all of the chapters have primaris now
do you need perms to post pictures here?
Yeah just talk until your name is red
oh
Yes they use everything except librarians.
librarians are cool
Any recommendations for brush on primers?
autoborne or golden, I tested a bunch and those were the only two that didnt leave horrible streaks
vallejo didnt leave horrible streaks but if the film became damaged at all the entire primer would peal off
proacryl had issues adhering to bare plastic
I’ve never heard of both of these, could you send pics of the bottle so I know what to get?
Thank you so much
Golden is a fantastic paint btw, if youre interested in mixinng your own colors at any point thats the paint to buy. Its hard to beat them
They are the leaders in fine art acrylics for a reason
I'm very new to painting, got myself an airbrush
I think I did really well! But then my paint markers were runny/thick and ruined the teal/brass parts
I probably should've sanded the mold lines, but oh well
This is an excellent work, especially for someone new to painting. If you have an airbrush, I’d recommend trying out some shading on some of your other models
Use a darker version of your primary base colour and spray the model from below
Use a wash over the top as well to really add some depth
They are shaded, its just hard to tell
If it was in person, it would be far more noticeable
Yeah home cameras especially are really bad for actually showing what stuff looks like
They were actually darker in person than I expected
My blood angels come across not so great on camera
You might be able to see it in this video. They're under direct light from my airbrush booth as well
Ah yep that’s much better
Yeah they’re very clean
My custom chapter master Zenithal'ed
You chose the best mk of helmet as well
If you know Calgars model, you'll see I made A LOT of modifications
Beaky helmets every time
I use the Primaris Mk7-8 helmet, beakie and a couple Mk10 helmets
Are you keeping them very clean or are you doing a bit of a dirty wash over the top?
Gonna keep them clean I reckon, cuz I plan on doing blood splatters on them
Still gotta do the details on the beakie, like the under suit n such too
Ooo I’ll keep that in mind! I have been wanting to do a light green silver color and haven’t found a paint I liked yet
While this is my yellow, Golden soflat bismuth yellow performs the same its like $20 for a small bottle of it due to the high material cost of bismuth
its however completely worth it if you want a good opaque yellow thats also not toxic like cadmium
Oooooo
WIP
Thousand sons my beloved
He even painted a thousand of them
I painted 3 rubrics, found out I ONLY needed 3 rubrics then threw the rest in the junk drawer
You're a machine!
Which is your favorite @mint dove from the challenge?
I know you are talking about taking a break from painting for a bit but you should do some terrain too
Chimera chassis my beloved
Hey, how big are the Iron Jaws compared to 40K Orks?
Proper nobz in mega armour them, or nobz at the smallest
Probably the warpcoven
Thanks, been wanting to kitbash a warboss that looks similar to Grimskull or Gorgutz
Might want to pick up a megaboss for that?
@sick ledge is it worth it to buy golden matte medium? Or is matte medium one of those products where it's gonna be a negligible difference from brand to brand
golden is very high quality but its leaner than other brands when it comes to additivees
I personally use both golden and liquitex
I'll give them a go, I heard they're better for making glazes than using straight water because the medium extends the paint without diluting the pigment or weakening the binder
thats partially bullshit
adding medium will dilute the pigment
I have a wash medium recipe btw
Oh do share
You didn’t get 200,000,000m studs yet
Transfers done
yellow
Red (goes fasta)
Purple
Purple
Man, I don't play orks but I was kind of sad they nerfed the oops all boyz detachment
I got stomped by it 3 times but it was always such a blast to play against
there was a guy at my store who combined his orks with his friends orks so he could field just a massive amount of boyz
it really felt like fighting off a huge horde
it was cool to because the painboyz(? I think thats what they were) are really strong in a huge unit.
Scale75 necro gold
With Windsor and newton burnt umber oil paint as a wash
With no oil wash it looks like this
put it back on
Yeah the wash makes it look way better
I just picked up some retributor gold, can I make it look anything like that?
Retributor gold with reikland flesh shade on top basically always looks good
It won’t look exactly like what I’ve done there
The more wash you put on
The more “dirty” it gets
Necro gold is supposed to be a very dark gold
Whereas Retributor is supposed to be a more warm gold
if you just had a brown and just lightly drybrushed gold onto that you might get something similar
🤷♂️
If you can get some necro gold though I do recommend it
Very highly
It’s a bit of a pain to buy physically for me, I had to order it online
It goes on very easy though, from a normal brush and an airbrush
Once you’ve been painting for a while you’ll end up slowly replacing citadel stuff
Because you’ll want to do things a bit different than how GW recommends
Retributor gold is still a very good gold paint
Especially for Custodes
When that new Vallejo metal stuff comes out I want try doing Custodes with that
God I’m so excited for those paints
Ive rebased the Mortars and the Command squad is finally finished!
Would auric armour be the closest paint do this one?
Ahhhh okay
To clarify this is Scale75 Dwarven gold
Thank you for the information :)
Auric is for highlights, don’t use it as a base coat
Do a base coat of Retributor
Then you can do auric on top if you like
Ah I see
In this picture they used charred brown by vallejo underneath
and then they do a dark wash on top of that gold
It's from this guide
https://www.goonhammer.com/how-to-paint-everything-adeptus-custodes-shadowkeepers/
Yeah it’s because Retributor on top of a black primer is very annoying to paint
If you’re doing just normal all gold Custodes you can prime with Retributor spray which makes things a lot easier
I'm gonna go out tomorrow and get some Rhinox Hide because they're all out of Charred Brown where I am
Love Rhinox hide
honestly one of my favourite paints
has a really nice subtle kinda purple to it at times
once you paint for a long time you start replacing all your hobby paints for stuff thats higher quality as a whole and for more control.
And then you start airbrushing 😈
and then you start oil painting with lead white
Delicious……

Battleforce price tags for everyone
Crazy story at the grand narrative this year:
I faced World Eaters four separate times-From the moment I first deployed my forces on Catachan, they hounded me. Finally, their forces cornered my own on the world of Sanctus.
They were aggressive, and fierce in close quarters-a perfect counter for the urban warfare-focused guardsmen of the Hexian 21st Hellions. (They had a lot of scout moves, we had a lot, so by halfway through turn one we were all standing pretty much right next to each other in the middle of the field). Forced in the thick of it with the Chaos marines, and unable to destroy them at range, we were left with one choice: Charge first.
With a brief thought towards our faction priorities (kill enemy leadership), a unit of kasrkin disembarked and engaged a chaos lord riding a juggernaut, first with arms, then charging him, finally killing the chaos lord with a ramming attack from the wheeled chimera that disembarked the guardsmen.
For my other squad, a worse fate was in store. A demon prince of Khorne, swollen with the power of Chaos (and quite lovingly kitbashed, I might add-There's a reason he won best display board this year) assaulted the unit of kasrkin escorting my own warlord, a castellan. It slew them in an instant, killing ten men in a single fight phase, with only the castellan to survive, wounded at that.
The impossible happened: he drew his power sword, and engaged the Khornate beast. Remarkably, the castellan, engaging in melee combat with one of the most powerful threats on the planet, managed to slay it in single combat. We even called the vox localum (guys who oversee the event in each room in character) over to watch-This was the type of thing that deserved to be recorded.
Anyway, after the battle concluded (I still lost, but my warlord survived to tell the tale), we posed the minis for this picture. My opponent had only seen the mini die twice since he built it, and I was proud to be one of the ones to banish it.
Evil gue vesa to shoot with my good and righteous shadowsword
(I actually really like what you did with this)
Thanks! Another model off my backlog
Truly the greatest model in the Heresy range
He's horusing his heresy for sure
The dead guy is so good lmao
Been wanting to do something like that but never got aroudn to it
Painted this lil heretic last night
And today I touched up my KT's plasma gunner
I need to see how you paint this
I will be checking every day
This might be a long one which will have others done in between
Ole steelhelm head
You don't do glows?
Nah, I was happy with how it looked and i didn't want to risk mucking it up
maybe in the future
The steelhelm actually required a bit of doing to get it to fit in
and it's not 100% snug
Any advice on getting this kinda black armor for my own wrecka krew?
thats dark grey not black Basically a 1 to 1 black and white with a little brown in it
it maybe looks black contrast over grey or white and then with a bristly ass brush lightly drybrushed wear on, kind of like stippling
It looks exactly like that
If not using contrast, try Corvus Black with a drybrush of uhh
leadbelcher?
Started with Maloghurst by airbrushing on the base tones
My first time painting warhammer WIP
This is very good so far, probably 90% of people starting out just cannot stay within the lines, but you’ve kept it pretty clean
It's pretty hard on the hands doing such small detail work
If you don’t have one already, a table mounted magnifying glass makes a night and day difference
Yeah, I've been thinking about getting one, it seems like a really good idea
Time to cook
My Birthday gift
Pretty nice
I would show my traitor guard but cant
I finished some plague ogyrns
Nice
WIP
Beautiful 😍
Time to edge highlight
Yessir!! I also have to do the head
found the 2 i'm gonna get
I'm not sure what else I would do on this one, but I think I might be finished :)
Love to see some Crimson Fists action
He's been on my pile for quite a while
Crimson Fists are one of the many, many armies on my long list of armies I'd like to do eventually. Pedro Kantor is the GOAT, as is Alessio
Any recommendations or constructive criticism is highly encouraged! Should I paint the top portion of the gun a different color?
It seems too clean, closer to a joy toy than a character in the world, obviously there are spots that can be touched up to make it look even cleaner where you missed some spots but it depends on what ur goal for the model is
Well! That's high praise! This is my first mini so I wasn't 100% sure which colors to put where as I was following a guide for custodes and thought I would try my hand at doing the color scheme on a space marine! Thank you for the advice, I'll keep it in mind moving forward
For a first mini you did a good job keeping in the lines for the most part, I've seen a lot worse for first timers
Where were the places that were missed? Also what color would you suggest I paint the top part of the gun (part closer to chest) if you think that it would look better / contrast better with more color
you did great yeah but I'd agree the gun needs to be a different colour. Right now it just blends into teh mdoel
This part should be silver / gunmetal 100%
Metallic on the skull on flamer cannister. Maybe on the piping around it too. The ultramarine symbol is not fully covered on the sides of it
This is very true, I scrapped a bit of the ultramarine logo off on one side trying to remove other paint and completely forgot to add the paint back that I removed
Maybe i go with red like this
Have you thought about doing more edge highlighting like that templar there
highlighting your metals with a whiter metallic
And doing the helmet earpads and tubing in metal as well
I would do more with the helmet, but I feel like my current brush is too big to get as detailed as I would want it, also I haven't thought of outlining my metals in a whiter metallic, thank you for the suggestion :)
i did mean doing a more complete edge highlighting as well, though i guess youve glued him together at this point which makes doing a few of those now a bit hard
how big is your brush by the way
this is excellent, especially since you're new to painting. As others have said, I think the main thing is improving the weapon
Actually! I haven't glued him together yet! So I could go back and do this!!
It doesn't help that painting black space marines well can be quite difficult
I didn't know where the most common edge highlighting spots were so I was just guessing @urban drum
you're basically entirely reliant on highlights
oh, id consider that a reasonably small brush for details
Oh sick! I think I was just scared at messing up the eyes, as I was going to try and do two different layers on them
But yeah, I could probably do the tubing on the head in a gunmetal
I'll try and replicate these lines with my current highlight and I'll report back! Thank you for the recommendations! :)
if you want to sink a bit of time into edge highlighting heres a bit of reading you could do https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UVbfQlxNZE

In this video I will be painting Black Templar armour using the 'Eavy Metal recipe.
The paints I used to do this are: Chaos Black/ Ak 3rd Gen Black, Stegadon Scale Green, Wraithbone, Celestra Grey, AK 3rd Gen White.
White official recipe:
Base – Corax White / White 1:1
Soft Shade (if needed) ...
Warped Factory has some great prints! But 100 USD is a bit much to ship now 😬
New Progress is Heavy Stubber teams coordinator, and rebased the Heavy stubber gunner since the original bases I ordered didnt fit the Hvy team 🥲
Bit more progress
Far worse chapters to be picked lol. The Templars are one of my favorites, although I'm primarily a Dark Angels fan
Magos Dominus !
One day I'll get Cawl......
maybe in the summer when my Primer won't crackle immediastely
Should I put nuln oil on after I highlight? Or before?
Before I would say
The highlights are generally what you do last
Ah I see
Plus it lets you clean up any bits of the wash that you might have gotten on the wrong parts
I.E if you was just doing a recess shade
Makes sense
Ye
So I would do it at this stage, and then highlight afterwards
Yeah, pop the nuln oil on, give it a good bit of time to dry, then you can clean up any parts you’re not happy with afterwards
Then you do the highlights
👍
Nuln + highlight
Mate you’re killing it, very nice work
Throw some reikland flesh shade on the red part of the gun
Is reikland a brown wash?
I'll have to go buy some
I'll start
WOW! Those are awesome!
Thank you! I painted mine as Forge World Deimos
I'm working on some necrons right now
Yep, gives a more sort of dirty and weathered look
Ah I see! I'll have to pick some up
Would Agrax Earthshade create a similar effect?
Yeah that should be fine
technically its dark red that looks brown
All done
Hi, I got a bunch of pictures from a tournament 2 weeks ago in sweden, how do I get a ok to post them? :D
Dang, oke
Once you have the orange name role it'll give you image permissions
you get it by chatting
yeah, good info Jerk o Matic
Ah I see!
Fun to meet the swedish 40k team, and see they are sponsored by fatshark :D
One team who allways comes to the tourney, called go go harambee rangers, they had a awsome army of admech, with a full on cowboy theme
Just ordered my first lil Ork Warband
Any recommendations for spare parts and stuff for base decorations?
Wanted to kinda make swamp ass Orks
With crocodile Squigs
get yourself some beastboyz
I figured the grots would be great to start off painting. Used to do it a few years back but never got fully into it.
Tape the sides up and pour a tiny blob of epoxy to make it look like they are treading water?
That’s actually a phenomenal idea
I’m more worried about the skin texture on the squigs tho
How would I go about getting that nice scale patten
That's abit harder unless you are top with freehand painting
My first idea was using some green stuff and just carving it myself LOL
at least along the spine of all my squigs
Maybe make some scales separated from the model itself and then slap em on the model?
If memory serves me, I think squigs got scales already
theyre more leathery than scaly
Yeah I want them to look more reptilian
I’m talking the thick slabs of scales on crocs
A tau
Holy crap! Bro those lines are crisp 😍
@brisk vapor
Someone told me you're the resident artist in this server.
How would one go about getting those kind of edge highlights done?
Any tool you recommend?
Took you two whole minutes to reply smhmyhead
I presume this is continuation of the tag I got in #40k-lore-chat
but a fine sable brush, probably size 0 or 1, and a lot of practice
use the brush's side, not the tip
What type of model is this? (Like what faction)
Yes, my bad chief.
Gotcha.
No clue. 30k though.
Pre-ordered the Krieg battleforce box. Pretty excited to get started on those.
Ordered Vulkan He'stan aswell to finish up my Salamanders, can't wait for it to arrive so I can finish and move onto the next project
Shoot, it looks sick!
Cheers, here's the finished one🫡
Lovely! It literally looks perfect
Much appreciated
I just started painting minis recently, this is my first model and I was wondering where the areas you think I need the most improvement are
Hm, you've got a good brush control already, not much overlap onto wrong panels and the like, so I'm sure you can manage thinner highlights if you'd want to go for that
I'm not a very good teacher though
He just picks up a model then blacks out for a few hours and suddenly the masterpieces appear
Way better than my first.
yeah pretty much
First model v my most recent
I also found out camera settings are a thing
I hate bases to this day
Ahhh okay, so I'd want to probably go with a thinner brush then
and to continue, you could do a highlight of a darker colour first, closer to the original tone, which can be a bit thicker, then have a more precise highlight with the brighter colour
Looking up tutorials by Duncan will definitely help anyone starting painting
either the old ones on Warhammer youtube channel or the newer ones on TwoThinCoats
Thank you 😊
This was my first or second mini
Fuckin drowned them in Nuln Oil
Mistakes have been made
Is the most recent a dwarf?
Leagues of Votann so basically yes
Space dwarf
Very cool! It's looks amazing
And my most recent mini.
Blasting doom metal during paint sesh with the boys is a vibe btw
Np chief.
Will do! Thank you
Still need to edge highlight 1065 points worth of minis tho. Really looking forward to it.
Edge highlighting an army is a really good way of learning brush control and painting good
Ahh so something like this dude has on his arms?
pretty much how I learned
Good thing I'm doing that before my Krieg battleforce comes in then.
ye exactly, makes the change from base to highlight less sudden
Looking forward to painting astra militarum but it also seems challenging considering the size difference.
Yeah! It makes it look super smooth
This is my current smallest brush, I was wondering what you guys would recommend for a smaller brush to do finer details?
My next mini will be a custodian guard, so I assume I'll need a finer brush
These dudes seem to have so many tiny details
It's more about the tip of it vs the size of the brush itself. A good size 0 or 1 is honestly fine for most details barring like eyes.
@plain granite So, do you think this brush is small enough?
The tip looks a little blunted, does it still come to a fine point?
Yeah, in that pic it looks a little stubby but it does still come to a point if shaped
Then I think it should be fine. Though the thick handle may make getting it into some crevices a pain lol.
Yeah it was a little tough to maneuver
What size would you say that brush is?
0 or 1 I think.
I've got like a 5/0 for eyes, but I just use that for the whites, and then a micron pen for pupils.
Has anyone in here ever used paint pens for edge highlighting? And if so, how did it go?
I haven’t but I know someone who has, they’ve very much like the result and apparently it was very easy, I’ll grab you their image
Wow those look pretty solid!
Looks really nice.
He did say they are much better for vehicles than on infantry
I've also seen a post on IG of some guy using a sillicone toothpick to edge highlight the crevices on vehicles/dreadnoughts
Ima give that a try lol
If I can find a paint pen with a fine enough tip it might be good for normal minis too
That highlight is awsome
Only being able to edge highlights in the pen colour sounds like a deal-breaker for me
The size isn't actually that important, as long as the tip is very sharp it can do any precision work. Very small sizes have the disadvantage of having a tiny belly on them so the paint reservoir will dry up very very quickly, sometimes before even getting the brush from the palette to the model
Yeah, I can see that being an issue
These are my favourites at the moment, sizes 2 and 0
Any particular brand? And are they synthetic?
Natural, kolinsky afaik. These particular ones were from a kickstarter by Mindwork Games, but any kolinsky will usually do
Also: Quite positively surprised how well these metallics turned out and how much they improved the look so far
I can't wait to see what type of wash / shade you put on them to make them look grimy!
(Unless you aren't, which is cool too)
I'll do a very selective oil "wash" at for the final steps. The volumes in the gold are quite good already so I don't want to muddy them up too much
Fair enough! What gold is that?
it's a mix of like 4 or 5 paints 😄
Nice haha
darker areas are a mix of couple browns and black mixed with retributor armour and the lighter areas are either a mix of retributor armour and vallejo metal color gold or just metal color gold
I see
Ooooh lovely bronze!
Presenting my first mini ever, ultrabob of ultramar
Need some advice on color chouce for a paint that matches this horses coat. I was thinking of doing a base of dryad bark, washed with agrax earth shade, then drybrush gorthor brown then baneblade brown but I'm not sure, any advice?
mornfang brown base?
I thought of that but it may be a bit too orange
its basically just raw sienna and white
So tau ochre base
xv-88?
w/e its called
Hmm yeah xv-88 washed with agrax, then layered up with tau light oche and ungor flesh may get me there,
Dont forget the mixer exists, youre smart enough to extrapolate from it
You're right, I'm thinking of maybe mixing in more and more ivory into the xv-88 and dry brushing in smaller and smaller areas
Looking at the coat theres not so much highlights like you do on metal or leather but it's like the fur has an all over sheen
Boys
I think I got the perfect idea for my orks and squigs
I’m thinking a nice red on the Orks, something unusual
And then I want to attempt to paint my squigs black
But from what I’ve read so far I would wanna start with a grey base and then nuln oil? To get the black but to still have some shading
i think thatd get you a dark grey with some shadowy pits
im not sure itd produce black
Kinda the opposite, you'd want to start black and work your way up
That’s legit the opposite of everything I’ve read so far
What black would you recommend then? Should I prime em black?
have you considered black contrast
BLACK LEGION ⚫️ CONTRAST CORNER🖌️
Here’s a look at Black Legion contrast paint by Citadel.
Starting with a zenithal spray (black all over and then white from above) I test how this paint looks on a Tyranid termagant. My thinking being that this could be the basis for a very quick and easy xenomorph scheme!
Not very familiar with how to paint orks. Painted Lizardmen for a short time in HS and haven’t done it in forever
If I wanted something to read as black I'd prime black then add gentle highlights, like my mandrakes, I wanted them to have black skin with a hint of blue so I based in black, and highlighted with dark reaper and black in increasing parts til I got to just pure dark reaper
That black is not as nearly dark as I would like
Do you happen to have pictures of your mandrakes?
I do much better with a visual reference LMAO
well of course you could start at grey as well instead of white like he did
and if you want more recess shade you could hit it with nuln oil
I actually think what he did followed up by a layer or two of nuln oil might be perfect actually
Here's the recipie I used, not my pictures
I want my squigs to be dark black, with a reddish spine
That’s actually really nice!
I think Black legion would work perfectly actually for what I have planned. Follow it up with Nuln oil and maybe some grayish highlights
I’m really not too confident in my color theory so it might look better in my head though LOL
First time painting squigs too so I have no idea what I truly want
I’ll have to sacrifice a squig I suppose. Start testing out the black when my $150 of paint arrives next week
Wait wait wait. Red base with black contrast. Would it come out nice?
I'd believe it would just read as black because the black contrast paint isn't transparent enough for a nice red gradient to show up
Well that was kinda the point
Even if it doesn’t show up the reds I have are pretty damn dark
So it’ll just add to the darker effect, and I can highlight with some lighter reds instead of grays
It would be somewhat the same as just painting with black I reckon. Black contrast on white gives some highlights on raised areas but with a red base I'm not sure if those will show up at all
but it could be worth a try
maybe with a thinned down black contrast
with the medium they sell
Woah I haven’t even messed with medium
I have a bad habit of trying to plan everything out before I even start
I don’t even have my models built yet
But I don’t want my squigs to look like everyone else’s LOL
I’m really hooked on this black and red idea
Oooh wait a minute.
You’ve given me an idea
Pale Orks on Redback spider squigs
Oh my god
literal leadbelchers
YES
thank you fellas for the brainstorming
I found a nice paint scheme for the white orks already
Witness me!!!!
Wraithbone base, and maybe a really diluted mix of Magos and Dreadful visage?
To get that kinda pinkish/purple hue
Possibly? You’re better off asking someone else more familiar to working with whites
On mostly eyes, ears, thinner parts of the skin
Yeah LOL probably
I’m not familiar with painting orks in the slightest so this is brand new to me
Full send it
Already have a sacrificial squig and grot picked out for…. testing purposes.
Just gotta wait the fuckin 2 weeks for shipping
How would you guys recommend priming a head separately? Maybe use blu tack or something?
Glue it on a toothpick.
I use old paint pots and blutack/equivalent
I see! Thank you
My Necromunda Kitbashed Mutant gang using poxwalker, hive scum, and cultist parts
They're fun
i refuse to drill a little hole and mount it to a stick with silly putty to paint faces, so be it
Why waste the perfectly good stick
You already have it connected to something
What would yall highlight black legion with?
Corvus Black mixed with Fenrisian Grey
Oooh I’ll have to try that
Do that and then do a lighter mix with more fenrisian grey for the lighter highlights
My question is how would Black Legion look over a base of like a really dark red?
And if I tried to kinda highlight with a lighter red, how black could I have it without having like 0 shading LOL
I think it would just be black, contrast paints aren't really good over dark colours
but testing it would yield concrete results, I've not really used contrast paints that much as they're "intended" to be used
I mostly use them as glazes to slightly modulate the colours beneath
That’s fair
With me never painting squigs before it’s kind of a toss up on how it’ll come out
I would’ve tested it by now but my paints shipping and gonna take like 2 weeks to arrive..
I just cannot stand half the colors I see squigs painted as, and of course the one color I wanna use I’ve never seen anyone paint on a squig LMAO
Everyone either paints em red, pink, blue, or green
Greens are rather rare as well tbh
there was one GD entry this year that had them green but other than that I've not really seen those
I just wanted mine to stand apart from the rest a lil bit
Legit I’ve seen I think, one black squig?
And it was a Squigosaur
Nobody has painted a small squig black
I like orange and purple squigs when they're in a pack
Such a strange combo but to each their own!
I just thought black and red would match the albino orks better
It's not orange+purple squigs it's, orange squigs mixed with purple squigs in a pack, looks Halloweeny
+1 wounds and +1 OC
He’s not really a separate unique unit
He’s just a guard with extra war gear
Yep
There’s a fair few 3 damage weapons in the game
Which will kill your Custodes in 1 hit
The shield is good because in the case that you really get some terrible rolls
And an attack makes it through
He can tank it
makin everyones favorite slug
She has the high döner
Definitely did not just order $200 worth of models and then $300 in paint…
We’ve all been there
The wait for the package is the worst part man
Is this your first army?
Actually yeah!
I dabbled with some lizardmen back in the day but they were the really cheap shitty models
This is my first actual army. Been interested in the hobby for years and I’ve watched enough videos to entertain an iPad kid
You better thin your paints
If I see you post a picture of non thin paints I’ll go feral

One of the first things I learned LOL
Tbh a lot of it’s just overthinking
I know once I actually get my models and assemble them I’ll be a lot more prepared to paint em
I dont thin my paints ever
pointless to do
in fact I thicken them a lot
King of gaslighting
Not in the slightest actually. I make my own paints
thats the trick
Oh
