Michael Geary called fatalist insecure and, on top of that, I think he's interesting in the way that he actually questions the Lex and challenges those around him. He even gives them words of encouragement when he feels it's... gasp mandated!

Maul is possibly the most severely indoctrinated, but undoubtably the one who suffers the most from it. He seems to want to convince himself that he enjoys what he does and maybe sometimes even does? The encouragements he gives to the others could be interpreted as what he tells himself, which opens up a lot of questions about how actually 'content' he really is
