every weapon has stats, like damage and mobility and ammo count. these can be improved by Empowering the weapon at the mechanic shrine in the hub. the higher your Mastery level with a weapon type is (more time spent playing with it = more mastery), the higher you can Empower it.

perks and blessings slots can be added to the weapon by Consecrating it. these provide damage buffs or additional stats or other effects. the more Mastery you have, the better perks you can put on the weapon with Refine and the better blessings you can put it on it with Rebless. blessings are unlocked with Mastery points in the Mastery tab in your operative menu.

the combination of these systems is what gives you better gear. don't be afraid to look up guides on how to build your weapons or your class. the game is complicated and the ingame information is pretty poorly explained.

just to clarify: ammo crates aren't actually infinite - they have 4 charges. each time you interact with the crate you use 1 charge and fill your ammo to full regardless of how much ammo you're missing, which means if you're missing a single bullet and use the crate you'll still use 1 of the 4 charges

i.e. try to use it when you're low on ammo, and generally speaking you only want to use it once unless you need to spam nades and someone has field improv and/or you're in havoc and need 2 charges to fill your ammo to full
