So long as you arent taking two melee hits back to back you shouldnt take any chip damage since your toughness fills back very quick. Just something you learn with more playtime the faster you clear a horde and get moving the easier a mission tends to be due to less spawns and less chances to take chip damage. Plus circling the horde keeps them together as a group and not trying to flank you
