Honestly I would see the argument in favour of multiple Melta families:
Beam (Melta have some that are basically Heat/Rad Lamps)
and Cone (There are some that are Plasmified/Overheated Promethium venter)

My idea is that the default Melta will take the Beam, while the Inferno Pistol takes the Cone.

YE, but even Melta Pistols are quite rarer than Melta guns, I think having the 2 types (realistically just one tbh, just the Venter-cone) be Meltagun is better

Atm the rarest form of weapons we have are the Deimos Force Swords

Which in fairness would be somewhat rarer than Inferno Pistols, but also less sought after (being only of interest for Psykers)
