A hunch of mine is that ogryns have a reputation of "protecting the lil uns" cause in the "wild" bigger ogryns protect the smaller ones from threats. So they associate the property of being small with their needing to be protected if that makes sense.

Why then they are still capable of attacking lil uns can be explained as them seeing said lil uns as a threat to their own lil uns. Like i have nothing against children but if another child tries to kill my niece or little brother I don't have hang ups about stopping them

Well, we do know that ogryns see humans like that due to the average adult resembling a child ogryn, so that kicks in their parental need to protect by default. I feel like you could write an intermediate idea: a subset of Ogryns encounter tyranids and do their fighting against them and eating them. The parasites within the tyranids integrate themselves into the ogryn hosts, but stop communication with the hivemind when they realize that the ogryns eat FAR more than enough to sustain themselves. So it becomes a weird mutual relationship where the Ogryns get tyranid enhancements in exchange for food and protection.

Is it dumb? Yes. Is it undermining tyranids in a way? Yes. Do I care? Not really.

Another idea for an ogryn faction would be: during the HH, a bunch of ogryns were experimented on in order to make soldiers like space marines, but at a far cheaper cost: this included increasing their intelligence. However, the project is cut short and the ogryns are left to just wander on the planet, where they eventually break out and start rampaging around. Being smarter than a Bone 'ead but still dumber than the average human, they know how to maintain spaceships, but cannot develop beyond them, so they hijack ships and deliberately crash into planets to fight, kill, and eat whatever's on said planet, then do the same thing again when there's nothing left.
