One criticism is although it keeps a mob in place for zealots to kill, it stops the mob from bunching up, which in the case of havoc where ranged can ruin your toughness extremely quickly, it sometimes causes melee players to not be able to reach enough trash to kill to regenerate toughness.
I like smite cause like stun grenades, an Ogryn's bull rush, or Veterans shout or frag grenades, it provides a good pause in fighting in those "oh shit" moments, especially if you use it to lock down a horde when someone else is trying to res someone or a bunch of ragers appeared by surprise.

That said it is very fun using smite as a push/pull tool to yeet enemies off the side of gantries.

lol. could be that there was a quirk in spawning that limited how much stuff could spawn properly, and that back then with the fewer spawns, that limit sufficed for most extraneous conditions.
I did this penance by afking in mortis trials with shieldgryn, then dropping the pineapple on them. Needed a few tries, because melee spawns were topped out at 100 enemies, requiring me to kill specialists and newly-spawned enemies to hit the 120 mark.
