You can pretty much go anything with the new sword. If you want it to be REALLY sword focused, you can go scrier's. But you don't have to if you feel better with other stuff.

Assail or bb+kf. Your choice of ability.

But if you're going scrier's, I recommend DD keystone.

If you're going bubble, I recommend warp charges.

If you can pay attention, there is feathering around the screen when SG (scrier's gaze) and WU (warp unbound are active. That feathering goes away when WU ends; there is also an audio cue. There is also a buff icon that is up while WU is active, BUT buff icons are really inconsistent. Video of all of that here. #psyker-class message

EK/ Surge / electro (non-havoc) RMB (charged / secondary attack)

flak + personal pref (unyielding, maniac, etc)
warp flurry + warp nexus
dump warp resist

Note that unyielding helps with bulwark, reaper, and monster damage and maniac will help with dreg ragers and specials. Elite only really helps with a scab gunner breakpoint. Crit chance is universal, but a +25% damage perk is preferable.

Smite is rarely used but is there for positioning targets into something more favorable or "oh shit" moments (this is not a smite focused build; only has a single point of investment). If you want more damage at the cost of a rarely used CC option, choose BB + KF for blitz.

Take a horde clear melee option to balance out the single target nature of surge/ EK staff; illisi, FGS, devil's claw, etc fill that role and has peril gen that helps fuel shriek spam. Other horde options are fine and don't have to be a force weapon.

Shriek often. 85% peril consistently gets you to max SB (soulblaze) stacks for creeping flames (6 SB that can stack onto other SB). If your ability is consistently available before 5 Warp Charges, feel free to drop Warp Battery. If you are not a KD (kinetic deflection) enjoyer, you don't have to take it.

A core part of staff is quelling or charging / channeling the secondary action (RMB) while sliding. A slide can be performed by sprinting then crouching. Casting then quelling at high peril and maintaining it is know as peril edging.
