If you're playing the game 'normally' (i.e. actually killing your way through and not running past everything) it's not bad but it's nowhere near the best weapon. Even using it as an elite killer doesn't make meta sense because a gun does a much better and quicker job, let alone an elite killer like the revolver.

Really, though, just practice.

Zealout teaches bad habits through using second wind.

Makes you feel tankier than you are because that talent is cracked.

With psyker you always want to be generating peril somehow.

You have plenty of defensive options to keep yourself from getting instantly bursted down by trash.

Smite (🤮), any staff, walls/dome, assail...

Hell, even scriers gaze can be considered defensive if you take the damage resistance node on it.

Constant toughness regen due to peril rising and the aux node make you pretty tough to kill.

In the pins is a general surge staff build. There is also the guide called the Atheneum for reference.

Full charges on surge do more damage.

You can quell while dodge sliding. This lets you reposition and play more aggressively when you want to.

Surge is quite good at dealing with shooters, specials, and smaller elites within 25m.

The charge has CC and can stop a crusher from doing an overhead. The primary/ m1 has a lot of supression.

Lmb spam on surge staff is nothing to sneeze at. You can drop specialists in 2-4 shots if they're well placed.

Surge is good get getting PC procs utilizing psykentic's aura for soulblaze dot and ability spam. Ability is shriek + creeping flames. At 85% peril, use shriek to clear chaff including smaller shooters, bruiser, and even snipers.

This helps a lot with hordes. Take illisi for more horde clear.

Like mentioned, LMB spam shouldn't be overlooked. It can thin a horde that is approaching you, get enemies from faraway, and finish off enemies that didn't die from the charged attack. Play around in the meat grinder and you find that a lot of the man sized priority target need a full surge charge + a partial charge or a hit from the primary / lmb.

Be mindful of your peril management. Surge can be more explode prone compared to other staves. It also lets you keep you head on a swivel.

I know that's a lot. lol

Something of note is KD (kinetic deflection). It can add a lot of survivability.

For Perilous Focus, open areas are your enemies. Places like hallways and choke points are your friend. Take Battle Meditation and Perilous Combustion talents (near the top); of course Scrier's Gaze. You can do it with guns (columnus), staves (void or purg), or melee (illisi or DS). If you can get a horde alone, you're in a good place to try for it. Enemy density is also your friend; this tends to translate to harder difficulties.
