Something I found a while ago is it feels like this because on the Mk III at least if you hit the part of the animation where you just hold the knife still, ready to attack, it has a weird-ass delay to it. The window to swing the knife starts super early, if you swing during that period you don't get the delay.

You can swing the heavies faster than most weapons can swing lights.
