That's what I did. Took a good melee weapon, carefully used up my double barrel ammo, then meleed my way home.

Just keep trying, and make sure you have at least some kind of grenade regen so you can make more tries per run when you are in more open areas of maps, usually during objective events.

A few of the extractions you can chuck your remaining grenades over onrushing hordes too. Increased radius on shredders can help if you are really struggling, but I think I did it without.

Sometimes you use stealth to quickly do the objective, or after you get aggro from the boss and draw it away so your teammates can deal with the horde first

I'd say arguably, a steath vet and a shout vet combined is more effective then two shout vets together

Stealth Vet is all about, looking at the situation and finding out what your team needs. Are you guys being pinned down by a horde with enemy gunners setting up? stealth out of there, take out the gunners, return and help finish the horde

Does your team need supplies? You can skirmish out to the sides with relative safety and ease

Are you clutching? You're safer doing it then a zealot is usually

since you can also roll grenades in stealth without breaking stealth

Yeah I got to 30 in a week and am like +60 or so a few weeks later, almost done all Vet masteries and have "good enough" at least weapons of all types + a set of each curio at max. Now if I could only shoot straight or melee.
