Tbh good. They were getting too big for their own good and they likely recognized it. You're getting too big for hardcore when you have billboards for your releases in times square and are the opening act in arenas for extremely milquetoast bands

Cus at that point does your music and what it's supposed to stand for align with the trajectory of your band?

Hardcore, be it metalcore or punk, is at its roots DIY and anti-capitalist and a band too big can't exactly preach that

respectfully i disagree. they want to make money off their work. I get that. They do more than enough small events and tours, and still keep in touch with their fans. Theyre being invited by bands they look up to to open. I can respect that.

I wanna go into this more and my thinking; punk and hardcore at its roots is 100 percent an anti capitalist and diy movement. However, I feel when bands are able to tour more often and further from home, open for bands they look up to, and quit their day job and do music full time, and bring their friends in smaller bands on tour with them, that shouldn’t be looked at as “selling out”. Especially when they continue to contribute to the diy and anti capitalist roots they come from. Scowl is a band that’s been blowing up, first time I saw them was a free show for people who couldn’t make it to the sold out show they were playing later that day. Second time was for an LA fire benefit show.

Point is: growth as a band is sometimes inevitable. What you do with that growth is up to you. You can be a sell out, or you can do what I think gel and Zulu did

I'm not calling it selling out just making that clear. Selling out is when you sacrifice your sound to be more commercially successful like how code orange did. And I know 100% gel and Zulu ain't about that. They were successful being hardcore. For me it's more of a "I'd rather they leave on a high note before they reach the possibility of that"
