I genuinely suck at it

In terms of regular shading i started off with putting alot of pressure and i ease off as i get away from my starting point. To get a feel. Then you try to mirror it starting light. But if you meant pen shading, its similar but it requires more control of pressure.

I usually get a reference of a shade and try to mimic it.

Hopefully that gave you somewhat an idea how to improve. (Im very bad at explaining lol)

Well, with pen is more like knowing the proper “fill” requirement to blend it off. With patterns etc. (i think its easier to explain through visual tomorrow morning)

heyo! I know you said you're not looking to capture realism but referencing from life really helps layout the foundation for your drawing! if you feel like real-life people are too difficult to simplify into your style try ball-jointed-dolls, I personally used them a lot when doing more exagduatated drawings while still being able to see that D3 figure to help me with the positioning of the features etc. I hope this helped, i think you're off to a great start with already placing in shadows on the face to help create dept and such! ❤️
(I've attached some examples from pintrest, it's a great app for references!)

How do i put the shadows right?

You could try finding a reference of something you're aiming for and work off that. It also looks like the light source is coming from the upper right, you could try adding a bit more darker shade to the shadows you already put down, especially on the face under the hat. Hope that helped! It looks great so far!!

• Not everything can be easily learnt online. Think about arts for example, or science labs (I'm an engineer student so I've got several of these)
• Online, it's way more difficult to ask questions about what you don't understand. IRL, you can just bring your notes to your teacher/lecturer and point the things you have trouble with. To answer and help you visualise, they can even write/draw things on the blackboard. Way more difficult online (especially in maths/science, because there are so many formulas you can't just type into a text editor, or mouse-draw on paint)
• Cheating during tests and exams would increase.
• Health would become a problem, if there was a way for you to spend your entire day sitting without having to get your booty up and go to school.

And mostly social interactions would be dead. Making friends online is nearly impossible. Lectures would be boring without someone next to you whom you can talk to. Loneliness would hit the ceiling. Just think about how most pupils/students disliked or even hated 2020 for that

Yeah some introvert people would certainly like online classes, but that'd be hellish for any extrovert student.

Personal note :
I used to be the shy kid at the back of the class. School gave me the opportunity to understand how relationships worked and how important they were for my general well-being. And now, since the year I've learnt to become outgoing (thanks to a bunch of wonderful people I met at school), I've never been happier.

All depends what u wanna use it for. I personally wud get the iPad Air b/c larger display but portable still, I like having attachable keyboard so it doubles as a travel laptop for work/school, great for drawing, too and multitasking.

iPad mini can do similar things and have the same HQ on display, just smaller and better ergonomically.

Just try to think what you're gonna do when you have one or the other, and see where that takes you.

About affordability, ummm... if u can, try to buy a second hand or an open box of the devices (open box is just where a person bought it and returned it in a few days so it's still relatively new but the price has been downgraded by a few $100s).

I think some of the values are mixed up. The lamps are mostly darker than the dresses, and the dresses and skin tones are super similar in value

but then, the value study makes it look like the skin tones are much higher value than the dresses, which, in turn, look much lower in value than the lamps

you might be thinking too much in terms of what you imagine the brightness of the objects to be, vs what the lighting conditions actually produce

i think a good way to sort of just look at the values is to unfocus your eyes while looking at the original piece, that way, you don't see any clear forms, just the brightness and colour

Hmmm, I get where you're coming from but this was a value study in terms of read-ability (for thumbnailing). I could have definitely made the dress white and skin gray though for a different vibe/effect

I have never thought about doing value studies for readability, so this is very new to me. It seems very interesting because I always thought about copying values exactly, instead of redesigning them.

the shoulders look pretty box like and broad. Also try using the concept of Big Medium Small on the clothing to make the crease marks more realistic. You should also try to use less lines and create 'shapes.' You should also use a reference even if it's a simple pose. Good job though!
