seconding what luffy said, I'd push the shadows darker (in addition, play around with both hard and soft edges when shading!). I'd also add darker colors on the bottom of the hair/the distinct sections to help refine the shape/perspective (which you did do on the bottom left. I looked up the anime, this is something that they also utilize). I also think that the head would cast a shadow to the lower left with its position (that's if there is no dominant light source, hard to tell without the reference.) For the background (specifically the flames/ effect around him), I'd either leave it lighter and slightly darken the edges and then push the contrast with the figure (darkening the overall shading), or, make it darker to highlight the character as is. The focus should be on deciding what should be the darker value of the two (since its grayscale you'd want to consider contrast). I really like the swords, and the shading on the clothes and the arm are both good, id just try to stretch it more. :)

nice! it reminds me of an old film. I like the use of negative space in the 4th image, and i think you could potentially push the off the center framing (/rule of thirds) further for emphasis. The closer shots show the emotions of the subject (and provide an effective claustrophobic composition) but potentially having an image less focused on this ,and more around the environment framing the figure, could help establish that importance in the other images through juxtaposition, as well as provide environmental storytelling. (you could also change the angle. I'm not sure how to phrase this, but while the mirror is clearly important, the figure is always positioned almost always fully facing it. (which is effective, if this was your goal.) shifting the angle of the camera or the subject could help to create thematically similar but uniquely dynamic image profiles.)

i tend to ramble on so ill try to be concise! I think the basic shape is good, and it is recognizable as both a pear and the reference image. For the pear itself, i think you could try to focus on the direction of your shading. (and potentially lean more into cross hatching). The shading should accentuate the form, as you're depicting a 3d figure. I'd also try to have more transitional values, as there are variations in the ref not present in the drawing. Try putting it through a black and white filter and observing the values.

I'd also fill in the background a bit more as it distracts from the subject. Hope some of this was useful :)

That’s a really vast improvement! I would just say try not to lose the definition between the darkest part of the pear and the background, some of you’re shadows are just a smidge too dark and I see you losing the shape a little. The cross hatching looks really good though!

If ur new to the digital space I recommended a cheaper entry like a samsung s6 lite which comes with an s pen in the box

I went with that and bought an iPad pro 12.9 as I got more comfortable later on

The 64 gbs in the tab s6 lite is very limiting tho especially when working with a program that makes big project files

I've tried the s pen and the apple pencil as well as alternatives to samsungs stylus and what I can tell you is that the apple pencil is by far the most comfortable portable experience you can get

Idk if art is something serious to you but honestly it can be applied to anything and in my experience it's non linear growth. A few months ago i actually felt like nothing was holding me back from achieving greatness but now I'm feeling down because I'm starting to notice more mistakes. The key is knowing how to take the things you notice to learn and change from it.

You asked for some old art. I started 2022 with some really basic material and paper. I was in a bad state mentally because of covid and not passing any of my classes and i was pretty lonely (I literally made the first one while sitting on the sport field alone cuz no one was playing with me) but starting art as a hobby helped me get back up and it didn't matter wether i was gonna do this as a job someday or not but my liking to drawing anime characters slowly turned into a love for character concept art and character design. The character in both of these is from the show Wonder Egg Priority.

I mainly draw characters because it feels relieving to write your own or someone elses emotions and personality into a character that can reflect and express something to the world. Leya (my oc) is written to be way more extroverted than I am but in some ways I wrote my frustrations with the world into that character as she lived on an island and originally isnt accepted by other volk after leaving the island. Trough iterations I came to a unique hair shape I liked and wanted to keep in her design. This is one of the first sketches of her to now.

I figured that a character being hated by others wouldn't always result in a shut in character but also cocky ones too. I wanted it to be a parallel and contrast.

I'm also sometimes writing a story of that world as a hobby project

Here's also stylized coloring of the eyes if u wanna go further

I find that practicing a really simple version at the start (like just the form and guideline of the eye), then going more and more into the details with every practice session helps get the gist of it

If u understand how and where to place the guidelines of the eye correctly at the right perspective, then troubleshooting what looks off about the eye is much easier. A detail can work but it can also ruin the pre established idea of the eye if placed incorrectly. Lashes have to conform to the perspective as well.

It's been a while since I watched the sam video I sent but I think he also shows how he colors his eyelashes if I'm not mistaken

Ultimately it also ties back to properly understanding head construction so don't forget to also study that.

this was my first ever gouache painting compared my recent artworks with the 4th being the newest (the 2nd image was a quick value and hue study of gustave courbets painting).
Study and copy all different kinds of artists from different eras, genres and mediums, that will get you far in learning what you want to do with your art. Growth mindset and the ability to be open to all kinds of methods and techniques will change your mental game and will bring great growth. Look up a bunch of methods and see what sticks.

if you look at a reference of voluminous hair you will be able to point out certain sections within the hair. focusing on these sections rather than drawing individual strands helps. there’s someone on youtube called angel ganev and he has a dope tutorial on this that i recommend! your sketches look great though :)

Idea of it came to me during my morning stretching so I immediately took all of my essentials - my mat, my heels and To the Lighthouse written by Virginia Woolf - outside with me and there on the side of a roadway, circa 100 m away from my house, I placed my phone and mat on different sides of a road and recorded a video from which I extracted this snapshot.
I want this to be a testimony of some sort, that no matter how strange the idea seems, when you know - in your gut - that it's worth giving it a try, get out there boldly. Get out of your head and experiment.

Is it ok to redraw an AI art but in your own style? Is it ok to heavily reference it ?

I'm not telling how you should live your life but personally I think it's morally wrong on the basis that you're using what is essentially a smooshed together photo trained on several photographers works, as well as other artists and the like who did not give permission in the creation of this reference photo.
I'd rather support photographers who offer reference photos to practice from. Some do it for free, some offer collections for money. When you only rely on generated content you essentially rob the job of photographers who are artists just like you. And I think we shouldn't support an Ai that can replace you as well as the photographer.
(Again this is just my view)

It also is a bad thing to do from the perspective of somebody who wants to learn how to draw with the correct techniques and correct anatomy. An AI might have the wrong idea of anatomy and if you copy that idea, you essentially have a wrong mental library that will not be beneficial to your art journey, wether you do this as a hobby or want to take on a professional route.

It's also might misrepresent the subject matter you are drawing, potentially making a drawing that is tone deaf to the audience you want to present it to, that could make them feel disrespected as a person, group or minority.
