good question, it really depends on a lot of different factors. some important ones are your current strengths and weaknesses (for the different sections), how much time you have, how well you are able to focus and also other info like what score you are aiming for depending on your goals

that being said, you should try to determine how many hours you study for the ucat based on that. personally, when I studied for it, I didn't do very long hours because its different from normal tests and exams. I took time to give my mind the mental break and to also evaluate my progress at certain checkpoints and adjust my hours based on that

#

3 weeks is definitely not a lot of time though, so you'll probably have to study for longer periods. If you are naturally able to understand the concepts a little better than most others, then its just enough time to prepare, in my opinion.

After an ovulation, corpus luteum is formed from the remnants of matured oocyte, this corpus thing start to act as a endocrine gland which produces progesterone, this hormone stimulates the growth of endometrium so that if the oocyte is fertilised by a sperm it will then find the endometrium ready to host the zygote that will give us later an embryo (early stage of fetus). After the endometrium is ready it will have some vesicles inside full of nutrients, which is required in the process of ontogenesis

#

I really don't know if there is a relationship between both hormones (estrogen/progesterone). But I believe they have antogenic effects. However it been a while since I studied this topic, I strongly suggest that you use Janquira book of histology.

#

And if you find the relationship please let me know!

i'm unsure if your question completely applies to me but here are my 2c.
it depends how much in depth you have to go, but SketchyMicro worked wonders for me to help me remember all of the different bugs and drugs. i love it. 4.5 years later and i still remember some details that peharps i wouldnt remember had i not used it. SketchyMicro + anki is golden.
I think an important part of micro is understanding the mechanisms. if you understand it, you'll remember it better and for longer.
my favourite book is probably Sherri's Medical Microbiology. It's a wonderful book. after you've studied a chapter or something make sure to do a couple of practice question/clinical cases to solidify your understanding of the material.
if you need something more in-depth than SketchyMicro but not as deep as a full-on microbiology textbook perhaps you can try "Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple", it's like Sketchy but I think it goes a little more in-depth.
Finally, because Microbiology in general is very memorization-heavy, you'll probably derive some value from using Anki (if you're not familiar with the app yet look it up, it can work wonders for you if you use it properly).
finally, i'll just say that do find out if microbiology is something that interests you, perhaps there's something that interests you more and that would be better pursuing in the long run; idk, just something i'd throw out there.
hope you find something useful here. 🙂

heyy, i am a final year dentistry student. We study medical microbiology in second year of college. I scored highest in micro. even after not liking it at all the whole year. But now i find it very easy! So, what i did to score good was putting everything in front of my eyes. Like, mico is all about things that u don't see with naked eyes, so lots of imagination. When i read it i Googleed every organism. I read the characteristics of them amd made a schematic picture too. I made an A1 sized chart paper with tables comparing every bacteria i needed to know about. Then, everything i needed to know was out there in front of me. And knew what was i talking about how they looked. I can show u a picture of that chart if u want! its still pasted on my wall. Hope it helps! Good luck to ya!

# idle moth i think we can use Bailey's hexaxial system to solve this. if i'm understanding ...

At first i thought it's T wave inversion, that it has something to do with pathology cuz yanno it's already inverted in the second lead, then aVR must have positive deflection, but what professor really wanted is exactly what you explained. Can you pls, myb in private messages or here do more explaining or suggest where can i learn more about this, if this topic comes across again.Thank you in advance!

cunning trellis
proud sable
idle moth
# jade flame At first i thought it's T wave inversion, that it has something to do with patho...

rule of thumb is that aVR will always be opposite to lead II. if you look at Bailey's hexaxial system they're almost opposite (the positive electrode in aVR is located on the right arm while DII's positive electrode is on the left foot), so whatever we find on aVR should be opposite to most of the findings on the lead extremities (DII being an example).
if you'd like a more in-depth explanation you can check out chapter 4 on Guyton and Hall's Medical Physiology Textbook and/or Chapter 4 on Goldberger's Clinical Electrocardiography (this one is relatively short, 6 pp). I have access via my uni account to that chapter, if you'd like I can send it to you, just shoot me a message 🙂

#

And you have to memorize each nerve root to which dermatome supply

dire void
# proud sable Hi Zee👋 so you know that the sciatic nerve roots are from L4-S3, and the most c...

hi, ella! ❤️
i think what i'm confused about is not really an isolated nerve fibre injury. a lesion between l3 and l4 would knock off l4, yes but that wouldn't knock off the entire sciatic nerve from what i have read, since the sciatic nerve would still get its supply from l5s1s2s3. therefore a disc herniation between l3 and l4 would only cause nerve impingement of l4, the sciatic nerve wouldn't lose all its nerve conduction.

#

but then when they say that a c1 c2 injury occurs, you lose all function below the level of lesion, basically becoming quadriplegic. so, in the same way i assumed that a lesion at l3 would knock the entire sciatic nerve, but that's not the case. a lesion below s2 causes complete loss of conduction in sciatic nerve.

proud sable
#

@dire void don’t get confused between spinal cord compression for example (at level of C2) and the radiculopathy which is spinal ROOT compression or impingement for example ( compression of the root of C2 spinal nerve).

#

@dire void spinal cord compression can cause defect below the level of the lesion, while radiculopathy causes defect and pain at specific peripheral nerve

#

@dire void And to make it more clear, the spinal cord gives spinal nerves at each level (spinal roots) then many of them join together to make the peripheral nerves for example ( sciatic, radial n). So compression of one spinal ROOT will not affect the ENTIRE peripheral nerve, while compression of a PERIPHERAL nerve( example RADIAL nerve compression) can affect the ENTIRE nerve.

proud sable
# dire void but then when they say that a c1 c2 injury occurs, you lose all function below t...

Here when they said loss of all functions below the level of C1-C2 that means we have SPINAL cord injury not RADICULOPATHY. And if you assumed the lesion at L1 it depends on the type of the lesion, if it is a spinal cord injury at the level of L1 then all functions below the lesion will be affected including the entire sciatic nerve. whereas L1 spinal root impingement will causes radiculopathy and will affect only a part of a peripheral nerve and all functions below the lesion will be INTACT.

DNA replication is semiconservative
So of the two strands constituting the new dna ,one strand is from the parent dna which has its telomere present(if shortened being reformed by telomerase)
But how on the newly formed strand of the new dna on the 3dash end is a telomere present?
How is that formed?

Telomere end of a somatic cell DNA is not replicated completely. With every cell division it shortens due to absence of telomerase activity. That's why aging occurs in normal cells and not in stem cells which have the telomerase activity. This is what I remember

at least in my experience, anatomy is not something you can memorise in one sitting (in fact, most info you can't reliably and accurately memorise in one sitting)

if you're not familiar with the concept of the 'forgetting curve' then have a look at that. it'll help you to understand why the techniques I mentioned above work (namely active recall and spaced repetition)

I have some pre-made decks but I mainly prioritise doing decks I've made because they align much better with my school's learning outcomes. Although for anatomy, if you really want to do well, you need to do more than your school covers (generally)

Um.. Hello guys! I am actually curious about something.
Although, i am in high school rn and i am basically clueless about alot others things, i need to sort out which area i want to go to for further studies. So this is what i need help in.
I am leaning more on either biomedical engineering or go to med.
I was wondering how and whether, after studying med(if i do go to medical field), if it would be possible for me to be a general doctor to serve countries that are in need of medical help.
Basically, (i dont know if i am making sense) i want to be a doctor that helps people during crisis and for people that dont have the utilities for themselves.
So i was wondering in what ways i can do that if i study med,( whether i need to work for a hospital or any organisation) and what are the pros and cons of being such kind of doctor.

You have to be 100% sure that you want to be a doc, medicine is not easy you will sacrifice your young life, and be ready to study your whole life. the most stressful period is when you are a student and you have to pass lots of tests and exams if you want to work in the US you will have to deal with a certification process where you have to pass step 1 which will almost kill you (it will change your identity and values in life) after you survive it, you will have to pass step 2 and oet if successful= you'll get your ECFMG certificate which you will have to apply to several clinics(programs) if you will have good cv and get lucky you will match to a particular program. and of course, after becoming certified doc you can serve countries that are in need of medical help under the name of your hospital or particular organizations(like pharm companies) if you will still have that initial fire in your heart

I am really glad for your advice.
Its true, i am not 100% on med because i know med isnt easy and i dont know if i can handle it all because i get overwhelmed easily.
I am sure there is alot more to "its not easy" and that actually is something i am afraid of.
So, honestly i dont know if med is what i want 100% but atm, i dont know what i actually want.
But i still have some time to figure it out, so i will have to ask around and know what best fits me, my interests and how i want to contribute to the world.
I hope i will geet into what's good for me.

2.) the way i actually learn it is active recall + spaced repetition - for me i use anki and its algorithm is a godsend but experiment with what works for you!

modest osprey
# proud sable Is USMLE the same as step1 ?

It's basically USMLE Step 1. USMLE has 3 steps.
Step 1 has basic sciences and you get a pass/fail report on it
Step 2 used to have two parts: Clinical Knowledge (CK) and Clinical Skills (CS)
Step 2 CS was a viva/interview type exam, so it was cancelled during CoVID. I'm not sure if it will be back.

You can get a residency in US with the first 2 steps, Step 3 is an additional exam. It will come in handy if you want to go into a specific specialty

here is some advice on how to publish an article as a medical student:

Choose a relevant topic: Select a topic that is relevant to your field of study and that you are passionate about. Consider recent advances or current trends in medicine.

Conduct thorough research: Gather and review relevant literature to support your work. Use reputable sources such as medical journals, textbooks, and databases.

Write a clear and concise article: Use a clear and concise writing style. Ensure that the article is well-organized and easy to understand. Follow the guidelines for manuscript submissions provided by the journal you are targeting.

Get feedback: Share your work with your peers, mentors, and/or supervisors for feedback. Seek constructive criticism and make revisions as needed.

Submit to a suitable journal: Choose a reputable and relevant journal to submit your article to. Make sure to read the author guidelines carefully and follow all instructions for manuscript submission.

Be patient: Publishing can be a long process, so be prepared to wait several weeks to several months for a response from the journal. If your article is rejected, don't be discouraged. Consider seeking feedback from the reviewers and making revisions before resubmitting to another journal.

By following these steps, you will increase your chances of successfully publishing an article as a medical student. Good luck!

# uncut roost Hey guys, I´m new to this server and comunnity, I entered Medicine at my Univers...

if I could give myself any advice when I first started studying med, it would probably be along the lines of this:

  1. Mindset -> super important since it determines your approach, attitude and how you respond to setbacks/progress
  • you can't know everything about everything, and if you're prone to perfectionism that might get really unhealthy -> so be ok with not knowing everything and don't be afraid to ask questions from your tutors and peers
  1. Study (and soft) skills
  • soft skills like reflection are crucial because you wanna focus on personal and professional development and it helps build awareness on areas you can improve and also in general how you act around others (important for things like bedside manner)
  • in general you'll probably build other skills like planning, managing time and tasks, prioritisation etc
  • study skills -> also rly important since there is a lot of content and not a lot of time. focus on looking at evidence-based study methods but also make sure you enjoy it somewhat -> if its really effective but you put it off because you dislike it, might as well do something less effective but ensure you actually do it
  1. Habits
  • also important because what you do with non-study time does have an impact on your study time
  • it really is worthwhile cultivating good habits like getting regular exercise, enough sleep, going for walks to clear your mind etc
  • having good habits can improve your mood, attention and focus when you sit down at the table
  • again, there are science-based tools you can use to improve memory and focus and other skills that can really reduce your study time
  1. Enjoy it
  • learning about med and the human body is quite interesting so try to enjoy what you're doing
  • things will get stressful but if you have a good attitude and approach you'll be alright
  • connections are important -> treasure your friendships and relationships and family

all the best!!

Can someone say the difference between acromegaly and gigantism

umbral ivy
#

Gigantism occurs in case of hypersecretion of GH in childhood, before the fusion of the conjugation cartilages
In acromegaly, GH hypersecretion usually begins between 20 and 50 years after the suture of the conjugation cartilages, thus

So acromegaly is more more severe

conjugation cartilages = physis, epiphyseal plate in english (according to my dictionary)

# proud sable Hello there Can you give me some tips to how study general Anatomy efficiently?

i use anki (active recall + spaced repetition) and practise qs

Some good resources I use are:

starting off with YouTube channels
-> Institute of Human Anatomy
-> Ninja nerd
-> Dr Matt and Dr Mike
-> Neuroscientifically Challenged (neuroanatomy ONLY)

websites:
The only website I really use is teachmeanatomy

anki decks:
i premake ankis from my lectures and also use DopeAnatomy (pre-made deck that you can download from reddit)

Hope that was helpful!

I have trouble with focusing can someone give me some tips?

proud sable
#

For me :
I put my tasks from the last night and put the phone on study mode so i stay away of distraction of social media
Weak up early is a perfect solution and you can see the benefits immediately
You don't get the best state of focus as fast as you think . You should train your brain every day you can start with3 hours of the day and increase it .
And if any saw any thing wrong write it down to put a solution for it
You can use apps that lock the games during the study session.
And the key solution for the daily focusing is to reward yourself with something fun and makes you comfy .

iron socket

# flat stone I have trouble with focusing can someone give me some tips?

-> pomodoro technique
-> have separate browsers for work vs chilling (for me opera is used for chilling whereas firework is used for work)
-> have separate accounts for social media (i have a separate discord which has my friends on it and is used only for chilling, separate YouTube accounts, etc.)
-> have study playlist
-> have different places for studying vs relaxing (for me i go to the library to work as it just works for me and when i go back home I chill)
-> put your phone on do not disturb
-> coffee/caffeine
-> get an accountability partner/study buddy
-> give yourself proper breaks from studying

novel gull
# proud sable simple columnar epithelium consists of lining of uterus but also does translatio...

transitional epithelium is only found in the urinary system (ureters, urinary bladder, superior urethra)

the cervix (which is the inferior most portion of the uterus) contains simple columnar epithelium but as it transitions to the vagina it becomes stratified squamous epithelium and some textbooks refer to that area as the “transition zone” and its where pap smears are done since it is* prone to developing carcinomas

#

so maybe you read transition zone and got confused, since transitional epithelium is exclusive to the urinary system

Personally I really believe that a person should not neglect his or her sleep, especially for students that need to have a good amount of, so that the brain processes the info that was injected to it in the morning.
Think of it like your brain is a supercomputer you give it files and it installs it during the night, if there will be problem with the installing (sleeping). Your brain will still install the left files during your wake time that's why people who study a lot tend to have deflect focus.

#

Try to fix your sleeping issues, I don't advise you to administer any sort of drugs including melatonin since you may show some addiction to it.
Eat will, why not have some supplements especially vitamins
And most importantly reduce your stress

#

not to be blunt, but when you don’t get sufficient sleep (good quality and duration and at the right time) you’re setting yourself up to be very inefficient in terms of your ability to perform cognitive work and its not a sustainable way to study.

when you’re asleep, your brain clears chemical by-products that build up during the day. it also strengthens neural connections and consolidates information from the day and encodes it for further learning. by doing so, it clears information from your short term memory and frees it up for further learning the next day. when you don’t get enough sleep, you’re not able to process and store the information you learnt that day AND you’re not able to understand and comprehend facts (cognitive work) the NEXT day so its really going to be an endless cycle of feeling like you’re not doing enough and not being productive and therefore you stay up later

i have a small question, do any of you know any good introductory videos/webinars (or textbooks) that give a good introduction to the different principles of radiographic anatomy? (ie things such as positioning and it's effects, how you can estimate whether or not something is closer or more distant from you in the image (even though there is ofc superposition, but to some degree you can distinguish this)). I don't have a textbook recommended by my vet school, neither does my professor give any introductory principles etc. Would be of great help if you knew a good introduction! (both human and vet textbooks would be of great help, just anything with a proper beginnerlevel explanation for these principles). Thanks in advance ppl :))

  1. not sure exactly but i'd wager there is always a pool of charged tRNAs in the cell! remember that your cells are constantly making a bunch of proteins from different mRNA molecules.
  2. it's not that the mRNA codons attract the right tRNA molecule per se. a tRNA will only bind the mRNA if its anticodon matches the codon, so only the correct tRNA can be recruited.

nope. erythema is a general term used to describe a clinical feature. it is superficial redness of the skin, secondary to the dilation of capillaries. so you can say that a patient has erythema but that term itself is not a diagnosis/condition. with scalded skin syndrome (and most skin and soft tissue infections), you would expect the patient to have erythema

This question is a bit ridiculous honestly, is it taken from a textbook? But I guess they mean which taxon is defined by actual, materialistic reality. A species is defined as a group of animals that can produce viable offspring together. You can directly observe this in nature. Whereas phylum, class, and genus are defined by theoretical relations in terms of anatomy/evolution/physiology, as conceptualized by scientists.

#

Good question. I think the answer is simple, the blood in veins is detoxified when it passes through the liver by the portal vein, then it passes through the systemic arterial blood, only then it is filtrated by the kidneys

novel gull
# gusty fable guys, can someone explain me what does an hypokaliemia does for the excitablity ...

From what I've read, it depends on whether you're talking about pacemaker cells in the heart or neurones/muscle

In neurones/muscles: Hypokalemia alters the resting membrane potential such that it is more negative, making the cell harder to excite. it causes hyperpolarisation. Normal value of intracellular concentration of K+ is approx. 148 mEq/L and that of extracellular concentration of K+ is approx. 3.5 - 5 mEq/L.

If there is hypokalemia, the extracellular concentration drops to a lower value (less than 3.5) which means there is a STEEPER concentration gradient because the values are further apart, meaning that K+ has a greater tendency to diffuse out of the cell and that results in a more negative intracellular environment since you are losing some K+ which is a positive ion, leading to hyperpolarisation and this makes the cell harder to excite.

In pacemaker cells: the HCN channels (pacemaker channels) that contribute to spontaneous depolarisation are activated by less K+ diffusing out of the cell from the previous action potential and this results in a continuous cycle of depolarisation. If you have hypokalemia here, it means that the steeper gradient results in less K+ diffusing out which activates HCN channels to a greater degree, increasing Na+ and Ca2+ influx and increasing heart rate, and it can cause hyperexcitability of the pacemaker cells leading to arrhythmias

hmm insead of looking at all the studying and review u have to do as one big task, break it down into smaller task, one at a time, for exp, u could be like "ok this session will be for 2 hour n during it, i will focus on reading a chapter and taking notes and reviewin material" or "i will spend 1 hour wokring on some practice questions and answering them". breaking up ur studying into smaller chnks can help to make it feel less overwhelming

# jagged obsidian how yall convince yourself to start a long session? im studying to go to med sch...

Once you start studying and get into a state of flow, time doesn't matter. You will automatically end up studying for long hours. So I suggest to you that instead of having fixed study hours, decide on the topics to cover in a day. Start small, try doing 3-4 topics each day, slowly increase your limit. As long as you enjoy the process you will be able to study for long hours. You can make it more interesting by solving problems after studying a particular topic and then rewarding yourself accordingly. It will make it more challenging and fun.
