YESSS HAHAHAHA
Guys can anyone from a literature major help me out with my essay
Does anyone have some comprehensive English Placement tests?
This kind of test is used in European universities to place students into a certain language group, depending on their previous results. It would be ideal if you had several variants of the same test, so I'd be able to track my progress over time.
I remember taking such test when I was a student myself, but now I can't find anything solid on the Internet.
Many thanks in advance!
Have you tried IELTS? There’s online free tests on the IDP practice page
Not yet.
I came across a few sites (the first results on Google) where you take a test and then they won't send you your results unless you pay them first.
So, that's why I decided to ask you for some pdfs leaks.
Anyway, thanks for the advice! I'll visit official IELTS and TOEFL websites.
I also have all three "English in Use" books. Each of them has a study guide, which can help you reveal the gaps in grammar, but it is just one test, you won't be able to take it again after studying for a while. So, having five plus pdfs with the same structure and from the same source would be ideal.
Try these https://ielts.idp.com/kuwait/prepare
https://ieltstrainingonline.com
best of luck! These have the answers so you’ll have to calculate based off of the sample answers feel free to use ai to assist with the grading of the writing and speaking 🙂

Thanks again!
Yes, I am usually maxing out my ChatGPT subscription daily - either free speaking for an hour or practicing with standard IELTS questions 😅
Hi. I'm writing this text using translation.
I'm currently learning English and Russian (I'm new to Russian). I want to speak English without using translation. I'm a little shy, sometimes I don't know what to say.
Anyway, since I won't be using translation, I might make mistakes. I need friends who can point out my mistakes and help me.
I can help you with that. Do you want writing or speaking practice?
what about watching the myriad of english media available online?
like movies, youtube videos, music
tysm, we can make writing practice
I am the same (learning English, but native Russian speaker).
So, we could sometimes practice grammar together.
.
Same here
woooowww that's so cool
I want to speak russian with you but my Russian is A1 🙁
hey, can anyone recommend some resources for learning swedish?? im on like a2 but have never properly studied with a book or anything so would rly appreciate anything

hello
I need to achieve 6.5 in IELTS exam
in my last attempt I get 5 overall
shoud i continue taking practice tests or try to improve my level then taking tests ?
Practice tests
They will help you realise where you're falling short
Then wherever you aren't getting the topic
You do more questions on that topic
And then repeat the cycle
Hello, I am in the same situation. I am going to do my IELTS academic in September. I would like to improve my fluently. I am a native Spanish speaker. If someone want to practice Spanish write me 🙂

If u need any help, more than happy to assist you!
Does anyone know where to start in terms of learning a language
Like should I start learning some vocabulary first then do grammer
are you like the very beginner?
Yeah I'm planning on starting today
Italian
Start off with basic vocabulary and immersion. You can achieve that by listening to podcasts or watching films/ YouTube videos in your target language
maybe use duolingo to learn vocab
Okay then after that should I learn grammar?
I heard that duolingo isn't that good
well im using it to learn chinese lol
Oh okay lol
dont know about italian yet!
That’s depends on what your initial language is. For me specifically I’m learning Russian and grammar is a big NO. It’s not like I’m planning to write essays in Russian. Grammar is the more technical stuff
okay, so there's a technique called M.I.N.D, im using it to learn japanese and french
Yeah 👀
hai douzo
You can learn almost any language, and 6-12 months is all it takes.

Okay I'll check it out thx
Oh I'm just planning on speaking the language not really writing
It and stuff
So I'll focus more on vocabulary
Okay Maybe word order and some grammar sure. Though make sure you know how to pronounce the words.
Yeah, that’ll be a good start.
Okay I'll do that thanks
and you need to pick up a accent, cause it's really important in order to speak things clearly
I find it really hard to get an accent, do you just gradually get it over time
I've tried learning other languages in the past and pronunciation is one of the hardest things about it
you develop it when you get in a lot of input
like podcasts, movies, music, etc
So just watch some good shows/videos in that language and
Ah okay I see
it doesn't matter if you're not able to understand them, cause you will eventually, but it does help you to develop an accent early on
and talk out loud! read texts out loud and say the vocabulary out loud while studying
Okay thank u sm
Okay ill try that
i'm a newbie as well, i try 🙂
Good luck learning your language
same to you

For those of you here learning japanese, there is this app called Amino. The app would be considered a social media platform (its kind of like a combination of FB and Reddit). The reason I am bringing it up is because there is one group in particular called: Japanese School and there you can learn Japanese for free. Every 10 weeks they start a new curriculum, from beginner to intermediate. Everything is free, there is a lesson every saturday/sunday (via chat) including homework and possible additional support. If you have questions about this don't hesitate to ask me, ping me or sen be a PM.
Note. There are groups for practically every language. I am for example also in a group for German learners. The quality and way they work differs per group but it should at least be able to bring you into contact with other learners of your target language.
omg thanks you sm
tysm
anybody know good podcasts that speak in french im learning and trying to improve my pronunciation :>
Coffee break French
I don't know what your level in french is but "Rendez-vous avec X" is an excellent podcast about spying. It is a conversation between a former spy and a journalist. they don not use basic language but their pronunciation is very clear
hi guys im new^^

oh ty so muchh
If you have any questions regarding the group just ping me

Im trying to learn german and french is there any good books, youtube pages or such?
Im a2-b1 in german a1 in french
Turkish, im struggling with grammar and listening tbh
Until end of summer i want to be b1-2 in german
How well do you know the english grammer?
I can link you book about german but it is in english
Im good with english almost like native at this point
Lol i made a grammar mistake already
It would be great
I have themen aktuel is it good?
I don't know that one in particular
We use Sicher! for my study, it is completely in German but it has different levels
Also, For listening I'll recommend you some stuff in a bit
Actually if its in german it think it would be better i could learn new german words in between practices
Alright, check out the Sicher! books by Heuber (www.heuber.de). I hope you can order them
Thankss a lottt
Also one last question
Do you know any podcasts?
Thank youuuu that helps a lot ✌🏽
Those 2 are books that I have recieved and are apparently useful, do note that I personally don't use them
Okay ill keep that in mind
BTW the reason i don't use them is cause my learning language for German isn't english so it would needlessly complicate things for me
Okayy thanks for explanation👍🏽
Im sure they are good books
Podcasts: Fest & Flauschig Nachrichten -Deutschlandfunk Auf Deutsch gesagt (B2+) Langsam gesprochene Nachrichten (Mit Text) Easy German (B1+) Auf der Bahn Coffee break German (alltagsleben)https://radiolingua.com/category/coffee-break-german/ Hin & weghttps://podtail.nl/podcast/hin-weg-das-...
My own list with resources for german
I believe all of them are german-german but there might be a lost german-dutch one in there
Thank you so much you were really helpful 🍀 ill listen them thanksss
Its ok ✌🏽
Np, feel free to ping me if you have any questions
I am studying to become a german teacher so i should at least be of some help haha
Awww thanks a lot good luck with your studies too im sure youll be a great teacher 👍🏽
check francaisfacile.com for french
maybe it's a bit hard idk but it has tons of exercices on anything
Thankss, it really seems like a good website, is there any good grammar books that you familiar with?
Thanks 🍀
Tell me if someone needs help in french, I am from France and I can help you
Which is easier to learn Italian or Spanish? I'm having a hard time choosing between the two
Spanish
But like if your first language is English German is good because English derives from old German
Right
dutch is like a mix between German and English
i have never studied dutch but as a native speaker in german i can understand almost everything lol
Spanish
would anyone be willing to practice speaking english over voice channel next week? i have an oral exam on 12th and haven't spoken english for more than a year because of corona
ahh thank youu
thank you ill check it ou
While it might not be to hard to learn do not overlook the pronounciation aspect
As far as I am aware Dutch is very hard for native English speakers to pronounce properly
What is up my boy Tan, I have a lot of podcasts that I recommend you. Let me know what kind of topics you're interested in.
Yeah especially the rs
im into movies really like them
I've even heard stories of people going to the hospital because of a dutch course they did in wich they did a lot of speaking in a short period of time
I'd be more concerned about the G
My gma described it as a drunk german person speaking english
In that case, I will recommend you the podcast "Deux heures de perdues". It's a podcast were four guys will discuss a "cult" film and will talk about all of the references/plot twists/inconsistencies in the film.
cool thank youu
They're pretty fun, but they will sometimes talk really fast and will talk one over the other.
im a beginner but ill listento it hahaHAha
I'll start with the podcast: Innerfrench then.
The guy speaks slow and he teaches you useful everyday phrases that will make you sound like a native in no time.
thank youu
I got a bunch my man, podcast were my go-to when I was learning french.
pm me a list hahah?
Sure.

Is it the inhabitants of the island love and Anna and Helen? Or the inhabitants of the island love Anna and Helen?

Thank u very much!
Thanks for your help!!
im also terrible at writing them. i think looking at examples of good essays and try looking at essay questions and making a plan of what you would write ( so you dont have to write an entire essay. but if your teacher is open to it then you could give them practice essay and ask for advice)

thanks, yeah i think this one's difficult but that's okay
Has anyone tried Lingoda?
app?
Online language program, if you complete the sprint and all of the classes you get your money back
seeemss legittt
nah, haven't tried yet
i also recommend the discords for latin im sure there must be peope who can help you more
yeah i think so but the link you give is also helpful everything is there in one place
also wiktionary is your bff for the words definition and verbs
@naive ridge @hard cedar While i don't have a comprehensive guide i think something that is very important to keep in mind is that you divide it into 3 different main parts, the beginning, the middle and the end. The main question should be addressed in the beginning but not really elaborated upon. In the middle you will address the main question an elaborate upon it, how/why this question, how did you research it, what are you answers and findings, etc. In the end you will make your conclusion of all your findings and its is very important to not introduce any new information, you can see the end as something that you could read to get the gist of the findings.
Someone that hasn't read the paper should be able to get most of the important information from only reading the beginning and the end.
Hope this helps at least somewhat
Umm greetings everyone, any tips to learn language effectively? I'm majoring french for almost 1 year but still struggle at speaking, writing and pronounce the french "r". Thanks in advance.
Once you have the basics down( aroundA2) I think it's best to consume a lot of media in your target language
This will increas your mastery by exposing you to a lot of new words, sentece/grammar structures and other concepts
Any1 who is learning japanese?
I am
@normal void do you enjoy learning jap?
yes but I am very much a beginner ^^
@normal void thats completly fine, i haven’t started only learnt some things of anime and the internet
yeah well I speak two languages but japanese grammar is something I have to get used to. Are you actively learning?
Maybe I can recommend you some apps! 🙂
@normal void i would love that
Haha alright I'm using 'Hey Japan' this on is the best if you want to learn grammar easily, also very good for pronounciation and for learning how to build sentences , listening is also quite good. What I dont like about this one ist that the lesson are always the same, so you can just repeat the lessons you already did. Also not good at reading comprehension because the romanji are always there
Hey Japan really gets you started quickly
okay, i will be downloading that. Thank you for telling me, will help out allot🤝
for a slow and more in depth start you can use 'memrise'
i learn pretty quick so il try hey japan first
this one has video clips of native speakers and focuses on some important words first
I am not far enough with this one to tell you about the grammar
grammar will come with time
duolingo is pretty good i have been using that for my dutch too
yeah but duolingo isnt that good at teaching the grammar through the lesson and they really want your money
lol that is true, duolingo want some big money
how to get motivated to study lol
soo annoying😂 you can also message me privately if you want to talk about your progress
you need driveeee
i have
Il add u for when i get started
Tbh that gave me enough
And making my mom proud works for me
sounds nice momma proud
U got ur finals coming?
I work to make myself proud 🙂
nah, next year tho
ah i see what are u learning for?
do you know what IB is?
I do not, let me search
aight
im taking psychology, biology and english high level
so thats what i should focus on
biology oh man i hated that
I had biology advanced classes 😄
english is an amazing subject for me
Native speaker?
The netherlands
im polish
german
i tried to learn german for a week but i decided to wait
I sucked at english in school
yeah english is enough for germany
it confuses me since dutch and german have allot of things in common but a lil different
dutch is extremly confusing for me like a combination of english and german
I speak french spanish and english... is german a good language to learn next?
Don't know honestly as a native speaker I find it complicated sometimes
@normal void ye i got the same
but pronounciation is way more consistent than english
@normal void thanks very much
🙂 see u
idk what language yall are learning but a really good tool to use to grow your vocab is anki
personally im learnning japanese and its really helping
id say i made really good progress with it
So for now i need to mastery the basic first, thank you
ahh interesting I'll remember that. I want to start of without too much vocab tho so I'll add that when I' ready
learning japanese with kotoba bot
French too?
my kanji improve a lot
how does this work
anki is a flashcard programm, so basiclly it should work for all languages
just search it on google, then invite it to ur dc server
ah ok!
Thanks for the information man, appreciate it
you can check out refold too, for more advanced steps, it certainly helped me alot of know what to do
I mean yeah if yiu can't completely go into the language (I. E. Eat breath live the language) I would start by mastering the basics; the script, basic words, easy conversations and then expand upon it. It is best to read/consume media that is just a tiny bit above your current level. Studies tell us that being able to undstand 97% of what you consume is about ideal. The other 3% is stuff youll learn while consuming, if that makes sense
Mastering is quite wide, it often doesn't have to be perfect. I haven't mastered everything to perfection from my native language either
Also don't be afraid to use your language, you can only improve
Check MattvsJapan channel on youtube 😉
and Migaku on Youtube
I confirm!!!!
Anyone here studying German or willing to converse in German? I am taking German this semester but I have no one to talk to in the language and use what I am learning
apps, websites or people who teach!
talk to me I'm a native speaker
Oh? Okay. Forewarning, my grammar is poor.
Also the app Hello Talk allows you to talk to native speakers
yess

I am german but I am just able to talk and dont know the grammatics quite
so many german guys here! 😄
For my german friends, how do you say that you attached a file to an email?
There are quite some translations so I don't quite know which one to pick
Like, see the attachment for the document
Or I have attached the document or something similar
Ich habe eine datei an ihrer email angeh@fftet
Ich habe eine datei an ihrer email an gehangen
angehangen
Hi everyone.
If anyone interested to learn Arabic. Welcome 😁
I might be misunderstanding something but wouldn't that imply that it is their email? I am sending the email
Dutch guy here, who's done both CAE and CPE in English, so I can help with English, and Dutch! I also speak Russian, but not as well as I'd wanted!
Ich habe ihnen eine email geschickt wo die datei mit angehangen ist.
I want to learn German language
Ich habe Ihnen die Datei an die Mail angehangen.
Hello! if anyone needs help with spanish just ask c:
But i don't any word about this language
Woow I suppose it really is Ihnen then hmm
Or: Die Datei ist der Mail im Anhang beigefügt.
yh
No problem 🙂
😄 nice
Thank you both 🙂
Ich habe Ihnen das Dokument an die Mail angehangen.
would this also be correct?
Yes, that also works!
isnt an + dativ in this case?
her one is the same meaning just simpler written
Aha, I guess Dokument is preffered for me cause it is closer to my native language
Thank you 😄
Hi , Btw if anyone needs help with french, just ask me
Do any Spanish learners have any recommendations on how I can mix up my Spanish learning? I use duolingo but sometimes I go on 1-2 week slumps of getting bored and doing no learning 😦
If someone needs help with german feel free to ask me
Consume media that you are intersted in i.e. videos, movies, series, podcasts, newspapers etc.
Would you recommend i look for beginner-orientated media? or does it not matter how complex it is
Ideally someting where you udnerstand about 97% of all words
So it all depends on your level
obviously the 97% is a perfect world and not at all achievable all the time
you learn spanish beacuse you have to or want to?
But for instance don't consume child media if you would 100% understand everything
Also don't consume acadamic media if you would only understand 30%
Because i want to
I see I see
this is of course not applicable if you consume it for the pronounciation and stuff but it can get quite boring
the first question you have to ask yourself is why are you learning spanish, what do you want to do with that knowledge. Having your goals clear is essential when learning something new
@full estuary
Thanks a lot i dont know why i never considered listening to songs or watching films in the language before lol, it sound so obvious now that you say it
What also helps is watching something in your target language with your target language as dub
I don't recommend using another language as dub since it doesn't give you as much benefit but it can still work
This is very true, hopefully my newly-found drive in my studies will help my drive to learn spanish
Thanks a lot you guys
Hi German guys, is there any difference between Nachher and Danach ?
Correct me if I am wrong but
Nacher = later
Danach = afterwards
Nachher usually means "later" (Was machst du nachher - What are you doing later?) and danach means "afterwards/next" (Was kommt danach? - What's coming next?)
(But "Before and After" is "Vorher und Nachher")
@nimble tinsel @supple knoll ok thanks guys, it helped a lot
watch telenovelas, they are really fun
is there an english word for telenovelas?
soap opera i think
I'm peruvian so if You want, I can teach a little phrases in spanish
Aunque es un poco complicado hablar español, tienes que recordar que en Latinoamérica salen miss universo mayormente 😂
Hahaha damm xd
i don't think there is, actually, or maybe soap operas but it's just the same type of tv shows, just not from america latina (idk if it's the english word i'm just too used to the spanish word)
like the bold and the beautiful is a soap opera but it's not a telenovela
In Spain we use the word soap opera as "telenovela" whenever we have to talk in english, but I'm not sure if that's the word you're looking for, I guess it depends on the region
i have a question for people who speak japanease. When you're reading something, how do you know if つ is there to mark a small pause or as an actual letter? Is there any way i can tell whether I should pronounce it or not?
the size
作る=つくる= tsukuru
さっき = sakki
at the beginning it is hard to see the difference but, can you notice the second one (in sakki) is smaller than the first one (in tsukuru)?
c:
yoooo that is epic
I love japanese but there's no teachers in my region and I am too lazy :(
i am learning it on my own by using apps and watching youtube videos
you can do it!!
I will do it, I wanna go to japan and learn it there if I could, just like 5 years over there and learning by living. It's the best way to learn (especially a language) properly
and if I don't find the time or whatever I will learn it after my school is over / or atleast my finals
but one thing is certain, if I have any questions I'll just ask them here c:
if someone needs help with turkish, english feel free to ask me 🖖

yeah, thats ok
I could help
ohh thanks!! can i dm you to explain situation haha?
@final lark This is a reaction to your message in the to-do list channel (which is a weird placement imo) While yes it is technically possible to learn a language without consciously learning the grammar (look at little kids for example) I believe it has many benefits to learn the grammar if it is not your native language. I have no clue how to go about learning a language without grammar except diving into it, altho Japanese is probably not the easiest in this regard because they have certain rules that are very counter intuitive for native English speakers.

Learn Japanese through conversations!
Hey, I’m Ben. I’ve been learning Japanese for a while now (still learning!)
Started teaching it to beginners in 2015.
Made some videos in 2017 for my students to get more input.
You can find them here on this channel.
Hi, I'm Miku. My mission is to teach Japanese in fun and effective way!
I'd like to connect Japan and the world.
I hope my videos can help people who love Japan and Japanese language.
Thank you so much for learning my language!

Anime and manga (comic books) are great resources to learn Japanese. I love reading manga. I am japanese though. Attack on Titan (進撃の巨人) is one of the best. My recent favorite is World Trigger(ワールドトリガー)
Ehhh I disagree unless you know Japanese to a higher beginner level in which you can tie up words to the subtitles, however its not good for gramma/vocab imo
That's true. Once you've learned basic grammar and vocab, you can accelerate your learning by watching anime or reading manga etc.
Whew well I use this app called Bunpo it gives small vocabs with the alphabet and it has a really nice layout. An the art style makes it even better which feels rewarding while learning. I also use HelloTalk to talk to other Japanese Speakers/Natives
Yo i need someone who can speak spanish cuz i need to practice speaking skills
hello how do i say in french ''go on run'' like in a football game
I have a question, could you recommend some poems or in general literary work that all Korean people know (from f. ex. school)? It can be even stories for children but I'm just interested in reading something that is very popular and maybe referenced a lot even in a daily life (sort of like "to be or not to be")
i'm Spanish, if you need something tell me
In German, how is 'also' used. Ive seen it pop up and somewhat understood the context but still not sure what it mean or when it can be used
One of the most frequent uses is, when you say something like this: "Also ich habe keine Ahnung", which is translates to "So, I have no idea". Basically you use it as a English "So" in most cases.
Ah ok that was what i thought just needed to confirm thanks!
Hey, it will be like : Vas-y, cours
Wow thankss
Thanks 😁
Hello, is there a Spanish native speaker who could go through my ensayo/trabajo and correct it once I have it done? Thank youu ❤️
Yes, I'm spanish, if you need something ask me!
.
@naive raptor yo you free rn? i could actually need some help atm
"Cours!" = "Run!" (2nd person, singular)
"Courez!" = "Run!" (2nd person, plural)
"Vas-y, cours!" = "Go on, run!" (2nd person, singular)
"Allez-y, courez!" = "Go on, run!" (2nd person, plural)
hey guys, what does "coin a phrase" means? i read it read on the dictionary and i didn't grasp it at all
"to coin" means "to make up/invent"
so i bet you can figure out the meaning of "to coin a phrase" by yourself now. If not, let me know : )
can you make some examples?
"he coined the term ‘desktop publishing’"

hey guys,i was wondering that what's the difference between needn't have read and weren't supposed to read.can somebody help me?i thought that they had the same meaning
im not sure about this, so dont pin me on it. But it could be that needn't have read is about the unnecessity of reading it. The werent supposed to read is about it not being meant for you to read
needn't is only really used when speaking - you never see it written down because its quite formal
needn't -> need not [future tense]
weren't -> were not [past tense]
im not a native english speaker so gia is probably right 😄
thanks
thanks

Where can I learn, effectively, languages without being in a class for languages and without spending money cause im too young to have a job
What language are you intersted in learning
A lot. Where to start hehe
That is what you have to figure out first. What languages you are motivated to learn
I have a list.
I'd start off by choosing 1-3 and then choosing one that you find most intersting from there on
I don't recommend working on multiple languages at once
at least not until you've reached B1/2 level
Idk what that means but okay
IT's the ERK mastery level
It is a measuring system used in europe to see how well you know a specific language
Oh wow
I know that for spanish there are a ton of free resources out there since it is such a big language
Duolingo is always a good first choice just to come into contact with the language (generally it suck at grammar tho)
Hey! I want to learn Dutch but don't know where to start. Can somebody here help me?
I use Duolingo but it gets me nowhere. Its good for adding on new vocabulary, but it teaches nothing of sentence structure, grammar rules, or any of the concepts you need to truly understand a language.
If any English speakers need help with Spanish, or the other way around, I can help, just ping me or DM me, I'm always glad to help
For any language I recommend the following steps:
- learn script (if applicable)
- learn basic words/sentence structures
- learn grammar (yes it is possible to learn a language without grammar but I wouldn't know how)
- indulge yourself into media in said language
- deepen grammar and vocabulary
HAve you tried looking for sources online?
I understand this. But how? How do you learn these things? Or where?
I am sure that korean and spanish have a lot of online free sources ether these be youtube videos or apps
Yes. Anything that seems like it may be worth it costs at least $50 and my parents wont pay for anything unnecessary and I can't get a job yet
Youtube has many available courses from channels, they are not as interactive as apps but they do have more material, for popular languages, like spanish, you should have no trouble finding them
Okay, so tell me what language you want to focus on. Maybe I can find something for you
Right now, I want to focus on Korean. I will be studying there abroad in 3 years.
Do you have any examples you could show me? When I look it up all I get are videos for teaching babies or young children.
You can learn almost any language, and 6-12 months is all it takes.

Thank you so much! Would you, or your friend, mind if I got her contact information or her discord if she has one?
I love Kpop, my younger sister recently got me into it and the language just mesmerizes me.
Good thing that the script can be learned within a day apparently!
She speaks spanish and korean only, do you want me to ask her anyway?
Oh, in that case, I will keep that in mind and come back to you (if you don't mind of course) once I have a sort of proficiency in the language, to see if she would be willing to hold conversations with me in Korean.
Sure! I don't mind at all
Awesome, thank you all so much!
You are welcome!
