I just finished a book titled "Dopamine Nation" by Dr. Lembke (which was honestly just confirmation bias on my part) and a big aspect of her research surrounding this generation and addiction is the lack of what she calls "prosocial shame." Prosocial shame includes taking responsibility and, in the part of those surrounding the addicted, being pushed to better oneself. The opposite, I'll just call bad shame, is somehow a mixture of not taking ownership and having a support system that outcasts you for your actions. Its a loop.

Groups like AA already do this to an extent, by providing militant-esque values and a support group outside of one's natural habitat. I think casual addiction will be much harder to fight, and while places like this offer support groups of people who want to be more productive, I just cannot see it breaking into the main stream any time soon.
