Thinkpad? 10th gen intel or newer, or second gen AMD ThinkPads and newer are good aswell, anything with more then 16gb of ram. These are good 500$ options.
The T480 was a very popular ThinkPad for a while but 8th gen intel is showing its age. I'd recommend getting a T14 gen 1 or gen 2 if you can (ideally AMD.)
If you are for windows these machines will perform wonderfully, if you are a Linux person then they will also run wonderfully.

If looking for a MacBook anything M1 or better is perfect. I recommend getting any apple certified refurbished product as (IMO) they have the best bang for their buck.
MacBook air is usually good enough for most but MacBook Pros absolutely rip.
