Mr. Kirk was speaking at the University as part of The American Comeback Tour. Multiple SLC I and III agents responded immediately. The suspect fired one shot from an elevated position on a rooftop in an adjacent building on the campus and surveillance video shows the suspect jumping off and fleeing the area on foot. ATF and other law enforcement located an older model imported Mauser .30-06 caliber bolt action rifle wrapped in a towel in a wooded area near the campus. The location of the firearm appears to match the suspects route of travel. The spent cartridge was still chambered in addition to three unspent rounds in the top fed magazine. All cartridges have engraved wording on them expressing transgender and anti-fascist ideology. An emergency trace has been submitted, and ATF SLC is working leads generated by the trace. The firearm and ammunition have been taken by the FBI for DNA analysis and fingerprint impressions. Upon completion of forensics, the firearm will be disassembled for additional importer information. Multiple people of interest have been contacted or detained because of eyewitness testimony and review of video footage. The primary suspect is yet to be identified ATF is assisting in the investigation with multiple other federal, state and local partners and the case is co-led by the FBI and Utah SBI.

Because the video has been abridged, I cannot find the section where he describes the suspect's vehicle, but other news outlets say it is a gray Dodge Challenger with no mention of model year. The manufacturer discontinued that lineup in 2023 so the range of models is from 1970 to 2023.

Bellingcat is an open source research community: emphasis on "open." That means many things, including the expectation that when we make a claim, we provide sources.

Apparently the shooter had contact with his dad, who either turned him in or told him to turn himself in. I've seen both explanation in news articles. That would explain how they found the parents' names and social media. I would say that in the present political environment all mentioning of "trans" should be avoided, since as you say its irrelevant, and most important: all it does is helping 'them' to frame trans people as the perpetrators. Ok I checked with my dad and he’s seen the press sprays with law enforcement and governor and tho he didn’t see the gov’s interview on CNN I described what he said (confirming a romantic relationship btw a trans roommate & the shooter) and he didn’t see any concern with that level of public discussion on the part of the governor. I agree that the official story about assembling and carrying the rifle doesn't make much sense. We are told that he walked to campus with the rifle (just the barrel, presumably?) hidden in his pant leg, which is why he was limping. But in the surveillance footage going up the stairs, his legs are bending and no barrel is visible anywhere. So evidently the rifle is disassembled but the barrel is ... elsewhere at this time. Or he assembled it, left it on the roof, and came back later? But I don't think that's alleged.

Regardless he eventually has an assembled rifle on the roof, fires a shot and begins running. He looks to be carrying something in the surveillance footage, but even in the grainy footage it doesn't look like a 4 foot long rifle with a scope mounted on it like the picture that was released. And I can't imagine even with only a little foot traffic that someone running around campus with a fully assembled rifle escapes notice. You can see multiple people walking less than 50 feet away even in the small surveillance snippet. Evidently the rifle was wrapped in a towel, but he wrapped it up securely while running across the roof, mounted scope and all? But it would make even less sense to disassemble it and then reassemble it to dump it. Just hard to square that with zero eyewitnesses being like 'oh yeah I saw a guy running around with a scoped rifle right after it happened"

I'd say for now your best bet is to sorta take it slow on this one, and on any "ones" that may follow. Part of the way that extremists radicalize the wider population is by making us all numb and immune to gratuitous violence, but also hate and anger and vitriol, online and off. It happened in Iraq, I saw it online and it was awful. Eventually people stop being shocked by the violence and start justifying it, or using it to justify their own "righteous" violence. Unless you've got a solid lead you're pursuing, or can think of something concrete that would change things that nobody else has come up with...please go pet your pets, or read a good book, or literally anything else. THe professionals and many many many others are on this, and we're gonna need as many of ya for the long haul as possible. Take care of your soul please ❤️

This other video makes it look much less complicated and it’s also more similar to the stock model of the alleged murder weapon. I would hope that someone with access to the weapon will be testing the feasibility of the scenario in the charging docs, for the sake of a fair trial. He does seem to mention in the video that you have to take out "a couple of screws" before you can separate barrel and stock. So unless Robinson removed the screws before shooting it would take more than a couple of seconds to take the gun apart.

In the Instagram video it takes 20 seconds to undo two screws. According to Wikipedia https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination_of_Charlie_Kirk#Assassination, Kirk was shot at 12:23 and the alleged assassin was seen running into the woods about a minute later. There’s a video from this NYT article, https://www.nytimes.com/2025/09/10/us/charlie-kirk-shooting-timeline-map.html, with a timestamp of 12:23:37 when the alleged gunman was filmed jumping off the roof.

We don’t know if the clock on the camera that caught him jumping off the roof was automatically or manually set. We don’t know exactly how many seconds after 12:23 the gun went off.

I think we’ve at least established that the gun could have been shortened/disassembled in under 30 seconds, but that leaves only a few seconds to get to the corner of the roof. According to most sources I could find (eg: https://runningforwellness.com/average-human-running-speeds/) the average man runs about 9MPH, which is about 13 feet per second.

Judging by this screenshot and the matching shot from the NYT article, it looks like he’d have to run at least 300 feet to get to the corner where he jumped off. At 13ft/sec that would take about 23 seconds.

If the clock on the video of him jumping off the roof matches the clock used to ascertain when the gun went off, that leaves 15 seconds or less to undo possibly two or more screws (assuming the shot was at exactly 12:23?!).

I haven’t seen proof the gun was in fact disassembled after firing. I have yet to see a video from after the shooting that clearly shows the state of the gun, as all such videos are extremely grainy. There’s an interesting convo about this in the other (disinfo) topic, though no citations for the point being made here #1417744307229687859 message

This is all a fun exercise in hypotheticals, interesting to see how it plays out in court.

Yeah averages are hard to use. You should be looking for the average speed for a male of roughly that age, and then try to adapt it based on what we can tell about tyler robinson’s physical fitness (which won’t be much). That’s the only way you can get even remotely close to a reasonable assumption when the margins are this small

Same way that the average person probably can’t actually do a single pull up, but when the suspect is a bodybuilder the chance goes up and when he’s a climber the chance gets even higher

My average pace for a 100m sprint is about 2 min/km (30 km/h)
My average pace for a 5K (a more normal “run”) is about 4:15 min/km (14 km/h)

From my memory, an “average” 100m sprint time for an ok fit young male who doesn’t go running should be 14-16 seconds (with people who don’t sport but are still physically active ranging more in the 16s)

One thing we know from this and from the reveal Trump made on Truth Social last night, pushing Bondi to prosecute senators he thinks wronged him is that the rule of law still stands when it comes to building cases that attorneys are willing to prosecute - the key factor being that they have to share evidence agreed upon with defense during discovery and if the prosecutors don’t have enough evidence to try a case, they typically will not do that.

So far there are only state charges made in this case, which are solely under the jurisdiction of the Utah County Attorney, and not - as many are assuming - under the control of the FBI. As I understand it the FBI has been assisting with local law enforcement with the investigation, which is common in cases such as these.
