Hi, do you have any source with the claim of American and Israeli warplanes flying together in Southern Syria other than an unknown twitter account?
An account that appears to be linked to Russian disinformation efforts as the following tweet mentions about the "Zelensky Regime" and uses an out of context picture

Dear subscribers and guests of the channel! There is every reason to believe that an assassination attempt was made on former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. On Sunday afternoon, Assad complained to his security about feeling unwell and having trouble breathing and asked for medical help. Almost immediately after the request, he began to cough violently and began to choke. Assad was given water and this helped to ease the attack a little, but normal breathing was still not restored, and headaches and stomach pains were added to this. By the time the medics arrived, the former Syrian president's condition was deteriorating. Representatives of the Russian leadership were promptly informed about Bashar al-Assad's condition. While the medics were providing Assad with first aid, an order was received to treat him at home whenever possible and not to place the "patient" in medical institutions. After first aid was provided, "reinforcements" arrived to the medics and a treatment ward was set up in Assad's apartment. As of Monday evening, according to the doctors treating him, Bashar al-Assad's condition is stable and he feels fine. The tests that were taken from the former Syrian president showed traces of exposure to a toxic substance in his body. As reported in the report to the Russian presidential aide Nikolai Patrushev, an investigation is underway, but it has not yet been possible to determine how Bashar al-Assad was exposed to the poison.
Reports suggest ousted Syrian president Bashar al-Assad was poisoned in Moscow. His condition has reportedly stabilized after medical intervention

Looks like the bomb hit an empty field about 20m from and slightly above the road, limiting the amount of shrapnel hitting the trek.
The bomb primarily kicked up a lot of dirt, leaving only a small crater (might indicate this being a drone munition) and luckily , at least according to the article, only a few injured civilians.
I guess that's the strongest way Turkey can say "fuck off" short of hitting the procession directly.
Is it still a war crime? Probably.
5 dead, 15 wounded. Let's not excuse suscpected war crimes dude
It could be a drone as the day before they shot down a Bayraktar TB2 in the area and there was lot of drone activity in the area, but they also used artillery so who knows, it's only speculation if they missed intentionally. But the death are proven (news link doxx the dead so I can't share)
Determining whether something is a war crime is the sort of thing international criminal lawyers do. It's not really something a layperson can do by reading a Wikipedia article
So let's please keep that sort of discussion out of the server. Otherwise it's an endless back and forth
alright, i wont call it a war crime then since im no lawyer, i just get heated up when people downplay attacks on civies, sorry
For sure -- and thanks for pointing out that there were fatalities and injures involved in this case so that it's clear for everyone reading this exchange
Here is an article with a statement by a lawyer union accusing Turkey of war crimes for this case.
https://hawarnews.com/en/jurists-turkish-occupation-commits-war-crimes-against-civiliansviolates-resolution-2254
"After decades of injustice and tyranny at the hands of the Baath regime and the Assad family, the Syrians celebrated this victory and historic achievement and prepared to rebuild Syria anew. However, the Turkish occupation and its mercenaries have been launching attacks on areas in north and East Syria, especially the Tishreen Dam, for about a month now, through continuous artillery shelling and airstrikes in order to occupy the dam and deprive the Syrian people of electricity and water, similar to what they did during the occupation of Serekaniye, and deprive the city of al-Hasakah, which includes millions of Syrian people with all its components, of drinking water.
On Wednesday, 8-1-2025, a convoy of civilians headed to the Tishreen Dam to stop the attacks on the dam, which was bombed by drones belonging to the Turkish occupation and its mercenaries, resulting in martyrs and wounded.
We confirm that targeting civilians It is a war crime, a crime against humanity, and a violation of all international covenants, charters, and norms, and a clear violation of UN Resolution 2,254 and the outcomes of the Aqaba Conference that adopted this resolution.
Accordingly, we appeal to the United Nations, all relevant international and human rights organizations, and the international coalition forces to intervene immediately to stop these attacks, deter Turkey and its mercenaries from their arbitrary and expansionist practices against the Syrian people and infrastructure, and preserve the sovereignty of the Syrian state.

For the middle source, the still of the alleged ISIS fighter iirc is from an attack on a farm in Latakia that allegedly was hiding Alawite officers. It was circulating widely around 10 December (you can find some example by reverse image search) and definitely has nothing to do with Hama.
You might be able to find the original person sharing - if it's a legitimate account that would be good to know since these videos have been so widely shared that their context is effectively lost

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that he was demanding the “complete demilitarization” of southern Syria, a shock announcement that his defense minister described as a “new policy” and that appeared to formalize Israel’s recent expansion into Syrian territory.
In a speech to Israeli military cadets, he said the Israel Defense Forces will remain inside Syria “indefinitely to protect our settlements and neutralize any threat.”
“Let it be clear — we will not allow HTS forces or the New Syrian Army to enter the area south of Damascus,” he said, referring to Hayʼat Tahrir al-Sham, the militant group presiding over Syria’s transition. “We demand the complete demilitarization of southern Syria in the Quneitra, Daraa and Suwayda provinces from the forces of the new regime.”

This video is circulating with people saying it's footage of current Syrian gov forces dropping barrel bombs on Alawite areas...but even I, not at all a munitions expert, can see they're not barrel bombs. In response to another tweet, someone wrote that this is a video from a month ago, from Tiktok, but I haven't been able to dig up the original, so not sure how true that is. (That it's horizontal suggests it wasn't made in TikTok, though?) https://x.com/EyesOnSouth1/status/1898054085288296648
Geolocation of the video: https://x.com/putintintin1/status/1898024285907619992 (with a reply pointing out that whatever they're dropping would likely land in the water anyway)
They are Russian depth charges. I haven't had time to verify variant/model, but here's a RBG-25* (some sources incorrectly said this was a RGB-60 in photos) for reference. Russia has used them in Ukraine as rocket artillery as they are rocket propelled and some have proximity or impact fuzing.
Here's the tweet saying (in Arabic) it's an old video, from TikTok (not "tuk-tuk" as Google Translate would have it!) https://x.com/Youssef1Yusuf/status/1898022898859737269

I've not been plugged in for a while, trying to follow the news. It appears that on FB, X and Telegram, accounts associated with HTS are celebrsting some kind of effort to stamp out what they claim are Assad-aligned Alawite strongholds, and many reports and videos of unarmed men being gathered, abused and executed. I saw posts and images of several massacres and mass executions. You simply have to search. But I could not find news reports answering the question of why the new Syrian regime chose now to do it - were they waiting for military, political or diplomatic preparedness?
In this story, an anonymous "security source" speaking to SANA claims the gov action is in response to Alawites assassinating security forces, and attributes the civilian deaths to "large, disorganized groups of people." Obviously take all with a grain of salt! (and warning: main pic on story when you click through is of dead bodies.) https://www.alhurra.com/syria/2025/03/07/أسقط-القناع-وزير-الدفاع-الإسرائيلي-يعلق-أحداث-الساحل-السوري
I also was not really paying attention recently, so no idea if/when security forces were killed by Alawites recently. (I remember issues a couple of months ago only, but I don't think it's that.)
BTW, interesting background story on al-Sharaa (helpful for me, who long ago gave up on following all the factional business in the Syria war). https://archive.ph/kcdYB

The official adds that Israel has made it clear that preventing any such activity “is the responsibility of the government in Damascus. Any activity that endangers Israel will threaten the rule of [Syrian President Ahmed] al-Sharaa.”

@daring prawn i talk with syria researchers tooo adn they have the same assessment
@daring prawn what happened in the coast is presented as gov affiliated militias targeting Alewite civilians as such which is not what happened
This is still as bad as ever. Indeed the article on the recent massacres in Western Syria is the worst I've ever seen it. 10,000 words and not a single suggestion that former Assad militias also killed civilians.

The military is shuttering three of its eight small operating bases in the country’s northeast, reducing troop levels to about 1,400 from 2,000, two senior U.S. officials said.
After 60 days, the officials said, American commanders will assess whether to make additional cuts. Commanders have recommended keeping at least 500 U.S. troops in Syria, one of the officials said.

SWIR satellite footage from Tuesday indicates the extent of the current conflict in as-Suwayda in Syria between Bedouin, Syrian and Druze forces.
There are fires coming from the North-Western part of as-Suwayda, near address PGGX+JH8, As Suwayda, Syrien. Also a lot of fires in central.

Ehm, how do you get to that from this image?
I'm not quite familiar with SWIR imagery and i suppose, many people on this server aren't either.
smoke, fire
Older images over the region before conflict does not show any such indications.
Does anyone have any material on the overall state of Syria/Israel relations, and any indications as to Israels ultimate goals. Bonus if there's info on what's happening with the Syrian Government and the Druze community?
Currently, much discourse in Arabic has to do with a theory (also voiced by some Turkish commentators and members of government) that Israel seeks to establish a "David's corridor", that is to say they want pro-Israel Druze control over the south of Damascus and a pathway to the Kurds in the north east as a strategy to contain the Sunni Arab dominated regions and keep Syria fragmented. It's been around for quite a while but no clear evidence I've seen that it is an official Israel-US policy. Especially given Türkiye and Iraqi's concerns that Israel wants to arm Kurdish separatists across the region. Proponents of the theory feel more and more vindicated as Israel's involvement in southern Syria intensifies.

Here is a useful two-part piece analyzing the relationship from April: https://levant24.com/articles/2025/04/israels-post-assad-strategy-in-syria-the-southern-push-and-its-aims/
https://levant24.com/articles/2025/04/israels-post-assad-strategy-in-syria-blowback-turkey-and-the-regional-chessboard/
(It is from a pro-Damascus perspective).
In the first of a two-part analysis, Obayda Amer Ghadban — a graduate student of Political Science at Marmara University — examines Israel's swift and aggressive moves into Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.
The Druze were one of the few groups willing to work with Jews in the region during and after the Holocaust. They fought alongside them in '48 to establish the modern state of Israel after peace talks with Palestine fell apart. This bond has lasted to this day, with Druze making up a disproportionate number of IDF volunteers. There are those significant factions in Netanyahu's coalition who want to use this as an excuse to annex the Druze part of Syria. Notably, most Druze support this. Many Israelis at least think that the state of Israel owes it's existence in part to the Druze. Most of today's Israeli-Druze population can trace its roots back to '67 after Syria joined the war against Israel

It may cause confusion in this particular context to refer to "the Druze" as one group. A ley issue is that Syrian Druze are torn between Syria's new government and Israeli Druze. A major Druze community also exists in Lebanon, publicly opposing Israeli involvement and what they call "sedition" against Damascus.

Agreed. There are like 3 main Druze factions. The biggest wants intervention and independence, but the other two are pro being-absorbed-by-Syria
As goes for most groups, especially in the Middle East, people are not a monolith
3 main in Syria I should say lol
I dont want to post it here unnecessarily because of the shocking contents, but have you guys seen the video about the guys being forced to jump of a building? Im trying to figure out if it is real and recent.
It's not the most twisted thing I've seen done against Druze en masse, but it is up there. Like the Kurds, there are reasons they hesitate to give up their arms
I saw it but also didn't know how to check if it is recent or from a while ago. In the video nothing is said that indicates who the victims are or their sect. The perpetrators' takbir at the end also doesn't narrow down which faction they may be (from the Sunni mujahid groups). There could be a chance of geolocation based on the balcony view. I've seen a bunch of pro-gov Syrian commentators claim the men forced to jump were captured snipers, but zero evidence of that, plus we saw mass executions of unarmed civilians in Alawite-majority regions by similar groups.
It seems the men murdered were identified and it was indeed from the recent fighting. (Warning, video is also in link.)

I'm short on time today so I can't do this myself, but to check if a video has circulated online previously, take a screenshot of the first frame and do a Google image search
First time I tried that I got a strange error "searches for people are limited" or something like that. Now it works and video appears to be from this week for sure.
That is strange indeed for a picture of a doorway
I also got results from today and yesterday only.
Which is not 100% conclusive that it is new, but an indication.
Yeah I tried that. Oldest match was from July 18th.

A US envoy doubled down on Washington’s support for the new government in Syria, saying Monday there is no Plan B to working with the current authorities to unite the country still reeling from a nearly 14-year civil war and now wracked by a new outbreak of sectarian violence. He took a critical tone toward Israel’s recent intervention in Syria, calling it poorly timed and saying that it complicated efforts to stabilize the region.

Hi! I'm deleting this as per our #rules against sharing graphic content
There are some voices in DC, a few particular members of the Kurdish lobby and the Israel lobby, who explicitly advocate for a Israel-Druze-Kurdish corridor through southern Syria. For instance, an article published by pro-Israel think tank Mid East Forum yesterday explicitly advocates for this:
https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2025/jul/23/us-must-support-freedom-corridor-kurds-druze/
It appears to clash with the position taken by Trump's Special Envoy to Syria.
Everyone here, doctors, nurses, volunteers say the same thing.
That last Wednesday evening, it was Syrian government troops targeting the Druze religious community who came to the hospital and carried out the killings.
https://x.com/suwayda24/status/1948299385105756310
Pro-government or anti-Druze sectarian Syrians are claiming that the presence of a handful of dead security force members at the hospital are evidence it was a clash or committed by Druze, or going so far as to claim it was Druze dressed up as security forces committing a flase flag massacre of Druze. But the preponderance of testimony from the hospital states that it was government-affiliated forces.
The question continues to be whether Damascus is incapable of controlling armed factions, or if it is simply maintaining plausible deniability while allowing them a free hand to crush others sects.

writeups on the recent Syrian election
The authorities resorted to an indirect voting system rather than universal suffrage, alluding to a lack of reliable population data following the war …
Sunday’s vote saw around 6,000 members of regional electoral colleges choose candidates from preapproved lists, part of a process to produce nearly two-thirds of the new 210-seat body. President Ahmed al-Sharaa will later select the remaining third.
Citing security and political reasons, authorities postponed the vote in areas outside government control, including Kurdish-held parts of Syria’s north and northeast, as well as the province of Suwayda, held by the Druze minority. Those suspensions left 21 seats empty.

There is no official constitutional court website or online archive of decisions in Syria. The practical avenue for any specific ruling is offline requests through Damascus courts/ministry of justice or local counsel, and occasional mentions in the official newspapers!

Syria’s sanctions haven’t all been lifted according to https://www.belfercenter.org/research-analysis/what-lifting-us-sanctions-means-syrias-transition
- Does the repeal mean all sanctions on Syria are lifted?
Not all. The repeal of the Caesar Act removes a central component of the U.S. sanctions framework, but it does not amount to a full lifting of sanctions yet.
Syria remains designated by the United States as a State Sponsor of Terrorism, a status that carries significant legal and financial restrictions, particularly in sensitive sectors and access to the international financial system. This designation will likely be removed within the next few weeks.
but the Caesar act has been repealed as of few days ago (source: https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/senate-bill/2296/text)
Which has been one of the most restrictive ones out there (source: https://www.belfercenter.org/research-analysis/what-lifting-us-sanctions-means-syrias-transition)
- What exactly changed with the repeal of the Caesar Act?
The repeal of the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act removes one of the most restrictive and uncertainty-producing elements of the U.S. sanctions framework on Syria. Legally, it ends the authorities that allowed for broad secondary sanctions on non-U.S. individuals, companies, and financial institutions engaging with Syria. Politically, it signals a recalibration in U.S. policy toward engagement and economic stabilization rather than prolonged isolation.
There isnt an official snap back mechanism (source: https://www.belfercenter.org/research-analysis/what-lifting-us-sanctions-means-syrias-transition)
- Is there a snapback mechanism?
No. The repeal of the Caesar Act does not include an automatic “snapback” mechanism that would reinstate its sanctions if specific conditions are not met.
Instead, the current framework relies on oversight and reporting, not automatic reimposition.
Its important to note that other sanctions were lifted beforehand (source: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/12/19/world/middleeast/syria-trump-repeal-sanctions-caesar-act.html)

Al Jazeera English is providing live updates
Summary/Update from Phil Stewart, national security reporter for Reuters:
(Reuters) - Syrian government troops tightened their grip across a swathe of northern and eastern territory on Monday after it was abruptly abandoned by Kurdish forces in a dramatic shift that has consolidated President Ahmed al-Sharaa's rule.
A day after the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, once the main U.S. ally in Syria, agreed to quit large areas under a ceasefire, the sides reported new clashes. The Syrian army said "a number of" Islamic State militants had escaped a prison that had been under SDF control in the eastern city of Shaddadi, accusing the SDF of releasing them.
The SDF said it had lost control of the prison following an attack by government fighters. The Syrian army denied attacking the jail and said its forces would work to secure the prison and re-arrest the escapees.
The SDF said Shaddadi prison had held thousands of militants. The army did not say how many IS detainees had fled.
