The next step in an interview with a small-mid size ML company is a take home project that you get a week to complete. The head of ML(who conducted the interview) reached out to me asking when I would like to start the assignment. All of my final projects are due next week Monday through Wednesday, so I’m thinking of asking to start on Thursday, so I can focus on the take-home assessment project and make it as good as possible.
Do you guys think that’s too long? The interview was yesterday. I don’t think I’d actually take a full week to complete it, so I could ask to start earlier. Not sure what to do

This may not be the best place to talk about this especially since this recruiting game works great for a lot of you here but do people feel like this entire process is just so heartless? Its like you are just stripped of your humanity from step one and reduced to your ability to solve arbitrary challenges or perform on a specific day with kind of random metrics
I understand there is a need to choose based on technical expertise so I don't expect hiring purely on personality in any way. But, the testing just goes about the wrong way both with the challenges used and the metrics used to judge performance
Yeah, that's fair and tbh I don't really have a solution for how this process should work. Obviously, the judgment of your performance does come down to the interviewer's subjective feedback if you have candidates who meet the correctness and efficiency metrics. The margins just feel so thin at times and from our perspective you just don't know what/how to do better sometimes and that can be crushing
I know it sounds like me complaining and tbf it is to some extent but this process is really making me question the humanity of this industry as a whole (I know this is probably the same case for other industries as well so there may be no point in thinking about this at all)
And, I also wanted to mention that the people for which this system works will continue to be woefully ignorant (and that includes me) about what it is like for people who are left behind by such a system and won't really try to imagine and push for a better system

Tbh I think that cs/swe is one of the more merit-based fields
Yes the system isn't perfect, but I feel like it's definitely more achievable for someone who comes from a lower class background and who doesn't go to a top school to land top internships than other majors
Altho I do think the current system has flaws
But I can't think of a solution to it that doesn't have failings in it's own way
One solution often brought up is project-based testing, but I think that is subject to even more bias than leetcode style questions
Some people suggest just testing on trivia, but I feel like that would just skew towards people who have connections or get interviews earlier in the cycle.
