In UK (London) non-tech companies usually pay between £35-40k, in finance you’ll mostly be at £50-70k and for faang £70-100k

#

I think they’re fine compared to col, 35k is enough to rent a room somewhat centrally and live a decent life but you won’t be saving much

#

In finance, trading or big tech you’ll be chilling for sure. And there’s lots of finance jobs in London

#

Yeah UK salaries are very similar to Canada

#

Yeah I do, but probably not soon

#

Both of our major political parties oppose rejoining so it won’t be for a while

im not saying you'll be renting a high rise penthouse in central london lmao

#

i said a room "somewhat centrally", which 35k is definitely enough for

#

that sounds very out of touch

#

rooms can be found in zone 2 for like £800

#

i mean fair enough if you dont wanna live there on less than 50k but to say that less than that is just "surviving" is wild

#

less than 30 is where you really have to start worrying lol

#

if you want your own place then thats a fair baseline

rare prairie
rare prairie
#

And in zone 2 that typically runs you for 2k rent

#

So you should need 5-6k post tax to afford comfortably

#

Aka 80-100k TC

#

If you're making less than that you aren't earning enough to live in z2 london

remote zinc
#

The London zone system reminds me of the movie “In time” with Justin Timberlake 😂

drowsy bane

rare prairie

Take camden for instance. Close to west end where most london tech jobs are. Zone 2. Average rent is 2k. In order to comfortably afford 2k rent you should be making 6k post tax with the rule rent = 33% of income

drowsy bane

rare prairie
drowsy bane
#

your words not mine

rare prairie
#

Your argument is so weak you have to put words into my point

rare prairie
#

You will be living paycheck to paycheck on 60k while raisingi a family

rare prairie
#

Your life will be more or less identical

#

Your life doesn't change in terms of comfort until 45k

#

And you aren't at a normal and healthy standard of living as a single bachelor until 60k

#

At 100k you can relax a bit, rent out somewhere nice, go on holidays and vacations, but you're still too poor to do normal things like save up for a house down payment or pay off your loans in comfort

#

You only reach a normal middle class standard if you're a sole earner at 150k or so

#

Especially as these are all pre tax and not post tax incomes

#

So you can slash them even further

#

I stand by what I originally said

#

Capitalism has lied to you

#

I have a friend in america, 4 YoE facebook frontend team

#

He owns 3 houses at 29

#

That's normal for a dev

#

He can just stop working and relax

#

If he rents them out he gets what? 7-8k a year post tax? And he can comfortably pay off any things such as heater replacements or repair costs because he has >100k in his account

#

All he had to do was work at FAANG for 5 years in the states

#

He's not even special. He was a physics major

#

He only bothered with tech later on

#

This is normal

#

If you genuinely majored CS, interned at top tier places, have some amount of engineering skill (you don't need that much, what passes for quality code at FAANG places is hilariously low), and you can solve meds reliably in 25-30 minutes, your american counterpart will be earning well north of 200k a few years in

#

Usually on 70K as a minimum before graduating, often more

#

Take your british counterpart. They're on 40k if they're lucky, and 75k a few years in if they did unbelievaly great

#

Short of places with low headcount like HRT or Citadel, you aren't making american money here

Interned at a well known quant fund then the recession happened 😂

#

Well it depends. Why do you want to do a masters?

#

IMO masters make sense when

  1. You want to use university name to leverage higher paying jobs
  2. You want to break into a field in CS that needs a masters like ML / Robotics
  3. You want to do a PhD
#

Quant dev or quant analyst?

remote zinc
rare prairie
#

Quant dev is just typical LC, but a bit harder than normal. Sometimes they throw in CS fundamentals and some basic math to be cruel, but generally it's no different from FAANG interviews if you were particularly unlucky

#

Honestly, it depends on the firm greatly

#

I'd never pass HRT if I'm being frank lmao

#

But my old employer just asked a few LC meds and CS fundamentals then an applied programming exercise

#

Medium in 25 minutes regardless of topic is the golden standard

#

We had some folks who could medium in 15 / hard in 30, but thats if you want to be surefire

#

If you can't find a FT going back to school is a good option, but even a low paying tech job > masters

#

As long as you're staying close to writing software

#

We had people from all kinds of weird companies in my old employer. Quant Engineering positions aren't as gated as status as people think

#

IMO that's only true at really fancy places like Tower Research or HRT or something

#

If you're good at engineering you stand a decent shot at getting into one

#

What kind of masters program are you looking at?

#

Hedge fund SWE -> Quant fund SWE is well tracked exit path

But as I read, if it’s under a certain sum you pay 0 taxes

remote zinc
# stuck dome But as I read, if it’s under a certain sum you pay 0 taxes

Really? I mean there is a so called tax free allowance but this only means if you total annual salary is below X (maybe 13k) you don’t pay taxes at all. I assume you total annual will be way way way more than that 😂

I would actually go to a pro about this because it’s better to get once good help than 100000 shitty help with false information 😂

#

Especially when bonus is like 80k or more

stuck dome
#

Yea indeed that annual allowance is around 13k

#

But are salary and bonuses taxed together?

#

Because I know companies that give like 5-10k sign-on bonus

#

And I thought that means the person who accepts this kind of offer will get the full untaxed sign on bonus

#

This is just out of curiosity. In my case anyway I will just go with whatever Jane wants. I am not picky. But I was talking with friends from other companies and I wanted to know about how much will they actually get hehe 😂

drowsy bane
#

So if someone makes like 50k + 20k bonus they are in the tax bracket for 70k

remote zinc
#

Hahaha is it possible to get the sign on bonus in one tax year (aka last year) and then start the job in the next tax year (aka this Mai) 😂

#

So if you never worked in the UK you get more out of the sign on and then start work normally in Mai 😂

remote zinc

Doesn’t the company takes care of that … to be taxed only for the sum you’re actually paid?

Hey, I need some help evaluating this offer I got.

I interviewed with a US Cloud SaaS company and they offered me 73k + 17k in RSUs (issued quarterly, vesting period 4 y) that will be part of my salary indefinitely as long as you show good performance. So the RSUs are not guaranteed and only useful four years later. The rest of their terms like PTO, insurance and benefits seem to be doing the bare minimum.

I currently make about 78k working 36hrs and I've been looking for a job that would allow me to work 40. Effectively my 40-hr base would be 85k already. Frankly I get 10 more days of PTO in my current job.

I am a senior ML Engineer with 5 yoe + 2 years of full-time internships, this feels like a deliberate lowball. Am I supposed to be negotiating my way up?

add saarland to the list. sneaky little place, but comparable to most of top places in EU if you are into research. Another great university is university of tuebingen (top research into ML, big industrial+academic colabs)
TUM, EPFL, ETH, KTH, TU Delft
use csrankings.com and search for the area of research you are going to persue. Then select the EU region and you will have universities ranked from doing most research to least.

Hello everyone! I'm looking for information about companies in the EU that are hiring and offer visa sponsorship for non-EU citizens. Does anyone have a list or know of companies that provide work visa sponsorship? I'm particularly interested in companies with established sponsorship policies. 🇬🇧 For summer interns in London!
Hi! Together with two other Google interns, we've found a great apartment to share among four people, but we're still looking for one more person. The lease is expected to start in the first two weeks of July and lasts for 3 months. The landlord only rents to complete groups of four, so it's important to commit for the entire period.
If you're interested, send me a message!

It went good, he asked “Most recent one time Amazon customer”. If you can do and understand lru cache easily, then should be able to adapt a solution

I think the big factor for me was that I was constantly talking and explaining my algorithmic thought process

Also tried to be too clever at start and mentioned a heap solution that was overly complex. He helped me by asking me to do brute force in my head using lists and then optimise

Hey, can you guys help me with these questions

  1. What roles should I especially target, im assuming Databases and DevOps

  2. I have worked with DevOps projects but using amazon's internal pipelines and tools, not the general docker and microservices stuff. Is it still a good fit based on my resume.

  3. If I get an offer for a random no renown internship, should I take it or keep AWS as my last place of work and dedicate my time completely to big tech prep and applications?

  4. I am very interested in the kind of work Oracle's database teams are doing, is it wise to target a very particular role/company? (I got to Oracle's final round and got rejected like 3-4 months back so will have to see what's the cooldown there)

  5. My team during AWS internship was working on an open source github repository, so i'm still tinkering around with some stuff here and there to see where I can continue making open source contributions purely out of interest to it (I know the project very well and am well connected in the community), do you think its a waste of time?

I'm working on doing remote writing right now for some money. I write articles like: https://medium.com/p/9763c06eb21c You can help me by clicking it if you want and sign up to read or scroll too. The website has lots of software engineering and design post and people so networking on the website helps to get visibility in Silicon Valley and San Francisco Bay Are as well. The job market for CS engineering is not looking so good for me and I've been feeling so lost. It's annoying. I'd love the support to help me with the remote writing online revenue so I could afford more things + keep afloat :) Thank you. My DMs are open for anyone who wants to work on career building or sharing opportunity too.

Hello, I have been doing remote writing alongside remote software engineering/cs roles since the engineering roles are kind of shaky right now. I launched a group called Potato Kindness, just to encourage writers to share stories on kindness and help the world be a better place. Writers do get paid on monetization similar to YouTube, by views and read. I will leave a link here if anyone is interested in doing this with some of their time in the week, maybe once a week, 1 hour or so, etc. to supplement their income(s) in this kind of labor market. There are also a lot of engineers, CEO, and big companies like Google/Apple/Meta who have teams on the website blogging about their technical engineering, workplace culture, and more so it is one other way to network and get conversations or visibility and engagement with companies. I'm happy to accept DMs too if anyone has questions. The guidelines are all here: https://medium.com/potato-kindness/potato-kindness-accepting-new-and-experienced-talented-writers-c7e102208473 I hope everyone had a great Merry Christmas and new goals entering into 2026 soon.

Hey everyone! I recently wrapped up the recruitment season with offers from Dropbox and Visa, and I passed the technical bar at Google (currently in Team Match). I also interviewed with companies like IBM and Dolby.

I prepped via the Google Student Mentoring Program, paid coaching with Google engineers, and heavy LeetCode grinding, so I know exactly what top US companies are looking for right now.

I’m offering Mock Interviews (DSA & Behavioral) specifically for American tech companies at EU student-friendly prices. This way, you’ll know exactly what to expect, what to change, and how to improve.

✨ 6–10 AM EDT: Tech Morning Study Group ✨

Hi! I’m a Computer Engineering student doing a software engineering internship, currently practicing DSA/LeetCode for technical interviews.

I started a small morning study group focused on routine and accountability. Many study groups are casual and people drop in and out. This group is different. Members commit to a fixed daily time slot and show up consistently. Inactive members are removed so the group stays reliable.

Format

  • 6–10 AM EDT daily
  • 50/10 Pomodoro in Discord voice chat (camera off)
  • University students or early-career people preparing for tech interviews
  • Prefer similar time zones (Toronto, New York, etc.)
  • Sessions scheduled and attendance tracked with a bot
  • Small, respectful, long-term group

If interested, DM me with:

  • Age / Major or Industry
  • Time zone
  • What you're currently studying
  • Which time slot (6–7 / 7–8 / 8–9 / 9–10) you can attend consistently

Hey everyone,

I'm a full-stack developer from Europe with strong low-level background and two real shipped products.

From 2019 to 2024 I spent 5 years deep in C++, C, and Assembly - mainly gamehacking, web-based loaders, custom ImGui UIs, subscription forums, and advanced reverse engineering. Built a ton of internal tools and systems that had to be fast, stable, and undetectable.

Now I ship modern web3 stuff:

Swiftz (https://swiftz-xi.vercel.app Temporary Domain)

  • Non-custodial crypto payment infrastructure (BTC, ETH, SOL, USDT)
  • Dashboard, simple API, embeddable payment buttons, HMAC-signed webhooks
  • Real on-chain verification via RPC nodes, live countdown + status
  • Funds go straight to merchant’s wallet, monthly batch fee collection
  • Built with Next.js 15 (App Router), Supabase + RLS, Vercel + cron jobs

Archvly (https://archvly.com)

  • Full clothing marketplace with messaging, payments, refunds, disputes
  • Brand-aware AI legit check - 99% accuracy tested on 20 listings (half were tricky non-obvious fakes)

Daily stack: Next.js 15, Supabase (auth + DB with RLS), Vercel, Solidity, RPC nodes.

Currently looking for freelance, contract or full-time opportunities - remote preferred, Europe timezones are a plus.

Especially interested in:

  • Web3 / crypto projects
  • Marketplaces or SaaS platforms
  • Anything combining modern web with low-level / performance work

If you need a dev who can go from reverse engineering to production React + smart contracts, hit me up.

Live projects:
→ Swiftz: https://swiftz-xi.vercel.app Temporary Domain
→ Archvly: https://archvly.com

Happy to share GitHub, more details or jump on a call.

Thanks!
