What i think the lore of the monkeyes are: starting at the beginning of the basement update, some monkeys had found some strange creatures on a foreign planet, they had taken them and turned them smaller with newly discovered shrinking capabilities so they could run test on them, going to the christmas update, monkus (aka krampus) had broken them out, the shards that where seen on the monkeyebosses in ghost reactor where most likely used to grow them back to their original state and revert the shrinking. Going to today's live event, the monster that we saw was most likely the queen or "hivemind" of the foreign species.

The reason the hivemind came to our planet was to retrieve the monkeyes that were trapped, I belive when the monkeyes where shrunk, their connection to the hivemind was severd, when they turned big, they regained their connection to the hivemind. That is the reason it went underground. To find the monkeyes. Another point I want to make was the fact that the monkeyes could have been more important than just some of their species, I belive that they were "offspring" of the hivemind, the moon from the last halloween update might have been the monkeye searching for its offspring from planet to planet, however, they could not find anything since the small monkeyes connection was severd.
