I feel they are newer players that don't understand the enhancing feature of artifacts. This has become apparent from the GF quests. Obviously they are a number of ways to do Artifacts, but i wanted to post how i'm doing it so newer players understand the function.

So for those wondering why blue artifacts are important to get 5 stars, here's the reason.

As you can see, to begin getting to lvl 4 then 5 star on purple you need excess lvl 5 star duplicate shards from blue

For gold you need lvl 5 star excess purple shards.

I have only upgrade stars for the hp blue artifacts... did a few of the others (training and infirm speed for GF). The larger the pool of lvl 5 blue artifacts, the higher the likelihood of getting the excess shards.

Generally the priority is

ATK/ATK
ATK/HP
HP
OTHER (Training/infirm/travel speed)

No harm in levelling up the gold artifacts with the books while you are waiting on the duplicates / brushes as they provide the best stats overall but you then want the stars to multiply the stats.

Tried to group it to make it easier to also check off what you got

This is the next step from the original I sent before you will be able to click on an item it will take you to this page. Where you can see how many books and brooms and artifacts it will take to upgrade that item.

Then finally it will have this chart with each of the stats that that artifact has broken down by the amount of levels you’ve done in the amount of stars you’ve done so you could see which upgrades will get you better results faster to the troop type you want.

Well you need a few blues maxed to max the purples and a few purples maxed to max the golds and a few golds maxed to max the golds

Unless you’re a rally lead I wouldn’t recommend just opening all the chests to unlock new artifacts. I’d save all the regular artifact coins for GF task and then unlock as I go. (Also save the brushes and books for the GF task) Wouldn’t recommend upgrading any artifacts that don’t give army stats either.
The royal coins, since there’s 3 different ones I’d collect and spend all at once on which ones I specifically want. I’d try to get on the leaderboard because those extra tomes, books and speeds are a nice addition.

Don't think about the fury ones... as f2p you'll rarely be in fury

Personally I would recommend spending it on the training and merging speeds. As f2p your stats don't matter, you won't win anyway. Just make it as cheap as possible to go hell events and train troops

Where do I find generic artifact shards?

Once you upgrade artefact to 5 stars all other shards of said artefact (both you have and you receive in future) are converted into generic shards of corresponding grade(colour)
