There are 4 different war gear set. Mix (for defense or holding wonders) and 3 blast gear used when you send one type of troop (cavarly, infantry, ranged).
Since you are f2p and it will be harder to work on all the different gear at the same time you should focus your Mix set.

I’d focus on gear then. MM until you get gear to purple. Then labyrinth and Tycoon away for golds. I’d recommend saving up 3-5 months of your budget and unlocking elite labyrinth. So that’s $175 in one go. I recommend getting the $5,20,50 & 100 material madness to unlock elite lab. Each elite lab hit gives you 11* the rewards, great way to get ultra rare mats. Also tycoon is the best way to get halos for cups and venoms for helm.

If it's a solo trap, you can check out some solo trap legends like billythetrap. Look at his account overview. As a range front he Mainly focused on range and cav, he never even put inf talents, instead he put them in training...but I'm sure that you're putting talents in all three troop types, so you can focus your mix gear more on range/cav and less on inf.

Damm, miss those solo trap YouTubers , Billythetrap, red john doe and Realmythictrap. But Billy was my fav taking massive GBs with the grade of his gear he had. Most solo traps on YT trap noodles and it's not even fun watching

If you're considering 4th fam slot, first look at your familiars. Do you have enough fams maxed and ready to even make good use of a 4th slot?

Bigger guilds will accept you if you have sigils. Even if only a f2p level helm Sigil, it gives you more value.

Having 4th fam open makes you stronger to solo things or kill darknests (but only if you have the familiars to use).

So decide if you prefer to boost your solo attack or gain the passive stats and be a higher value to the guild

I will have mix talents and have mix gear but would it not be better to boost the Atk stat of the frontline I sit in

You're not entirely wrong. Boots are a good call and the army HP will be a big boost. The standard advice recommending the inf boots is because they balance better on mix sets.

If you can afford it, the range chest piece is even better. Though more costly.

Being food positive isn't such a benefit if you're actively trapping and can't sit with the armour on though
