For real though it's better to spend some time in the forge. Learn all the pieces. Take some time to write up lists of best items and the material costs so you can weigh pros and cons of realistically achievable sets. And then you get to know what everything is so when someone's marching at you, you recognise what the gear is at a glance

Lore Weaver is useful without being maxed, for certain things.
As a new player, better to invest in the packs aimed at New players, like the A New Adventure that has witch doll and petit devil, and the Great Start pack with Big Guy. If you're planning on spending, invest early on those - will give you a huge boost that's useful as a beginner and pointless later on (but you got the heroes at least green or blue at that point and they have good passive boosts for construction and research, and helpful in Colo).
If you want to pick one hero that you get all the way to gold, the cheapest/best choice is usually songstress of the sea or lore.
