Range Phalanx is generally preferable if you're able to do it as your cav will fall slap bang onto all 4 front enemy inf squads, you might take a bit more damage though. It wont be a crazy different either way though as you'll be taking out the infantry faster and thus they're doing less damage over time.

Inf phal will prevent any counters though, but the other enemy troops will be able to plink away at your inf either way. The results end up fairly similar, but I'd go with range phal.

The wedges don't matter so much, they're mainly for when you're taking a terrible hit that you know you can't take and you want it to hit a 2nd troop type.
