Add up how many manes you will need to get those pieces to gold or mythic, and then calculate how much that will cost. If you didn't realise the investment will probably be 1000s and you aren't willing to go that far, save your money and don't buy champ packs.
And yeah, forget "working on might" - it's an odd thing to say anyhow. I'm guessing you actually mean troop might, because might comes from research, buildings, heroes, familiars, quests as well as troops, and you grow all of those organically anyhow. Don't waste on speeding out a load of troops before you have T4. They're just meat for the slaughter.

Phalanx is better than wedge when you are able to counter. Yes if you get countered wedge is better, and thats why people go offline in wedge usually.
Once you lose half your front squad in a wedge it retargets to the second squad, unless the attacker also wedged their main troops- then it behaves more like a phalanx.
Correct me if I'm wrong on that last bit, was something someone told me and I only tested it in a DN
