The x68k is so cool, and may not be on everyone's radar. Creating a thread to give it a space of it's own. Hopefully we can use our combined energy in this thread to conjure someone to merge the current (and future) Puu-san updates.

amber hemlock
#

Yeah, that would be great. But i really crave direct video support for this core. I hope it's doable at some point.

smoky sail
#

love that this got it's own thread, thanks. i would really love to see the x68k core get to a point where it can be a full replacement for the original hardware

icy shuttle
#

That would be killer. I was surprised to hear that not all of Puu-san’s changes from last year weren’t merged into the core yet. It’s a process. Put-san’s core works in mister, but it’s 800x600 and doesn’t have a lot of mister features.

#

Had to fix the date 🙂

amber hemlock
#

Yeah, the keyboard changes are good. Kyukyoku Tiger e.g. is playable now.

thorny tree
#

One with d88 floppy only
And the other with xdf floppy only

icy shuttle
# thorny tree There is two versions of Puu san core

I grabbed this one from the mister forums thread (someone there compiled it). I could compile both versions if folks would find that useful (working on a project right now that uses xdfs so being able to mount them directly, rather than converting them to d88, would be helpful)

Yep, HDF is the way to go. For software emulators there is even something better. I hope this will work in Mister too at some point (support of HDS files)

Can’t be specific but there’s a 0Mhz style pack for the X68000 archived out there. Don’t want to steal @slender wave thunder, he was trying to post about it.

icy shuttle
#

There will be a new (updated) pack soon

#

that pack is the old pack. the amiga vision folks aren’t involved with it’s creation. but some folks are working on a new one 🙂

#

(with more games)

trail cypress
#

Is this new, I didn't know about it.

foggy pawn
#

Neither did I but there's a new cool updated pack coming soon, thanks for the info @icy shuttle !

icy shuttle
#

its the same pack that has been available

foggy pawn
#

that makes a ton of sense

#

very cool of him to do that in the interim

icy shuttle
#

Hoping to have the new pack ready soon. Then we want feedback from folks about stuff worth adding (I think we have added a dozen or so new games)

#

Limi is going to whip something up for the new pack once it’s ready

Converting disk games to HDF is fun and exciting work SuperScam

Did you see the 0Mhz style pack I posted about?

@river mango I'm losing my mind. What magical incantation lets me play Kyuukyoku Tiger on the new core

amber hemlock
#

AltGr iirc

icy shuttle
#

No dice. Wonder if I have the right keyboard

amber hemlock
#

Have you selected the US Keyboard in the core?

icy shuttle
#

Oh I figured it was the 2nd JP keyboard. let me try that

amber hemlock
#

I don't even use a full keyboard, just a Rii mini.

icy shuttle
#

ha, nice Jack

#

thank you!

#

same 🙂

#

@eager yacht Can you set keyboard in the MGL?

amber hemlock
#

I wonder though, where on that Rii we can find the Sharp "Help" key.

icy shuttle
#

does yours have a mouse pad?

amber hemlock
#

Yes

icy shuttle
#

because you can open the virtual keyboard by right clicking

#

might have to click twice

amber hemlock
#

This doesn't work properly most of the time. At least here

icy shuttle
#

oh, yeah, I have noticed that some games disable the virtual keyboard

amber hemlock
#

A lot of games uses the help key for switching between 15/31KHz

thorny tree
#

for keys check the readme

#

You could put a PDF and opened it on the core (Help)

icy shuttle
#

Yeah, that’s the plan

amber hemlock
#

Know the layout mappings from the PDF. It could be that the Rii mini probably doesn't support all keys that a full keyboard has to offer.

#

I couldn't find the Help key on the Rii.

thorny tree
#

the mapping is done for US keyboard with 104 keys

#

and there is two layout maybe one could permit to use Help evenif if you don't have 104 keys

#

on layout US alt, the help key is on key 54

amber hemlock
#

I have a Rii German layout though.

#

Will check later

thorny tree
#

sorry there is just US layout and JP Layout ...

eager yacht
icy shuttle
#

ahh right

amber hemlock
#

There must be a way to get the virtual keyboard stick on top, no matter what the game does.

#

Anybody tried Salamander? I get to missing sprites ingames. Wonder if it's the preinstalled HDF or the core.

icy shuttle
#

no, it’s no good on the core

#

it’s a z-layer issue

#

the background is in front of the sprites

#

Nemesis has the same issue

amber hemlock
#

Good to know.

icy shuttle
#

something else too

#

doesn’t boot on d88s either

#

err doesn’t work on d88s I should say

coral swallow
#

Oh is the Z layer issues why some of the sprites overlap in River City Ransom and the menu appears over the gameplay of Castlevania ?

icy shuttle
#

I dunno if those problems are the same, but yeah - I'm pretty sure the sprites are there in salamander, you just cannot see them because they are behind the background

foggy pawn
# icy shuttle Posting the website that links to archive feels like a grey area, <@314946127487...

Sorry, I didn’t mean to post that to make you feel called out. Also you’re very kind and understanding of the situation.

Personally I don’t think it’s an issue at all because you’re linking to an external site that has nothing hosted there that can be considered a grey area. We also have no reasonable control over or can be held accountable for what that site links or doesn’t link to either.

icy shuttle
#

no no, don't feel called out. I just wanted to clarify because it's always felt pretty grey to me and I don't want to be getting off on a technicality

foggy pawn
#

We had this conversation recently in the mod chat and I don’t want to misrepresent @slate timber here but she weighed in that linking to those sites is fine. Just can’t directly link to those files.

#

it is a very silly legal world we live in but I hope this just cements the incredible value these games have to people and making them more accessible is a goal that copyright holders should also aspire to.

is there a working list for current unstable core? Was really hoping to see marble madness come to life at some point, we dont really have good version on mister on any of the systems it currently runs.

icy shuttle

Unfortunately, I don't think there is a working version of Marble Madness yet. We were looking for one, but every version we found had graphics corruption :/

For marble madness there is the atari system 1 core, this version working great

heady kayak

finally got a mt32 pi and have been using it for this core and it's great. i've noticed some games makes you explicitly chose your sound output at bootup. for games that don't, is there a keyboard command to make this selection? or if a menu choice doesn't pop up, the game doesn't support the mt32?

icy shuttle
#

there are a couple of games that need you to hold the "登" key on the virtual keyboard during boot to use midi

#

atomic robo kid you hold f1 during boot

heady kayak
#

oh shit i didn't even know you could bring up a virtual keyboard

so would you say most games midi isn't supported?

I’ll be honest, im not sure. There was a thread on the forums where folks were discovering supported games. So there may be some we haven’t seen

So I noticed that Phalanx gives an error on the new pack. I have working D88's (at least I get the Zoom logo animating rather than the "Error reading disk, please reset" ) - I'm not sure I have the patience to wait for the game to load via floppy emulation... is there a straightforward way to apply my D88s to the HDF?

#

oh, never mind. If you hold f8 at boot and select the !Intro.bat you can get at least that far

#

OK, if I follow the instructions in the HDF for !Intro and put my D88 System and Data discs in, I do get to the game menu

#

I'll keep investigating

icy shuttle
#

making HDFs is a pain. I will have to look if Phalanx is in the upcoming pack - that one is kind of a pain because it's got a disk just for the intro

river mango
icy shuttle
#

ahh yeah, on our testing sheet it says that phalanx's graphics are corrupt - it may not be compatible with the core.

icy shuttle
alpine orchid
#

also, anyone know how to get a western keyboard to generate the backslash?

icy shuttle
#

if you hold right mouse button, you can bring up an on screen keyboard (some games disable this, unfortunately)

alpine orchid
#

ooo

#

the music is lovely BTW, and it's only a little sprite corruption 🙂

#

with a real mouse, rmb does indeed bring up the keyboard - one of the few cores that doesn't use DS4 touchpad as mouse tho

icy shuttle
#

Yeah. A lot of the games will boot and sound great, but the sprite corruption makes them unplayable

alpine orchid
#

I had the same sprite corruption with my floppies so it's nothing to do with the hdf, so that's good

#

this is really good and the speed difference makes the HDF so much more user friendly

icy shuttle
#

Yeah, I think there are still d88s that haven't been converted to hdf yet - but there are a lot of games we still need to test

alpine orchid
#

I almost wish Akumajou Dracula took longer to load but at least you can still listen to the loading music after it has loaded

Pizza Busters is ridiculous

Pinball Pinball, I can't find the right flipper key

#

I have a TKL keyboard, could be the problem?

But I’m bored lol (obv just kidding)

fierce sequoia
#

Today i installed the package from the Pixel Cherry Ninja Tutorial.
Core is the latest X68000 but if i choose the x68000 from Computer i
only get black screen :/ Seems frozen cause i can not go back to Mister menu

icy shuttle
#

can you bring the mister OSD up?

fierce sequoia
#

nope ... screen truns black and stays black..... ahm maybe a dumb noob question but are there additional files needed inside the gamefolder ?
Currently there are the

-Games
-boot0
-boot.vhd or something like...
-blankdisk

thorny tree
#

maybe the rbf is not correctly downloaded on your mister

#

if it is freeze like that

fierce sequoia
#

the rbf is the same as in the video from Pixel Cherry Ninja

thorny tree
#

or you screen is out of sync

icy shuttle
fierce sequoia
icy shuttle
#

Load it up

#

On your controller, hit the button you use to open the mister OSD

thorny tree
#

try vsync_adjust=2 on your mister.ini

icy shuttle
#

press right once, then up twice, then whatever button you use to select

fierce sequoia
#

as soon as i start the X68000 i cant Bring Up the Mister menu again

icy shuttle
#

no I know

#

but I wonder if it's there

#

and your screen doesn't support the core's resolution

#

68k has weird resolutions

#

castlevania is like 256x512

#

(not 512x256)

fierce sequoia
#

I ve had the Same issue on S-TV but there ive just copied the Rbf in the wrong folder thats why i asked If some files missing ...maybe

thorny tree
#

You could opened the OSD if nothing is on X68000 directory

icy shuttle
#

if you can't bring the OSD up then either mister main has crashed or your display doesn't support the resolution/refresh rate

fierce sequoia
#

thats strange cause any other system works propper

icy shuttle
#

Well like I said, we should test to see which it is

fierce sequoia
#

yes of course i'll test again and let you know

icy shuttle
#

yup yup. if main is crashing, then it's something else. but if it's the screen, we can futz with the ini and see if we can't get it working

#

either way, we just need to know which way to head

tawdry creek
#

@fierce sequoia it might help to say what your MiSTer is outputting to

#

What type of screen? What video output? What output resolution? That kind of thing

fierce sequoia
#

Ok so here we are ... still not working...
I downloaded the latest rbf... lemony fresh from github....
My X68000 Folder do look like this....

#

Run the X68000 silence black screen ... nothing...
The proof that its frozen is that i hit the Mister OSD Button and it doesent appear...
On any other core i did something wrong i was able to bring back the OSD ... SO
somethings missing int the folder ? Wrong structure ?

icy shuttle
#

how big is the rbf file?

icy shuttle
fierce sequoia
#

3.5mb

#

but the resolution of the mister is different to the core... thats why you cen set a seperate res to the Mister OSD

icy shuttle
#

if the horizontal resolution is too low, the menu won’t render (for instance, if I use the akumajou resolution right off of the core (256x512) the menu cannot render because it’s too narrow

#

Did you try those steps I mentioned yesterday?

  • load the core
  • press the menu button
  • press right
  • press up twice
  • press the ok button
#

if that reboots you back to the menu core, then mister main is still running, it just isn’t working with your display

fierce sequoia
#

ok that menu right up up works 🙂
The thing is that at least the loading screen of the sharp dont appear...:
I can hear a small click and that all.. so yes its not frozen and i can do the "blind"reset

icy shuttle
#

so yeah, the core is running, but your screen can’t display it. What is your mister hooked into?

fierce sequoia
#

is there another "bios" file needed ?

icy shuttle
#

no, it’s running fine - your display just can’t display it. we can tweak that, but we need to know what you’re plugged into

fierce sequoia
#

ok im running my mister via HDMI in a HDMI - Audio Splitter and then Audio via jack into my amp and the HDMI into my Acer Monitor

icy shuttle
#

can you go straight from the mister into your monitor? Just temporarily - I just don’t want the other stuff in the chain to be a factor (it shouldn’t be, but better safe than sorry)

fierce sequoia
#

sure

icy shuttle
#

same result?

fierce sequoia
#

second need to change cable chaos here 😄

I can finally delete all these test builds and run the pack as God intended

eager yacht

Just an FYI, we mostly tested this pack with the latest stable core, but there are some issues here and there that are fixed by using the latest unstable build, so if you’re comfortable using that I’d say use that

I know there are at least a few games that need the new keyboard layout options just so you have the right keys available to start the game

icy shuttle
#

and nemesis 90's midi sound works in the unstable

tawdry creek
#

What's different about the external scaler vs MiSTer scaler versions?

eager yacht
#

@tawdry creek there are a couple core specific settings that are different when using an external scaler that can’t be set in the MiSTer.ini, so that pack has all those games preconfigured. Since we use setnames, it was needed

#

I believe the core has to be set to “Full Screen” instead of “Original” for the scalers (or something like that)

verbal abyss
#

I am being especially thick. But where's the link?

tawdry creek
#

With my MiSter setup I've got it outputting to an iPad screen, and a 32" 4K monitor. Only the 32" monitor is going via the RT4K. Sounds like it'll be fine, but just stretched out a bit on my iPad screen (which is fine by me, that's not there for accuracy)

I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but would love to see Adult packs for all the consoles and pc's. What is adult/taboo changes over time. Regardless, it's all games. If I had the time or know how I'd offer to help, but for many of these computers, I'm a newb. I played through Leisure Suite Larry for the first time last year, quite tame now, but I remember it being considered Risque back in the day.

#

Mmh, strange. Most games halt at the Human68k DOS screen and don't boot further.

#

Which core version you use exactly for this pack?

icy shuttle
#

how far does it get in the human68k screen?

#

does it start loading a game, or does it show like 3 lines and sit

amber hemlock
#

Shows the 3 lines with X68000 terminal V1.0 at the end.

icy shuttle
#

yeah, that means it either isn't loading the hdf or it can't write to it. You kept all the paths the same, yeah?

amber hemlock
#

Yep. Maybe it's confused with my old X68000 setup. I don't know. Will have to look into it.

#

Dracula X works fine

#

I have an external SSD. Maybe that's the problem

#

Yeah, it's the external SSD, just unplugged it. So, i have to copy the games again.

icy shuttle
#

ahh ok - made me nervous there for a second 🙂

amber hemlock
#

Same happend for me with the DOS 0 MHz collection. Copying the "media" folder to "games/x68000" of the SSD should do the trick.

eager yacht
#

Yes, there is a note about that at least on the main archive page (and hopefully in the readme as well) that you want to move the resulting games folder over to your external storage if that’s where your games are stored

tawdry creek
#

I store my games on my NAS and just did a quick test (Nemesis 90) and its looking good 🫶 Used the External scaler version of the games and it looks fine on my iPad screen. Haven't had a chance to try it out yet with the RT4K

trail cypress
#

@icy shuttle @eager yacht According to the readme.txt, once expanded, all games should have "/games/,/_Computer/,/config/" folders. If I expand the external scaler folder I see this for all games. However, when games in the MiSTer scaler folder are expanded, almost all of them are missing the 'config' folder. Is this to be expected?

icy shuttle
#

that's correct. the scaler folder has to have a config for each game because scalers require some changes to the core config. Only a couple of games in the normal folder had to have config changes

#

We found a couple of games would boot more reliably with the turbo CPU, so we enabled it for those games

How do i select the mouse in Arkanoid II? You can enter the menu option via controller, but then?

Or maybe the keyboard routine doesn't work properly. You can do anything via keyboard in this menu

@amber hemlock it’s funny this was actually one of the games I tested last night and I noticed that the mouse was working for me in the menu but not in the game

You can use the mouse to start the game, even navigate with it through the other menu options. But the direction/movement isn't working, because you can't set it to "mouse" in the controller settings.

@rancid compass there have been other packs such as the old X68000 starter pack but the difference with Neon68K is that the hard drive images are paired with MGL’s for one click launching and all of the games have also been thoroughly tested and categorized. They have also been categorized by genre.

Also, some games that required specific settings to run properly (i.e. Turbo CPU) have been preconfigured with those settings. The games also use setnames so that if you wanted to save custon configs per game (i.e. mapping keyboard keys to a controller), you can do so right out of the box.

#

also, the intent here is to iterate on this pack as the core improves and as users give more suggestions for games that could be added. Very similar to the idea of 0 MHz and Amigavision

rancid compass
#

Thank you. Thus nothing to gain for Cho Ren Sha, I guess. But I am happy that everyone is happy though chefkiss

eager yacht
#

The only possible gain for that game is that our pack includes the latest version of that game version 1.10 whereas I’m not sure the old packs had that version

#

Cho Rensha is awesome though definitely something I want to put more time into playing

verbal abyss
#

Im being dumb, again! I read the instruction in readme. So I Select for example English_Keyboard&Mouse if i extract them it extracts folders for every game, inside of which are copys of /games/
/_Computer/
/config/

#

but each title has copys of these folders, so do i copy each individual game folder including the 3 Sub folders or am i supposed to be unzipping and gettind one set of /games/ etc containing all titles which i then merge into my sd card?

#

Im on mac if that is causing issues

eager yacht
#

you should be unzipping the contents directly to their respective games, _Computer, and config subfolders

#

instead of extracting each game zip to a folder that shares the name of the parent folder, just extract the contents directly to wherever you’re extracting them to so in the end you should only have the games, _Computer, and config folders (depending on which packs you extract, you may also see a docs folder)

verbal abyss
#

ahh ok i didnt see the github - where the instruction make total sense. sorry about that

eager yacht
#

I’ll go back and check that readme and update the other readme so it’s more consistent

amber hemlock
#

Vertical scrolling games with a 512x v resolution scales awfully via Retrotink 4K. Maybe it's the core, it seems far from being perfect

#

Looks like a flimmering horizontally.

eager yacht
#

I wonder if that’s a MiSTer.ini setting that needs to be changed 🤔 I don’t know much about the scaler stuff

icy shuttle
#

what game are you looking at JB?

amber hemlock
#

Cyber Core at the moment

eager yacht
#

flimmering might be my new favorite word btw

amber hemlock

glimmer/flimmer whatever. Looks like a horizontal tearing of some kind.

but even, like steps

Not really

icy shuttle

eager yacht

ah ok

#

I learned something today then

amber hemlock
#

Huh, it's far from being ok

eager yacht
#

I’m sure you did, but you used the files from the external scaler folder?

amber hemlock
#

Of course.

icy shuttle
amber hemlock
#

This is so crappy i can see anything. This doesn't prove anything.

#

But if i look closely enough i can see the horizontal scaling artefacts in your clip.

icy shuttle
amber hemlock
#

Then it's good enough for you. I can't stand this kind of issues.

icy shuttle
#

I don’t know what issue you’re seeing. Any aberrations you’re seeing the video are side effects of recording a screen. The horizontal scaling artifacts you think you’re seeing is the profile from the tink

amber hemlock
#

Not really. But i will take a look a the mister scaler games pack later.

#

If there is a difference

foggy pawn
#

Check again

eager yacht
#

is it possible that it could be a goofy, turn the MiSTer on/off again, turn the Tink on/off again gremlin issue?

amber hemlock
#

Gemini Wing though looks fine.

eager yacht
#

interesting

icy shuttle
#

I assure you there are no horizontal scaling artifacts. Make sure your INI is set up properly

amber hemlock
#

X68000 is very strange when it comes to resolutions.

icy shuttle
#

what does the tink say the resolution is when you start the game?

amber hemlock
#

Cyber Core?

icy shuttle
#

yes

amber hemlock
#

Ok, Gemini Wing isn' t fine, it depends on the graphical pattern how strong the scaling issues are. They are there.

#

Cybercore is a 256x512 game.

icy shuttle
#

i see the issue. we forgot something from the ini. add this: ```[video=256x512]
vscale_mode=1
video_mode=512,1024,60

#

you're getting artifacts because the tink is scaling the 720/1080 image

#

@eager yacht can you add ```[video=256x512]
vscale_mode=1
video_mode=512,1024,60

amber hemlock
#

Putting it in the mister.ini?

icy shuttle
#

yeah

#

that one isn't in the tink wiki - I had to add it myself

#

and we copied the tink wiki

#

you can also do [video=256x512] vscale_mode=1 video_mode=256,512,60 which is 1:1 but the mister menu won't render then

eager yacht
#

I’ll add it, I just have to find where that lives…I know it’s on the github

icy shuttle
#

that's my bad - I forgot about it when we were putting the readme together last night

eager yacht
#

ok i’ll add it there to the main readme files

amber hemlock
#

Yep, now it's fine. This resolution was really missing in the mister.ini.

icy shuttle
#

yeah, sorry about that - i had a note to make sure we added that one and then just forgot

tawdry creek
icy shuttle

yeah, I think that's on Limi's list of to-dos

First off, this is an awesome pack that I’m looking forward to sinking my teeth into this weekend👍

I have two game requests - Genocide 2 (since 1 is part of the pack), and Lagoon (the much cooler version of the SNES game).

Genocide 2 isn’t compatible with the core, unfortunately. I think it is in the major bugs folder

The OST is awesome on that one

and if you're into "bump mechanics" RPGs, that's one for the books... or so I hear

Listen to those bonus tracks at the end of the ost for some peak early 90s neo-hippie Japanese music

for some reason, the standard arrow keys work in the first menu, but only the numpad arrows work in the controller menu. numpad works fine for both menus, though

icy shuttle
#

We missed a game with the release so we will likely add it soon. We are trying to figure out if there is a way we can have folks automatically update the set as we add things to it

amber hemlock
#

I don't have a numpad on my Rii mini keyboard. Bad luck..

eager yacht
#

ah damn

#

yeah, I have one of those too and it doesn't have one...I have a KVM that I use to switch my desktop keyboard over when needed

amber hemlock
#

And i can't use the Sharp "Help Key". Only works with a real US layout. Double bad luck!

icy shuttle
#

Virtual keyboard work (hold right click)?

amber hemlock
#

This mostly doesn't work for the games. It shows up a few seconds and then it's gone.

icy shuttle
#

Yeah, it’s the Hail Mary. We couldn’t figure out why it’s seemingly disabled in some games

#

Might be a resolution thing

eager yacht
#

hmm some games it doesn't work for, but a lot it seemed to work

amber hemlock
#

I gave up after 4-5 in a row didn't work.

eager yacht
amber hemlock
#

Yep, the february 2025 iirc.

#

Help key can't work, maybe with a full non US keyboard. But the mini doesn't have the key.

#

A US Rii might work.

eager yacht
#

oh right yeah

amber hemlock
#

A lot of X68000 games allow you to select the 15KHz mode via the Help key.

tawdry creek
eager yacht
#

Mugen Senshi Valis II is now Neon-ified...somehow we missed that the HDF with the translated version works fine NotLikeThis

amber hemlock
#

Would be no big loss, the Valis games are boring anyway.

eager yacht
#

I like them alright, but to each their own. This version is not great gameplay-wise, but it's a series people know

shadow portal
#

Are the English friendly games generally patched/translated?

#

or is it more of a "not that much text in the game to begin with, making it playable even if one doesn't understand JP"?

eager yacht
#

the latter. other than Valis II, I'm not sure how many other translations are in there

shadow portal
#

Gotcha, perfect 👍

#

For what it's worth, just putting it out there that I for one would love to have all the the non-translated versions available, although I understand I'm probably in the minority here, and that it might require extra work on your side. So no pressure at all👍

icy shuttle
#

Basically, our strategy was that if you could get to (and understand) gameplay, we put it in the main english folder. We didn't want folks to miss out on good games like Étoile Princesse just because they were in japanese.

icy shuttle
shadow portal
#

That sounds like a totally fair strategy

eager yacht
#

@shadow portal one of the issues with Valis II was that the non-translated HDFs we had do not boot for some reason

icy shuttle
#

it was a memory thing. we haven't yet figured out the incantation to unlock the extra memory some games needed

shadow portal
#

Right right, not to mention that the core IS WiP, so that goes with the territory

verbal abyss
#

I couldn't get this to unzip correctly even using terminal. Obviously it's me as noone else having issues. I'll sort it on a window laptop later. Looking forward to testing

#

Regarding keyboard mapping, I wonder if this might be useful for programmer type people?
It's a device that converts USB keyboards to actual X68000, but within the Arduino code is the mapping. So someone has already worked out how to map keyboard to normal keyboard.
I use it on my X68000's as I don't have original keyboards and I can use all keys on a USB keyboard -

thorny tree
#

Is there any issue with the current keyboard mapping on the core ?

verbal abyss
#

I honestly dont kno wt eff im doing wrong, but even on a windoze machine with 7zip it still extracts everything to seperate folders cringe

#

And there is no right click 7zip option present. Its a clunky old laptop that doesnt belong to me

#

But however i try to tackle it with 7zip it just unzips everything to individual game folders...I never had these issues with Amigavision...nevermind Its obviously something super simple im not doing correctly, but its frustrating.

icy shuttle
verbal abyss
#

Ok bear with...though I'm pretty sure I enabled that option. Just rebooting the pc

#

No extract or extract here options despite me checking them in the settings

icy shuttle
#

someone else had that issue when I was googling. Try running 7zip as the administrator

verbal abyss
#

Yeh this is run as administrator.

icy shuttle
#

weird. winrar has similar options - maybe try installing that?

verbal abyss
#

Ok I'll try winrar if not I think I'm going to switch back to my Mac and try again there although
I also followed the terminal command in the GitHub Mac instructions with no joy.

icy shuttle
#

I tried to figure out how to export a preset in better zip, but I don't see how. These are the setting I used

verbal abyss
#

Ooh cool. Hold on just trying winrar.

icy shuttle
#

that lets me select all the archives, extract them, and then just choose "merge" for everything

verbal abyss
#

Ok it's looking good for winrar

#

Lemme see what's what.
But I will set up betterzip with your settings too jic or for future reference. Less time spent in this windows laptop the better tbh it's nearly been launched out the window lol.

eager yacht
#

huh, that’s weird, you weren’t getting the “extract here” option in the 7-zip context menu

verbal abyss
verbal abyss
#

Ok so all copies to SD card and present. Do I need to update the core? I chose a game from the categorised menu and just got a black screen.

thorny tree
#

yes it is not released yet !

grand mulch
#

I find it delightfully unhinged that my set up shouldn’t work, but does

icy shuttle
#

I haven’t fucked with dv on the x68k in a while. I wonder what the issue is

grand mulch
#

Tower of Druaga video didn’t want to appear but again this is a very hackey solution I’m using so not too much of a shock.

icy shuttle
#

That may be a 24khz game (21? I dunno, there is one in the middle of 15 and 31)

amber hemlock
#

Works fine on my OLED. Strange resolution and refresh rate: 224x560@52,9Hz.

thorny tree
#

yes plenty

#

If you try Syvalyon you will be amazed on the atrac mode the resolution changed every minutes

grand mulch
#

Direct output isn’t actually supported on this core or if it is support is broken

#

so i’m not surprised it’s particular output is giving my scaler a hard time

amber hemlock
#

Terra Cresta: Another strange one: 224x496. It needs an entry for this resolution in the mister.ini. Scaling is wrong without.

icy shuttle
#

Ok, I would do like 448x992

#

As soon as I’m in front of my pc, I can post it. We should add it to the wiki

amber hemlock
#

Yep, i tested it. Works fine.

icy shuttle
#

Sorry for missing that one. I thought we got all the eccentric resolutions - and I wasnt testing them all on my tink

amber hemlock
#

Prince of Persia is funny too. Strong dithering in a 768x512 resolution.

icy shuttle
#

I’m off today so I can look at both of those after lunch

#

Thanks for checking these, Jack

#

I’ll make sure I check on the tink next time

#

Going forward, I should say

amber hemlock
#

PoP is fine, i just meant the high resolution ingame

icy shuttle
#

I dunno if that game just isn’t optimized, or if the core is having trouble with it, but it felt like it was right on the edge of what was playable

#

And only with turbo on

amber hemlock
#

Second button seems like pause. Very annoying. The game is playable with just one button and joypad up.

icy shuttle
#

Yes. That 2nd button pause threw me for a loop. We had that game in the “not working” column for a bit until Grandma checked it

#

I was like “I dunno, it keeps freezing on me”

amber hemlock
#

Thought the same for a moment. Hehe

#

It good that you can configure the joypad controls per game. Makes sense. Some games change the layout for e.g. shooting and jumping.

#

Pac-Land. Another one for the mister.ini: 304x448

icy shuttle
#

ahh good one, I'll add it - I don't think we looked much at the minor bugs one

#

try 1:1 and let me know if the menu shows up

vscale_mode=1
video_mode=304,448,60```
amber hemlock
#

It works fine, but doesn't fill the full screen. Also tried 608x896, the same

#

Ah, put in the wrong section. It works fullscreen.

icy shuttle
#

thats the vscale - it’s just doing pure integer scaling (which gets rid of those scaling artifacts). So if it can’t get a whole number scale factor to fill the screen, it will use the closest one it can

icy shuttle
amber hemlock
#

What menu, it don't see any? Just a green glitch at the start. Then the title screen where you start the game.

icy shuttle
#

No, I mean the mister menu

#

for instance, if you use the 256x512 modeline, the menu doesn't render (that's why I made it 512x1024(

#

the menu is there you just cannot see it

amber hemlock
#

Mister menu is fine in 304,448

icy shuttle
#

deft willow
#

Do you think it will ever have a fancy menu you load into like Amiga Vision, or does it just not work the same way (or worth the effort)

icy shuttle
#

something I have found is that there are folks who much prefer the individual format, rather than having a large hard drive image to download (which isn't even possible on the x68k core at the moment).

part of the reason we wanted to do an update script was because it gives folks the best of both worlds. Automation if you don't want to fiddle with the install (and just want everything) and the ability to pick and choose if you'd prefer to not have everything

amber hemlock
#

But we need more fixes for the core. I hope somebody will pick up on Puu-Sans work. I doesn't seem he will actively work on it in a forseeable time.

icy shuttle
#

that was one of our hopes with this set - get folks interested and, in turn, hopefully get a dev interested

well I dunno what import shit looks like there, but if you want one with no fuss, just grab a Pi 3A and the hat from either Pork (ships from Idaho), or Legacy Pixels (ships from Ohio).

If you have access to a 3d printer, you can get a little more fancy and grab this hat (shipped from Portugal - out of stock at the moment but they usually restock quickly, in my experience). You’ll need a pi zero 2w (the one with the headers soldered on) for that. Then there are a variety of good cases you can print (which I’ll dig up if you go that route.)

Finally, if you want to pay a premium, my absolute favorite is the mt32-pi Lite from Ricardo. There are a bunch of caveats with that (depending on what case you’re using). But if everything lines up, it’s the slickest looking one.

i think taki's case has a step file. If so, I will see if I can make one...

polar silo
#

Just needed a tiny bit more height to clear and my kit had 2 sets of mounting

icy shuttle
#

oh you just used the nuts? that's a good idea too

polar silo
#

And there were 3 different heights of those spacers

#

So I used the medium one which gave the case just enough height to clear it

#

And then yea used nuts on the top

icy shuttle
#

how does it look from the side? is it obviously not sitting flush?

polar silo
#

The only downside is the sides do rattle because of the loose fit

polar silo
#

Because of the gap the sides are loose... Not high enough for them to fall out though

#

A printed spacer probably would be the better solution

icy shuttle

@polar silo I need to dry out some transparent PETG but if you have a printer and want to try

that almost feels like cheating

Looked it up, and there were actually difficulty options in arranged mode, and there is no knockback at all when taking damage (regardless of difficulty).

Props to @grave jacinth for adding x68k to SAM. It's not working in the normal list at the moment, but you can activate it with MiSTer_SAM_on.sh x68k

icy shuttle
amber hemlock
#

Most games are running in 31KHz default anyway.

ocean raven
#

Welp, guess it's hdmi for the time being

amber hemlock
#

Plain 15KHz TVs/monitors will always be problematic. Most (if not all) games start in 31KHz resolutions. You can change some of them later ingame to 15KHz lowres resolutions. Some can be forced to 15KHz mode while pressing the Sharp X68000 "Help" key at the game boot. So, it makes sense to have a multisync capable display.

amber hemlock
#

Another problem with Sharp games in 15KHz and 60Hz capable CRT TVs: Even if the games are in lowres, the refresh rate is beyond 60Hz, 60.5Hz-61.5Hz is what i see often enough. Probably out of range for most simple consumer TVs. The core allows to switch to "60fps", which means a 59.9Hz output, but the CRT output is still black while the game sound is playing.

amber hemlock
#

Ah, you have to disable/ set vga_scaler=0, then the 15KHz games are working on my Sony consumer TV!!!

#

Of course you can't see the boot sequence with the Sharp DOS, but after the game is loaded you can play it. Try Daimaikamura/Ghouls'n Ghosts.

rotund parrot
#

Nice, that’s great to hear. There was a composite video encoder for the Sharp X68000 which made me suspect that consumer CRTs should work, but I’ve only tested with a 15khz PVM

amber hemlock
#

The working rate isn't that high. But all Capcom games i've tested so far are fine (Final Fight, Street Fighter II, Daimaikamura).

ocean raven
#

Things like this really make me wish we could have more than 3 alt configs

#

So why is this such an issue for x68k specifically? Cus ive played plenty of other pc cores on my 15hz monitor without much issue

amber hemlock
#

I wonder why only the Capcom games are working fine. I can set other games to lores 15KHz too, but they run only with a black screen and music playing.

icy shuttle
#

maybe refresh rate?

amber hemlock
#

Not really

icy shuttle
#

Oh wait

#

at 15khz, isn’t it under the HDMI spec?

#

since we aren’t letting the mister scale the image up

#

ehh, I suppose you wouldn’t get sound then

#

I dunno. computers

amber hemlock
#

Using the analog out directly via VGA to Scart RGB cable bypasses HDMI stuff anyway. I don't use a HDMI to VGA adapter.

#

The core itself has no issues to play 15KHz lores games with HDMI, just as info.

icy shuttle
#

you’re right, i played 15khz games while testing

thorny tree
#

I didn't check lately the issues

#

but it seems worth to check

icy shuttle

I did see that - I haven't had a chance to test it

#

are we not worried that it's a 1 step forward, 3 steps back situation?

thorny tree

will do the compile

#

We need heavy testing and see if it steps back or not

icy shuttle
#

yeah, we have a spreadsheet for compatability, so we can reference that

#

would be a huge win if that works

thorny tree
#

Salamander and Phalanx the issues are also on Puu-san core

icy shuttle

yeah, I didn't think there was a build where the issue wasn't present

thorny tree

Nemesis '94 I don't know what is missing on the current core ...

I will check floppies to see if I have the same behaviour

Any chance that this script could optional read/detect installed Neon68k configs/games on an external drive/SSD? I mean the script downloads everything to the SD card, though i tend to have it on my SSD. I only want to download the updates or new games directly to the SSD path.

icy shuttle
#

@amber hemlock ^^

amber hemlock
#

Thanks for the update. The script downloads now to SSD, but ALL games. Even if i select just die Updates.

tawdry creek
#

@amber hemlock if you run do updates does it download everything again?

amber hemlock
#

Yep, the whole package as it seems. I mostly stop at letter f or something.

tawdry creek
#

If you kill it before it completes downloading everything it won't write the file that tracks when it was fully run

amber hemlock
#

So, what should i do? Run it once completely and then it works for "Updates only" after that?

tawdry creek
#

Yes

#

FWIW the script has always downloaded all games first, then done updates after that.

#

Now that it can at least install games to a custom path I can probably add a feature for selecting games if that's what people want

amber hemlock
#

I'm not after certain games, i just wanted to get the new or corrected games. But i'll run it now completely, then try the "Updates" option again.

#

At that point the "Updates" option shouldn't download anything then, right? I mean i'm getting now the most recent package.

tawdry creek
#

It should print out messages like this:

Checking for updates
Fetching archive metadata...
Starting sync...
Fetching file list...
Performing incremental sync.................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Sync complete.
Done.
amber hemlock
#

It shows me exactly this. So, it's working fine. Thanks again, very convenient script.

tawdry creek
#

Glad it was just that 😁 you had me second guessing myself

amber hemlock
#

Well, i had all games already installed of course. But not via your script. That confused me for a second when it downloaded everything.

tawdry creek
#

Yeah, due to various reasons its not easy to look at files that already have been downloaded by some other process to figure out what needs updating/syncing, so for now its a pretty blunt instrument

icy shuttle
#

I wonder if adding something at the beggining that says “do you already have neon68k on your machine? (Answering ‘no’ will trigger a full download)” and if they say yes we just set the marker then

tawdry creek
#

Yeah, I could do that

icy shuttle
#

I can look at it in the morning. You don’t need to shoulder all of it, duder 🙂

tawdry creek

icy shuttle
rotund parrot
#

I know I just linked an eBay seller but generally speaking eBay prices for X68000 are absolutely crazy compared to going rates on Yahoo Japan auctions

#

Take this for instance

#

Fully refurbished XVI for about half of what the eBay seller is asking

#

Of course it may go higher than this since it’s a bid but probably not all the way to over $2000

icy shuttle
#

yeah, but it's also just the unit. I wonder if zuiki is going to sell the peripherals separately

rotund parrot
#

Ah fair

icy shuttle
#

the prices of these things is asnine across the board, full stop

#

and I also don't need one

#

but I wants

rotund parrot
#

Yeah it’s true. I had wanted one for years before finally getting one in 2023, and it has indeed hurt my wallet quite a bit

#

There was the computer itself, then I needed a mouse and keyboard which were like $300, then an expansion card for midi and ram, then midi modules, and then you need an external audio mixer to mix all the audio together

#

And then of course the video output is nonstandard so you need a way to deal with that

#

But despite all the pain, I had a lot of fun figuring out how to get the setup to work. And the games are really good so that helps

icy shuttle
#

I had a bunch of fun futzing around while we were building neon68k. it was just always such a bummer when a game wouldn't work on the core

#

I could just boot the giant scsi image into the windows emulator

#

but that feels dirty

rotund parrot

rotund parrot
#

I’d like to see my hack of Akumajou Dracula running on MiSTer at some point. I’m sure it runs now but it would be pointless

#

All it does is make the game render at 15khz

#

And since mister x68000 doesn’t support direct video it doesn’t do anything there

#

Sorgelig said that the pixel clock would make it difficult to support direct video, and I’m sure he’s right

#

I think it can change based on what mode the game picks

icy shuttle
#

yeah. same issue as ao486 iirc

elfin slate
#

whats wrong with 15khz on the x68000 core?

#

it works in most games for me

rotund parrot
#

Well the core automatically scales to 800x600 if I recall correctly, I think you can then downscale it

elfin slate
#

this is news to me

#

looks like real 240p to me

icy shuttle

no, it's real 240p

#

if you use Pu's core, it's 800x600

#

but that core isn't built for mister

rotund parrot
#

Oh nice, glad to hear that

icy shuttle
#

but because it doesn’t use direct video, if you’re pumping it into a scaler, you need to use all sorts of custom video modes to make sure it scales correctly

#

otherwise the mister scaler will do it

Hi! I have been trying to get the X68000 core working on my MiSTer Pi FPGA (Mega Pack edition) for months and I keep getting a black screen. I am using the most recent core (X68000_20240524.rbf, 3.5 MB), I believe I have all the needed BIOS files in the right place (see screenshot), and I am using the MiSTer.ini file that @icy shuttle posted earlier this year to help another user. I have tried the previous core (68000_20221022.rbf), but the problem is the same. I have attached my Pi on multiple displays and the same problem arises. When I load a game, I get the black screen, but I get the OSD when I press F12. I have no problems with any of the other cores. Any help appreciated. Let me know if there is any other information I can provide. Thanks!
