#Sharp X68000
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Yeah, that would be great. But i really crave direct video support for this core. I hope it's doable at some point.
love that this got it's own thread, thanks. i would really love to see the x68k core get to a point where it can be a full replacement for the original hardware
That would be killer. I was surprised to hear that not all of Puu-san’s changes from last year weren’t merged into the core yet. It’s a process. Put-san’s core works in mister, but it’s 800x600 and doesn’t have a lot of mister features.
Beta compiled by Zet-Sensai that has Puu's keyboard changes (courtesy of Wark) and some Midi fixes from Rebel40
Puu-san's blog: http://fpga8801.seesaa.net/category/24786679-1.html
Puu-San's latest beta with DMA changes, Keyboard changes and other fixes.
Had to fix the date 🙂
Yeah, the keyboard changes are good. Kyukyoku Tiger e.g. is playable now.
There is two versions of Puu san core
One with d88 floppy only
And the other with xdf floppy only
I grabbed this one from the mister forums thread (someone there compiled it). I could compile both versions if folks would find that useful (working on a project right now that uses xdfs so being able to mount them directly, rather than converting them to d88, would be helpful)
The RBF is on each qar archive files
Even runs the updated version 🙂
Have it, yes
Oh I didn’t know we had a dedicated channel lol
Yep, HDF is the way to go. For software emulators there is even something better. I hope this will work in Mister too at some point (support of HDS files)

Everyone is curious about the Sharp X68000 computer as it has some of the best retro games of all time and is considered a retro pc gaming powerhouse so it's time to do a series on the Sharp X68000, the Sharp X68000s best games and Sharp X68000 hidden gems! So let's talk about Shar...
Can’t be specific but there’s a 0Mhz style pack for the X68000 archived out there. Don’t want to steal @slender wave thunder, he was trying to post about it.
There will be a new (updated) pack soon
that pack is the old pack. the amiga vision folks aren’t involved with it’s creation. but some folks are working on a new one 🙂
(with more games)
Is this new, I didn't know about it.
Neither did I but there's a new cool updated pack coming soon, thanks for the info @icy shuttle !
Limi put that together quickly because folks on the forum were looking for it. It’s just a link to a search on archive.org
its the same pack that has been available
Hoping to have the new pack ready soon. Then we want feedback from folks about stuff worth adding (I think we have added a dozen or so new games)
Limi is going to whip something up for the new pack once it’s ready
Converting disk games to HDF is fun and exciting work
Did you see the 0Mhz style pack I posted about?
That's awesome!
yeah, that’s what we are going for - same format
thank you thank you thank you thank you
Glad to see this channel here. Do I need the latest unstable mister build to run the newest X68k core ?
Nope. Runs on stable main
Looking forward to this! 🤘
Thanks so much to everyone working on this.
@river mango I'm losing my mind. What magical incantation lets me play Kyuukyoku Tiger on the new core
AltGr iirc
No dice. Wonder if I have the right keyboard
Have you selected the US Keyboard in the core?
Oh I figured it was the 2nd JP keyboard. let me try that
I don't even use a full keyboard, just a Rii mini.
I wonder though, where on that Rii we can find the Sharp "Help" key.
does yours have a mouse pad?
Yes
because you can open the virtual keyboard by right clicking
might have to click twice
This doesn't work properly most of the time. At least here
oh, yeah, I have noticed that some games disable the virtual keyboard
A lot of games uses the help key for switching between 15/31KHz
for keys check the readme
You could put a PDF and opened it on the core (Help)
Yeah, that’s the plan
Know the layout mappings from the PDF. It could be that the Rii mini probably doesn't support all keys that a full keyboard has to offer.
I couldn't find the Help key on the Rii.
the mapping is done for US keyboard with 104 keys
and there is two layout maybe one could permit to use Help evenif if you don't have 104 keys
on layout US alt, the help key is on key 54
sorry there is just US layout and JP Layout ...
not as far as I know…but we could use setname and then include a config with that game that has the needed keyboard layout preset
ahh right
There must be a way to get the virtual keyboard stick on top, no matter what the game does.
Anybody tried Salamander? I get to missing sprites ingames. Wonder if it's the preinstalled HDF or the core.
no, it’s no good on the core
it’s a z-layer issue
the background is in front of the sprites
Nemesis has the same issue
Good to know.
something else too
doesn’t boot on d88s either
err doesn’t work on d88s I should say
Oh is the Z layer issues why some of the sprites overlap in River City Ransom and the menu appears over the gameplay of Castlevania ?
I dunno if those problems are the same, but yeah - I'm pretty sure the sprites are there in salamander, you just cannot see them because they are behind the background
I had a great afternoon messing around with various X68k games .
Lost my bookmark to the X68000 collection that are like the AmigaVision and 0MHz DOS collections. Anyone have the link? 🔗
There are a couple of them. We are working on a complete (and maintained) version, but that is still probably a couple of weeks away.
In the meantime, I think https://x68k.us will get you what you need
That’s the one! Thank you so much!
Nice with a new maintained version, will you post it here when it’s released? 😄
Yeah, we will give folks the heads up
Cool!
Apologies but we can’t share direct links to these archives. You’re taken care of though so it’s all good but just posting this as a reminder for everyone.
Roger that 🫡
Posting the website that links to archive feels like a grey area, @foggy pawn . So if you guys would prefer we didn't do that too, I totally understand
Sorry, I didn’t mean to post that to make you feel called out. Also you’re very kind and understanding of the situation.
Personally I don’t think it’s an issue at all because you’re linking to an external site that has nothing hosted there that can be considered a grey area. We also have no reasonable control over or can be held accountable for what that site links or doesn’t link to either.
no no, don't feel called out. I just wanted to clarify because it's always felt pretty grey to me and I don't want to be getting off on a technicality
We had this conversation recently in the mod chat and I don’t want to misrepresent @slate timber here but she weighed in that linking to those sites is fine. Just can’t directly link to those files.
it is a very silly legal world we live in but I hope this just cements the incredible value these games have to people and making them more accessible is a goal that copyright holders should also aspire to.
Has saving back to HDF been implemented? I know it hadn't last time I tried the core.
Edit: It has not.
DO NOT 🦜 (🏴☠️ ? ) software ! Digitally preserve it in carefully named ~~archives ~~ treasure chests instead.
You wouldn't download a vampire
no siree 😄
is there a working list for current unstable core? Was really hoping to see marble madness come to life at some point, we dont really have good version on mister on any of the systems it currently runs.
Unfortunately, I don't think there is a working version of Marble Madness yet. We were looking for one, but every version we found had graphics corruption :/
For marble madness there is the atari system 1 core, this version working great
thank you - i didnt even know that existed - its not in update all is it?
well i knew indiana jones was on there - i must have not looked the last time at marble madness working
I don't know I don't use update all
Yes it’s there
I just tested it, game runs perfectly
Do i just place .HDF files in the X68000 games folder?
yep
finally got a mt32 pi and have been using it for this core and it's great. i've noticed some games makes you explicitly chose your sound output at bootup. for games that don't, is there a keyboard command to make this selection? or if a menu choice doesn't pop up, the game doesn't support the mt32?
there are a couple of games that need you to hold the "登" key on the virtual keyboard during boot to use midi
atomic robo kid you hold f1 during boot
oh shit i didn't even know you could bring up a virtual keyboard
so would you say most games midi isn't supported?
I’ll be honest, im not sure. There was a thread on the forums where folks were discovering supported games. So there may be some we haven’t seen
all right i'll go down that rabbit hole. thanks for the info!
Hmm what tink settings do you use with this? My screen is flickering like mad

``` Taken from https://consolemods.org/wiki/AV:RetroTINK-4K/System_Specific_Settings#MiSTer (but I added a resolution for dracula)
The System-Specific Settings page is all about highlighting how you can use the RetroTINK-4K's various features to improve the experience of using your video game systems beyond just plugging them in. This can range from setting 1:1 pixel aspect ratio for Super Game Boy on the SNES, to dovetailing with the Sharpscale Plugin on the PlayStation TV...
Thanks....I did read the wiki before but never really intended to try x68000 so I ignored that bit.
So I noticed that Phalanx gives an error on the new pack. I have working D88's (at least I get the Zoom logo animating rather than the "Error reading disk, please reset" ) - I'm not sure I have the patience to wait for the game to load via floppy emulation... is there a straightforward way to apply my D88s to the HDF?
oh, never mind. If you hold f8 at boot and select the !Intro.bat you can get at least that far
OK, if I follow the instructions in the HDF for !Intro and put my D88 System and Data discs in, I do get to the game menu
I'll keep investigating
making HDFs is a pain. I will have to look if Phalanx is in the upcoming pack - that one is kind of a pain because it's got a disk just for the intro
When is said pack slated for release? Can’t wait to try it
ahh yeah, on our testing sheet it says that phalanx's graphics are corrupt - it may not be compatible with the core.
As soon as we have a test build ready, I will shoot it your way
Sounds good
So, I can start it from LHES "Execute" with CD Games; CD Phalanx; !Start but if I start it from autoexec directly, it won't get past the cat. I wonder what the difference is when loaded from within LHES
also, anyone know how to get a western keyboard to generate the backslash?
if you hold right mouse button, you can bring up an on screen keyboard (some games disable this, unfortunately)
ooo
the music is lovely BTW, and it's only a little sprite corruption 🙂
with a real mouse, rmb does indeed bring up the keyboard - one of the few cores that doesn't use DS4 touchpad as mouse tho
Yeah. A lot of the games will boot and sound great, but the sprite corruption makes them unplayable
I had the same sprite corruption with my floppies so it's nothing to do with the hdf, so that's good
this is really good and the speed difference makes the HDF so much more user friendly
Yeah, I think there are still d88s that haven't been converted to hdf yet - but there are a lot of games we still need to test
I almost wish Akumajou Dracula took longer to load but at least you can still listen to the loading music after it has loaded
Pizza Busters is ridiculous
Pinball Pinball, I can't find the right flipper key
doesn't seem to work with other input
virtual keyboard is disabled too
not the left button on the dpad?
doesn't seem to be
I have a TKL keyboard, could be the problem?
also, something is up with Populous' mouse input - I can't seem to raise/lower land
that said, I have no mana
oh, it's in pause
All old japanese computer need keyboard with numpad
You should just release the pack tomorrow @icy shuttle so I can make a vid 🤣 slow week for me and I have time
not my call. waiting on a few things i think 🙂
But I’m bored lol (obv just kidding)
Today i installed the package from the Pixel Cherry Ninja Tutorial.
Core is the latest X68000 but if i choose the x68000 from Computer i
only get black screen :/ Seems frozen cause i can not go back to Mister menu
can you bring the mister OSD up?
nope ... screen truns black and stays black..... ahm maybe a dumb noob question but are there additional files needed inside the gamefolder ?
Currently there are the
-Games
-boot0
-boot.vhd or something like...
-blankdisk
the rbf is the same as in the video from Pixel Cherry Ninja
or you screen is out of sync
did you get it from update all?
yes
try vsync_adjust=2 on your mister.ini
press right once, then up twice, then whatever button you use to select
as soon as i start the X68000 i cant Bring Up the Mister menu again
no I know
but I wonder if it's there
and your screen doesn't support the core's resolution
68k has weird resolutions
castlevania is like 256x512
(not 512x256)
I ve had the Same issue on S-TV but there ive just copied the Rbf in the wrong folder thats why i asked If some files missing ...maybe
You could opened the OSD if nothing is on X68000 directory
if you can't bring the OSD up then either mister main has crashed or your display doesn't support the resolution/refresh rate
thats strange cause any other system works propper
Well like I said, we should test to see which it is
yes of course i'll test again and let you know
yup yup. if main is crashing, then it's something else. but if it's the screen, we can futz with the ini and see if we can't get it working
either way, we just need to know which way to head
@fierce sequoia it might help to say what your MiSTer is outputting to
What type of screen? What video output? What output resolution? That kind of thing
Ok so here we are ... still not working...
I downloaded the latest rbf... lemony fresh from github....
My X68000 Folder do look like this....
Run the X68000 silence black screen ... nothing...
The proof that its frozen is that i hit the Mister OSD Button and it doesent appear...
On any other core i did something wrong i was able to bring back the OSD ... SO
somethings missing int the folder ? Wrong structure ?
how big is the rbf file?
this isn’t proof that it’s frozen, unfortunately. it could still be there and your screen just cant display it (as we mentioned yesterday)
3.5mb
but the resolution of the mister is different to the core... thats why you cen set a seperate res to the Mister OSD
if the horizontal resolution is too low, the menu won’t render (for instance, if I use the akumajou resolution right off of the core (256x512) the menu cannot render because it’s too narrow
Did you try those steps I mentioned yesterday?
- load the core
- press the menu button
- press right
- press up twice
- press the ok button
if that reboots you back to the menu core, then mister main is still running, it just isn’t working with your display
ok that menu right up up works 🙂
The thing is that at least the loading screen of the sharp dont appear...:
I can hear a small click and that all.. so yes its not frozen and i can do the "blind"reset
so yeah, the core is running, but your screen can’t display it. What is your mister hooked into?
is there another "bios" file needed ?
no, it’s running fine - your display just can’t display it. we can tweak that, but we need to know what you’re plugged into
ok im running my mister via HDMI in a HDMI - Audio Splitter and then Audio via jack into my amp and the HDMI into my Acer Monitor
can you go straight from the mister into your monitor? Just temporarily - I just don’t want the other stuff in the chain to be a factor (it shouldn’t be, but better safe than sorry)
sure
same result?
try this
I wonder if it is not linked to space at the biginning of each lines at the end of the configuration.
yup, I fixed that too
loading up ..
🤞
👍
hopefully we didn't blow up their mister...
we done it
yeah, that's because I commented out the video mode
already stage 24 you are a good speedrunner 🤣
try this one now
yeah, so it's the video mode, sec.
What monitor do you have?
actually try this real quick
Acer but cant read model cause Power cable is in Front of it 😜
works same... huge full screen ...
And the Screen where you should select the X68000 is wobbeling bluring whatever
I think I figured it out
nope 😄 blackscreen
yeah, your screen doesn't like the 256x512 res
ok so does this tweaked ini may cause an trouble with all my other working cores ?
go back to the one with the full screen dracula. and then we need a modeline expert to cook up a custom modeline for screen so it can interpret that without blowing it up
Great work @icy shuttle troubleshooting 101
broken clock is right twice a day
Fun stuff: while messing with Minix to see if I can get it running on X68000, found out that partitioned SASI HDFs are working without any issues (not that I expected some and ofc, partitioning a 40 megs drive is not much useful today lol other than these fringe experiments)
nope. window hasn't opened yet
not sure sharp lawyers even know what an x68000 is 🙂
sometimes there’s just a random japanese Zaibatsu with its legal team on standby
that isn’t nintendo
anyway, all is cool
Check again 👀
😈
Check again
it’s still uploading but will be done soon
Check again
Sir, I know a guy who knows a guy
Awesome....looking forward to this...will I need to delete the old pack or will it just get overwritten?
check again
it is liveeeee
check again
get some spare neon bulbs ready
I was worried that something got borked with the upload overnight at first, but just confirmed we’re all set ✅
I think there are only a couple of new things in there. If folks have requests for games, we'd love to hear them. I don't think we are going to do an adult pack, so you're on your own (you sickos)
you’ll want to start fresh with this pack. I’m pretty sure it’s got mostly the same stuff but with much better organization and a few new additions. Also some included instructions for games that have quirks/issues.
I can finally delete all these test builds and run the pack as God intended
Just an FYI, we mostly tested this pack with the latest stable core, but there are some issues here and there that are fixed by using the latest unstable build, so if you’re comfortable using that I’d say use that
I know there are at least a few games that need the new keyboard layout options just so you have the right keys available to start the game
and nemesis 90's midi sound works in the unstable
What's different about the external scaler vs MiSTer scaler versions?
@tawdry creek there are a couple core specific settings that are different when using an external scaler that can’t be set in the MiSTer.ini, so that pack has all those games preconfigured. Since we use setnames, it was needed
I believe the core has to be set to “Full Screen” instead of “Original” for the scalers (or something like that)
I am being especially thick. But where's the link?
With my MiSter setup I've got it outputting to an iPad screen, and a 32" 4K monitor. Only the 32" monitor is going via the RT4K. Sounds like it'll be fine, but just stretched out a bit on my iPad screen (which is fine by me, that's not there for accuracy)
The easiest X68000 games setup for MiSTer
Yes
Ooh nice
Good work all involved
fantastic, are more games going to be added when they work on the core? eg salamander
Nice work. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this pack. Looking forward to test it later.
I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but would love to see Adult packs for all the consoles and pc's. What is adult/taboo changes over time. Regardless, it's all games. If I had the time or know how I'd offer to help, but for many of these computers, I'm a newb. I played through Leisure Suite Larry for the first time last year, quite tame now, but I remember it being considered Risque back in the day.
Just voicing some support for it. Fine being labeled a sicko ;-). Also, not in any discounting all the work done. Thanks for all you have done, sincerly!
As someone who grew up playing the LSL games, I hear you. We haven't ruled it out. We just have to decide on whether or not we want to test them 😛
Granted, there are different levels of eroge. Like Bacon's favorite dracula game is pretty tame. Meanwhile, there is a game with a premise so fucking vile I don't even want to talk about it.
Yes, that is the plan
There are still a bunch of disk games that we haven't tested yet - so there may be games that work now that aren't in this pack. As folks request things, we will look at them.
we think we got all the big ones though
Glad you're not ruling it out. Also fair. I'm downloading now. Will have three MiSTer setups ready to go by this week both digital and analog. Happy to test anything, if/when you ever need it.
Mmh, strange. Most games halt at the Human68k DOS screen and don't boot further.
Which core version you use exactly for this pack?
how far does it get in the human68k screen?
does it start loading a game, or does it show like 3 lines and sit
Shows the 3 lines with X68000 terminal V1.0 at the end.
yeah, that means it either isn't loading the hdf or it can't write to it. You kept all the paths the same, yeah?
Yep. Maybe it's confused with my old X68000 setup. I don't know. Will have to look into it.
Dracula X works fine
I have an external SSD. Maybe that's the problem
Yeah, it's the external SSD, just unplugged it. So, i have to copy the games again.
ahh ok - made me nervous there for a second 🙂
Same happend for me with the DOS 0 MHz collection. Copying the "media" folder to "games/x68000" of the SSD should do the trick.
Yes, there is a note about that at least on the main archive page (and hopefully in the readme as well) that you want to move the resulting games folder over to your external storage if that’s where your games are stored
I store my games on my NAS and just did a quick test (Nemesis 90) and its looking good 🫶 Used the External scaler version of the games and it looks fine on my iPad screen. Haven't had a chance to try it out yet with the RT4K
@icy shuttle @eager yacht According to the readme.txt, once expanded, all games should have "/games/,/_Computer/,/config/" folders. If I expand the external scaler folder I see this for all games. However, when games in the MiSTer scaler folder are expanded, almost all of them are missing the 'config' folder. Is this to be expected?
that's correct. the scaler folder has to have a config for each game because scalers require some changes to the core config. Only a couple of games in the normal folder had to have config changes
We found a couple of games would boot more reliably with the turbo CPU, so we enabled it for those games
one notable note for that game is that midi sound only works on the latest unstable core (on the offchance you aren’t already using that one)
Ah good to know. I'm not using unstable atm but my mt32pi isn't plugged either so no smooth midi sounds for me for now
How do i select the mouse in Arkanoid II? You can enter the menu option via controller, but then?
Keyboard is default, but there must be a key for setting joystick or mouse.
Or maybe the keyboard routine doesn't work properly. You can do anything via keyboard in this menu
i think you need the unstable for that one
grandma is the "how do i play this game" whisperer
@amber hemlock it’s funny this was actually one of the games I tested last night and I noticed that the mouse was working for me in the menu but not in the game
I can take a look later and see if I can figure it out
You can use the mouse to start the game, even navigate with it through the other menu options. But the direction/movement isn't working, because you can't set it to "mouse" in the controller settings.
is this just another rompack?
Haven't there been any before? (Just trying to understand the excitement, used the X68000 core just for Cho Ren Sha exclusively before and that worked)
@rancid compass there have been other packs such as the old X68000 starter pack but the difference with Neon68K is that the hard drive images are paired with MGL’s for one click launching and all of the games have also been thoroughly tested and categorized. They have also been categorized by genre.
Also, some games that required specific settings to run properly (i.e. Turbo CPU) have been preconfigured with those settings. The games also use setnames so that if you wanted to save custon configs per game (i.e. mapping keyboard keys to a controller), you can do so right out of the box.
also, the intent here is to iterate on this pack as the core improves and as users give more suggestions for games that could be added. Very similar to the idea of 0 MHz and Amigavision
Thank you. Thus nothing to gain for Cho Ren Sha, I guess. But I am happy that everyone is happy though
The only possible gain for that game is that our pack includes the latest version of that game version 1.10 whereas I’m not sure the old packs had that version
Cho Rensha is awesome though definitely something I want to put more time into playing
Im being dumb, again! I read the instruction in readme. So I Select for example English_Keyboard&Mouse if i extract them it extracts folders for every game, inside of which are copys of /games/
/_Computer/
/config/
but each title has copys of these folders, so do i copy each individual game folder including the 3 Sub folders or am i supposed to be unzipping and gettind one set of /games/ etc containing all titles which i then merge into my sd card?
Im on mac if that is causing issues
you should be unzipping the contents directly to their respective games, _Computer, and config subfolders
instead of extracting each game zip to a folder that shares the name of the parent folder, just extract the contents directly to wherever you’re extracting them to so in the end you should only have the games, _Computer, and config folders (depending on which packs you extract, you may also see a docs folder)
@verbal abyss the github mentions this issue on Mac and suggest using Terminal: https://github.com/Neon68K/neon68k.github.io/blob/main/docs.md
Web site for neon86k.com. Contribute to Neon68K/neon68k.github.io development by creating an account on GitHub.
ahh ok i didnt see the github - where the instruction make total sense. sorry about that
I’ll go back and check that readme and update the other readme so it’s more consistent
Vertical scrolling games with a 512x v resolution scales awfully via Retrotink 4K. Maybe it's the core, it seems far from being perfect
Looks like a flimmering horizontally.
I wonder if that’s a MiSTer.ini setting that needs to be changed 🤔 I don’t know much about the scaler stuff
what game are you looking at JB?
Cyber Core at the moment
flimmering might be my new favorite word btw
glimmer/flimmer whatever. Looks like a horizontal tearing of some kind.
but even, like steps
Typical sign mit scaling issues
shimmering?
Not really
seems ok
Huh, it's far from being ok
I’m sure you did, but you used the files from the external scaler folder?
Of course.
This is so crappy i can see anything. This doesn't prove anything.
But if i look closely enough i can see the horizontal scaling artefacts in your clip.
Then it's good enough for you. I can't stand this kind of issues.
I don’t know what issue you’re seeing. Any aberrations you’re seeing the video are side effects of recording a screen. The horizontal scaling artifacts you think you’re seeing is the profile from the tink
Not really. But i will take a look a the mister scaler games pack later.
If there is a difference
Check again
is it possible that it could be a goofy, turn the MiSTer on/off again, turn the Tink on/off again gremlin issue?
Gemini Wing though looks fine.
interesting
I assure you there are no horizontal scaling artifacts. Make sure your INI is set up properly
X68000 is very strange when it comes to resolutions.
what does the tink say the resolution is when you start the game?
Cyber Core?
yes
Ok, Gemini Wing isn' t fine, it depends on the graphical pattern how strong the scaling issues are. They are there.
Cybercore is a 256x512 game.
i see the issue. we forgot something from the ini. add this: ```[video=256x512]
vscale_mode=1
video_mode=512,1024,60
you're getting artifacts because the tink is scaling the 720/1080 image
@eager yacht can you add ```[video=256x512]
vscale_mode=1
video_mode=512,1024,60
Putting it in the mister.ini?
yeah
that one isn't in the tink wiki - I had to add it myself
and we copied the tink wiki
you can also do [video=256x512] vscale_mode=1 video_mode=256,512,60 which is 1:1 but the mister menu won't render then
I’ll add it, I just have to find where that lives…I know it’s on the github
that's my bad - I forgot about it when we were putting the readme together last night
ok i’ll add it there to the main readme files
Yep, now it's fine. This resolution was really missing in the mister.ini.
yeah, sorry about that - i had a note to make sure we added that one and then just forgot
Are you guys also going to update the website so that https://neon68k.com/docs is more easily discoverable like on the amigavision and 0mhz sites?
The easiest X68000 games setup for MiSTer
yeah, I think that's on Limi's list of to-dos
oh that’s pretty cool
Yeh i just tried it and it unzipped as should
yeah seems like a pretty basic thing to just not have available natively
Actually im having problems with the app...it has not unarchived everything...i will delete the post
could you share?
just checking, does the x68000 play nice with direct video to analog?
Yeah, when I get back home
i send my analog output to a scart splitter output1 to my crt, output2 to a retrotink5x
Good question. I dunno if any of us had that setup
I thought that it doesn't support directvideo? The RT4K wiki basically tells us to disable DV1 for the x68000 core
i’m not using any direct digital to my 5x
I'm not sure what you're asking then if you're not asking about DV1
W I D E screen
i just didn’t know if the core output whatever signal resolution over analog if the analog with driven by the mister direct video
The core also has to support directvideo, which it doesn't
this is fine, if i wanna play x68000 with my setup, i can! no need to change cables just change tink profile settings and done
Yes, it's "Theme of Simon Belmondo" in Japan. However, we all know it's "Theme of Simon Belmont". ;)
This awesome tune plays in the Room of Armors, the Castle Ramparts, The Servants' Chambers, and the Castle Keep, all part of the Final Block of Castlevania Chronicles (Akumajo Dracula X68000).
I love all of the instruments used in this rendition...
First off, this is an awesome pack that I’m looking forward to sinking my teeth into this weekend👍
I have two game requests - Genocide 2 (since 1 is part of the pack), and Lagoon (the much cooler version of the SNES game).
Genocide 2 isn’t compatible with the core, unfortunately. I think it is in the major bugs folder
But now that I say that, I am not sure we shipped the major bugs folder…
where da mgls
I’ll look at lagoon. If you can just make an issue on the GitHub, that will remind me https://github.com/Neon68K/neon68k
check again
Alright, added in the request on GH! Understood if Gencide 2 is a tall order, but I'll keep my fingers crossed. Thanks!
Hey all , i heard that the X68 doesnt run well on a CRT. anyone have experience?
CRT-TV
lol
so... it works through your retrotink?
oh, i was wondering if there was a way to use the Analog PRo board and send signal out to a CRT with the Saturn cable -> component
looks like we didn't have that one on our list, but I just found a multi-game HDF that has it. I tried it and it didn't boot....then I found a forum note that mentions you have to boot it from pure DOS, so I followed those instructions and it worked the graphics are unfortunately very garbled
damn shame, seems like it's awesome
damn
The OST is awesome on that one
and if you're into "bump mechanics" RPGs, that's one for the books... or so I hear
I only ever played through the SNES version, and well... that one doesn't fare as well
Listen to those bonus tracks at the end of the ost for some peak early 90s neo-hippie Japanese music
Note: I know one of you sent me this soundtrack and I want to credit you, but I sadly can't remember which one of you it was! So if you are reading this, please let me know :)
This is MUCH better quality as it is ripped from the legit soundtrack, instead of me just making video of the game. Again, in my opinion, one of the best overall soundtra...
oh, I was talking about Genocide 2, sorry! Haven't tried Lagoon yet
oh yeah, genocide 2 is effed - I'm surprised it's not on the spreadsheet
I swear I played it
Ok, Mouse works in Arkanoid II. You have to use the numpad arrow keys in the controller select menu to turn the mouse on
for some reason, the standard arrow keys work in the first menu, but only the numpad arrows work in the controller menu. numpad works fine for both menus, though
We missed a game with the release so we will likely add it soon. We are trying to figure out if there is a way we can have folks automatically update the set as we add things to it
I don't have a numpad on my Rii mini keyboard. Bad luck..
ah damn
yeah, I have one of those too and it doesn't have one...I have a KVM that I use to switch my desktop keyboard over when needed
And i can't use the Sharp "Help Key". Only works with a real US layout. Double bad luck!
Virtual keyboard work (hold right click)?
This mostly doesn't work for the games. It shows up a few seconds and then it's gone.
Yeah, it’s the Hail Mary. We couldn’t figure out why it’s seemingly disabled in some games
Might be a resolution thing
hmm some games it doesn't work for, but a lot it seemed to work
I gave up after 4-5 in a row didn't work.
are you using the latest unstable?
Yep, the february 2025 iirc.
Help key can't work, maybe with a full non US keyboard. But the mini doesn't have the key.
A US Rii might work.
oh right yeah
A lot of X68000 games allow you to select the 15KHz mode via the Help key.
The set is structured enough that it'd be easy enough to bang up a script to run on the MiSTer. Only problem with that is once you do it people start asking when it'll get added to update_all 😂
Mugen Senshi Valis II is now Neon-ified...somehow we missed that the HDF with the translated version works fine
Would be no big loss, the Valis games are boring anyway.
I like them alright, but to each their own. This version is not great gameplay-wise, but it's a series people know
Are the English friendly games generally patched/translated?
or is it more of a "not that much text in the game to begin with, making it playable even if one doesn't understand JP"?
the latter. other than Valis II, I'm not sure how many other translations are in there
Gotcha, perfect 👍
For what it's worth, just putting it out there that I for one would love to have all the the non-translated versions available, although I understand I'm probably in the minority here, and that it might require extra work on your side. So no pressure at all👍
Basically, our strategy was that if you could get to (and understand) gameplay, we put it in the main english folder. We didn't want folks to miss out on good games like Étoile Princesse just because they were in japanese.
I was wondering if we couldn't add something to downloader to grab them - like the arcade roms db
That sounds like a totally fair strategy
@shadow portal one of the issues with Valis II was that the non-translated HDFs we had do not boot for some reason
it was a memory thing. we haven't yet figured out the incantation to unlock the extra memory some games needed
Right right, not to mention that the core IS WiP, so that goes with the territory
I couldn't get this to unzip correctly even using terminal. Obviously it's me as noone else having issues. I'll sort it on a window laptop later. Looking forward to testing
Regarding keyboard mapping, I wonder if this might be useful for programmer type people?
It's a device that converts USB keyboards to actual X68000, but within the Arduino code is the mapping. So someone has already worked out how to map keyboard to normal keyboard.
I use it on my X68000's as I don't have original keyboards and I can use all keys on a USB keyboard -
https://github.com/Guddler/x68Key
Is there any issue with the current keyboard mapping on the core ?
I honestly dont kno wt eff im doing wrong, but even on a windoze machine with 7zip it still extracts everything to seperate folders
And there is no right click 7zip option present. Its a clunky old laptop that doesnt belong to me
But however i try to tackle it with 7zip it just unzips everything to individual game folders...I never had these issues with Amigavision...nevermind Its obviously something super simple im not doing correctly, but its frustrating.
open up 7zip, look for an options menu, there should be something in options or tools that says "integrate 7-zip to shell context menu" or something like that
Ok bear with...though I'm pretty sure I enabled that option. Just rebooting the pc
No extract or extract here options despite me checking them in the settings
someone else had that issue when I was googling. Try running 7zip as the administrator
Yeh this is run as administrator.
weird. winrar has similar options - maybe try installing that?
Ok I'll try winrar if not I think I'm going to switch back to my Mac and try again there although
I also followed the terminal command in the GitHub Mac instructions with no joy.
I tried to figure out how to export a preset in better zip, but I don't see how. These are the setting I used
Ooh cool. Hold on just trying winrar.
that lets me select all the archives, extract them, and then just choose "merge" for everything
Ok it's looking good for winrar
Lemme see what's what.
But I will set up betterzip with your settings too jic or for future reference. Less time spent in this windows laptop the better tbh it's nearly been launched out the window lol.
huh, that’s weird, you weren’t getting the “extract here” option in the 7-zip context menu
No. Not at all. I dunno why like I said the laptop is clunky as hell and 7zip said it was running in OneDrive!?!
Ok so all copies to SD card and present. Do I need to update the core? I chose a game from the categorised menu and just got a black screen.
I have unstable 25.03.25 in unstable menu and 24.05.24 in computer menu
The easiest X68000 games setup for MiSTer
So.....who wants to make a downloader script for that, like 0MHz ;p
Seems to be working 👌
Gotta go back to work now but will be going thru the shooters later
Thanks
I thought some people here and on MiSTer Website had issues.
In my mind it would make sense to make the mapping the same as users on the largest English language X68000 forum (nfgames) have used.
Yes maybe it is a specific mapping I don't know one proposed on nfgames.
But the one on the core permits to have access to all keys and described how to use it.
Yeah, it’s figuring out which keyboard you need
only the unstable core gives the option to change keyboard layouts at the moment, though
yes it is not released yet !
I find it delightfully unhinged that my set up shouldn’t work, but does
I haven’t fucked with dv on the x68k in a while. I wonder what the issue is
Tower of Druaga video didn’t want to appear but again this is a very hackey solution I’m using so not too much of a shock.
That may be a 24khz game (21? I dunno, there is one in the middle of 15 and 31)
Works fine on my OLED. Strange resolution and refresh rate: 224x560@52,9Hz.
yes plenty
If you try Syvalyon you will be amazed on the atrac mode the resolution changed every minutes
essentially I’m using a dual sdram with direct video to analog dac set to 15khz
Direct output isn’t actually supported on this core or if it is support is broken
so i’m not surprised it’s particular output is giving my scaler a hard time
Terra Cresta: Another strange one: 224x496. It needs an entry for this resolution in the mister.ini. Scaling is wrong without.
Ok, I would do like 448x992
As soon as I’m in front of my pc, I can post it. We should add it to the wiki
Yep, i tested it. Works fine.
Sorry for missing that one. I thought we got all the eccentric resolutions - and I wasnt testing them all on my tink
Prince of Persia is funny too. Strong dithering in a 768x512 resolution.
I’m off today so I can look at both of those after lunch
Thanks for checking these, Jack
I’ll make sure I check on the tink next time
Going forward, I should say
PoP is fine, i just meant the high resolution ingame
I dunno if that game just isn’t optimized, or if the core is having trouble with it, but it felt like it was right on the edge of what was playable
And only with turbo on
Second button seems like pause. Very annoying. The game is playable with just one button and joypad up.
Yes. That 2nd button pause threw me for a loop. We had that game in the “not working” column for a bit until Grandma checked it
I was like “I dunno, it keeps freezing on me”
Thought the same for a moment. Hehe
It good that you can configure the joypad controls per game. Makes sense. Some games change the layout for e.g. shooting and jumping.
Pac-Land. Another one for the mister.ini: 304x448
ahh good one, I'll add it - I don't think we looked much at the minor bugs one
try 1:1 and let me know if the menu shows up
vscale_mode=1
video_mode=304,448,60```
It works fine, but doesn't fill the full screen. Also tried 608x896, the same
Ah, put in the wrong section. It works fullscreen.
thats the vscale - it’s just doing pure integer scaling (which gets rid of those scaling artifacts). So if it can’t get a whole number scale factor to fill the screen, it will use the closest one it can
Did the menu show up with the 304,448 line?
What menu, it don't see any? Just a green glitch at the start. Then the title screen where you start the game.
No, I mean the mister menu
for instance, if you use the 256x512 modeline, the menu doesn't render (that's why I made it 512x1024(
the menu is there you just cannot see it
Mister menu is fine in 304,448
perfect, thanks duder
But i'm always using the 4K Tink, never tried the pack with the plain Mister scaler.
no that's fine - those settings are for the tink anyway
I have enjoyed me some X68000 lately. So many great games to try out!
Is a pre-made Neo68K pack available somewhere?
bruh
#1351743248850227360 message
👀
Ok so where are the MGLs in the pack
In the _Computer/X68000 Games subfolder of every game.
he's trolling you - don't let him win
The classic boy who cried wolf story! Robby has brought this calamity unto himself!
Please, sweet baby jesus, use this at your own risk https://github.com/Neon68K/Automatic-Updater-Script/tree/main
If you happen to know how to write scripts and want to optimize that, I know the author would appreciate that
Thank you 👍
Oh fancy!
Here's are more games for the mister.ini (for better scaling via RT4k): Xevious 456x512, Mahou Daisakusen: 248x512
Unless someone beats me to it I'll have a look tomorrow night or over the weekend 👌
Project Z Fourth Edition Revival Products of X68000 SUPER/XVI
Make a downloader script?
@amber hemlock do you have to add ini settings for each individual game for specific res? Haven't started messing with Neon yet
love it.
I signed up for this a while back. Man I wan one so bad....importing one is expensive, I fear they won't be cheap even if they get a UK re-seller
I am with you. I found a place that either has (or will be) taking preorders...but I would rather not pay the middleman
I found some of the older models on eBay Japan sellers but they almost £600 plus shipping and customs 😂 that's a lot of moolah for what is essentially a mini emulation console...albeit a dead sexy bit of kit
yep, I was very close to buying one, but @river mango talked me out of it. The new ones are easier to deal with, apparently
yeah you DONT want one haha
the XVI has a spot for an ITX motherboard too, so might be able to do a x68k + llama build
The new ones are (supposedly) better!
You can’t stop @icy shuttle
He will buy it
And actually give a really level headed review and nice impressions
Dude is the only person I know outside of YouTube and professional reviewers to do that
good job man
added. thanks, Jack
@grand mulch i was told you had a way to get this core working on a CRT monitor? That true?
wait what
i’m using analog video out with my direct video mister
but it’s not displaying on a 15khz tube
and it only displays on my 4k because my tink5x can stretch the video out
ah, i understand the misunderstanding
Ohhhhh ok
Ooh
So 15hz monitors are still incompatible?
Not just for X68000, is there a "complete" list somewhere of all the weird resolutions that should be added to ini for a Tink user?
The System-Specific Settings page is all about highlighting how you can use the RetroTINK-4K's various features to improve the experience of using your video game systems beyond just plugging them in. This can range from setting 1:1 pixel aspect ratio for Super Game Boy on the SNES, to dovetailing with the Sharpscale Plugin on the PlayStation TV...
So the tink wiki has some (but their x68k list isn't as complete as this one)
ah, dave beat me to it
It's a wiki so we should be able to get it updated right?
Oh, sad trombone
when grandma starts working on the 0mhz collection, we will likely grab additional resolutions there as well
it was weird because 256x512 is a pretty common x68k resolution
Odd, he seems like the exact person who would be interested
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Iirc he's less of a MiSTer person than a tink/real hw person tho
yeah, both the tink guys and the morph guys are seemingly more annoyed by mister stuff. i get it - DV is such a weird spec
Yeah, and stuff like x68k ups the weirdness a lot
What does this mean, starts working on 0Mhz collection.
Maybe I should rephrase, is the 0Mhz collection not complete as is?
I figured it was just the x86 stuff out and down and then other projects would have diff names, like Neon
A lot of vertical scrolling games (commerical and homebrew) seems to use 256x512. Most static title screens are in 512x512.
The 0mhz collection as is is just a handpicked collection of dos games. That libray is huge, so it will never be "complete". Grandma wants to add some stuff though
Those modes should be handled by the x68k modelines too (since the modelines themselves are not platform specific)
Probably.
Gotcha
I know there's a buuuuuuttload of other games ppl have added outside of 0MHz project page on IA
yep, the hope is to treat it more like amigavisiona and neon68k with more regular updates
Do you think it will ever have a fancy menu you load into like Amiga Vision, or does it just not work the same way (or worth the effort)
something I have found is that there are folks who much prefer the individual format, rather than having a large hard drive image to download (which isn't even possible on the x68k core at the moment).
part of the reason we wanted to do an update script was because it gives folks the best of both worlds. Automation if you don't want to fiddle with the install (and just want everything) and the ability to pick and choose if you'd prefer to not have everything
But we need more fixes for the core. I hope somebody will pick up on Puu-Sans work. I doesn't seem he will actively work on it in a forseeable time.
that was one of our hopes with this set - get folks interested and, in turn, hopefully get a dev interested
because the system is so cool and so few people outside of japan know about it
Makes perfect sense
Yeah, its a nice way to dip your toes in without all the setup/overhead
So is this collection good. Should I do it.
Also as a casual, should I avoid the JP folder?
does every game have its own config?
only if you have an external scaler
I'd have to think about that. Cho Ren Sha 68k is definitely on there. Akumajou Dracula of course. Is there a better game that Ah! Ohime-sama? probably not. Mad Stalker is real good too, but I think that's on other systems as well, so I dunno if that is the best version.
There are a lot of great arcade games too - but we have arcade cores for most of them.
The Jotei Senki games are Mugen before Mugen
The Bosconian port is really good
doesn’t come with one (except for the 4k scaler games and games that have Turbo enabled by default), but if you save any settings with a game loaded it saves a specific config for that game/setname
is anyone able to save thier progress on Neon68k
i just got to level 5 on Akumajou Dracula and went to reset and my progress is gone
it never did that to me on the old setup
Ouch
It’s using the same HDF as the other packs (because they use alchemy to boot it). So something else must be afoot
do you guys have pre saved files on your akumajou dracula HDF?
cause mine had 3 saved already and i deleted them , made a new one, and now my save is gone and those are back
Weird. And yeah, mine do too
I was able to get it to save only by losing all my lives and then selecting save.
But yes, it did save after that.
Even without midi, the music quality seems very good in general on the X68000
Internal sound is better than any outboard MIDI pretty much all of the time
I didn’t have audio when I played Castlevania. Need to delete my config to see whys that.
Whats the best option for an mt32 -pi any suggestions?
Are you in the US?
Canada
well I dunno what import shit looks like there, but if you want one with no fuss, just grab a Pi 3A and the hat from either Pork (ships from Idaho), or Legacy Pixels (ships from Ohio).
If you have access to a 3d printer, you can get a little more fancy and grab this hat (shipped from Portugal - out of stock at the moment but they usually restock quickly, in my experience). You’ll need a pi zero 2w (the one with the headers soldered on) for that. Then there are a variety of good cases you can print (which I’ll dig up if you go that route.)
Finally, if you want to pay a premium, my absolute favorite is the mt32-pi Lite from Ricardo. There are a bunch of caveats with that (depending on what case you’re using). But if everything lines up, it’s the slickest looking one.
Importing anything sucks
Lol
But worse now obv
So pi 3a
Kk ill look into this further
Does the Ricardo one work with the Mister Pi?
yep, but what case are you using?
The Mister Pi Acrylic case
yup, it will work, but you need to either loosen the top, or sand it down a bit because the lite sits a little higher on the case
I see, thanks for the heads up! 😄
I will steal @polar silo's image:
which reminds me, I need to print a shim and see if that helps...
it's hard to see but they just cut the acrylic out
I actually didn't cut the acrylic
I did shim it but wanted to make a shim layer sort to speak
oh did you end up printing one?
i think taki's case has a step file. If so, I will see if I can make one...
Just needed a tiny bit more height to clear and my kit had 2 sets of mounting
oh you just used the nuts? that's a good idea too
And there were 3 different heights of those spacers
So I used the medium one which gave the case just enough height to clear it
And then yea used nuts on the top
how does it look from the side? is it obviously not sitting flush?
The only downside is the sides do rattle because of the loose fit
Sits flush with the standoffs but yea
Because of the gap the sides are loose... Not high enough for them to fall out though
A printed spacer probably would be the better solution
@polar silo I need to dry out some transparent PETG but if you have a printer and want to try
wait, I'm a fool, don't use that
.75mm shim
1mm
Yeah but... The core doesn't support saving back to HDF so how?
it supports saving
the core can write on HDF.
The saving is drived by the game.
Seriously? Is it recent? I've been trying to get this working for months and have even had discussions in this channel with others who were on the same page.
what game are you trying to save?
the hdf you used how it is generated ? normally Akumajou is on floppies
You can install it on the HDF adn patch the exe to make it save ?
but if the HDF is emulated the floppies with application the save may not work (never tried it)
I got it in a pack, and it's akumajou dracula
Trying again presently but running update all first
Weird. I'll give it another go. It does seem like odd behavior that it wouldn't delete the save from the HD when you delete it in game.
Indeed. You need to delete the existing profiles in the game. Start a new profile. Play until you lose all your lives. Then save. And only then will the previous profiles you deleted will stay deleted.
An explanation would be that a lot of games were made arcade-like, to be completed in one sitting
Haha with the difficulty on that game it's a tall order. I'm pretty decent at it but it can be punishing (Tower of Dolls).
I gave up trying to beat it pretty quickly when I got the impression that it wouldn't save
But yeah that makes sense
Basically, you're not living up to Konami's expectations.
they should have made a baby version for westerners
Ahh, he knew. He even said so in an interview after the fact about how many people wrote to them saying they couldn't get past the third level or some such.
But yeah, it's my first real foray into Castlevania so I do need to git gud
I hope you have an mt32-pi set up
But of course! Watching youtube videos of people playing MT-32 supported games on MiSTer was a big draw for me getting my MiSTer Pi. I think I ordered them the same day.
They basically did with the PS1 version!
is the arranged version easier?
It is.
I forget exactly what all the differences are. But if I remember correctly, you have more control over your jumps, and maybe some tweaks to damage knockback as well.
that almost feels like cheating
Looked it up, and there were actually difficulty options in arranged mode, and there is no knockback at all when taking damage (regardless of difficulty).
definitely cheating
Props to @grave jacinth for adding x68k to SAM. It's not working in the normal list at the moment, but you can activate it with MiSTer_SAM_on.sh x68k
Just to follow up on this^^, once you run that command, it will work in the normal list
So i guess the answer to this is still "yes"
Most games are running in 31KHz default anyway.
Welp, guess it's hdmi for the time being
Plain 15KHz TVs/monitors will always be problematic. Most (if not all) games start in 31KHz resolutions. You can change some of them later ingame to 15KHz lowres resolutions. Some can be forced to 15KHz mode while pressing the Sharp X68000 "Help" key at the game boot. So, it makes sense to have a multisync capable display.
Another problem with Sharp games in 15KHz and 60Hz capable CRT TVs: Even if the games are in lowres, the refresh rate is beyond 60Hz, 60.5Hz-61.5Hz is what i see often enough. Probably out of range for most simple consumer TVs. The core allows to switch to "60fps", which means a 59.9Hz output, but the CRT output is still black while the game sound is playing.
Ah, you have to disable/ set vga_scaler=0, then the 15KHz games are working on my Sony consumer TV!!!
Of course you can't see the boot sequence with the Sharp DOS, but after the game is loaded you can play it. Try Daimaikamura/Ghouls'n Ghosts.
Nice, that’s great to hear. There was a composite video encoder for the Sharp X68000 which made me suspect that consumer CRTs should work, but I’ve only tested with a 15khz PVM
The working rate isn't that high. But all Capcom games i've tested so far are fine (Final Fight, Street Fighter II, Daimaikamura).
Nice! Ill give it a shot
Things like this really make me wish we could have more than 3 alt configs
So why is this such an issue for x68k specifically? Cus ive played plenty of other pc cores on my 15hz monitor without much issue
I wonder why only the Capcom games are working fine. I can set other games to lores 15KHz too, but they run only with a black screen and music playing.
maybe refresh rate?
Not really
Oh wait
at 15khz, isn’t it under the HDMI spec?
since we aren’t letting the mister scale the image up
ehh, I suppose you wouldn’t get sound then
I dunno. computers
Using the analog out directly via VGA to Scart RGB cable bypasses HDMI stuff anyway. I don't use a HDMI to VGA adapter.
The core itself has no issues to play 15KHz lores games with HDMI, just as info.
you’re right, i played 15khz games while testing
I didn't check lately the issues
but it seems worth to check
I did see that - I haven't had a chance to test it
are we not worried that it's a 1 step forward, 3 steps back situation?
yeah, we have a spreadsheet for compatability, so we can reference that
would be a huge win if that works
Salamander and Phalanx the issues are also on Puu-san core
yeah, I didn't think there was a build where the issue wasn't present
Nemesis '94 I don't know what is missing on the current core ...
it's like a z ordering issue I think - the sprite is behind the background?
I can't remember
Loads into a game fine, but the playfield is black (you still get the hud). is what I wrote
I have a pastebin with graphical issues of plenty of games so I will check those to see if any are better
On phalanx the sprites are good but sounds not ok on HDF.
I will check floppies to see if I have the same behaviour
on floppies sound is ok (maybe my hdf)
https://github.com/wwark/X68000_MiSTer/commit/08755f7281d1345454213230175d19a432436858
need plenty of tests 🙂
Baruusa No Fukushuu is little better
Marble Madness is great now
Baraduke is also better but still have issues (left new core, right previous core)
Calmetry 🙂
Genocide 2
Hellhound (sprites are visible now)
Thanks for compiling the new version. Looks good so far.
that’s awesome!
awesome! I saw similar sprite issues in twinbee at a couple sections I noted a while back. I'll check that out again with the core
thanks for bringing some much-needed improvements to x68k @mental pine!
So will this latest build work with the .mgl files that the Neon68K setup uses? Or does something need to be tweaked or renamed for them to boot up this rbf?
@true flame easiest thing to do is rename this newest build to just X68000
That's what I thought would be the case! Thanks for the confirmation. 👍
have to rename the other or remove it or move it to a different folder
Yeah, otherwise it would just overwrite it.
well no because the date codes would be different, but the mgl might load the wrong one
Where’s the newest build?
It does.
Oh good
And Robby lost the "Find the core between the pics" game.
Haha
Thanks dude, pinned it
Exiting Hour Jusse Oozumou.hdf always ask for memory, it doesn't seems to work.
is that in the Neon68K pack?
I think that’s in major bugs?
Nice one.
latest version for the core is this one X68000_dma_and_intcont_changes_20250516.rbf
As far as I know, that’s the a test build. We need to figure out if it’s too many steps back
does the latest build include the midi fixes?
I believe so
the latest build contains midi fixes (branch of the changes)
https://github.com/wwark/X68000_MiSTer/commits/INTcont_puusan_update/
But this changes have a speed issue for certains games so it better to navigate between builds (regarding game) until a correct fixes is found
https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/X68000_MiSTer/issues/43#issuecomment-2888238680
oh does that fix midi on final fight?
no
One of the first games I tested as well.
so, any updates on the neon project?
At some point I am going to look at d88 games. I'd like to do a config for CRTs. I was kind of waiting on whether or not the revert that rebel proposed was going to be merged, but it doesn't seem like it
Thanks to @tawdry creek for updating this. It's a real script now https://github.com/Neon68K/Automatic-Updater-Script/tree/main ❤️
Any chance that this script could optional read/detect installed Neon68k configs/games on an external drive/SSD? I mean the script downloads everything to the SD card, though i tend to have it on my SSD. I only want to download the updates or new games directly to the SSD path.
dave had an idea for that
Does your SSD get mounted to something like /media/usbX?
Yep, it's media/usb0 actually
Cool 👍 I've got a solution that works, just doing some polishing
Great! Looking forward to test it.
I am also looking forward to test your solution.
Fucking @tawdry creek killing it https://github.com/Neon68K/Automatic-Updater-Script/pull/6
@amber hemlock ^^
Thanks for the update. The script downloads now to SSD, but ALL games. Even if i select just die Updates.
@amber hemlock if you run do updates does it download everything again?
Yep, the whole package as it seems. I mostly stop at letter f or something.
If you kill it before it completes downloading everything it won't write the file that tracks when it was fully run
So, what should i do? Run it once completely and then it works for "Updates only" after that?
Yes
FWIW the script has always downloaded all games first, then done updates after that.
Now that it can at least install games to a custom path I can probably add a feature for selecting games if that's what people want
I'm not after certain games, i just wanted to get the new or corrected games. But i'll run it now completely, then try the "Updates" option again.
At that point the "Updates" option shouldn't download anything then, right? I mean i'm getting now the most recent package.
It should print out messages like this:
Checking for updates
Fetching archive metadata...
Starting sync...
Fetching file list...
Performing incremental sync.................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Sync complete.
Done.
It shows me exactly this. So, it's working fine. Thanks again, very convenient script.
Glad it was just that 😁 you had me second guessing myself
Well, i had all games already installed of course. But not via your script. That confused me for a second when it downloaded everything.
Yeah, due to various reasons its not easy to look at files that already have been downloaded by some other process to figure out what needs updating/syncing, so for now its a pretty blunt instrument
I wonder if adding something at the beggining that says “do you already have neon68k on your machine? (Answering ‘no’ will trigger a full download)” and if they say yes we just set the marker then
Yeah, I could do that
I can look at it in the morning. You don’t need to shoulder all of it, duder 🙂
Its all good. I was about to raise another PR anyhow to tidy/reorder some logic so that it doesn't print the up/down/left/right on the first run or if a full download is triggered
added you to the github so you don't have to wait for me :p
😄
Oh no
No no no no
These models also have enough room to add an entire Nano ITX system inside
Squeeze a MiSTer in there!!!
Looks like an ARM based system
@river mango I need you to talk me out of this
Omg. Yeah for $1000 you could probably get a real X68000 system
It does look tempting though
I’d have to re cap it
don't understand why it's so expensive tbh
i imagine it's literally just the branding
I just want to see a MiSTer in the expansion bay
Get this bundle, you deserve it!
That’s what we call a twofer
Two X68000s, as a treat
It’s for my work
Don't forget to claim it as a tax deduction
Cheap emulation device for that price. Half this price you buy pcs, portables with better specs.
It’s easy. Dont buy it
Until it’s tested. Their first unit is still riddled with “wtf why???” weirdness
Like I’m never taking those things back out of the box
Buy a real X68000 instead.
I don’t have the skills to recap it
this seller could probably recap it for you, I recall him having a listing for X68000 repairs at $150.
He sold me my X68000 Compact and I’ve used it every day for over 2 years with no issues yet
these are the kind of prices I have been seeing for a 68k https://www.ebay.com/itm/396584353222
I know I just linked an eBay seller but generally speaking eBay prices for X68000 are absolutely crazy compared to going rates on Yahoo Japan auctions
Take this for instance
Fully refurbished XVI for about half of what the eBay seller is asking
Of course it may go higher than this since it’s a bid but probably not all the way to over $2000
yeah, but it's also just the unit. I wonder if zuiki is going to sell the peripherals separately
Ah fair
the prices of these things is asnine across the board, full stop
and I also don't need one
but I wants
Yeah it’s true. I had wanted one for years before finally getting one in 2023, and it has indeed hurt my wallet quite a bit
There was the computer itself, then I needed a mouse and keyboard which were like $300, then an expansion card for midi and ram, then midi modules, and then you need an external audio mixer to mix all the audio together
And then of course the video output is nonstandard so you need a way to deal with that
But despite all the pain, I had a lot of fun figuring out how to get the setup to work. And the games are really good so that helps
I had a bunch of fun futzing around while we were building neon68k. it was just always such a bummer when a game wouldn't work on the core
I could just boot the giant scsi image into the windows emulator
but that feels dirty
I hope to help with the X68000 core one day, it would be nice to see a really good core. I’m still kinda bad at HDL programming but I have been practicing on smaller projects
Oh wow it’s pricey
I’d like to see my hack of Akumajou Dracula running on MiSTer at some point. I’m sure it runs now but it would be pointless
All it does is make the game render at 15khz
And since mister x68000 doesn’t support direct video it doesn’t do anything there
Sorgelig said that the pixel clock would make it difficult to support direct video, and I’m sure he’s right
I think it can change based on what mode the game picks
yeah. same issue as ao486 iirc
Well the core automatically scales to 800x600 if I recall correctly, I think you can then downscale it
no, it's real 240p
if you use Pu's core, it's 800x600
but that core isn't built for mister
Oh nice, glad to hear that
but because it doesn’t use direct video, if you’re pumping it into a scaler, you need to use all sorts of custom video modes to make sure it scales correctly
otherwise the mister scaler will do it
Does anyone know how to boot Daimakaimura to use the MT32? I can't seem to find how to do it.
I’m trying to find the doc, but I think you have to hold a specific kanji key on the JPN keyboard
Oh wait, that one hangs after selecting midi
It doesn't have a dedicated MT32 soundtrack does it? I thought you just set it to midi and picked a sound font with fluid synth.
Correct, Daimakaimura is GM MIDI. So you’d want an SC-55
It actually worked in the March release but I'm getting hanging again on the May release currently. I'll try again later.
hold down print screen key on the keyboard when you load the game, or use a mouse load the game quickly press the right button to bring up the on screen keyboard and move over to the special key and hold left but you have to be quick
Hi Jesus,
just wanna grap this personal topic ...
Has this issue been forwarded regarding for some " special " monitors where
the regular setup dont work ?
Using the Acer XF270HU
Have you tried adding these to your mister.ini? https://neon68k.com/docs
The easiest X68000 games setup for MiSTer
nope... ive just tried these different custom ini you and the guys made in here....
I will add and try it out 👍
yeah, we did some tinkering since you were last in here. I’m hopeful one of those works
Great dev work... Feedback comming later this day
ha, it is just stuff on the mister side. I wish we had the skill to work on the core 🙂
OK tested it with the additional lines in INI...
Boot of the X68000 goes in fullscreen but than its black again...i can hear the sound of a Game
but cant bring back the OSD...
Need to blind cheat with Menu left Up Up
Here is my current Ini
I don't think this fixes things. But maybe we will get lucky 🙂
Nope same issue... guess its the monitor cause lots of people playing the X68000 :/ gonna check another monitor
When I try and use the core, the screen freaks out. I'm using a PAL TV that can do 60Hz (I think) and I'm using the MiSTer HDMI-to-SCART adapter
what happens if you change the refresh rate in the audio & video options
I'm not sure how I can navigate the menu
What's the inputs needed to navigate the menu since I'm basically blind like this
I think I have to push right once to go the video menu
And then I'm lost
I can’t look right now, but I can look in a second. In the meantime, try adding this to your mister.ini
direct_video=0
vga_scaler=1
vsync_adjust=1
vscale_mode=1
video_mode=1320,120,160,180,240,5,10,9,27000```
It's still unstable, but it's definitely improved
Try vsync_adjust 0
In the x68000 section in the mister.ini?
No luck, it still flickers
Are you sure? I tried that and nothing seems to happen
I'm just toggling between another menu
unfortunately, it may be that your tv doesn't support it. the 68k can be weird with non-monitor crts
is the x68000 version of bubble bobble the best on home consoles? i just played it and it seems really close to the arcade version with the added benefit that i dont have to set up TATE MODE
it seems like it might be a port of the atari st version but i'm not sure
the playstation version is about as arcade-perfect as you can get i think
Hi! I have been trying to get the X68000 core working on my MiSTer Pi FPGA (Mega Pack edition) for months and I keep getting a black screen. I am using the most recent core (X68000_20240524.rbf, 3.5 MB), I believe I have all the needed BIOS files in the right place (see screenshot), and I am using the MiSTer.ini file that @icy shuttle posted earlier this year to help another user. I have tried the previous core (68000_20221022.rbf), but the problem is the same. I have attached my Pi on multiple displays and the same problem arises. When I load a game, I get the black screen, but I get the OSD when I press F12. I have no problems with any of the other cores. Any help appreciated. Let me know if there is any other information I can provide. Thanks!
what are you plugging into?
display wise
if you're seeing the OSD, that leads me to believe it's a bios issue, but the bios looks correct
Ok, so
- what kind of display are you plugging into?
- What are you storing your files on (SD? Hard Drive? Network Share?)
- Other roms that are stored in the same place work ok?
I’m plugging into an Innoview 15.8” 1080p display. I’ve tried it on my 4K display with my PC and same problem. (I also have a Beetronics 4:3 1024x768 monitor and can try that in the next couple of days.) I’m storing files on SD. All other roms for the other consoles and computers are working ok. I’m wondering if it’s related to the MiSTer Pi hardware at all, so it would be good to hear from anyone who has gotten the X68000 core to work on the MiSTer Pi.
I have it working on several mister pi’s 🙂
I'm using the core on a MiSTer Pi just fine as well
Great to hear!
Gimme a sec and I can share my misterini
So I am using the mister.ini that you posted a few months ago and worked for another user (though they got a magnified screen iirc). You can see the one I’m using as an attachment in my initial post above.
I saw. I was going to suggest trying vscale mode 4
