Trying to figure out what Im doing wrong. I have the MegaDrive unstable core from 3/31/2026, and I my MiSTer downloads the unstable mister_mains, but I am getting no background music in any of the MD+ games.

warm carbon
#

you need to install the unstable mister main. update won't install them - it just downloads them

plain quiver
#

-rework the exeptions (sh2test) -fix the decoding of an invalid LRU (sh2test) -fix associative purge for cache (sh2test) -some optimization

The core needs a "CACHE_VALID" module added to the sh_mem file.

It's a seperate script. At least for me anyways

i got mine from here

#

I dunno how specific cores work, but that should put on the latest unstable mister main, which you can verify at your mister menu cause it'll show you the date of the mister main that is running

#

What files do you have zipped?

#

The Genesis roms?

atomic socket
#

I have left the .md, the .cue and all wave files each in their own individual zip files

#

for each game

glad aurora
#

I convered all my games to CHD

#

before that, i used bin/cue format

#

all games were unzipped

#

and cd based games in thier own folders

atomic socket
#

Im unzipping them now to try

edgy ruin
plain quiver
#

Don't zip your CD images files, only villains do that.

velvet mural
#

CD systems don't support zip for any part of CD images

#

CHD is supported, but I hear there may be some specific settings that work best. Best choice is to just keep the image files raw

ivory shale
#

There are some recommended settings that help with the PlayStation core if you increase the read speed, but beyond that the only issue with using CHD are disc images that have an index 2 or later, which are uncommon

atomic socket
#

Thanks everyone, unzipping fixed it. I will say that if you start a game prior to mixing in the music in the core's menu, it doesn't come on until you reload the game.

plain quiver
#

@fallow dome Could you pin the newest core revision ?

Thanks.

It seems that tate is less useful nowadays. TVs are larger, they have enough resolution that you can see all the pixels without rotating, and no overscan.

Achshually, Tate is what Super Mario 2 was originally called in Japan because it was a game called Doki Doki Vert in the US and they reskinned it for the Japanese market.

#

Of course, shit went sideways really fast with that move...

proper agate
#

Mario 2 was called Mario Mario in Japan. It was a double play on words based on it being the second game, and also on Mario's last name also being Mario ( which is why they are the Mario Bros).

sweet fjord
#

wondering if Golden Axe III is somehow busted on the MD core?
It slows down absolutely horribly when even a single enemy comes onscreen, it's very bad. But footage on YouTube seems to show it maintaining 100% gamespeed most of the time, very different from MiSTer. Does anyone with experience w/ the game know if the MiSTer slowdown is accurate or a bug?

faint onyx
#

I don't notice any noticable slowdowns with the current core version.

sweet fjord
#

huh
also, there's sometimes a lot of sprite glitching with little lines and such appearing around sprites, like a less severe case of Strider on the NES

#

i've tried multiple ROM versions, so it's not the ROMs

faint onyx
#

What core version do you use exaclty?

sweet fjord
#

latest, just ran update all

faint onyx
#

Try the latest WIP

sweet fjord
#

(i was ready to lambast this game on my Backloggd for its performance issues, lol)

warm carbon
#

which mister stack do you have?

glass shale
#

No issues here on latest stable

sweet fjord
#

og DE10-Nano, original analog i/o, BlisSTer, 128MB RAM, passes but does not excel the speed test

robust flax
#

Whats a blisster?

sweet fjord
#

an outdated competitor of SNAC that required its own hardware

faint onyx
#

Does it need modded core versions, i don't remember

warm carbon
#

Maybe try a different rom file, just incase there is something funky with the only have

sweet fjord
warm carbon
#

but you can run the standard cores too - just can't use the blisster stuff

faint onyx
#

Then it's maybe based on a very old core version

sweet fjord
#

to be clear i haven't used a LLAPI core in several years, hehe

glass shale
warm carbon
#

I would definitely check the rom, Wave. Is it the US rom?

glass shale
#

Worth trying to nuke the core settings as well

faint onyx
#

Aren't the LLAPI cores based on the older Genesis core anyway?

glass shale
#

She said she’s not using the LLAPI core

#

But yeah, I would stay away from those and just use the official ones

#

Check the rom md5, nuke the core settings, hard reboot

faint onyx
#

An original DE10 nano shoudn't have any issues with the offical core.

sweet fjord
#

*she
but yeah, i tried several ROMs, main one the JP version

glass shale
#

Should be a win

lapis topaz
#

No issues here. Using the latest stable.

glass shale
faint onyx
#

The US version is a Sega channel release iirc.

sweet fjord
#

this has happened across three sessions (power off / reboot)
will nuke settings if wip core doesn't change

#

here's a little hdmi recording of the first attract demo
you can see the gfx glitches and the slow game speed

faint onyx
#

I don't get slowdowns. But when you progess a bit more you get some tearing and slightly garbled graphics around the sprites. As seen in your short clip.

#

Especially when the knights are on the screen.

sweet fjord
#

yeah, the recent WIP core is the same
guess i can try killing settings

#

actually. weirdly.
i just reset the game to take a quick vidcap of the first level opening stuff and gamespeed is normal! (this is still the WIP core)

#

ok, i have a theory

#

every time i open this ROM the screen is rolling (CRT) because it's set for EU region for some reason
i blind-menu it back to JP or US without resetting the game
in this scenario the game runs poorly like in the video above
but i think that after resetting the core (with JP or US region already set) the game runs as it should

#

is on-the-fly region switching a no-no?

#

this is 100% reproducible on my side

warm carbon
#

I think it can cause issues. I usually reset after a region change. If you always want the core in JP, you can select it, then page over to the second page, and select save settings. that will make it load in JP every time

#

I actually think you can set a preference order. So I think you can do US >JP> EU

sweet fjord
#

trust me, i did that several times. the EU keeps coming back.
US > EU > JP is what i had it at

faint onyx
#

Maybe the game is a bit buggy after all.

warm carbon
#

yeah very weird

sweet fjord
faint onyx
#

Graphic garbage in certain moments of the game.

sweet fjord
#

yeah i wonder if that is on real hw

warm carbon
#

Does it happen on the genesis core?

sweet fjord
#

i went to test it last night and found i no longer have it. didn't seek it out yet.

warm carbon
#

you need to enable the alt cores repo in update all

#

it will be in the other folder

sweet fjord
#

yeah, i think i have that enabled, so i expected to find it here. i'll try again

glass shale
sweet fjord
#

yeah i have Alt Cores enabled. no Genny in there atm

#

i can look online

warm carbon
#

it's mega drive +

#

names.txt I think

sweet fjord
#

oh. lol, played myself.

warm carbon
#

I think anyway

#

but that date looks right

sweet fjord
#

curiously... opened the MD + (Gen?) core. no ROM history. region set to US. open the JP Golden Axe III rom and it goes PAL again.

#

why does this game signal for PAL...

#

slo-mo gameplay just as before after region EU -> JP without core reset afterward.

#

(we should note we're not 100% certain this is the old Gen core)

faint onyx
#

The graphics glitches aren't there in the Genesis/Mega Drive + core, so it's indeed a bug in the Mega Drive core.

warm carbon
#

I'm pretty sure it is - the date is right

sweet fjord
#

you're right; i see the CPU Turbo option from Gen

#

does this core not have Y/C support? B&W. (edit: nm, wrong mister config file was active)

#

seconding no gfx glitches on Gen core

faint onyx
sweet fjord
#

ah, i see.

#

for purposes of a github bug report should i be running last released build or the WIP?

warm carbon
#

ya

sweet fjord
faint onyx
#

I got it with the WIP for sure. But i really don't know if it's related to the region switching. This sounds a bit odd.

sweet fjord
#

did you reset the core after setting region properly, and still see artifacts?

#

i don't seem to

faint onyx
#

OK. I set the priority order for the Mega drive WIP core also to JP>US>EU, saved and reloaded it (so, no region switch at all). Then i played it a few minutes, no graphic glitches. Somebody should verify this behavior on a real Mega Drive, i'm too lazy at the moment.

glass current
#

question: I did a quick search but didnt see anything does the sega core support sega laser disc games

faint onyx
#

No

glass current
#

can it be made to play them

stone plinth
#

All the LaserActive stuff sounds like it's going to be a huge project to tackle

stone plinth
#

The laseractive format appears to be really complex and it isn't as easy as just putting an MP4 on an SD card

#

That's what I can remember from a recent discussion anyway

warm carbon

yeah, laserdisc shit is wild

#

and those images are like 30gb or something silly
