#Arcades - Fighting Cores

I would like to know their data collection policies and how their databases are stored.
Are they officially registered to carry out this data collection, and is obsolete data properly deleted from their systems at the end of the service rental period ?
This is a rental period that is automatically renewed every 2nd of the month, if I understand well.
Patreon is officially registered for doing data collection and their policies are clear on what they do with it, but they use a system external to Patreon for this DRM, so they must also be registered and declared for doing it (at least legally).
Furthermore, are they GDPR compliant? If not, they are not authorized to do business with individuals from Europe.
That's me knackered in the UK if correct! 🙂
Yeah no thanks, closed source is antithetical to the MiSTer project that they owe their existence to. Aka they can suck it
The data collection is my biggest beef with it
I have nothing against them, but I know people who are much more meticulous about this kind of thing.
And it could happen, quite quickly. That would be a shame...
The same kind of people who already went after atrac17 a few years ago, with his issues with his Redump ISO repositories, where he was using the collective's logos without their permission, as well as distributing the files directly.
That didn't end well.
the whole thing stinks
they're awful people doing awful things
they upset virtually everyone who comes in contact with them
Do they release their cores to the general public like JT does after a while? I wouldn't mind waiting if they do. I am not fond of adding drm to my mister.
We don't know what things are going to look like going forward. Their post is likely just poorly worded, but it says that "Not all core releases will require a Patron membership, but the majority going forward will". I dunno if that means that new releases, or all releases
time will have to tell
I joined their Patreon last night hoping to get the Midway releases, only to find out that $5 only gets you MK1 and requires you to jump through DRM hoops. I will not be renewing at the end of the month.
how does DRM on the mister work? you need to be always online?
Maybe I'm nuts but to me the way they're handling this goes against everything the Mister project is about so they won't be getting any money from me
wait, coin-op added DRM to their mortal kombat cores?
lmao fuck that, i hope they get leaked and cracked
no, they don't
I find amazing how these coin-op collection guys manage to annoy everyone they come in contact. Last few months I was starting to consider joining their patreon, as they seemed like were redeeming themselves after MARS fiasco and etc, but no, atrac17 always manage to find ways to be a jerk, always proving that people never change
I'll contribute to srg320 and others that provide meaningful progress for the MiSTer and preservation community, amazing guys out there that are really talented
Yeah $5 a month for a game rental seems a bit much. I would support that if it meant it will benefit the entire community when the core goes public, but if their business model is to keep some cores as paid subscription I don't think that is sustainable long term. Hope they come around as I think they would get much more support that way.
When I heard JT was planning to do MK1/MK2 next after CPS3 I thought it was unnecessary as COC was releasing their core. The DRM, paid subscription and closed source puts things in a new perspective.
Yeah, closed source subscription? That is not what MiSTer is about. I'd rather play the MK Legacy Kollection than pay them a monthly subscription fee.
yeah for sure. F those clowns
Thankfully the Legacy Kollection is actually pretty good now on PC.
Just avoid it on PS5 and Switch.
Holy shit
Holy shit
Damn, I didn't know this, or I would have mentioned it in my video.
So $5 is MK
$10 is with Narc and Smash?
Just need somebody else to step up and make cores for these instead
Money poisons every well it touches. Jotego's method is coherent, you reward the development, then eventually everyone gets to enjoy the fruits. Not all controversy is 'good for business'
Next they'll require a blood sample and cheek swab to play their cores.
Holy shit
Holy Shit!
Gotta make up for the lost MARS revenue somehow.
A friend of mine who I tried to talk out of giving atrac his money did so anyways. It's a QR code you have to scan with your phone to verify your Patreon is current with them
Can’t believe all you cheapo can afford $8 bubble teas multiple times a week while complain about $5 for a game. /s
i can't give up my avacado toast
Maybe it references things in the way that Claude also references things 🤔
They don't have an option to disable vsync so it still tries to run at 60Hz with jerkiness :/
Also, how is this considered preservation when the core expires every month? Their patreon goes offline, so does the access/preservation 🙄
Just saw the amount of data they pull from your Patreon account to get access to the alpha/beta cores. I'm surprised people are okay with that. We'll see how long they keep these cores behind their paywall. I'm guessing they'll try to milk it as long as they can.
I bought a rpi 5 with power adapter and mini hdmi adapter for $65 and it plays those games fine without putting weird shit on my MiSTer.
Oh but wait, replayOS is closed source. Fml. Oh well. I put it on my guest wifi with the other weird stuff.
What data are they pulling?
Needs more Joseph Joestar!
Holy shit
I'll quote Robby on this. "Holy shit"
Is that something they have to request? or is that just what the API exposes by default?
The amount of access can be controlled through the integration. They've chosen to pull that data.
ooooooof
That's some fucking "you need to disclose your social network history before entering the country shit"
ugh. Sorry, I meant this is a really big Holy Shit!
HOLY SHIT!
MAJOR SPOILERS
You have been warned.
Anime is Jojo's Bizarre adventure:stardust crusaders.
Yare yare daze compilation is done too, probably going to upload it soon.
Am I right in saying that a Midway core isn't as big a deal as the CPS core was, in that CPS had been poorly emulated for years while Midway has been emulated with fairly high accuracy? I'm definitely looking forward to having access to the Midway games on MiSTer, but I don't remember noticing significant differences between my MK PCB and MAME. SF2 on MiSTer was a revelation and I honestly haven't used my SF2 PCB since.
Btw is it just the beta that’s closed source + DRM’d? Or it’s forever?
Does CoC release the source to their cores? I thought they only release the binaries. They've been making a big deal about some special framework they had to build to make Midway possible. I doubt they have any plans to make that available any time soon.
They told NFG that they normally release cores to the public domain after the beta period
So it sounds like it will be like jotego in that regard
Not stirring the pot, just taking a firm position here..hopefully as many devs and supporters can push back on this dangerous precedent re the data collection, and temporary access, with something like Gamepass, the consumer knows off the bat they dont own any of the IP's and neither do any of the FPGA core creators. It creates a mercenary philosophy where the patron is not only paying one Corporate entity but two. It is too divisive, bad dialectics leave no winners in the long term.
but hang on now, if it's really like jotego's then (i.e, all open sourced after beta, public accessible binaries)...whats the issue?
(other than that dude being a complete jerk ass to everyone and dev out there)
They haven’t released any core source in a year
I think the issue is they haven't done any of that yet for any of their Patreon only cores, plus the DRM and data collection.
People are always what they do, not what they say. As Paul Weller from the Jam wrote "The public get's what the public wants" The Patreon data consolidation issue is serious..we cannot allow ourselves to become Barcodes.
what data does e.g., jotego's patreon collect, if anything?
instead we shall become QR codes
Nothing
you mean they're forever-paywalling few of their cores?
Holy shit
Until we see at least one of their Patreon cores become public / open source, we cannot be sure what their plan is. They used to do it though, meaning open source their cores. But that was back when they started on mister.
Look at the the consequences of not being able to pay for Cash at all times. I think It was Nelson Rockefella who said something like *Paraphrasing 'There's a $20 dollar bill down the back of many a Sofa's and I want them.' I have no problem Patronising tech work, but locking them behind suspiciously long BETA status's could become 'plausible deniability' if this particular model becomes normative.
did coin-op ever follow up on their fixes for zero wing/tatsujin-ou and such or were those left in the dust too
I think they got updated? It’s hard to tell what’s been updated and what hasn’t because they distributed builds in their discord too
Someone should just grab the code that is open for those cores and update them
'A person's reputation often precedes them' I hope *sigh that team Coin-op reconsider this explicit model, and just go the Jotego route..I guess that's all I got to say, time will tell yadda yadda.
I swear Tizoc in City of the Wolves says "holy shit!" for one of his special moves. Not literallly, but it sure sounds like it whenever I hear it!
Where did you get one that cheap? Here in AU the cheapest is about $100AU and that's from aliexpress
they have 1gb model now. I got the rpi 5 from adafruit
and the power adapter and hdmi adapter from amazon
with a case and all...might just as well by a used business PC from ebay and miles more powerful.
pi does 240p
and the newest version of windows 10 I have doesn't understand even know how to do 480p
it's just 1080p scaled to look like 480p
i think win10 used to know in the past, but it's a rolling release so they break things
that's true. although pi's composite output while respectable, it's 720x480
And that'll do the Midway stuff alright and output at the proper framerate?
so Pi's 240p isn't gonna get pixel perfect...thus I switched to MiSTer
tbh, I don't play the midway stuff enough to know how good it is
i've been using it more for other arcade cores
replayos sends the 240p out through the hdmi cable
oh ok so you aren't using composite out then
only replayOS can? can batocera do that?
no idea
replayos has a mister like interface, which is good
and batocera uses retroarch? which is bad
so I haven't used batocera in 5+ years
Replayos is from the rgbpi team, so they care about 240p, but I'm not sure about batocera.
i prefer mister cores for almost everything, but in the last few weeks i have found replayos to be a simple option for non-mister stuff
RetroArch and LibRetro are the same team
But the ui is bad
Batocera doesn't use the RetroArch UI. It uses Emulation Station
Depends what you want to do. You can manage nearly all configuration directly through Emulation Station
This is still a lot of layers of complexity
If you're playing mame, how many menus are there for mapping inputs, that are all independent of one another?
With separate config files
1 in emulation station. 2 in retro arch. 1 in mame.
I count 4-that's insane
Are you saying that you make custom mappings for each game?
You map once in EmuStation and only need to map in the emulators for custom mappings. Batocera automatically maps to each emulator.
How do you do it for mame
Just map in Emulation Station. That's all. You don't have to touch the configs in the emulators.
Okay if that's the case then they fixed it
It's been like that for the entire time I've used it, which is more than 10 years now.
Actually, it might be nearly exactly 10 years
Nope, 9 years.
I still think it's too many layers. If You’re supposed to use emulation station for everything, is that menu accessible while you're playing a game in the core?
No. You'd access the emulator's menu if needed when playing a game.
Insane
It's a front end for more than just libretro cores. Not quite sure what you're expecting. If all you want is libretro, then maybe it's not for you.
Yes i think that is a bad interface and it is not for me
I think replayos is a better frontend
ReplayOS is much more limited in the systems it supports. As I said, if you only care about those systems then that's great. It's a completely different beast than Batocera.
Man after seeing that info CoC demands of you, I dunno how to say it nicely, but CoC can get fucked
Let em know 😂
It's a shame, as that team is bringing some great cores, but their attitude in the community is atrocious.
yes, given how they behave online, why would you ever want to give your info to them lol
They have a history of being insanely vindictive and aggressive, so yeah, the less of my personal info they have, the better. Never trust unhinged people with your personal information!
I hate that I subbed to their Patreon last year, before I knew who was actually behind that team. Subbed for a year, but have since cancelled. Definitely not renewing when it expires.
Hey you can't fault yourself for things you didn't know about, when you realized they're scumbags, you made the right decision. That's all ya can do
Zaparoo is now working with ReplayOS 🙂
Aye, you've got to be Patreon plus, like I was, until I cancelled last night, sod them.
Too much information to be honest
A bit yes, and as I said a faff on as well to get it to work. I know you lot like fighting games, but I wasn't bothered either way, I liked them for their other releases.
(Sorry that's a huge wall of seemingly bad news and too many words are jumping around for me tonight)
but, does this affect MiSTer in any way?
What you don’t want to rent MK month to month where they can cut you off at any moment because of some made up petty bullshit? But it’s such a sweet deal. Also it’s always a good idea to send personal info to people who have tried to get revenge by contacting employers, spouses and filing spurious lawsuits
I’m looking forward to future terms where you have to join their discord and tell atrac and pram0d they are ‘very stable geniuses’ once a week or get banned
We have a choice and that's what matters. Vote with your wallets. I was set on joining their Patreon for MK2 even being closed source, but drm and being a rental was info I didn't had before. Hope they come around.
Could be worse, like managing to have the coin input bound to an online payment service
Taito and Sega figured that out years ago 😃
nesicaXmister
Can’t wait
I like the idea of cores needing to call out to a service. I think it’s too bad only modern games can become unplayable when companies shut down backends needed for them to run
This is a good direction
I just got a Mister a few days ago, are these CoC twats the only ones pulling BS like this?
Yes. Vast majority are, completely free with Patreons if you choose to support, but with no benefit over non supporters.
Jotego is the exception, he allowsv access to beta cores if you subscribe, but if you don't subscribe you will still get the core anyway when it's complete. And all his cores are open source.
I believe the only closed source cores are literally the CoC ones.
PS. FWIW I don't think their paid members count has increased at least over the last 18 hours or so and stands at 765. If it was popular, I think it'd have gone to significantly.
Good deal, thank ya.
I'm not an IP lawyer at all, and this should be double-checked, but it's the bare minimum.
We can't find any legal information on their Patreon page, nor on the external CoC license page.
Their clause in the CoC License Manager has no legal value and cannot be invoked in an agreement binding on the customer.
As per example, no entity or legal person is declared as registered with the U.S. Department of Commerce, and no declaration regarding personal data protection obligations is made in the United States or the European Economic Area is viewable on their pages.
Furthermore, no Data Protection Officer (DPO) is registered or clearly mentioned, no external data controller is designated, and we have no access to the collected data, even upon simple request (for example, to find out why and how it is used internally).
No legal guarantees regarding the collected data are clearly mentioned on their pages.
Therefore, their data collection appears to be completely illegal under several US federal laws, and they also cannot conduct business in the European Economic Area.
What surprises me most is that their team includes someone specializing in big data processing and engineering.
These kinds of legal details are taught as a basic principle in specialized university courses, particularly the types of declarations required before launching any kind of data collection.
EDIT : Typo & clarification about declaration policies.
This sucks.
Enshittification coming for mister.
Games-as-service Switch Online model, no thanks.
They'll be released publicly eventually at least. This is for beta/alpha access
Unsure what was wrong with the seemingly massively successful jotego model of beta access.
I'm completely unfamiliar with this kind of thing, and not trying to be antagonizing towards them, but who would be the entity that begins the process for punishing that kind of thing? I'd definitely not want to put myself in a position to be staring all of that down.
Have they clarified that? Their own help docs certainly don't make that clear
We shall see then
I don't see why they wouldn't. I
I try to avoid the drama of the MiSTer community. I'm too old to care and just want to game. I appreciate everyone's hard work that goes into this project. People are awesome.
I'd rather go without than dox myself to a bolus of tossers who are already known to engage in intimidation and legal threats. CoC can respectfully go and fuck themselves.
Simply have a question and a request for verification with the United States Department of Commerce firstly, regarding their registration procedure and their policies for protecting sensitive data following collection from a site without a legal page.
If they are in compliance, no further action is taken; otherwise, they may be prosecuted for illegal collection of personal data, and be prohibited from any commercial activity, as well as subject to an administrative fine.
I must admit, I only went for it, without knowing, or understanding what I was giving away. Plus the fact of regenerating personal keys, that validate, as long as they exist. Sod that, cancelled.
It’s not drama to point out that the project everyone enjoys exists because of open source and these guys are not participating in that. Supporting that behavior is your own choice but people should be aware at least anyway
Same with the Data Privacy Network on the European Economic Area, and a question about the GDPR legality of their current business model + copy to Patreon Customer Support.
Are they legally authorized to use the Patreon API for doing a DRM ?
We’d probably still be using retroarch and hitting stones with crude hammers if not for open source! 😉
I'm not specifically talking about this data thing. I haven't really signed on for this data gathering and I probably won't. I don't understand the need for it either.
I'm more talking about a lot of the other stuff I've read is just he said she said schoolyard stuff.
Just a lot of shit talking on all sides. It gets old having to scroll through all of it.
But this is the best place to get information on MiSTer so scroll through it I must.
But yeah, the open source thing I don't understand that either. And I know it's definitely annoying considering preservation etc.
If it is stated by the dev team, that's more reassuring, but won't clear the data collection system legality.
I agree.
I've never had any issues with that team and they've done a lot of good work. But I'm not going to hand over my data. I definitely agree on that.
Same.
I mean, I saw a comment in PixelCherryNinja's video yesterday from someone who joined their Patreon at the $5 tier and just left a comment that they want to help fund development but don't want to jump through registration hoops for MiSTer cores, and that they were more than happy to stay subscribed without getting the core just to fund development. That's all they said, and yet they had their subscription immediately canceled and they were blocked from accessing their Patreon going forward. That's the kind of vindictive bahavior people are giving up their personal info to. Can't even imagine what they plan to do with it.
There was another guy in JTs discord the other day who got cancelled because he asked about the core they said they were releasing that day 😅
Seems to already be the case, I called out their bullshit on X, and instead of trying to explain why they request the info he demands, he blocked me lol
dont worry about the paywall stuff itll all be free on MARS :)
Not really coming to mister as they are just doing this unofficially
im uh curious how their framework would access things like system date and hardware ids
or somehow access the internet which i doubt it's doing
like isn't a core just an rbf file that is burned to the fpga, so its not like they can do anything that's not already currently exposed via linux / main
but maybe it's just a one way hash of the hardware id / valid timestamp and then they just read that and compare using their private key
someone would have to test with an expired key by rolling back the date or something
It is not true that the game stops working after a month; an upgrade is only necessary when, for example, a new version of the core is released.
it;s not a game pass
Holy shit
i mean okay, the faq implies that your key could suddenly stop working
also the fact that you wont have to update your license key if you pay in advance for a year
having something that only changes validity on new closed source core releases is even weirder
like that implies they just invalidate every key
The author's response to the question of whether it is necessary to renew the key every month. He writes:
"Not necessarily. Your key at present will work on the MK indefinitely now. However, if there are updated builds, or other things released later, you'll have to generate a new key. A yearly sub doesn't have to generate keys every month, just once a year"
yeah those are conflicting statements lol
They're really, really bad at communication.
and some more info about whole situation https://x.com/hyp36rmax/status/2045930452641579420?s=20
Looks like a lot of misinformation is rampant within #misterfpga community around #CoinOpCollection recent Midway beta. #arcade
Let's talk facts...
Yes, Accessing Midway beta requires authorizing Patreon to share information.
The following information is shared:
-Patreon
the word "misinformation" is strong here, even though there's not a consistent message outside of a discord lol
I'm just a player; I'm not interested in any conflicts, and I never have been. Everyone can vote with their wallet.
also why is this person stating "facts" if they're not a representative authorized to clarify statements
but maybe they're on the team
lol
which is not clearly disclosed
I didn't read it closely, but I think the authors gave their consent for publication
Unfortunately, I don't have time to keep up with all of this
This should all really be spelled out clearly from the getgo on their own sources of information, which is both patreon and their own website. Not through twitter after the fact.
It’s locked down because they don’t want people to file bug reports for outdated versions?
this was the same issues we had with mars
Confusing post
also i appreciate the desire to be a neutral party and not be interested in conflicts and only want to play games, but those kinds of posts never really contribute any benefit to the discussion or debate lol
I think an important point is what Zet mentioned, are they even legally eligble to collect data?
sure why not
works for me 😎
also hyp36's rebuttal was that the patreon admins could already see this information
I worked with a ton of GDPR practices and policies, and you do not want to play
oh in terms of that stuff
lol
thats' more on how they're storing it and what they do with it
and if they have a way to delete it
but you could hand wave it as a "requirement for doing business" a lot of the time
we dont even know if they're storing the info that pateron is sharing
you're also giving consent to share it
but yeah so like whats UNCLEAR is if they can retroactivitely revoke beta access to cores you have access to
or if somehow a beta core you have downloaded will suddenly stop working given no other outside circumstances
like JT cores are the same
I think thats because of Update all in my case
because it always fetches the latest core
but like if you have a jotego build from 2024 and the 2024 key, it should work
even if you've stopped paying etc
the fact that there's even room for interpretation here is a failure on their part
if thats possible, I wonder why these guys are going the extra mile to lock people out lol
the other thing that's not clear is like, okay MK is a $5 tier core
but like the other two cores??? wouldn't they use the same key as MK
lol
that upsell is so scummy lmao
either way, all this friction is funny for some ROI
more drama, more complaints, probably a drop in patreon subscribers
but offset by some new subs
Are there any vids of the beta in action?
If they just said nothing and kept doing what they're doing, they would be in a signficantly better position
well they had a ton of good will built up from teasing mortal kombat finally on mister
and their new framework
lol
mostly speaking for myself
I 100% believe that MK and Midway was such a sunken cost, it became their carrot to dangle
like how many years was that in development? 2-3?
like am i going to subscribe just for midway cores? no
would i try to pirate said beta cores if they were piratable? no
am i going to circumvent whatever DRM they've put in place? no
like i'd be curious how easy it would be to break
but also it's not worth the effort
yeah, if their system is truly above board, the cost of maintaining it will eat into their profits
#share-media message
Has there been any mention of a potential Primal Rage core in development?
isn't primal rage one of those games that has never been accurately emulated
Yup. It's the only arcade PCB I still use, for that specific reason.
although i guess there was progress there last year
Are you ready to dive into the untold story behind one of the most iconic fighting games of the '90s? PRIMAL RAGE had it all—dinosaurs, beasts, and brutal battles in a post-apocalyptic world. But this arcade classic was never properly emulated for decades... Hidden behind layers of encryption, Primal Rage was hindered for years, leaving fans l...
i mean send your rare pcbs to be decapped by someone reputable lol
Unfortunately, not much came from that emulator.
i never really played the arcade version so
most of my nostalgia for that game was the weird PC port that was half finished
Not sure I'd call Primal Rage rare, but my board is still in great shape
This is the stuff that is weird to me. They gave NFG a similar, out of the side of your mouth answer.
The funny thing about intent is that it can change...Why can't they say "yes, these cores will be available to the general public?" Why are they constantly saying they "intend" them to be?
I guess that Primal Rage has quite a competent port on Saturn
also how many 'in beta' cores do they currently have waiting to hit that point where they are good enough to be public and source released etc
You can do whatever you want with your money but I won't be giving them a penny out of principle.
I guess that the public will see MK1 when MK2 is released to their patrons
Yes, but is that confirmed or is that their intent
That would be a logical step to create an incentive to jump aboard
Did a human write this? like seriously, it sounds like someone is trying to pretend to be human
All I'm saying is, if you plan on releasing them to the public, state that clearly. They have a reputation for saying one thing and doing another - be clear.
If you're gonna pretend to not be a business but then have someone talk like a business person, nothing is making sense
Lawyers are just rubbing their hands with this
I'm just glad Hypermax found something to do with his time
Agreed. How odd. Marketing PR bot 0.8 engage
UMK3 >>>>> UMK2 > UMK1
Got a long way to go lol
Stop snubbing MK Trilogy omg
I will not
as long as you intend to release source it's compliant!
All these MK joysticks I’ve been hoarding are going to be worth a goldmine
does the MK beta still require mame files?
UMK3 + is as close as it gets to Trilogy
That's what I'm waiting for on Mister. Shame it's taken half a decade to even get to this point.
I lucked out and got a cab super cheap like 4-5 years ago
And then another…that wound up not just having UMK3, but also MK1 and 2 as a bonus surprise hiding inside
I see rains roundhouse combo is there. Is it infinite?
It stops launching them through the wall at 10 hits
It sounds vague, but it is better than a hard No as an answer.
Nice!
totally. I just wish they would be clear
I was so confused/excited when I pulled the pcb tray out
They’ve said they’d release source for some cores when out of beta for 2yrs now. Imagine the pile of corpses for anyone holding their breath
Do you have to physically switch them out or is there a toggle somewhere?
Manually swap, no switcher
There’s nothing hooked to that jamma edge so def manual 😉
The monitor in that cab was on its super last legs and has been yanked. I need to pull the frame and chassis and toss the tube
Kajoq getting all those bonus boards reminds me of that meme with the gamecube with cash in it or whatever it was
Got another I’m going to put in vertical for shmups
Yeah, my Russian nesting Kombat
Classic
It's not even about the money, I don't trust someone that seems to want so much of your personal and account info to access their cores, as well as the overbearing number of steps that hardware-lock the key to your specific mister that they require. Last device I recall that did that was the PSIO and that information was definitely abused...
I intended to go to bed early last night
I intended not to make videos about these cores
Thank you for sharing this information.
Some points explained by hyp36rmax should have been clearly stated in their previous communications.
The mechanism is explained a little better now, and some points have been addressed that should have been addressed from the outset, not afterward.
I have no further comment.
Doesn't really clear anything up and instead sounds like a PR piece to try and get people to calm down about legitimate problems with how they do things and what they are planning to do being an escalation.
The CoC Krew could just... open source and keep making cores and not even have a beta key and still have hundreds of people paying them monthly.
I know, radical thought, it's crazy, I know.
It's only been done with every single patreon developer except for Jotego, and Jotego opens up his source when he's distributing binaries.
They can take their "clarification", wrap it in barb wire and shove it. Anyone willing to install whatever malware CoC are bundling with their beta cores deserves everything they get.
And before anyone comments, if it's DRM, it's malware.
Well it's probably not malware. Shouldn't say that without any evidence.
It could be, sure, but I don't see a reason to believe that.
I regard all DRM as malware without exception, especially in the homebrew space.
Combined with the self-dox requirement, it's hard not to be suspicious.
Yeah, don't blame ya.
It'll "conveniently" be in "beta" forever
I don't want a single core from CoC on my Mister. I'd rather take a spool of razor wire, put it on my mouth, pull the other end out of my ass n floss myself to death.
I'm 80% sure that they will have pay walled, "complete" cores in the near future, if your sub count is going down, you can only squeeze from your current patrons
seems like a good business decision to harvest your customers PII and lock down with more restrictions and hoops to jump through if you want to keep your patron count going up
which is insanely ironic, given that the main reason this hobby attracts people is because the users reject that sort of system
honestly, i was really hoping my retro gaming hobby could add some DRM and login servers with a "you will own nothing" method
it's what we were missing
maybe we could get someone to add in some anti-cheat software too that flags normal software as hacks
Why not just go full Team Xecuter and remotely brick the entire system?
Remember, they *intended *to release MARS 🤣
Wonder if someone can write a core that’s rm -fr /
the fpga cores don't run commands on linux that way
thankfully
someone could push a malicious alternate Main binary though
which is always a potential problem, so just use the official ones and you are not going to run into that problem
I intend to dunk a basketball
Holy shit
Rather than address the situation, they just tell people to unsubscribe.
fine by me
Oh good lord. Now they blocked me. 😂
I better be getting a refund for the remainder of the year long membership
Ha!
Yup. Just got the refund e-mail. Guess I'll give that money to someone else in the community who isn't a total dick.
So I'm now blocked by atrac17 on Twitter and Patreon. Where else can I have him block me? This might be a fun game.
depends on how many social media accounts you linked and they collected data on. I'm also surprised they're blocking you and not harassing and threatening you. Maybe they've grown up just a little bit.... or maybe that all comes later.
Discord was the only thing I had linked to Patreon. He's more than welcome to block me here.
Not even sure what server members of that team use, if any
I dont understand why they act so thin skinned, we are here to support their work. M.A.R.R.S project got sh1t canned, yeh it happens. Come on teamCoinop this doesn't have to be this awkward.
Is it because you asked what the "K3" in "K3 Framework" stood for?
After he posted the response above, I replied with the exact text from the Patreon integration that's used with the new DRM. If they weren't collecting the data, you'd expect a further response explaining the amount of data they're getting access to. Instead ... blocked.
I think you meant MARS. M.A.R.R.S. is/was actually good ;P https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9gOQgfPW4Y

These assholes shouldn't be allowed to have any of their content as a part of update all
They wouldn't care. They'd even likely wear it as a badge of honour.
I was wondering if the key it generates is locked for a month what would happen if you download the key and then just never connect to the internet again and alway reset the time on the mister so it doesn't go over the end time set?
Violation of ToS and you'd be blocked somewhere different like an excel file
Hopefully enough people see thru their BS and stop supporting them.
Holy shit
I care about the src code not the binaries. There's not much preservation going on here. They have had a github for 3 or 4 years and the only code is 2 modules they added a few weeks ago. There isn't any whole projects for any cores they have did for mister or pocket, they seem to just use it for distribution. They could play nice and share but they haven't been and I doubt that's going to change in the future.
I partly blame jt for doing the betas that led to this patreon extortion that's happening now.
At least the source code is available for JT cores that are in beta.
Yes I have to give him credit for that. And I really blame patreon's tier system where it incentivizes making perks to get people to pledge more. But I just mentioned him because now they can say "well he does it".
not all but most of them
this has got to be one of the messiest, just straight up WTF things in the MiSTer scene
You'd put that over that sega stuff?
Don't you ever bad mouth Uncle Alejandro like that
Perdóname, tío Alejandro
SuperSega wasn't MiSTer!
I 100% forgot it wasn't 😆
I wasn't paying that close of attention to it
You just admitted that you don't watch all of @lucid mesa 's videos. Fake fan!
we all knew it!
I don't like his accent and the hasty speaking rhythm. 😅
just hope youtube does AI english dubs lol
Ok so now that we got all the complaints out of our system let’s please keep criticisms civil and constructive. Thank you.
Holy Shit
Where's monsieur fpga
Holy Shit
There’s many fighting games and only one me. Kinda trippy. I only have so many hands and brain cells yknow. But I’ll give it a try. Even the bad ones.
I much prefer Lance Charlson to VGE. Tell him I bid him good tidings, and that I deduce from his name alone he is a man of sparkling wit and stand up character!
Lance is off this month
he is a real person technically who is not me
If people aren't happy about what they are doing, the best way to send a message is not give them money. Even if you really want to play Mortal Kombat or whatever, just take a stand and don't back them. If enough people do that they will get the message. If you are giving them money then you are condoning and supporting and encouraging their bad behaviour and actions that are against the ethos of the MiSTer project.
hence my ignoring it
and let me tell you...nobody asks me about it
Yeah, if you are a news person then just don't even cover them.
Not that you need me to tell you that, just look at what happened to PCN when he reported things they didn't like.
Its not worth my time. If I wanted to have a fight I'd say some dumb shit to my wife when she comes home 🤣
I mean you're going to do that anyways
obv
Pixel Ninja is the drama guy anyway. I'm sure he'll cover it.
I do respect your dedication to mister motion though. Hopefully you get a nice side hustle out of it.
he's being paid off by Big Decomp now
I make more than some people think and less than others think
I paid our mortgage last month
What's a Chicago mortgage these days
without being too specific about my exact finances somewhere with HOA between 2-3K
Yoiks.
I try and be open with people because they find it interesting but some people (obv not here) think they have some right to demand my finances to the penny 🤣
thats tax and insurance rolled into escrow too
One of my regional offices is in the area just curious if I ever wanted to escape Cleveland.
Toronto is also an option but even worse
I'll never complain bout my $600 dollar mortgage for my 2,000 sq foot home ever again 😂
You could make your mortgage in an afternoon sucking dick at that price!
(I teed the joke up. This is where you right “and VGE would know”)
And that’s AFTER 100K down
i'm quite jealous right now
my mortgage is large and my home is not large 😭
haha in my club
I won't mention 2 acres of land either 😂 I live in the middle of nowhere and I love it
Hideki Kamiya?
And people were EXCITED for Mars until they started attacking people and the mister project
And X-Men. The Limited Run/Konami version didn’t even attempt to fix the existing sound bugs.
(or they tried and failed. same outcome, hard to tell because they wouldn’t answer questions about it.)
JT is trying, but right now the balance of that core has swung in the opposite direction while he tries to figure out the sound mixing logic
Mortgage talk in the fighting cores thread! What rates does everyone have
In the new Tekken game all the characters are entering the tournament to try win money to pay off their mortgages.
they fight to be the king of the iron mortgage
You’d think they’d be a bit more careful with the stage barriers
3.75%
So now that we have 3rd strike decomp on arm, how much longer til a fightcade + groovymister "core"
boy I've got news for you
the creator hadn't really tested it since he made it with using it with an arcade cab in mind, and he hasn't gotten said arcade cab so lol
i doubt the experience would be that great if it was
Taki showed 3rd strike running on retroarch at 60fps on arm a year ago
yeah but adding fightcade on top of that is not nothing
though honestly idk how capable the arm on MiSTer actually is
I never did try this
my groovy setup needs to be completely re-setup in the new house now that all the equipment has been changed out and Ive just been lazy
the 3sx guys are working on netcode. once that's up and running it should theoretically be possible for it to also work on the arm port
Is there a benefit from the arm port vs running an emu engine like FBneo?
Like I'm curious what Taki even used for his POC
Also he didn't hook it into groovy, just the frame buffer afaik
taki was using retroarch fbneo iirc
Also is the game the decomp is based on arcade accurate?
the big plus for the decomp port is that it's running natively with the source code available. so things can be optimized and improved
not yet but the 3sx team is working on it
but there have already been improvements made to the decomp port over the base ps2 version. game speed was changed to match the arcade speed. there's new training mode features. controllers are handled by sdl so it's really plug and play. amongst other things
Is ps2 3s 480i only?
the ps2 version is 480i but the decomp port can do native 240p
the PS2 version being stuck at 480i really sucks, especially when the dreamcast port had a beautiful 240p mode
i think there are some codes that will remove the bilinear filter and give the game a proper integer scale, but you still need some external video processor to downscale to 240p proper
just sucks when the dreamcast version had it built right in
Some ps2 games can be set to 240p including the vampire collection so i wondered if it could as well
doing so with 3rd strike causes it to lock up while booting iirc
Yeah, there are a few STGs on PS2 that have 240p modes: DDP DOJ, ESPGaluda, ect.
But most arcade ports got stuck at 480i
it's really unfortunate
Nah I got one more. Robby's biceps are too big that they can punch naughty MiSTer users via TCPIP 🤯
lol
What happens if I use Token-Ring?
then it will be a never ending beating whenever he comes around
Sounds like something out of The Three Stooges, a hand on a wheel or something like that slapping people
this is broken though. it causes scores not the be recorded 🙁
i wonder why that became the case for home versions of 240p arcade games /retro game collections in that generation
i heard a while back that the PS2 SDKs incentivized/made it easier to have everything to display at 480i
Hey, which arcade sticks would you recommend?
I like my 8BitDo Bluetooh arcade stick, I have no complaints
works great on Mister and PC
what are you looking for? japanese, american, 6-button, 8-button, etc.
qanba obsidian/pearl is great
the best sticks i've ever used are the older HORI real arcade pro models and the sega virtua stick (especially once modded)
I used to have an 8BitDo bluetooth stick as well, but had to get rid of it because it didn't have enough space for me to rest my left wrist on it. Which was bad for my arthritis.
I don't know anything about arcade sticks I use an old Hori Fighting Mini that's probably about six years old. I'd like to buy something better 🙂
if you want something modern with nice parts for a good price, look into the aforementioned qanba obsidian
AFS (AllFightSticks)
i really like my victrix but it's quite expensive (i got a really good deal on mine)
thanks all!
8bitdo stick + sanwa buttons/lever upgrade, Mayflash F500/700 elite, AFS, Qanba, Victrix
basically in ascending order of cost/flashiness. All mentioned have effectively the same hardware and features its just a matter of how robust and/or fancy the case is
also worth checking facebook marketplace for used TEs/TE2s/Qanbas/Horis
Yeah I have 3 sticks and the mayflash f700 elite is my favorite by far, still stock.
I also have an 8bitdo arcade stick and a hori real arcade pro 4 kai (rap4)
Same. Love my f700 Elite.
Works with pretty much everything. Plus wireless and wired.
I like the size of the rap4 when playing on a table but it is awful in your lap and wired only. 8bitdo is great, but the f700 elite felt more premium.
I did like my 8bitdo, but as I mentioned earlier, it just didn't fit my needs personally.
I have the regular F700 with a JLW clone and iL Super Short buttons.
and I like it quite a bit. The one decent stick from Baolin. LS-32 PCB fits in it perfectly and I put in a stronger spring to go with the American style battop.
8BitDo > F700 Elite
Guangzhou Chicken Run Network Technology Co., Ltd. > 8BitDo
are you brave enough to play street fighter with the gamesir g5??!
it has eight face buttons, more than enough for a good fisticuff i say
lol I can’t troll you

Was just updated today with VRR support. Also crossplay.
I saw that, just tried my main test which is the scrolling faces either side in MK1 and they were flawless!
Do I need to be a paid member of their Patreon for that?
I believe so lol
MKII is not yet available to anyone
You will need to be a paid member when the core releases. It’s unknown how long their Midway games will remain behind a paywall.
I'm curious if they would give some percentage of how beta the cores still are
There isn't any definitive information about anything
Submit your blood sample now to get into the queue
Asking that question would likely result in them blocking you
Lol
Likely forever because this is their golden goose.
I guess not too long. MK1 is the ideal teaser game for MK 2. And MK2 would be the ideal teaser for UMK3 if that turns out to be feasible
I hope so
Just sad to think how few games there was on CPS3, espeially if you don't count just updated versions of the same game, but I can see why SF3 alone would make many far far pefer that core over NGPC
3rd Strike seems to be the holy grail of fighting games on MiSTer. I'd love to see CvS2 and some of the Atomiswave stuff, but that's not looking possible. Still, can't argue with getting the SF3s and Martial Masters.
Yeah def no Naomi/Dreamcast based stuff like those. Maybe the Misterer2000
I think its amazing we even have a good CPS 1 and 2. Didnt some CPS 2 games also have a suicide battery in a way?
I'm one of the people that would vastly prefer NGPC over CPS3, but I do love Third Strike, so it's hard to complain.
I think all of them
why not both meme
i'm curious to see if the competitive 3s community would be willing to adopt misters as the standard or not
so we missed the target date by 26 years already
I think it's very likely the CPS3 core could be standard if the community could break down what's needed
The CPS2 cores are already used at EVO
fucking hype
they would, once it's confirmed to be "arcade perfect"
super turbo on MiSTer was already used at major events.
the owner of my local arcade isn't that interested, but he has like 12 CPS3's, he has a lot of backup spares lol
but for organizing events, i could see it helping
Isn't it like a pain in the ass to flash CPS3s on boot?
also, the community practices on fightcade, which is not "perfect", so something better than thaat for practicing would be good
Not some, all, it was a secutiry measure. Well, the batteries dying wasn't a security measure, the security was that the games were encrypted and the key was stored on voltable sram kept alive by a battery that would wipe if it was tampered with. Problem is of course that batteries don't last forever, though they tended to last a decade or two. The roms are untouched though, it's just their decryption key that gets wiped, not any of the actual rom data.
CPS3 had something like that too IIRC, except now it was a whole cart-shaped dongle you had to plug in along with the game disk, and I think they were even more sensative.
I think my local arcade “had” a CPS-3 of 3rd Strike, but in the past 3 weeks the display (it’s an LCD monitor) is suddenly using some sort of line doubled/filtered resolution to smooth out some of the pixelation.
Which makes me suspect it’s been replaced by an emulator in the cab, or maybe has been one for a while now.
They might be using one of those cheap upscalers designed to convert cabinets from CRT to LCD
I’m just happy we have CPS-2. There are so many good games on there that 3 is just a bonus.
I actually have one of them as part of a project with some additional components to build a fairly decent upscaler for cheap
GBS-2000
yeah, just about as likely
Super Gem fighter is such a sick CPS2 game
that and twinkle star sprites are probably my favorite fighting games
That could be. The only weird part is that it’s been on an LCD for at least 2-3 years and it just now added that change, but maybe they upgraded.
A while back I heard the manager tell a couple of clients that he was giving a tour to that at least one of the other cabs (TMNT) is actually an emulator inside.
yeah, for some rarer stuff the guy near me uses emulators. pretty soldier sailor moon for instance, very pricey and hard to get is what he said
there's one on ebay for only $6250
Specifically this one:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078ZDTLBJ
It's very common, and apparently as-is rather crappy... but with a cheap clock-gen and audino it can rival the OSSC
I also have a soft spot for most of the CPS-2 titles because I spent so much time playing the PS1 ports when I wasn’t at the arcade.
GBS Control an alternative firmware for Tvia Trueview5725 based upscalers / video converter boards. Read the documentation Features: very low lag s...
It used to just be a DIY project but it became populoar enough now that it's being sold as pre-made by many... which kinda defeats the purpose of it being a cheap way to make an upscler though
There’s a lot of audio modules like that too. I’m the key demographic because I suck at soldering.
Heh, I am teaching myself to solder just for projects like this
have all the parts for two and most of the parts for a third project once I get a bit better
Too many replies, I'm at the gym 😭
Is it really? Aren’t the turbo games still have speed issues cps1/2 alike?
i know the vsav scene is all in on misters
Hyper SF2 has some timing differences on mister last I read
I’m orders of magnitude away from noticing that type of stuff in 99.999% of games
vsav doesn't do turbo the same way hyper fighting and super turbo do
Weren’t the speed issues in hyper and dash fixed recently? I seem to remember hearing that
Like within the last 6 months
hf and st use dma interupt timing during clock cycle to frame skip. the core had extra cycles, which allowed for more dma interupst and thus a faster frame skip/turbo
it's closer, but it's not there yet
it was something like 8-12% faster previously. now its closer to 3% faster
jotego said after cps3, he was going to move something with the core to bram to prevent it from having extra clock cycles
I see
I thought had reduced it to like a fraction of a percent?
@fallow ginkgo knows more about it than I do. I just know it's still not correct
I know more than everyone here and it’s probably correct, maybe, I don’t know
I think once CPS3 is truly finished and proven it’ll become a popular tourney option. There’s already so many issues keeping cps3 boards and candy cabs up. And it’s getting to the point where nobody trusts cab panels + everyone uses unique customized setups that the versus cities are going to see less and less use
Mister has been tourney standard for NA Vsav for like 4+ years now
ah, the problem is they run too slow now.
that's for hyper fighting. from the last thing I could find on the fix he did in late december. ST is still around 2.5-3% faster than real hardware
One of the issues was the logic for a speed influencing was inverted, but that's fixed now and I think the organizers knew beforehand.
But yeah, it was used at quite a few events.
Yeah iirc ST is still slight faster. Old turbo is now slight slower after the latest fix.
Oh shit even cab panels are becoming untrustworthy for SFA3?
Becoming? I get phantom inputs on candy panels all the time if you hit it hard
There’s so many cabs with mega questionable wiring
Oh wow
I am understanding the importance of getting these competitive games replicated on reliable hardware now
Even arcade cabs back in the 90s were so wrung out and abused half the time the controls didn’t work since operators can’t be assed to fix something quarters are still going into 😉
i was at a barcade in sf a few months ago playing a tekken cab with my coworker. stoked to show off my sick mishima tech on kazuya. the down-left and down-right diagonals were broken 😭
I can't imagine how annoying it would have been to keep repairing the deluxe street fighter cabs
An arcade cabinet designed for you to punch it with force... great idea Capcom
I was at Meow Wolf years ago where they had a working SF2CE cab hidden in there, and a kid was hanging off of the joysticks. Just full body weight.
A lot of these cabs got so much abuse from being in arcades with kids, and drinks after that.
Even the nicer arcades around me have problems with dead zones in the diagonals of fighters. There's a couple where I won't even play P1 side because I know P2 works better.
I don't think I playted many fighting games in arcades since I sucked at them, I mostly played them at home, feels like I do better with a dpad than joystick
Most of the arcade games I remembered were ones with more weird controls
Prop Cycle, light gun games, The Grid, Groove Coaster
I played in the arcade when I could as a kid, usually got my ass kicked, lol
I spend way more time there as an adult now that I know all this stuff won't be around forever. (I do prefer a D-Pad for playing on the couch.)
I still remember the lines for MK and SF2WW.
You'd wait for 10-15 minutes and get annihilated.
Not much arcades left around here
Trying to adapt to broken controls is part of the charm too. Also giving people shit when they try to blame the controls even if it’s real
Properly maintained cabs have no issues. Cps 3 boards don't really have issues as long as they are properly stored and most importantly, Darksoft'd. Besides the on-board ASICs, the majority of components have easily-sourced counterparts.
I'm still for the most accessible solution being the standard as long as it's good enough, though.
I'm out of the FGC loop since reaching the highest ranks in guilty gear strive, but I don't get why so many customized setups. People nowadays have accepted things like Leverless, while to me it makes no sense as it was a 30+ year old standard, motions taking more time on lever added deepness into the games imho, but I guess you gotta live with your times.
Reminds me of some speedrun communities I went back to for games I heavily speerdan and noticed newcomers have, over time, changed the rules and even allowed things like scripts and macros, no thanks.
It’s basically been a constant toe-ing the line since hitbox hit the scene circa 2011
I feel like you can't discuss it anymore without the leverless becoming angry
I gave up
Funny enough, whenever stick players try anything silly it gets shut down, (see: FullSchedule, Crossup, Antagonist Button) but all the leverless arms race and SOCD tricks and 8 million buttons have become the norm

To me the norm was always : when I go to Japan, I must be able to play like at home. No arcade operator or staff in Japan would allow you to plug your controller into a jamma adapter with the cab left open, lol
You say that, but a handful of the bigger JP arcades have USBs on their stream cabs now
For smash bros melee though I was hyped about the hitbox, but because of the complexity and imperfect state of the gamecube controllers.
For traditional games, I never saw the point
I’m just glad I’ve won the war against PPP on Vsav
And I’m dumbfounded the marvel scene is allowing it now
depressing
if you allow leverless, let's just allow 1 button special moves, I'm failing to see the frontier between the two
especially with the shortcuts abuse in modern games
Like, allowing all 3 punches mapped to one button?
Also, Darkstalkers/VSav ❤️
Correct, we do not allow mapping PPP in Vsav tournaments
When Evo gives out leverless controllers as prizes for winning a 30 year old fighting game played on cab
lmao
lmao
want.
I think that's just a home version port of HSB

I really like leverless controllers. Didn't think they'd be for me, but I grabbed the wireless one from 8BitDo and have been really happy with it. I still use a joystick as my primary controller, but I think that's more about preference due to habit more than anything else. If I were coming into this hobby now, I'd likely prefer leverless.
i gotta say
leverless feels alot worse to use on older games just because the input interpreters were much more strict than the games nowadays
I'd agree with that. I only use leverless for newer fighting games.
I dunno, speedrunners are using them now. Wasn’t Mario world record done on a mister with a keyboard
maybe i should've specified i was talking about fighting games lol
On a related note, I always loved how KOF 95 on PS1 had the setting to map all the specials onto the shoulder buttons. It made me really lazy on that game but it was a blast for solo and casual VS play.
Bonus question: where/when/how did you hone your basic FG special technique?
For me it was SF2 SCE on Genesis.
So many hours practicing quarter and half circles and ➡️⬇️↘️ inputs
Street Fighter II World Warrior on SNES. But I did also play it in the arcade before that, but not nearly as much.
Same re the arcade.
leverless boards are for people who think keyboards are too cheap
Leverless controllers are significantly more ergonomic than using a keyboard
I played SF2 at the local arcade by my school, pretty much every day at lunch.
I was kidding, I do have a leverless but I find playing w/ a stick to be more fun; I still suck anyway
Until I get a chance to play a game with a leverless I still have no clue how to feel about them.
I tried going leverless but realized I'm too old to relearn everything. Sticks are part of the nostalgia.
i've transitioned from leverless to stick it's so much more fun
Wait, you went the other way? What do you like better over stick?
What is that disgusting monstrosity?
If the Doof made that, it would have a single button on the back that would blow it up.
beautiful
Gonna swap ST to the bigger screens here in a minute when 3s is finally over
Very cool. One day I should look into what the Colorado scene is.
i went from leverless to stick too, but only for games pre-sf4
leverless just doesn't feel right on games older than sf4, main thing is that it's easy for me to miss diagonals on leverless which ends up with me dropping specials/supers
You can try it out on a keyboard, Just map ASD as LDR with Space as Up
i just find it more fun is all. i'm actually worse at stick still lol
but i enjoy it more
Huh never thought of that.
One day I'll have to mess around with it.
Going leverless would break my hand for health reasons.
leverless is basically a portable keyboard. if you were a kid in the early 2000s playing with emulators you'll feel right at home
PacMame/Nesticle/ZSNES was the last time I used a keyboard for an emulator.
I still do if I'm playing a game on my laptop in bed to test it out and/or playing an RPG that can't run on MiSTer.
That makes sense and is good testing. When emulators came out it took a while to get a Gravis pad, or whatever the hell worked back then.
I keep hearing people say traditional sticks aren't ergonomic but leverless is... lol
I'm 100% sure leverless hurts your hand more than lever
and some flat out admit they tried traditional sticks, couldn't get a feel for it (I call it lack of perseverance), and moved to leverless directly
My five year old hit their first fireball motion in bbtag on stick today
god bless
Oh a stick is absolutely better for your hand. I have rheumatoid arthritis (an auto-immune disease where your immune system attacks your joints the more you use them), and having to move all your fingers constantly with a leverless controller is a killer. I can barely even use a mouse and keyboard anymore for the most casual of web browsing, let alone work (like I used to), and even then I pay for it constantly when I over do it. I can at least use an arcade stick occasionally for a bit and have some fun, but a leverless is a no-go. It still Fs up my right hand using the buttons, but at least I save my left hand to get by.
What's that fighting game where you use two joysticks to play?
I know vge covered it at some point
Actually it's probably just Buriki One
Clearly we need a helmet controller that just reads your thoughts, that's the most ergonomic controller
Karate Champ?
Virtual On
That's not a fighting game
I mean, yes, the robots fight, but that dosen't count
That's like calling Metal Slug a First Person Shooter because you shoot the first person you see
I think metal slug 3 is probably my favourite FPS
Same, but from hypermobility
I’m only on a touchpad for mouse work and I have to use the lightest keyboards possible and take breaks
doesn't use two sticks, it's a stick + 2 buttons for movement
can't use 2 sticks with buriki one cuz you have to hold both buttons down to block
I knew that felt familar.
CASE CLOSED
daaaab to the left, daaaaaab to the right
oh… damnit 😢
That gif needs a third NO
Yea basically 1 button = 1 special move
I mean aren’t we already there mostly since Guilty Gear Xrd with the alternative gameplay features also found in Street Fighter 6
Bring back 1 frame links, remove the stupid modern frame buffers, bring it all back
Even the glorious 2D sprites (Street Fighter 4 was awesome though before character design in Street Fighter 5 went incredibly south)
Street fighting needs to go back to just being something you do in real life with your friends
No frame buffers, no easy one frame links, you're supporting your local scene
and extra costumes are less expensive
I bought the Mayflash F500, it's great for my needs. Thanks!
Good to hear
I always found that company name weird, it sounds like a faulty nand chip
"It MAY flash, but probably won't"
I miss street fighter 4 so much
what insane times those were
I'm currently playing Mortal Kombat II, the difficulty level in this game was crazy :))))
Damn input reading cheating game.
Really fun game
Street Fighter characters got.... weird after 2
I will never forget that odd move Seth had in 4
Yeah, it is around SSF2T levels of CPU cheating. My experience with the game as a kid was the dos version. Got a MK2 board later on thinking things would be similar and could not even beat the second cpu fight.
Yeah you can’t play for real you have to do silly shit to exploit the AI
maybe like a handful were weird
also acting if a green electric brazilian isnt a bit odd either
Blank was the single weird character, and not even that crazy, he was just a sort of animalistic/hulk like character. About a third of the SF3 cast was weird, and then we have a boss in SF4 with a giant yin-yang beach ball in his chest where he twists around like he's made out of rubber and slams his head into the ground for one of his attacks
Dhalsim also very normal
surely this exists in mugen
popee the performer
luckily I have the option to modify the character's AI behavior in MK2 😅
you're getting your yearly swimsuit costumes and you're gonna like it
I only play the 32x ultimate edition because nerfed ai. No idea if other versions have something similar.
Nothing will top the weirdness of Pocket Fighter though
Damn, can't find a gif of Akuma from Pocket Fighter turning into a clumsy construction worker and then stretching for a swim before diving into an inch tall puddle
Actual moves from that game BTW, didn't make them up. Pretty sure drugs were involved 🤣
Have they said anything about MK1 going out of beta? I thought someone said it was coming with MK2
dunno if that was speculation or something they said.
you should ask on their discord
am I the only one getting very occasionnaly weird glitches in SF2 turbo on mister (cps2 core) ?
Sometimes the screen just "flashes" for like one or two frames of probably garbage, but it's rare (I'm using analog ouput to a PVM, it's the only core (and maybe only game?) where I've seen that happen
Could be like that on a real CPS2 hardware but I doubt it and don't remember seeing it in the hundred of hours I've seen japanese tournaments
If you are talking about Super Turbo It does that on the actual arcade board every now and then.
ah ok, thanks for confirming. I'll get a darksofted CPS2 board soon anyway
Unfortunately, I don't know this, sorry
I really want to see if they do, afaik, midway core on analogue pocket has not gone public after more than a year and a half.
Also can confirm
T Hawk stage has it happen more frequently
And DJ
thanks for also confirming
what's the consensus these days regarding vega (claw) ? remember him being banned in japan at some point but seems no longer the case
I don’t think he’s ever really been banned in Japan
why would they not trust JAMMA epuipment? just make sure that the pin-7 is keyed and you won't do something stupid to it.
overall the speed for CPS1 and CPS2 is not right
I am hopeful that the use of BRAM will help the core out.
yea this test still holds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fR3D0fbRo2w
real hardware is ~1.35% faster than mister cps2 core
Speed test of Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo running on real CPS2 arcade PCB and Updated MiSTer FPGA CPS2 core!
#SuperStreetFighter2Turbo #SSF2T #MiSTerFPGA #Fightcade #Arcade #fightinggames
this test counts everything from start to finish.
if you look at just in-game frames it's a tiny bit wider. Still much better than previous versions. I'm wondering if the accuracy will go up with the use of BRAM.
CPS1 you had to use the turbo mode but had similar speeds
wierd
I'm wondering if all of the other games like A1-A3 would change
A2 runs without a lot of slowdown that made it look more like software emulation than hardware emulation.
it seems there was a least a correlation of later games and better timed games by Capcom. I would like to have seen a crazy game like A2 ChunLi Stage on CPS2 compared to JTCPS2
Has Jotego commented on this speed difference?
yeah, his plan was to move it into BRAM iirc. but with the cps3 work, he hasn't gotten around to it yet
Thanks cps3 crowd
Has there been any news on that front. Obviously friday wasn’t cps3, but there wasn’t an email update (which there has been in weeks past)
Last news i heard was Jotego couldn't get the CPS3 core to boot on MiSTer (it works in simulation but doesn't on the real hardware). He was looking into it to find the reason why.
it will still do this on the darksofted board. that's just how the game is
On the console ROM hacks? Or the Arcade version? (I wasn’t aware that there was an AI Nerf for the arcade)
I believe they added hacks
The Legacy Kollection has an AI nerf option that works very well.
Also a one button fatalities option.
Are you referring to the option that forces the AI difficulty to stay constant throughout the game or is there an option that stop the input monitoring?
this is an extra option available for MK2 core
Just being able to set it super easy and then it doesn't go up in difficulty from fight to fight.
Kintaro can still be a royal PITA, even set to 0 difficulty.
yes it's true, but it's still more fun to play 🙂
Last I played, Sub Zero was really good against AI Kintaro, but that was on the 32x arcade hack.
Street Fighter 2 cheats but most of them pre SS2T are still some fun to play solo because there's a certain art to exploiting the CPU. MK I-III are just a joyless slog without the AI hack because of the non-stop input reading.
Oh, good to know, I didn't know if they'd actually implemented something like that.
defeating mortal kombat ai was always playing the floor is lava with your opponent
jump back jump forward
you catch the ai in a loop like that
I maintain my case. That's absolutely no fun to play.
yeah i mean as a game mk was always pretty dog shit imho
but as an experience it’s like one of the best games ever
the atmosphere, sound effects etc
i’ll always love me some mortal kombat.
landing a bone crushing uppercut and hearing the announcer go “oooooooo”
i love ki for the same reasons
MK was always super fun to play with friends but awful to play solo in the arcades
I did enjoy MK1, subzero freeze, jump kick, slide and repeat! Everything you needed for 1cc. It really was just warm up till a second player showed up.
that is the first video game combo I ever learned
Also agreed. The music and sound and backgrounds are all top notch.
Shang Tsung in the distant throne with all the monks watching. Iconic.
gameplay-wise i'll agree that MK1/2 havent aged that gracefully but UMK3 still plays fantastic
presentation in MK1 and 2 is through the roof though, and had a lot to do with it's insane degree of popularity in the 90s
they're all very annoying to play arcade mode though, you do not play for real you just do dumb AI exploits
Of the old 2D MK games, MK2 easily has the best presentation/production values. UMK3 easily has the best gameplay.
It was pretty clear that they either had to cut back on finisher quality especially in MK3 due to either time constraints or a larger roster making it less viable to do unique death animations for each character.
The ones where they just punch them really really hard ot kick them really really hard were always lame
A lot of them are just the bodies getting chopped up via generic cuts to the sprites. You'd even see arms just floating in the air.
The best finishers are the ones where the unique death animation is the same for every character. Like Sektor's clamp fatality, or Reptile's acid fatality.
Course, that means you can't do it properly on anyone that didn't have human preportions or shapes
Like Sheeva, Goro, or Motaro
It also has the crazy hidden boss fights.
And even before that, I remember when Reptile was just a rumor and it turned out to be true.
Alpha is the first game of that generation that I remember feeling like it had a fair arcade mode.
(It still feels that way today)
Yeah, Reptile being real was one of the rare times those videogame secrets rumors you heard during the playground ended up actually being true
I remember being shocked when the Hadouken in Megaman x ended up being real
LOL at myself falling for EGM turning an SFII mis-translation into a rumor.
I remember reading an article from that magazine once where they admitted Shen Long was an April Fools prank and were posting messages from people who fell for it or realized it was fake, and one of them was of someone posting about how they unlocked him. The magazine had a sarcastic reply about how they should look into it more in that case
you need to use strength to move the truck to find mew
Only one I fell for was the first one they did with the Simon Belmont code for TMNT The Arcade Game on the NES. Never fell for it again after that!
Of course, nowadays where it's standard for sych people to data mine games it's going to be hard to hide something like a character that needs actual assets, the most you can hide is something in the code for a feature or easter egg
I fell for one that originally I thought was fake. Pikablu, I originally insisted it was fake, which was correct, but later changed my mind because of a translation error in the first Pokemon game which hinted that Raichu could evolve
There are NPCs in the game which you can trade Pokemon with, just about all of them will say the Pokemon you traded them evolved. Just about all of them have you trade a Pokemon that can evolve so that's not an issue, but one of them asks for a Raichu. Apparently in the original Japanese version they asked for something else but for some reason in the US version it was changed to Raichu, without changing that evolved message.
About that... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2x3pIvVnP4
I rebuilt the "virus" for Pokemon Red and Blue with far more powerful capabilities this time. And in the spirit of completely blowing the mind of a kid from 1998, I used it to bring one of their rumors to life.
To convert your save file to one containing the virus, use the following Python program.

The Kollection is on sale right now. It sounds like they made enough improvements that I will probably pick it up just to have a legal/nerf-friendly collection of the Arcade versions.
And if CC's version ever goes public, all the better.
$32.50....tempting
The documentary is good too.
It's worth it on PC and Xbox for sure. I'd avoid it on Switch and PS5 though. Still a lot of input lag in those versions.
now that it has working VRR its very good, at least for single player
Does anyone know who MK1 and MK2 have screen tearing even with vsync=2 and VRR working?
I have to set vsync=0 for it to work without tearing.
For me, it doesn't matter whether it's an MK or another core; with my Samsung TV and VRR enabled, I always get screen tearing at the bottom.
The only solution is to turn off the GAME Mode option on the TV
then it works fine
I also have a 6 year old QLED. You mean it could be the TV?
So vsync2 with VRR but no game mode?
yes
It works fine for me
But switching game mode on/off really annoys me, so I set VSync to 0 for MK1/2
the same problem
yeah, samsungs don't like the fake vrr where we just setup the vrr infoframes but send a 'normal' signal
I plan to buy a LG oled next. Are those better?
LG C5 and G5 OLEDs are incredible. Can't go wrong either way.
Samsungs usually are over saturated and most movie buffs don't like them because they aren't accurate unless you pay to get them professionally calibrated. Sony is generally considered (at least on their high end tvs) to have the best color accuracy out of the box. But having come from a Sony A95K to an LG G5 I gotta say the LG G5 is the most incredible TV I've ever owned for all use cases.
I have a samsung and am surprised how well it can handle retro signals, though it's hdmi cutting out sometimes is very annoying
Has seperate composite and component when most tvs nowadays use those as the same port (though they do share the audio inputs) and handled 240p from retrovision cables correctly without missing or interlaced frames
c5 is the best tv ive ever owned and its not even close
Definitely if it's good enough. Cps3 setups are stupidly expensive and annoying to set up
I played on an actual board for ST and I had trouble doing DPs because I do them too fast. Got too used to playing on mister. Yes that's my excuse lol
It's an amazing tv. I bought my wife the 77 C5 and got myself a 77 G5 and they are best tvs I've ever owned.
Must be pretty old if it still has analog inputs, I don't think I've seen that on a TV in the past 6 years or so.
It's a 2017 model I think, what, do modern TVs not still have at least component?
Pretty sure all of them even still have RF for an antenna
The last two tv's I've bought over the last 2 years had nothing but HDMI.
Yeah, looking at TVs now it's all HDMI, tht's disappointing. Even the ones that have a seperate breakout box where they would more than have enough room for analog inputs dno't, even though they still have rf
Gotta have rf for ye olde digital OTA
My baby
ah yes it happened even at evo on real hardware lol
Had some friends over and was telling them how accurate mister was, when the glitch hit, and everyone was just, did you see that? No way that happens on real hardware! Took me a while to find out it does.
20 years ago people use to blame it on Kaillera then I got my board and was like wait a minute…
Wonder if Capcom either didn't catch that or considered it not worth fixing, seems like a pretty big one to let go
Never saw that on my OG cps2 board, maybe revision specific?
CPS1 hardware will do wierd stuff like flash a 1 frame cross hatch pattern. At least as far as SF2 CE and later are concerned...
At this point, is it pretty well accepted that the CPS2 core still runs a bit fast even after the revisions earlier this year?
That is, I know there has been debate for some time about the accuracy, but is that where the conversation on it currently stands?
Fixes are planned but not until cps3 is out. Moving some things to bram iirc.
Red Earth booting up in simulation, all layers finally visible. Very short simulation, but sound works, graphics works. Palette and garbled tiles are easy to fix, no worries. #MiSTerFPGA #CPS3
Has he gotten it booting on device yet?
If you add fixup before the x dot com, the video embed works.
done
There are a couple other prefixes some people around here use
I use stupidpenis because that’s the only one I remember
yeah, he just sent out an update. sounds like we are close
Those memories with Andreas Naive, from May 2007.
what the fuck
perfection
Smear frames rule
ryu getting beat up by a weird bomberman girl
I like day vedeo garm
Reminds me of the smear frames in The Dover Boys. I think the artist nearly got fired for that, but now it's a common animation technique.
Because it's difficult
Has there been any word of MK being released publicly?
Bro that's their bread n butter for their patreon, that's gonna be in "beta testing" and I use that term loosely for probably ever lol
I ain’t hating but really, Mortal Kombat? Isn’t MK2 much better?
MK2 is also part of what I predict to be the "forever in beta" Patreon plan
Mk2 is much better.
Can be played while still having fun, though of course umk3 is better.
I don't think it'll be much longer till it's public. It's been in beta for about a month now for part 1 and less than a month for part 2.
Have they brought anything out of beta yet?
No, but I believe they said something was coming the first week in June
It'll magically become "public" when CPS3 Alpha/Beta drops or when JT starts working on Midway, totally not a coincidence
Of course. Just mere chance 😆
Their midway core has been in beta on the pocket for nearly 2 years. And no cores under their current licensing have gone public yet. I wouldn't hold my breath. You want their cores, just pony up.
Even if it becomes public I won't touch anything those people are involved in.
I'd love MK1 and 2 on Mister, hopefully at some point in the future Jotego works on it.
also from what I heard, they might be sabotaging their entire codebase by slapping the wrong licenses and makes it incompatible with GPL
They've released several public cores and core updates. I don't see why they wouldn't release Midway eventually. I know some games that run on it are still in alpha though.
but have they released any source codes?
I'm no expert on that but I could have sworn they had public code out there. Maybe not recent stuff but older cores.
exactly, all their newer stuff isn't released because they demand "perfection", which is arbitrary
I do have an idea why though
Is that a completely bad thing?
all of erin's old cores are still available on their repo. atrac privated all of his GPL licensed cores. Pramod archived the old version of their raizing cores. In leiu of releasing source code, they instead harass anyone who asks
have you ever seen a repo that is perfect and not needing any updates?
Its pretty childish
No, but I've also seen stuff released in broken states or having regression breakage. I'm sure there's a middle ground there.
But I guess time will ultimately tell right?
Sure, but currently, its looking like they don't want to release anything because they want to make money
I don't know if that's the case. I don't think so. But we can agree to disagree. A year from now I guess we'll know for sure, lol.
i definitely think cores will come out of beta
but they won't release the source code
they have made that pretty clear
without directly saying it
Yeah, I can't speak to the source code. But I am confident these will come out of beta.
finally achieved it, and could do it 4 times in last 30 minutes or so, god bless
I need a tier list of 3rd strike's hardest combos so I can try others
Good stuff
You should try it on other characters
Since their fall speed and hurtboxes are all different
It might be hardest on chun
Pretty much every difficult combo in this game boils down to a single properly timed juggle, it has overall pretty easy execution
Most famous examples i can think of at the moment are urien triple tackle headbutt
Akuma triple tatsu
Dudley triple mgb
There is also the combo trials lua script that somebody made for fbneo
https://youtube.com/shorts/SgQqkebwwCs?si=HH8n-S0LVjCNhj9M
This guy also posts some pretty cool ones
#streetfighter #3rdstrike #akuma
oh yea back then I played Urien and I had horrible success rate at the triple headbutt
do the makoto sa2 tod on akuma 👀
is that harder ?
you basically just do the combo you did on akuma once, he gets stunned then you taunt (for the damage buff) and do the combo on him again and he dies
ah yea, the rest is really easy, but it's a TOD on almost all the cast iirc ? I don't see what would be specific to akuma
Nothing, he dies without having to do double fukiage
Which i think happens to remy too
The combos in KOF XIII training mode are a nightmare, I give it a shot every so often when I feel a little too cocky about my skill. Very humbling lol
I'm pretty sure the makoto sa2 TOD would be way easier on a hitbox, I mean everything is basically easier on hitbox (of course when you master it, just like a stick)
I just refuse to switch because I'm arcade cabinet focused, the standard is and will always be a stick to me
nah not really, arcade games feel ass on a hitbox
stuff like dashing and such is ezpz but trying to do half circles sucks because you can miss diagonal inputs or even accidentally skipping the down input entirely if you do it too fast/sloppily
it's especially a nightmare if you don't know stuff like button holding for specials
actual combos outside of trials are pretty easy once you get the hang of it though
I'm also playing sf2 turbo again and learning T hawk and I find it really hard to do 360 negative edge option select stuff, I guess my timing is really bad
standing 360 is a no issue tho (it makes you also appreciate how easy it is since street fighter 3)
Or buy the Mortal Kombat Legacy Collection which I hear is now awesome?
This. It's great now.
The man has a trophy in his name, how can you not trust him
As long as you play it on PC or XBOX. Input lag is still a problem on PS4/5 and Switch 1/2.
Do I need to enter a QR code to play it?
See, this man Kombats
and can I play it on more than one device?
I don’t get it but that sounds kinda neat
fuck it now we learning Hugo
Finally CPS3 boots on FPGA. The compiler was doing a wrong simplification breaking the logic.
This was debugged on a SiDi128 that has a broken video DAC, hence the odd colors
Mister only knows how to do one thing, and one thing only. Win
