The thing with referencing something is that one might reference the bugs as well

untold mortar

I would like to know their data collection policies and how their databases are stored.

Are they officially registered to carry out this data collection, and is obsolete data properly deleted from their systems at the end of the service rental period ?

This is a rental period that is automatically renewed every 2nd of the month, if I understand well.
Patreon is officially registered for doing data collection and their policies are clear on what they do with it, but they use a system external to Patreon for this DRM, so they must also be registered and declared for doing it (at least legally).

Furthermore, are they GDPR compliant? If not, they are not authorized to do business with individuals from Europe.

That's me knackered in the UK if correct! 🙂

Yeah no thanks, closed source is antithetical to the MiSTer project that they owe their existence to. Aka they can suck it

ancient prawn
untold mortar
#

I have nothing against them, but I know people who are much more meticulous about this kind of thing.

And it could happen, quite quickly. That would be a shame...

The same kind of people who already went after atrac17 a few years ago, with his issues with his Redump ISO repositories, where he was using the collective's logos without their permission, as well as distributing the files directly.
That didn't end well.

native echo
#

the whole thing stinks

#

they're awful people doing awful things

#

they upset virtually everyone who comes in contact with them

silent plank
#

Do they release their cores to the general public like JT does after a while? I wouldn't mind waiting if they do. I am not fond of adding drm to my mister.

cosmic vault
#

We don't know what things are going to look like going forward. Their post is likely just poorly worded, but it says that "Not all core releases will require a Patron membership, but the majority going forward will". I dunno if that means that new releases, or all releases

#

time will have to tell

toxic jacinth
#

I joined their Patreon last night hoping to get the Midway releases, only to find out that $5 only gets you MK1 and requires you to jump through DRM hoops. I will not be renewing at the end of the month.

weak laurel
#

how does DRM on the mister work? you need to be always online?

lone girder
#

Maybe I'm nuts but to me the way they're handling this goes against everything the Mister project is about so they won't be getting any money from me

languid path
#

wait, coin-op added DRM to their mortal kombat cores?

#

lmao fuck that, i hope they get leaked and cracked

subtle belfry
#

I find amazing how these coin-op collection guys manage to annoy everyone they come in contact. Last few months I was starting to consider joining their patreon, as they seemed like were redeeming themselves after MARS fiasco and etc, but no, atrac17 always manage to find ways to be a jerk, always proving that people never change

#

I'll contribute to srg320 and others that provide meaningful progress for the MiSTer and preservation community, amazing guys out there that are really talented

silent plank
#

When I heard JT was planning to do MK1/MK2 next after CPS3 I thought it was unnecessary as COC was releasing their core. The DRM, paid subscription and closed source puts things in a new perspective.

fathom cedar
#

Yeah, closed source subscription? That is not what MiSTer is about. I'd rather play the MK Legacy Kollection than pay them a monthly subscription fee.

lone girder
#

yeah for sure. F those clowns

fathom cedar

Thankfully the Legacy Kollection is actually pretty good now on PC.

Just avoid it on PS5 and Switch.

$10 is with Narc and Smash?

Money poisons every well it touches. Jotego's method is coherent, you reward the development, then eventually everyone gets to enjoy the fruits. Not all controversy is 'good for business'

Also, how is this considered preservation when the core expires every month? Their patreon goes offline, so does the access/preservation 🙄

night tulip
#

Just saw the amount of data they pull from your Patreon account to get access to the alpha/beta cores. I'm surprised people are okay with that. We'll see how long they keep these cores behind their paywall. I'm guessing they'll try to milk it as long as they can.

I bought a rpi 5 with power adapter and mini hdmi adapter for $65 and it plays those games fine without putting weird shit on my MiSTer.

night tulip
#

Am I right in saying that a Midway core isn't as big a deal as the CPS core was, in that CPS had been poorly emulated for years while Midway has been emulated with fairly high accuracy? I'm definitely looking forward to having access to the Midway games on MiSTer, but I don't remember noticing significant differences between my MK PCB and MAME. SF2 on MiSTer was a revelation and I honestly haven't used my SF2 PCB since.

livid flare
#

Btw is it just the beta that’s closed source + DRM’d? Or it’s forever?

night tulip
#

Does CoC release the source to their cores? I thought they only release the binaries. They've been making a big deal about some special framework they had to build to make Midway possible. I doubt they have any plans to make that available any time soon.

cosmic vault
#

So it sounds like it will be like jotego in that regard

mystic stump
#

Not stirring the pot, just taking a firm position here..hopefully as many devs and supporters can push back on this dangerous precedent re the data collection, and temporary access, with something like Gamepass, the consumer knows off the bat they dont own any of the IP's and neither do any of the FPGA core creators. It creates a mercenary philosophy where the patron is not only paying one Corporate entity but two. It is too divisive, bad dialectics leave no winners in the long term.

livid flare
#

but hang on now, if it's really like jotego's then (i.e, all open sourced after beta, public accessible binaries)...whats the issue?

#

(other than that dude being a complete jerk ass to everyone and dev out there)

cosmic vault
#

They haven’t released any core source in a year

silent plank
mystic stump

People are always what they do, not what they say. As Paul Weller from the Jam wrote "The public get's what the public wants" The Patreon data consolidation issue is serious..we cannot allow ourselves to become Barcodes.

Look at the the consequences of not being able to pay for Cash at all times. I think It was Nelson Rockefella who said something like *Paraphrasing 'There's a $20 dollar bill down the back of many a Sofa's and I want them.' I have no problem Patronising tech work, but locking them behind suspiciously long BETA status's could become 'plausible deniability' if this particular model becomes normative.

languid path
#

did coin-op ever follow up on their fixes for zero wing/tatsujin-ou and such or were those left in the dust too

cosmic vault
#

I think they got updated? It’s hard to tell what’s been updated and what hasn’t because they distributed builds in their discord too

#

Someone should just grab the code that is open for those cores and update them

mystic stump
#

'A person's reputation often precedes them' I hope *sigh that team Coin-op reconsider this explicit model, and just go the Jotego route..I guess that's all I got to say, time will tell yadda yadda.

#

and the power adapter and hdmi adapter from amazon

livid flare

with a case and all...might just as well by a used business PC from ebay and miles more powerful.

ruby grail
#

pi does 240p

#

and the newest version of windows 10 I have doesn't understand even know how to do 480p

#

it's just 1080p scaled to look like 480p

#

i think win10 used to know in the past, but it's a rolling release so they break things

livid flare
#

that's true. although pi's composite output while respectable, it's 720x480

unkempt kernel
livid flare
#

so Pi's 240p isn't gonna get pixel perfect...thus I switched to MiSTer

ruby grail
#

tbh, I don't play the midway stuff enough to know how good it is

#

i've been using it more for other arcade cores

#

replayos sends the 240p out through the hdmi cable

livid flare
#

oh ok so you aren't using composite out then

ruby grail
#

nope

#

transcoding to vga

#

livid flare
#

only replayOS can? can batocera do that?

ruby grail
#

no idea

#

replayos has a mister like interface, which is good

#

and batocera uses retroarch? which is bad

#

so I haven't used batocera in 5+ years

#

Replayos is from the rgbpi team, so they care about 240p, but I'm not sure about batocera.

#

i prefer mister cores for almost everything, but in the last few weeks i have found replayos to be a simple option for non-mister stuff

night tulip
#

RetroArch and LibRetro are the same team

ruby grail
#

But the ui is bad

night tulip
#

Batocera doesn't use the RetroArch UI. It uses Emulation Station

ruby grail
#

But do you still have the RA menu?

#

That's how it was last i used it

night tulip
#

Depends what you want to do. You can manage nearly all configuration directly through Emulation Station

ruby grail
#

This is still a lot of layers of complexity

#

If you're playing mame, how many menus are there for mapping inputs, that are all independent of one another?

#

With separate config files

#

1 in emulation station. 2 in retro arch. 1 in mame.

#

I count 4-that's insane

night tulip
#

Are you saying that you make custom mappings for each game?

ruby grail
#

No

#

I'm saying that is confusing as hell

night tulip
#

You map once in EmuStation and only need to map in the emulators for custom mappings. Batocera automatically maps to each emulator.

ruby grail
#

How do you do it for mame

night tulip
#

Just map in Emulation Station. That's all. You don't have to touch the configs in the emulators.

ruby grail
#

Okay if that's the case then they fixed it

night tulip
#

It's been like that for the entire time I've used it, which is more than 10 years now.

#

Actually, it might be nearly exactly 10 years

#

Nope, 9 years.

ruby grail
#

I still think it's too many layers. If You’re supposed to use emulation station for everything, is that menu accessible while you're playing a game in the core?

night tulip
#

No. You'd access the emulator's menu if needed when playing a game.

ruby grail
#

Insane

night tulip
#

It's a front end for more than just libretro cores. Not quite sure what you're expecting. If all you want is libretro, then maybe it's not for you.

ruby grail
#

Yes i think that is a bad interface and it is not for me

#

I think replayos is a better frontend

night tulip
#

ReplayOS is much more limited in the systems it supports. As I said, if you only care about those systems then that's great. It's a completely different beast than Batocera.

lone girder
#

Man after seeing that info CoC demands of you, I dunno how to say it nicely, but CoC can get fucked

#

Let em know 😂

night tulip

It's a shame, as that team is bringing some great cores, but their attitude in the community is atrocious.

young gull

What you don’t want to rent MK month to month where they can cut you off at any moment because of some made up petty bullshit? But it’s such a sweet deal. Also it’s always a good idea to send personal info to people who have tried to get revenge by contacting employers, spouses and filing spurious lawsuits

I’m looking forward to future terms where you have to join their discord and tell atrac and pram0d they are ‘very stable geniuses’ once a week or get banned

silent plank

We have a choice and that's what matters. Vote with your wallets. I was set on joining their Patreon for MK2 even being closed source, but drm and being a rental was info I didn't had before. Hope they come around.

Good deal, thank ya.

untold mortar
#

I'm not an IP lawyer at all, and this should be double-checked, but it's the bare minimum.

We can't find any legal information on their Patreon page, nor on the external CoC license page.
Their clause in the CoC License Manager has no legal value and cannot be invoked in an agreement binding on the customer.

As per example, no entity or legal person is declared as registered with the U.S. Department of Commerce, and no declaration regarding personal data protection obligations is made in the United States or the European Economic Area is viewable on their pages.

Furthermore, no Data Protection Officer (DPO) is registered or clearly mentioned, no external data controller is designated, and we have no access to the collected data, even upon simple request (for example, to find out why and how it is used internally).

No legal guarantees regarding the collected data are clearly mentioned on their pages.

Therefore, their data collection appears to be completely illegal under several US federal laws, and they also cannot conduct business in the European Economic Area.

#

What surprises me most is that their team includes someone specializing in big data processing and engineering.

These kinds of legal details are taught as a basic principle in specialized university courses, particularly the types of declarations required before launching any kind of data collection.

EDIT : Typo & clarification about declaration policies.

Simply have a question and a request for verification with the United States Department of Commerce firstly, regarding their registration procedure and their policies for protecting sensitive data following collection from a site without a legal page.
If they are in compliance, no further action is taken; otherwise, they may be prosecuted for illegal collection of personal data, and be prohibited from any commercial activity, as well as subject to an administrative fine.

fathom cedar
#

I mean, I saw a comment in PixelCherryNinja's video yesterday from someone who joined their Patreon at the $5 tier and just left a comment that they want to help fund development but don't want to jump through registration hoops for MiSTer cores, and that they were more than happy to stay subscribed without getting the core just to fund development. That's all they said, and yet they had their subscription immediately canceled and they were blocked from accessing their Patreon going forward. That's the kind of vindictive bahavior people are giving up their personal info to. Can't even imagine what they plan to do with it.

young gull
subtle night
#

im uh curious how their framework would access things like system date and hardware ids

#

or somehow access the internet which i doubt it's doing

#

like isn't a core just an rbf file that is burned to the fpga, so its not like they can do anything that's not already currently exposed via linux / main

#

but maybe it's just a one way hash of the hardware id / valid timestamp and then they just read that and compare using their private key

#

someone would have to test with an expired key by rolling back the date or something

lament barn
#

It is not true that the game stops working after a month; an upgrade is only necessary when, for example, a new version of the core is released.

Holy shit

subtle night
#

i mean okay, the faq implies that your key could suddenly stop working

#

also the fact that you wont have to update your license key if you pay in advance for a year

#

having something that only changes validity on new closed source core releases is even weirder

#

like that implies they just invalidate every key

lament barn
#

The author's response to the question of whether it is necessary to renew the key every month. He writes:

"Not necessarily. Your key at present will work on the MK indefinitely now. However, if there are updated builds, or other things released later, you'll have to generate a new key. A yearly sub doesn't have to generate keys every month, just once a year"

Looks like a lot of misinformation is rampant within #misterfpga community around #CoinOpCollection recent Midway beta. #arcade

Let's talk facts...

Yes, Accessing Midway beta requires authorizing Patreon to share information.

The following information is shared:
-Patreon

subtle night
#

the word "misinformation" is strong here, even though there's not a consistent message outside of a discord lol

lament barn
#

I'm just a player; I'm not interested in any conflicts, and I never have been. Everyone can vote with their wallet.

lol

#

which is not clearly disclosed

lament barn
#

I didn't read it closely, but I think the authors gave their consent for publication

#

Unfortunately, I don't have time to keep up with all of this

random bone

This should all really be spelled out clearly from the getgo on their own sources of information, which is both patreon and their own website. Not through twitter after the fact.

glacial moat
#

I think an important point is what Zet mentioned, are they even legally eligble to collect data?

subtle night
#

sure why not

glacial moat
#

works for me 😎

subtle night
#

also hyp36's rebuttal was that the patreon admins could already see this information

glacial moat
#

I worked with a ton of GDPR practices and policies, and you do not want to play

subtle night
#

oh in terms of that stuff

#

lol

#

thats' more on how they're storing it and what they do with it

#

and if they have a way to delete it

#

but you could hand wave it as a "requirement for doing business" a lot of the time

#

we dont even know if they're storing the info that pateron is sharing

#

you're also giving consent to share it

#

but yeah so like whats UNCLEAR is if they can retroactivitely revoke beta access to cores you have access to

#

or if somehow a beta core you have downloaded will suddenly stop working given no other outside circumstances

#

like JT cores are the same

glacial moat
#

I think thats because of Update all in my case

#

because it always fetches the latest core

subtle night
#

but like if you have a jotego build from 2024 and the 2024 key, it should work

#

even if you've stopped paying etc

#

the fact that there's even room for interpretation here is a failure on their part

glacial moat
#

if thats possible, I wonder why these guys are going the extra mile to lock people out lol

subtle night
#

the other thing that's not clear is like, okay MK is a $5 tier core

#

but like the other two cores??? wouldn't they use the same key as MK

#

lol

glacial moat
#

that upsell is so scummy lmao

subtle night
#

either way, all this friction is funny for some ROI

#

more drama, more complaints, probably a drop in patreon subscribers

#

but offset by some new subs

lavish slate
#

Are there any vids of the beta in action?

subtle night

subtle night
#

well they had a ton of good will built up from teasing mortal kombat finally on mister

#

and their new framework

#

lol

#

mostly speaking for myself

glacial moat
#

I 100% believe that MK and Midway was such a sunken cost, it became their carrot to dangle

#

like how many years was that in development? 2-3?

subtle night
#

like am i going to subscribe just for midway cores? no
would i try to pirate said beta cores if they were piratable? no
am i going to circumvent whatever DRM they've put in place? no

#

like i'd be curious how easy it would be to break

#

but also it's not worth the effort

glacial moat
#

yeah, if their system is truly above board, the cost of maintaining it will eat into their profits

subtle night
#

isn't primal rage one of those games that has never been accurately emulated

It's not even about the money, I don't trust someone that seems to want so much of your personal and account info to access their cores, as well as the overbearing number of steps that hardware-lock the key to your specific mister that they require. Last device I recall that did that was the PSIO and that information was definitely abused...

Not some, all, it was a secutiry measure. Well, the batteries dying wasn't a security measure, the security was that the games were encrypted and the key was stored on voltable sram kept alive by a battery that would wipe if it was tampered with. Problem is of course that batteries don't last forever, though they tended to last a decade or two. The roms are untouched though, it's just their decryption key that gets wiped, not any of the actual rom data.

CPS3 had something like that too IIRC, except now it was a whole cart-shaped dongle you had to plug in along with the game disk, and I think they were even more sensative.

Properly maintained cabs have no issues. Cps 3 boards don't really have issues as long as they are properly stored and most importantly, Darksoft'd. Besides the on-board ASICs, the majority of components have easily-sourced counterparts.

I'm still for the most accessible solution being the standard as long as it's good enough, though.

I'm out of the FGC loop since reaching the highest ranks in guilty gear strive, but I don't get why so many customized setups. People nowadays have accepted things like Leverless, while to me it makes no sense as it was a 30+ year old standard, motions taking more time on lever added deepness into the games imho, but I guess you gotta live with your times.

I can at least use an arcade stick occasionally for a bit and have some fun, but a leverless is a no-go. It still Fs up my right hand using the buttons, but at least I save my left hand to get by.

Sometimes the screen just "flashes" for like one or two frames of probably garbage, but it's rare (I'm using analog ouput to a PVM, it's the only core (and maybe only game?) where I've seen that happen

they're all very annoying to play arcade mode though, you do not play for real you just do dumb AI exploits

fathom cedar
#

Of the old 2D MK games, MK2 easily has the best presentation/production values. UMK3 easily has the best gameplay.

#

It was pretty clear that they either had to cut back on finisher quality especially in MK3 due to either time constraints or a larger roster making it less viable to do unique death animations for each character.

void bronze
#

The ones where they just punch them really really hard ot kick them really really hard were always lame

fathom cedar
#

A lot of them are just the bodies getting chopped up via generic cuts to the sprites. You'd even see arms just floating in the air.

The best finishers are the ones where the unique death animation is the same for every character. Like Sektor's clamp fatality, or Reptile's acid fatality.

Course, that means you can't do it properly on anyone that didn't have human preportions or shapes
