What or who is insideGadgets?
A company who makes several PCB boards and adapters.
Some homebrews could use the EXT Link cable connection for connecting a mouse and/or a keyboard.
I got my gb cartridge flasher and some cartridges from them. Very cool for your own romhacks.
They are Australia based as well which is really nice, it’s rare to not have to import quality retro stuff here
No if you think about the resolution of gameboy 240x160 vs the full screen 320 x 240 the scaling would be absolutely awful
I believe either the downloader or update_all grabs them automatically now
Wow a lot of updates to the gameboy core
Thanks for the timer rebase being pushed.
Wow the Game Boy core got a lot of changes.
No problem, glad I could make the time to getting it merged!
The changes appear extra long because some of the commits are duplicated, from a rebase and I didn't catch it 🤦
But yeah, some really nice QOL changes, a rewrite of the hardware timers to be more accurate and based on the latest research.
This this fix the green flicker when using the sbg palette in pokemon red & blue?
is GB core approaching NES core levels of perfection now?
Some tests are still failing, but we are not yet in complete agreement on their validity.
I thought Paul fixed that?
Yeah, back in November https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Gameboy_MiSTer/pull/275
I take it thats not part of update_all yet?
no, last release was june
Got the latest unstable core and it really works! So happy to replay gen1 with a fresh palette.
I tested it last night by playing Trip World
and I tried a bunch of different palettes throughout
Beat a game tonight! "Trip World" on the Game Boy (over Mister FPGA) using a Super Station One and the new Unstable GB Core. Spiritual Successor to GIMMICK on the NES / Famicom, made by SunSoft 1992. Real fun game, with a decent challenge and kind of weird but in a good way!
Watch me live at https://twitch.tv/xybur
the only bug I can report is the following, and I'm not sure if its system wide or if its just specific to trip world, but if you enable cheats on the mister menu, and then change the palette of the game after that, the cheat effects become disabled
and the cheat has to be toggled off and on again to be activated again
i tested save states, all the miscellaneous video options, frame blending, etc and it all seems to work pretty well
I still can't get over how cool pokemon red&blue are with the sgb palette.
Does MiSTer support the GBA link cable over SNAC?
i heard there was work being done on a cycle accurate core for the gba
i imagine once that is completed, it should be able to
Nice. I bought some GBA link cable ports ages ago for the sake of building an adapter.
What is the MegaDuck Laptop support that's been added to the latest unstable? I'm awarey of the Laptop, but unsure what was actually added here?
The mapper with SRAM save/load, keyboard, and RTC.
Timlex, sounds like a name you would find on a knockoff watch.
do we need to do pins in here?
thanks Zet !
Is there a setting I need to enable for the game boy core to play homebrew games? Trying to play the Yakuza GB Demake
I didn't try it but what is the issue you have ?
Do you know the mapper of this game ?
I will try it also
It won’t go past the Nintendo logo when I load the rom. It’s a brand new homebrew so I don’t know the mapper
It kinda works for me on the current core.
But the graphical issues are from the core, the game is bugged and the dev is aware of that.
Does it work on original hardware?
According to the dev it does
Sure but you gotta verify yourself. Not doubting the dev but having more than one person verify is always preferable
I gotcha I just don’t have og game boy hardware
@fleet scroll confirmed it worked on my side with last unstable Gambeboy core testing on GB/GBC mode.
Interesting. Are you allowed to say where you got the rom from since it’s a homebrew?
itch.io website I think it is the same Zet may used. It is the first one listed if we search "Yakuza GB demake"
Yep!
Thanks, I just had a bad rom
Cool !
I'm gonna have to do something with my big, expertly curated, loose cart gba collection. I'm gonna swirl my hand in the sea of carts and pull one out everyday. Clean it test it and maybe list it.
Today's random cart is...
He tower?
I remember this one fondly
It had a cozy night time shoes clacking down an empty hallway vibe
One of my favorite PC/Mac games (SimTower), I still have yet to play the GBA one. Took a dip into The Tower 2 (Yoot Tower) at some point but I remember having some kind of issue with it.
It's a great game! I haven't played the pc game but I did notice it is part of the 0mhz collection on MiSTer.
Maybe I'll fire it up someday!
I am still a massive fan of the first game, it's absolutely worth playing! I originally played it on Mac so just keep that in mind, there's a few options available. IIRC the game speed is very heavily dependent on system clock.
It's what yanks call a pick-up truck.
I'm swirling my hand in the sea of gba carts again...
...swirling...
Boom!
Interesting one! Never got around to playing it but always wanted to because I love Wizardry.
I own that one too, neat game
A man of impeccable taste! 🧐
Driver 2 is the best game on gba, don't even @ me.
Played mazes of fate for a while, then found out there is a DS version with better graphics, so I put it aside until some day
Cool! Did not know about the DS version! I'll look forward to checking it out 😃
haha I had no idea either
Maybe I'll wait till the ds core comes out.. eh guys? Eh? Eeeeeehhh?
That sounds like something a wizard would say...
Accusing a non wizard of being a wizard is exactly the type of thing an undercover wizard would do...
I think you're thinking of warlocks
We are, of course, in the presence of an actual wizard here...
An fpga wizard
FPGAzumSpass
There's no doubt about that
There's (at least) another three wizards around here I can think about...
One's from Ukraine, another is a female, and there's another who's Wicker than a Waka
Plunging my hand into the sea of carts again...
Excellent Outrun port

Random gba loose cart time!
Look
At
Dis!!!
I like tactics games
Labels a bit faded
Really loved onimusha back in the day. Hope they bring 3 and dawn of dreams to modern platforms as well.
I finished ff1 recently and am playing ff2 right now. But the nes versions. Great games.
They are really beautiful games. I think there is something especially cool about both games being neatly contained in this little cart. I carried this around in a little hot pink! gba micro for awhile.
Had a bit of trouble getting this one to boot
But it works now after cleaning
Look!!
Bootiful
Honestly I've heard of the GBA Final Fantasies as being the best Final Fantasies
a decent source of GBM faceplates hasn't sprung up in the 6 months since i last checked has it?
I just need a decent repro of the Famicom 1P faceplate and I’m good
i'd take any color as long as the fit is actually good
I have a solid red one and it’s ok, but definitely not great
I found a repro famicom one and it was absolutely horrid
most i've tried have been like, slightly too thick in a way that makes the buttons and dpad to protrude enough
yes too thick
maybe i should just sand one down or something
yeah I was even going to try to polish my OG famicom one but it’s pretty cumbersome
Swirling my hand in the sea of carts again...
The best co-op two player game in the world?
but is it the best co-op experience on a single GBA?
This game has coop? like in GBA2P you could play it?
You better believe it brosef!
Are there co-op experiences on a single gba!
Maybe there is a cart in the sea of carts hiding this very secret!!
wario ware has several mini games where you share the console!
i thought for a moment Bubble Bobble did the same thing each player would only need 3 buttons
Puzzle Fighter 2 also had a 2-player mode where you were supposed to each use half the system like some kind of cocktail arcade cabinet, clearly intended for the original gba and not the sp
Can GBA2P do download play?
It currently does not support the mode where player 2 loads the game from player 1
Ah
Random cart pull time!
Whats it gonna be...
I remember keeping my eyes peeled for this game after reading in a magazine that it had nothing really to do with soccer or David Beckham
But was in fact a cool fun little platformer
It eventually popped up in a local charity shop
Denki was an interesting little company.
I sent an email to odelot, the guy that’s been releasing forked cores with RetroAchievements. Despite all the other systems, the original GameBoy/GBC has a blank Releases page. https://github.com/odelot/Gameboy_MiSTer/releases
We’ll see if this changes. It would be nice. His work is excellent.
He's been in the retroachivements thread too if you have questions
Thank you for the tip!!
That above link is now appropriately loading and can be accessed. GameBoy cheevos for all!
Gonna post my loose cart cleaning escapades in the gba thread.
i'm always a bit surprised nobody has done that before
all those usb romdumper things tend to just present mass storage, its pretty trivial from there
So basically dump the cartridge temporarily for a placebo effect for people who want to use real cartridges all the time for some reason?
being able to quickly sync saves between mister and a real cart might have actual utility for some people
Wow good job Mark Johnson
Thank you
I was way behind on this channel wow lol
Basically what that polymega does
Also wonder if Sanni's cart reader would be compatible with this. It's primarily meant to be a standalone device but it does have USB and can be controlled with it. Supports a lot more cartridges than just gameboy
ComLynx(Link Cable) Support Added
Tested between two MiSTers with a GB-Link Cable. Untested with a real Lynx.
Supported Games: https://atarilynxdeveloper.wordpress.com/2011/05/31/come-lynx-with-me/
USER_IO[0] & GND are being used for the cable.
Is this going to be an alternate core or are there plans to merge this into the main Lynx core?
I plan to PR it.
Nice 🙂
if you have any interest do the gba link, I had it partially working with the gba2p code, but had to reverse the sending and receiving of the bits to make it work with real gba. and use the same pinout as GB so we can use the snac board.
Imagine a world where Taki releases a handheld MiSTer and we can play ComLynx multiplayer on 2 handheld MiSTers via a link cable. A man can dream
Well I would expect when Game Bub drops, that I am assuming has some sort of link support, cores will be ported to that, and doing this work here presumably will make it easier to port and support there.
At this point, what handhelds and consoles that had link support, is that not supported/wired up on MiSTer? GBA is the only one I can think of, off hand
There was an experimental Game Gear link support rbf but I’m not sure if it was officially implemented
There’s also IR multiplayer for the Pokemon Mini core that’s not implemented
Ah interesting, yeah those were real
I am remembering TurboGrafx had some form of link support on one of their models
I think Supervision may have, not sure if Kitrinx wired that up
I have a list of obscure handheld link cable games. I can send it to you when I’ve got time
I’m happy for everyone who got a MiSTer Pi and Super Station but I’m over here waiting for decades on the handheld. 😭
Just get an anal boy, Roberto.
That is awesome! I have multiple Lynxes and ComLynx cables. I assume the signals need to be converted from/to 5 volts.
Yeah, use a level shifter and a pull-up to 5V. I'll create an adapter PCB design soon
_ g a m e b u b _
There are also some Neo Geo carts that can be linked between systems.
And playstation serial cable allowed some system to system play on certain games.
Can we link 16 misters together for Faceball?
AtariLynx2P core
Supported games https://atarilynxdeveloper.wordpress.com/2011/05/31/come-lynx-with-me/
You'll need to create a directory in games called AtariLynx2P and copy the Lynx boot.rom into it.
Well that’s out of nowhere lol
Alright, setup my MGLs for all the 2-player games and used symbolic links to eliminate file duplication since its game folder is AtariLynx2P
Works great, the only thing I'd ask for is adding in a little vertical divider line option like in the Gameboy2P core
hopefully that change to allow the single and 2p cores to share games/save directories will come
I just use symbolic links to get that
Saves, at least for the GB2p and GBA2p cores aren't compatible with the single cores, there was talk of fixing this so there wouldn't be a need to
Ohhhhhhhh
Wait, you sure? I could have sworn I extracted my saves from my physical Oracle carts to test the link feature and it worked
yes, you have to extract your saves. they're not directly interchangeable between the cores without manual intervention.
OH, you meant in different locations?
I thought you meant the file format itself was not compatible
If you use your 2P save directly on a 1P core, it will erase the second player save file. The saves themselves are just the save of the standard core from each player bolted onto eachother. This is why they're separated right now, and why there's different folders for everything.
There was a discussion about this in the GBA thread.
Oh, why don't they do like the n64 core and just add a _1 and _2 to the end of the filename?
Great work! Really curious to see how you solved the memory access. This was my number one concern with Lynx as I expected you would need dual sdram unless both cores just run slower.
If not used, In theory that would mean that dualsdram would allow for 4p?
Are the Lynx and GG cores split screen 2 player?
Or is it a case that you can link your hardware with the MiSTer now.
Split 2 player
Like the other 2P cores
Sweet
This confused me
That’s for the regular core, through SNAC?
That's dope too
I will try tonight, it'll be difficult playing 2 players by yourself 😂
It is merged
https://github.com/jotego/jtcores/pull/1346
oh shit oh shit
Sonic seems to work correctly this time.
did you build it already? I'm waiting on the build action
I built it weeks ago but kept my mouth shut until it is merged.
Everyone have a secret or two. 🤭
does saving work in card fighters clash?
I won't remember that game working on the core.
it does, it just doesn't save
Or is it only Match of the Millenium ?
So it doesn't change for the fighting game.
honestly, I'm just impressed that you deciphered JT's build system
I'm not with a MiSTer system right now.
So, it will be your test for today!
Nice, so many of the handhelds are getting 2p cores AND the NGP core is finally getting worked on some more?
Is NGP still the black and white only version that's public?
AFAIK yes
If you play 2P Streets of Rage on the GG core, you can throw your partner and leave one player alone to be thrown.
Video done. Tonight lynx, tomorrow GG.
I played SoR2 in the video
Ah well. It was a thought.
@ornate apex is there any chance of being able to change what is being seen in HDMI as well as over analog signal? In the previous 2P cores, there was a way to have the HDMI side show one signal, while the analog showed a different one. Right now, on the AtariLynx core, both screens are there, they're just very teeny so things are hard to see. GameGear core makes my CRT roll, but that's a ymmv situation.
There is a chance, I'm not sure if I'll be able to help with that. Both my MiSTers are Dual-Ram, and I don't have access to a CRT.
If you need any help testing that out, I have my CRT standing by.
Aquí hay más juegos soportados: https://www.mygamer.com/sega-game-gear-master-list-of-gear-to-gear-link-cable-supported-games/
This is very cool!!! Does it work on single sdram? And: will it support 4p at some point? 🙂 Is that likely from a technical pov?
Also, I have a general question about the handheld cores; I might be the odd one out, but I would like to be able to force scale these DOWN, so they are NOT fullscreen, but smaller. They were ment for smaller screens and I was wondering if there currently is a way to force these to use a smaller (integer) scale. Is something like this built-in to mister, or is this something that would need to be added per-core?
I'm playing on a 20" 4:3 monitor, for reference. So playing GB or Lynx games makes them HUGE compared to their OG screens
JT isn't doing a release today, but this is the NGPC core with saving working (you need to be a patreon to use it)
Removed unused options and fixed some games that wouldn't connect.
Needs to be checked.
I saw a regression on Neo Turf Masters earlier this morning.
With the sound getting stuck and freezing after some time.
I’m sorry? “Neo Turf Masters”? Sir, this is a card game
the image is shifted for two lines at the bottom
But, you guys, it saves the game
yes we could save bugs now 🤣

very cool!
Metal Slug 1 saves work but I having this issue during playing MS1.
That's my classic line at work.
@wary fjord I quickly tested the new G&W core.
#test-builds message
And I've found an issue with the resolution + frequency.
The newest version is running at 360X240 @60.1Hz instead of 720X720 @59.4Hz.
That gives the artworks a low quality quality too when rendering.
Yeah, someone else reported that. I was testing in direct video like a fool, so that is my bad
Yup, reported the exact same thing 🙂 I did notice an improvement though, the OG version for me had no sound with the Tiger Electronic games (on my analog audio output), whilst the new one does. Unf, unlike when I play Mario Bros on the GnW core, I get no sound (at least not on analog out, not tried HDMI audio) on either the new or the old GameAndWatch cores.
Althought for me, I believe it was @15khz instead of the 60 you report. Will check that tomorrow
I was trying to get it to work on CRTs and I futzed with on the wrong side of the scaler
This one works again on 720x720 for me! Still no sound on mario bros though, but that was never there yet on this core - only on the GnW one.
Graphics are OK for me, but no sound at all anymore on several games tested (Mario Ball, Donkey Kong, Parachute) on that new version.
HDMI connection.
Before I file a bug, can anyone doublecheck if the latest GB core from #unstable-nightlies message has issues running 3-d Ultra Pinball - Thrillride (USA) ?
For me it boots, but when it gets to the menu, the graphics are corrupted (Can't see the menu). My rom works fine in the current main release of the GB(C) core.
Seeing the issue on the latest unstable here too, it's working fine on the stable core
I confirm too.
Bug filed
I now have sound on analog output! Both for Mario Bros and for Golden Axe . I did not have to add the snippet to my config file, still have 720x720 output. Protip: there is a great Game & Watch video preset that makes everything look amazingly crips
Thank you very much!
Sorry about the bugs, friends. Sound was wired wrong for game and watch games. The few I tested had sound
I think there is still missing sound in a couple of games, but that should match the original core
I made that preset!!!!
Lovin' it!
Gonna grab lunch and some walk around town time with the fam. If no one has any issues with this version of the core, we will get it in MiSTer-devel later today, and it will be in update all this evening
I tried 12 G&W games and everything seems alright on my end, except Super Mario Bros (Crystal screen).
But I wasn't working either on the previous version (maybe the processor is missing).
It would be good to document what is and isn't supported in this core, I didn't find a comprehensive list anywhere, but I know it doesn't support all the G&W games as it doesn't cover all the CPUs, but it does play a lot of Tiger handhelds
i get a check cartridge error on Sonic Drift 2 when starting a race
the vs menu screen loads fine but then fails as the track is about to load. it will usually appear briefly on the 2nd GG
Same cartridge error with Sonic Drift 1
The first game I tested was Mortal Kombat, and bizarelly in that one (unless my setup is very messed up) controller 1 seemed to always be controlling both screens, though it did define left as kombatant 1, right screen as player 2.
I seem to be able to use 2 controllers to navigate the menus in Sonic Drift at least, so guessing that is some seperate issue?
Is there a way to convert mgw into gnw? The Game and Watch games I have are in mgw format...
a little friday treat for you
now with RTC? Kinda
Oh, neat, is this an unstable?
it's just a test build
That's cool. I wish they also made a digimon core though. Digimon is better than Tamagotchi imo.
Not sure what happened today with the Game & Watch update: there was an update that came through with update_all (which was apparently from the 10th already, I just updated today), but now I have 2 versions installed. One from 2023, and the new one from the 10th. Anyone else seeing the same? I don't remember manually messing with this. Rerunning update_all did not resolve it
It’s because one came from update all and another came from agg’s repo. You can disable that repo and delete the old core. Updates will come via update all
aren't there other things I will loose from disabling agg's repo?
I noticed there was an update on the Neo Geo Pocket core, still seems broken to me though
Mine won't load any games now. Just stuck at the pocket menu even after resetting, thats how I loaded games before.
Not anymore
Same. Can't get any games to load anymore on the NGP core.
Also seem to have to go through the settings process every time the core is booted, which I had hoped wouldn't be the case anymore with the save support.
Okay, I figured out how to consistently load a game. Boot up the core. Go into the core's OSD menu and reset. Then load a game, which will take you to the settings process. Finish the settings process and the game will load.
Is there a hacked bios or something that skips the setting process? Having to go through that every single time is such a pain.
wow that issue still isn’t fixed? I think the core has been that way since it dropped…unless it was fixed and this is a regression
No that sounds about how it always was
There is, I'll see if I can find it. There was a very brief mention over on JT's discord ages about
I thought I had it, but I cannot find it
Would be great if it could be added to the bios database for the core since it seems that settings issue is here to stay for the long term.
I've got a patched copy of the ROMs, but I actually want to find that patch since I think it'd be more useful for everyone
Found them @solar iron (fairly sure ips files are ok so share here right?)
NeoGeo Pocket
Tired of the settings menu? Moved to NeoGeo Pocket color only to get tired of the color menu? Well, angel_killah has developed two patches that you can apply to your NGP/NGPC firmware in order to bypass it. All merit goes to him. It is going to be instrumental to finish debugging the last couple of bugs as it saves me a ton of time too. Find the IPS files attached. Thank you, angel_killah!
yes, this is totally fine - thanks duder
where is it supposed to live? I can't remember
There was these two other patches later in the thread. I think these ones set the language to english where is the first two was japanese
oh it's boot.rom in the neogeopocket directory
Yeah
Would be good to get it integrated somehow into the bios db or the mra but JT pretty much said that people had to manually patch it themselves 🤷♂️
Nice, works like a charm! Still have to do the whole "reset" > "load game" for a game to load, but it's way better.
Now if only there was a way to have the core automatically run the reset function when it boots up, we'd be golden.
The Analogue Pocket version used to load straight into the game. Something broke with this latest release and it doesn't load any game, it just goes to the boot screen 🫠
That core feels like the Duke Nukem Forever of mister cores
I found out something extremely interesting while converting the plain text of the pokedex in pokemon red to metric to match the metric height/weight units.
In the Japanese version it's stated that it digs at 100km/h and causes earthquakes by doing this. This is mistranslated as digging 100km deep and adjusted to 60miles, which is roughly correct. But then the German version translated the English text correctly but converted the 60 miles incorrectly by dividing by 1.6 instead of multiplying.
I choose to keep the 40km from the German translation because I think it's very funny!
☑️
Just noticed that the hacked bios is always defaulting to Japanese language, so now all the games are running in Japanese. 😅
Is the NGP boot.rom in the BIOS DB working as desired?
did you use the 2nd patch
(also, try the one in the bios db)
Hmm, doesn't seem to be downloading from the bios db. Removed the bios files from the folder and still not downloading it. First time that's ever happened for me.
add
file_checking = 'exhaustive'``` to the top of your downloader.ini
Okay, it downloaded the bios after doing that, but applying the patch, it still only boots the games in Japanese.
Only way for me to boot the games in english is to use the unpatched bios and go through the settings process.
hrm
Ah, nephew just dropped in, so gotta go for awhile. I'll check back later!
Dunno why the updater dosen't download the new bios if you delete the old files unless you set it to a more strict file checking mode
I have that issue all the time "Hey, these boot files were not downloaded because you have a different version, delete them to update them"
deletes them
runs update_all again
Aaaaaand nothing, it just... does not give the message OR redownload them
This second patch set should have been the English one: #1046941428758102086 message
The default behavior is balanced: "Check file presences when there are database changes or the free space in the storages have increased noticeably (2mb)"
I ended up redownloading it via the bios database, and for some reason that one has the settings skip without the patch now? Did we swap out the old bios in the database with a prepatched one? Either way, that one actually boots the games in english.
Yes, that's what I usually have it set to, and it never redownloads them like that
Honestly I think anyone who hangs out here in this discord daily should just leave it set to exhaustive
That would make every update take forever, also would be hard to ser what was downloaded in that mess
No it doesn't
Verify integrity takes forever. Exhaustive should be the default
It kinda annoyed me that the insert coin script deleted neogeo pocket as an unwanted core. Can't say I disagree with its logic now
What insert coin script
That’s interesting, thanks didn’t know
It's cool if you like using nightlies..it keeps cores updated to the latest nightlies plus downloads some other arcade core not in update all yet.
The feature I use the most is the newest folder in arcade. It has a long list of the most recent arcade core from newest to oldest
how do you setup the newest folder?
do i need a bios file for gb/gbc/gba games?
i see i have boot.rom for gba, but im wondering if i need bios files for the other handhelds i mentioned too
lol nevermind, update_all grabbed it this time lol
does it confuse it for an arcade core for some reason?
Fixes most, if not all, games that weren't working in the previous build.
will be able to test later today
paulb-nl is really a machine.
I wonder if they help 3-d pinball game
Yes, that's fixed.
he fixes more than dma tests 🙂
Got my Superstation the other day and was going thru and testing cores to make sure everything was the same, and I seem to be having an issue with the Lynx core.
It looks fine on HDMI but on CRT the image is tiny and in the corner. Using VGA to Component, on the most recent core from Update All. All worked fine on my regular MiSTer, and every other core I've tried seems to be good.
Wondering if anyone has any idea on the issue/solution to this.
There is no solution, unfortanately. That is how the lynx core appears on CRTs
Oh, so maybe I just ran it on HDMI before? I don't remember, haha. Thank you for the answer tho.
There is a 240p mode that upscales it on CRT
I read it from the lcd with a mister hooked up to both.
and fumble around on the one that isn't hooked to lcd
Oh yeah, it's right there, don't know how I missed it, that's what I was looking for, thanks
yes 240p mode is there for CRTs. It just doubles all pixels in both directions. This works due to the low resolution of the lynx.
@torn jay since it got buried really quickly in the gba thread: I noticed the game lego bionicle (usa) not having sound when played on the stock core but working normally on the accuracy core.
Don't confuse "bionicle" and "lego bionicle", those are 2 separate games.
I remember that i heard issues about this game before, maybe it was in the forums?
If the accuracy core works, it's very likely some timing edge case, as that is the main difference.
Audio path is otherwise unchanged
Would be another reason for the accuracy core, but currently it's on ice due to other work
No problem, just wanted to tell you before I forget it again. 👍
i played a round of sonic drift ! neat
