#System is hanging on configuration when booting
351 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
And it displayed [5.918436]
And nothing else first boot
Im reading this is my motherboard displaying hardware issues?
if you have some weird usb device unplug it
Does that sound correct
scanner/ fingerprint reader/ draw pen etc
Theres only a keyboard and mouse plugged into my pc but ill unplug everything and test
It displays 5.886614 now
No just the black and those numbers in brackets
what linux distro are you attempting to boot?
Its pop
do you get a grub menu at start?
No
I begins config, lines of code begin and then my display changes to a greyish screen and this it clicks back to this stuff
shut down fully. replug your keybd and mouse.
then follow this. do what it says once you see grub menu to boot other kernels or kernel in recovery mode:

Okay i have the grub, pop os, pop os recovery abd reboot into firmware interface
So far so good
Recovery mode booted fine
ok
did you happen to upgrade a linux kernel yesterday?
at some point after installing Pop OS?
Yes
that might be why
Or during its kind of a blur. I think i updated kernel to get it to install
did u see a "advanced options for Pop OS" in grub?
I saw pop, pop recovery and firmware. Only those 3 on grub
and did Pop recovery show any options ?
No, it just booted me in once clicked
ok open terminal a sec
do uname -r
and state it
then do whereis synaptic and does it show paths?
Hold a moment, kids
Back
Okay im going to attempt screenshots but popos built in screenshot crap freezes my system
ok
do sudo apt update && sudo apt install synaptic
i still have a hard time realizing when its my turn in the terminal
hit win key, and type syna
once it launches, maximize window
read the intro thoroughly too
if u see a prompt. it is done
the recover@recovery prompt?
im looking for the synapse package manager?
*synaptic
things regarding apt can all be done thru the terminal, but one has to know many commands and switches to get exact details, synaptic makes the process much more easy
the intro that would have popped up as soon as you launched that
ok u see that horizontal divider line near middle?
ye
drag it down more, so the results occupy 2 thirds vertical
alright
go to Settings menu in there. Preferences> show package details in main window
tick that on
then near left bottom, click Status
above that, click "Installed"
then scroll the results list (it's fully alphabetized) til you get to any and all "linux-image ...." ones and show
one moment please
in terminal, unmaximize it, cuz the fonts are so tiny in max mode. do uname -a and show
in this window, can you stretch the header divider at the top , toward the right, so it shows the full names of packages please?
and reshow
the tiny line between "package" and "installed version" drag it to right
no problem
lovely, ty
well, there's nothing there else but what is already being run, as per uname (your current running kernel)
the little yellow star on the green i think means upgradable (see Help menu> icon legend)
correct
I would say try to reboot again. dont touch any key and see if it just works, but before you do that... show result of inxi -Gxxx && mokutil --sb-state
just install it
okay
once installed, just hit the up arrow key twice n repeat the longer command
lol right
hit ctrl-c
let's do it in synaptic cuz it's open
click 'search' in the top right
inxi
find it exactly in the results, and mark for installation, and apply
alright inxi done
up a few times
one moment. while you wait, please look at the list of all installed packages as you were before in synaptic
status> installed
and notice the status bar at very bottom left
and look thru the icon legend well
are these essential things or everything on my system
i have quite a few that can update. should i?
strictly native apps, libraries, modules, kernel(s) etc
i was gonna say update but first, TRY REBOOT. without any recov mode
okay brb
just in case it was just a mild onetime glitch
dang.
Do i have to revert the kernel?
ok reboot with recov as before
there's no other kernel as far as I saw in the synaptic results
how ever, i do recommend to try running it again, click the "mark all upgrades" button in synaptic toolbar
Alright ill do that and restart
then definitely read over what it proposes to do when you click Apply. (pop-out the side arrows for info in the "to be ____")
Was a command we did make synaptic able to be searched. I dont see it now
?
just find it in ur start menu grid
unless for some reason it didnt save in recov mode
in terminal: whereis synaptic
any progress @tame kiln ?
sudo apt update && apt list --upgradable
you did a proper safe reboot using the UI of Pop right?
yea same as last time
seems it didnt retain synaptic
process is finished, will a fresh install fix this you think?
which i have no idea
results?
you will note the linux image 6.12 line
try a full update then reboot.
sudo apt upgrade
it likely is the recovery mode
i guess Pop has like a built-in live CD
that's why it didn't retain synaptic on reboot
so idk what to tell ya
fresh install?
im fine with that its worth a try i suppose
dont forget u may need the boot repair tool again
which if u have the mint ISO on ventoy, u may run it from that if pop wont boot upon reinstall
i had to erase the ventroy because popos installer wouldnt work off it
ah
then just get it again from online in the live desktop by adding that PPA as u did yesterday
refer to yesterday's ticket
only if it wont boot, anyway
and if you get a new install going, do a timeshift backup right away
before messing with anything at all.
@tame kiln
Heard
if Pop OS becomes a headache. just get Tuxedo OS. I think it comes with an option for nvidia also.
It has a reinstall option, should i just not even risk it and just fresh.
Honestly pop worked great for the gaming but my UI was snappier and less buggy on mint.
reinstall option should be fine
Reinstall failed, possibly due to hardware
All my stuff is pretty new i doubt i have hardware issues. And yea im on live from usb
see in start menu if Disks app is included
It is
and show a photo of it with the target SSD showing
wow
click the next rectangle 1 gigabyte FAT
does it say EFI system in the text below?
looks like i was right
p2 is a whole recov. "CD"
go to dots menu in disks app
ok
then install POP
youre going to be so upset
.
idc
Just that a whole gig for EFI is kinda dumb n wasteful
100 Megs would do, and even then, only one-third gets used
Reinstall seems to have worked.
Im really going yo have the setup phase of linux down packed at this rate
Thanks again for rescuing me stunner.
I still dont really understand what caused this
Besides the gnome magic in my tower
do timeshift save rn immediately
also, this was fun: #1377377077388509204 message
Installing timeshift it doesnt come included
sheesh
install synaptic too. it's a good tool
and inxi,
then timeshift snapshot.
Yea this is a game changer and has helped way more than i expected
Unrelated while i install this stuff. Does mint come with this ubuntu pro link? I didnt see it
no it doesnt
some seriously good info I left you in this ticket
The grub command sudo xed /etc/default/grub doesnt work
u can use gedit
Whats that stand for?
or install xed and remove gedit
or install mousepad
gedit is gnome's crappy text editor
sudo mousepad /etc/default/grub 😛
nano also works but it's .. TUI
Leta do xed, the gedit came up blank and theres none of the grub menu config lines
idk if xed is only in mint repos. try
Mousepad also didnt work
This is what i dont like. I feel like im on a mac
sudo nano /etc/default/grub
fyi, you'd actually have to install mousepad for it to work
okay
any progress?
is grub for the UI? because i know popos moved to cosmic rust desktop
no grub is bootloader
or idk how u entered recovery mode last time.
maybe it's systemd boot
with esc
shift doesnt work for me
btu it wasnt the same grub menu i saw displayed by mint
no i didnt see that at all
and the titlebar at top
it was 3 options in the center of my screen
anyway, did u get those couple packages i said, then did timeshift snapshot?
all done
thanks again and again for the future. oddly enough these issues have made me like linux more not less. ive never had to feel stressed about problems that pop up so far because its fixable if that makes sense
you got inxi, synaptic, mousepad?
not mousepad
yea
if u think it looks like shit with those ugly header bars and cryptic 3line menus, replace it with mousepad
'mark for removal' and always read the final proposed summary of what it wants to do
if u see it proposes that removing gedit will remove gnome-shell or gnome-desktop, then of course cancel
the key to not totally fugging ur system is always read what synaptic or apt on CLI proposes to do before giving the final ok
when its asking you to type y or n
y is usually capitalized so hitting enter will proceed. if u dont agree, press n, then enter
or ctrl-c to cancel on CLI
I personally prefer synaptic cuz I feel it presents things more clearly
then u got Pop shop for other glammy stuff, but u can also view screenshots in synaptic if they exist for a particular package
is there anything on the app stores you recommend always having besides synaptic
hmm
i dont really get too much
ive been messing around with obsidian and bitwarden thats it
well, u got Disks app, that's good. psensor is good for graphing ur cpu or temperatures, or gpu activity
the Resources flatpak app is also very good for monitoring GPUs
hardinfo is a nice graphical tool for seeing all your devices and key info on them and the OS
psensors just what i was looking for yesterday
Nomacs is a wonderful picture viewer/editor/slideshow app
idk what pop gives.. does it include gthumb?
the equivalent to Pix app on mint.
Clementine and/or Audacious for great music player. especially Clementine if u have a huge music collection and want a nice library finder for songs/albums
its just called image viewer
the Kasts flatpak app if u like being able to listen to podcasts from virtually anywhere /source
in terminal type whereis gthumb
any path results? if so, then it's installed
no path
yea
in term. xprop then click the viewer
then look at WM CLASS STRING in the result
that tells u precisely the name of the executable/ program
is that dangerous?
you can look it in synaptic
LOTR joke
it tells u all about it. turn the details thing on again
prefs> show package details in main window
when u search simply "eog" u can put the search to by name only to narrow it
so wait, theres gedit which is gnomes txt editor and eog which is their image viewer?
isn't it apparent?
well im more just trying to understand the ecosystem of things
hell, even the disks app is called gnome-disk-utility
you can find out program names using the xprop thing
or going into their 3line/ Help menu> About
its less identifying it as gnome and more me understand this is a suite of programs from a company
^ nomacs
i got nomacs
it's cool its Panels thing
simply alt-P, then M while viewing an image
u get a nice ribbon
which u can edit what it shows by clicking the ribbon's left secret spot
to show deets like photograph exif date, camera model, etc etc
is this on windows? i think ive used nomacs before
yea, i think i used to use this with krita
shift T shows a whole thumbnail gallery of the current folder if images are present
idk if it is cross platform authored
you can also swipe images with the mouse drag
or just use left-right arrows or arrow cursor keys
i gotta cook now, but thanks again stunner. the system monitoring apps i was looking for good ones all yesterday
have a good one
i'd say do another timeshift after testing reboot
okay
yep shows cpu too
