I've been trying to install mint on a USB, and got it to install on 2 seperate USBs, then finding out that i need to use one to boot and the other to install. I now get import_mok_state failed not found apon booting either or. Oddly, BalenaEtcher wont detect my iso anymore aswell so i have resorted to using rufus. I have formatted and removed all of the partitions from the USBs multiple times. I cannot disable secure boot because the option is grayed out in my ASUS laptop's BIOS; although this shouldnt be an issue as I used to be able to boot on the same PC with the same USBs.

use ventoy with its secure boot support enabled (default setting)
which one?
note, installing onto another usb for daily usage isnt recommended. will break the usb stick over a few weeks if used a lot
alright, and installing mint through etcher or rufus should work fine now?
see also #1200928716415566005 message for secure boot steps later
u dont need them

my installation USB is quite slow, thanks for your support. I'll get back to you if it works or not.
use the DISKS app so u sort out and fully understand which disk is which BEFORE u run the installer icon on the desktop
it's in the start menu in 'Accessories' once u live-boot Mint to desktop
thank you
tbh u should take the windows disk out
so the bootloader doesnt automatically end up on that (and it will)
@sage wigeon
taking the windows disk out isnt really an option
dang
which isnt hard, i'll show u the pic
thanks
so example: ur ventoy'd USB (the installer disk) we'll call USB1
the target to install onto, we'll call USB-2
in DISKS app sort out which is which. (USB2 identify it by size or brand) and it may have a name like sdc perhaps
it boots
if you don't mind me asking and you by chance know, how come Ventoy works but etcher and Rufus didn't?
it's just better, especially if u put it to GPT as my pic showed
Manual example:
in the example above, the target disk happens to be sda. replace with ur target
note the red text precisely
use the + sign to make new partitions from raw space
use the "change" button to set parameters, such as the first partition must be set to be "EFI system partition"
and the second asterisk shown for the main linux.
Again, make sure to run the DISKS app and learn ur disk dev names so u dont F up hardcore.
@sage wigeon ^
make sure those 3 red asterisked items are set accurately n ur good to go.
dont need the home or swap things there
alr ty
my 2nd larger USB where I want to put the OS has mint installed in it, should I format it before installing?
ah
u may want to make a new partition TABLE first
u can pick the right disk and pick the new partition table button in the installer n make it GPT
then after hit the + to make the two things, EFI, and main
note: that new partition table button will wipe the disk so make sure u highlighted the correct dev name
if you don't mind me asking what does the table do?
erases all file structure on the drive
alr
and GPT is the new standard for newish computers that run UEFI
(GUID Partition Table)
in the change window should I change the use as to something else or is Ext4 good?
yeah as shown
seems good, I'll install
the EFI partition must be marked 'use as : EFI sys.ptn' and only needs be around 100 MB
and the bottom dropdown with red text is absolutely vital to follow
it worked, I'll be closing the thread
