Starting December 1, Discord will begin using a new custom font, gg sans, across all of its surfaces. This change will give Discord the flexibility to customize our font going forward so that we can continuously provide our users with the best experience on Discord. The mobile and desktop apps, our website, and our Developer Portal will all use the new custom font.

While the vertical height of our font is changing to accommodate better internationalization, alignment will not be changed, so your apps should not be impacted. No action is required on your part.

Discord will be on a company-wide break starting tomorrow 12/23 until 1/3.

Because of this, staff will be unavailable and there will be delays with developer support tickets. During break, we'll ease the server cap for bots that apply for verification to 250 servers instead of the typical 100 so that apps can continue growing.

To ensure mods also have time to spend with their families, DDevs will be more restricted than normal (including higher slowtimes and longer timeouts). Additionally, you should expect delays with any ModMail submitted during this time.

We appreciate your patience and understanding, and wish you all a very happy holidays. See you in 2023~ 🪩 snow_globe

Discord Devs, you rocked it! wumpus_party We received hundreds of entries, which gave our set of judges plenty to think about as they reviewed every one of them. Let’s take a look at the finalists for our 2023 App Pitches program for each category:

🎨 Apps for Artists: Art Arena: The ultimate artist battleground, Art Arena is pitched as a way for artists to come together and show off what they’re made of! The devs behind Art Arena plan to build out a thriving platform where users can create portfolios to showcase their work, enter themed competitions, and even let prospective employers know they’re open for work.
🪸 IRL Impact: Coral Reef Cam: The Coral Reef Cam is a family-built, mother/daughter project with big ambition: their team will work to set up a camera off the coast of Belize, offering both underwater and island views. Information pulled from the cameras will monitor ocean characteristics, such as the sea surface temperature, and deliver it to their app. The app will then share this information with instructors and students at Colorado Academy for analysis.
🧑‍💻 Learning: Teranga: The team behind Teranga wants to be there to support you on your road to Discord Development. Their app pitch is a no-code, drag-and-drop editor that gives you the pieces to put together an app for Discord that does what you want, made by you.
🏙️ Mini-Games: Towntopia: Towntopia is pitched to be the go-to city-building app to add to your server. Visually represent your own Discord server as a town map, build a home within it, or start a company within it! Anyone in your server can join as a citizen, while the community owner naturally becomes Mayor.

<@&1130577467082539079>, Discord App Pitches is making a return! This year, we’re looking for both Discord App Developers and Game Developers to pitch their ideas.

ship_it What’s new for our App Pitches this year? A whole lot, actually!

We have some new submission categories, designed to show off what’s possible with our new Embedded App SDK.
Alongside five category winners, one entry will be deemed the Grand Prize winner this time, earning up to $30,000 USD!
Since this year’s Discord App Pitches involves creating games or experiences that users enjoy inside Discord, a prototype will be required when submitting your pitch. But don’t worry - you have over a month to start building before submissions close!
Power to the people: we’ll have a User Voting period of Discord App Pitches this year! Make your voice heard by joining Town Hall to play and vote for your favorite pitch when the time comes in June!

🌟 Embedded App SDK

The Embedded App SDK, currently available as a developer preview, lets you build Activities like the ones you know and love today.
Activities are really just websites embedded into an iframe. They can be used with almost any kind of web-based experience.
The Embedded App SDK handles all iframe communication with the Discord client including voice and chat integration, built-in Discord user identity, and rich presence integration. Native monetization support is coming soon!

🚀 Best practices when building an Activity

Prioritize access for the whole group
Give users something to interact with, even if they’re alone
Help users gather their friends
Allow for mid-game joins and departure
Build games that are easy to learn, hard to master
Use Discord personalization

💫 User-Installed Apps

User-installed apps, currently available as a developer preview, makes apps more accessible across Discord.
Available in DMs, Group DMs, and servers (during the developer preview, your app might not respond publicly in large servers)
All users can install apps
Improved discovery for apps
To make a user-installable app, configure your app in the developer portal, register your commands, then implement your commands. There are two new fields to configure when registering a command: integration_types and contexts.

📣 I have a bittersweet announcement to share: Monday, June 3 is my last day at Discord.

Upcoming Discord Holiday Break

Discord will be on a company-wide break from December 20 - January 2. Please expect delays with developer support tickets and intent requests during this time. The Buildathon will still be running during this time and we'll continue to have Monday check-ins!

Temporary Server Changes

This server will also be more restricted than usual to make sure mods can take time off and enjoy the holidays 🙂

🔧 Dev Help 🔧

Earlier today we accidentally deleted the original #1478857869960019968 channel while closing a post. We aren't able to recover anything from it so we have remade it. I understand the massive amount of context we lost in this deletion. This was 10000% an accident as we were trying to close a help thread out. As part of this we removed permission to manage channels from our staff role to prevent accidents like this in the future. Super sorry to have made this mistake, please help us in rebuilding the channel and answering questions from developers.

Hey everyone, wanted to make a quick note about the questions around discord-rpc that popped up in the last couple days. Discord-rpc was deprecated almost six months ago, but we don't want people feeling like they're out in the cold. At the same time, it is deprecated, so we cannot support integration help questions about it here. As a rule of thumb:

Questions about discord-rpc like "Hey, I want to implement it, how do I do this specific integration work" are not supported here, as they are about integration work around discord-rpc.

Questions like "Hey, I saw the deprecation notice, I was using it for X, will the GameSDK handle that" are fine, as they are questions about integrating the GameSDK, with RPC as a reference point.

If you have questions about this distinction, feel free to poke moderators or admins here for clarity. This place is still pretty new, so we want to work with you all to make sure that it's a great place to get help, and is helping people with the right things. Much appreciate blobpenguinheart

This version of the SDK should be IL2CPP-compatible for Unity. It is not currently listed on the documentation. I would ask that those of you looking for IL2CPP support try out this new version and let me know if there are any issues that arise before we promote to everyone.

Hi everyone—I have some unfortunate news. Due to the unforeseen circumstances of all the craziness going on in the world right now and the impact that it is having on our team, we are currently unable to process submissions for game approval and sale. We do not say this lightly, and I personally deeply apologize for the issues it may cause you.

We will re-assess when things get back to normal, but we don't have an ETA on when that could be. So, if you have imminent release of your game scheduled, we ask that you make preparations to do so on other platforms.

You are still more than welcome to use the tools currently at your disposal, including beta testing channels, the GameSDK (you can ship it on other platforms, just remember Discord has to be installed and the user logged in!), and the other tools that comprise Server Commerce.

If you currently have a game in queue for approval, you'll be getting an email from us. If you have questions, please reach out to the dev support team at https://dis.gd/devsupport if you have any questions.

Hey everyone! I have some exciting news to share with you all today. We're super proud of how great this server has been for people looking to get help with Dispatch and our GameSDK. You've all been vital to that success; we couldn't ask for a more helpful community.

We want to bring some of that love and helpfulness to our broader developer community who interact with our API as a whole. So, starting today, we'll be rebranding this server a little bit as the official "Discord Developers" server. Our URL has been updated to discord.gg/discord-developers as well! You'll see that the existing category has been renamed to "GameSDK and Dispatch", and a new one has been created for "API and Bots". We'll also be splitting our announcements between a few channels here. This announcement channel will be more focused on server-related stuff. We've made a new announcement channel specifically for the GameSDK and Dispatch, and for our API. Feel free to follow them all!

Bear with us as channels and things may shuffle around in the coming few days as we get everything just so. We'll do our best to keep things neat and organized. New people joining the server receive three roles that make each "set" of channels read-only. You'll need to react with the role that you want to remove from yourself to talk in those channels.

Update: How to Contact Discord's Support Team Going Forward

By EOD today (16 July 2020), we will be removing the short link and category for the Game Developer support queue (dis.gd/devsupport). If you need to reach out to the team for more help, you can still do so by submitting your questions to dis.gd/contact.

This is not because we are discontinuing support for game developers. Our team is working on cleaning up some of the internal processes/procedures and removing this specific category will lead to improved support for you all by our amazing team! hapbug

Regarding Gift Code Generation for Unapproved Titles

Starting today, we are beginning to take action on users who are manipulating our server commerce tools to generate spam. This spam takes the form of providing gift codes for unapproved games in exchange for payment, as a form of invite rewards, or other goods and services. These codes are typically generated via purpose-built bots designed to generate and distribute the gift codes in question.

We want to be clear: distributing games using bots that generate gift codes en masse, and rewarding invite linking or payment with codes to games that are not approved for commerce, is a violation of our Terms of Service. Using gift codes or game store links as server invites or server advertisements is also a violation of our terms. Bulk distribution of gift codes for unapproved games in any manner is not permitted, and the fraudulent generation or distribution of gift codes for an unapproved title may result in account action.

This does mean that we are investigating any unapproved title that generates gift codes in bulk. Developers working on games which are not approved for commerce can continue to use gift code generation to distribute their beta titles for testing to a reasonable degree. You can also create store pages for your games in a server and gate access to those pages to certain roles, regardless of your game's approval status. That said, charging users to play games which are unapproved for commerce, or asking them to perform tasks in exchange for your unapproved game as a reward, is absolutely not permitted in any sense.

Partnership is being shifted to reward active and engaged servers with recognition and extra tools to help them invest in their communities.
This means you do not have to be a popular content creator on another platform to become a Partnered server. For the folks in this server, if you're a bot or software developer who invests deeply in building an engaged and creative Discord community, you might qualify too!

Hello friends! Time for a small update on your friendly neighborhood developer support droids!

I'm going to be out of the office from September 18th to September 28th to facilitate a cross country move. I will be back at work on September 29th. Here's the highlights:

We'll still be verifying bots. Waterloo and BobaKitty will be handling verifications while I'm out. Neither of them are in this server, though if either of them decides to check in I'll be sure to have them let you know they're around.
If you're waiting for a reply from Rabbit Tank, you'll almost certainly hear back by the end of the day today, as it's my goal to clear my opens before I take off for my move. If I don't get through everyone, I'll likely check in briefly next week just to clear out the rest of those open replies.
I won't be available to reply to pings during the week that I'm off. I plan to catch up on pings once I'm back, but in the meantime, our moderation staff should be able to help with most of your serverside needs.
A cross-country move for me means some changes for our dev support hours. Our official "hours of business" remain 9 AM - 6 PM PDT on Monday-Friday, but as of September 29th, we'll have hands in the verification queue from as early as 6 AM PDT to as late as 7 PM PDT, so you may see us reply to emails and pings or verify your bot during that larger span of time. This also means you're less likely to see me reply to pings after 3 PM PDT once I'm back.

That should cover everything! Thanks again for all your continued patience with us as we get more of your bots verified, and I'll see you all real soon.

Hey everyone!

In the spirit of continued experiments, we're gonna be trying something new starting today! @past lodge has made a super cool AI-powered automod that can help answer some of the common questions that come up in #app-verification . Today we're going to be turning it on and letting it try to help us out.

It works like this: when someone asks a question, if the AI has confidence in an answer, it will answer the question in chat. It also lets the person who asked say whether or not the answer was helpful by reacting with greencheck or redcross .

Reacting with greencheck will delete the bot message and the question, and let the bot know it was a good answer.
Reacting with redcross will just delete the bot message and let the bot know the answer is unhelpful.

The questions in #752276352937230418 will still work until we gain more confidence in the AI, and if we don't like it, we have a killswitch to turn it off. It'll be turning on within the next hour or so, so expect to start saying hi to our new robot friend 🙂

To send questions in, simply head to the https://dis.gd/contact and select the Bot & API Developer Support option. There's a few categories on offer, including:

Happy Holidays friends! With Christmas and New Years on the horizon, our developer support team will be on holiday break from Thursday, December 24th to Monday, January 11th. Here's what that means for our dev support offerings.

⛄ Bot Verification

Those who need to verify their bots during this period will still be able to verify their ID, but will not be able to complete the process in full due to the holiday break. Once you verify your ID, you will receive a new server cap of 250 servers and an error message explaining that we're on holiday break. Please come back to finish the verification process on January 11th!

🎄 Privileged Intent Requests

We will be unable to review privileged intent requests during the holiday break, including previous submissions that are still waiting in the queue. For those who are currently waiting, if you do not hear back by 7:00 PM PST on Wednesday, December 23rd, you will not hear back until Monday, January 11th at earliest.

Any new submissions will receive a holiday break warning and your ticket will be closed. You can reopen your ticket if you wish, but you won't hear back until January 11th at absolute earliest. We recommend holding off on intent requests until January 11th.

santaWump Other Developer Support Needs

As with intent approvals, we won't be able to respond to any Developer Support inquiries submitted via the Bot & API Developer Support form at https://dis.gd/contact until January 11th. Those submitting a ticket will receive the same warning, and their ticket will be closed. Those waiting for existing developer support inquiries as of 7:00 PM PST on December 23rd won't hear back until January 11th at earliest.

⚒️ Hack Week Support Hours ⚒️

Hey folks, it's Hack Week! This means all of Discord is going on a bit of a work freeze to work on cool passion projects and random ideas that may or may not ever ship, and hopefully we'll be able to present some really cool stuff to you in the future!

In the meantime, this will impact our support availability. We are not shutting down the verification or intent request queues during this week like we would during a holiday week, though anyone writing in for support will receive a notice informing them that our support availability will be minimal through September 7th, and that reply times will likely be delayed as a result.

This does mean that if you submitted your bot for verification last week or this week, you may not hear back until September 7th, though we're going to be around a little bit to answer questions in the server if they appear, and you can always ping a staff member for an urgent or critical concern.

And, don't hesitate to take this opportunity to make and break cool stuff on your own end! If you make something cool during Hack Week, let us know, we want to see what you're up to!

We're excited to share an override showcasing the new version of our chat input (also known as Slate v2). It's been a very long time in the making, but we're now at the point that we'd like to open it up and see what you all think.

This upgrade is a rework of many parts of the chat input. If all goes well, you won't even notice most of the changes, but they'll allow us to add a bunch of planned additions and improvements to the editor in the future.

We're also including the first plugin to build off of these changes - the new slash command experience! We've heard all your feedback on the current slash command input and this new design is focused on improving the usability/feel of writing slash commands (such as adding better support for copy/paste :D).

Please let us know over in #954490808055255131 all your feature requests, bug reports, and most importantly your feedback - both what you really enjoy, and what parts you feel can be improved further.

Hello everyone - some context for you on a recent discussion that popped up in this server. A few days ago, two large bots were de-verified; we restored their status immediately after we were informed. Understandably, this prompted questions around why it happened.

Sharing how we make decisions and changes is an important part of being transparent with you all. We’re all invested in making the Discord bot ecosystem great, and we don’t want anyone to be anxious or fearful for their own projects.

Why was their verification status changed? Our review team looks holistically at your bot when applying for verification and intents. In this case, misinterpretation of privacy policies led to the belief that bots may be breaking TOS, and their verification status was removed.

What is Discord doing to prevent this from happening again? In conducting our postmortem, we identified several action items to better proactively and reactively deal with this situation, including:

updates to internal review processes, including escalation
better visibility of important bot attributes in our review tooling
improved alerting for verification state changes
audits of external and internal written policies to ensure they’re up to date and nonconflicting
planned auditing additions to internal tooling

Again, this is an extremely rare scenario - but we’re sharing this because we don’t want any developer to feel nervous about losing their verification status without warning. We want our review process to be efficient and fast, so that we can support more of you and keep wait times down, and that also means as we grow, we learn from situations like this and can add extra checks.

Hi everyone - We can't wait to show you what we've been working on, and next up is the ability for you to preview what your app product page will look like in the App Directory. This will be available this week!

For those who have opted in to discovery on the Developer Portal (clicking 'opt-in' button on the Discovery Status tab - read more about that here: https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/4574148899863-App-Directory-Bot-profile-pages) you will be able to see how the information you've added to your page will look - things like images and videos, your app description, external links, and so on. We'll post again here when this new tab is released in the App Directory section of the developer portal later this week.

We also know you're eager to hear more about the upcoming AutoMod feature - we have someone from the team preparing a demo for you, but we are going to need to shift this presentation out a little bit. This means temporarily we're going to un-schedule the event we currently have in the events tab. We apologize if you are disappointed, but we promise it will be back soon! wumphug

If you have burning questions about our API you were going to submit to our Q&A, you can do so here https://survey.alchemer.com/s3/6877851/May-Q-A. We'll keep this open until the end of the week, and then post written responses to as many as we can next week.

I wanted to post a quick reminder that there's a server event tomorrow, <t:1656097200>. We're excited to try out a new style of event where we'll hold a conversation with 4 panelists from the developer community to talk about their experiences adopting and implementing commands. We'll also have some time at the beginning of the event where we'll talk about the usual API and app updates.
